In designing mine workings and adequate roof supports, it is indispensable to determine properties of the strata surrounding the workings. The proper selection of roof supports is based, before everything else, on a thorough knowledge of the roof rock strength, especially tensile strength. This parameter is a vital factor in the delamination of roof rocks and eventual cave-in. It is also important to know the properties of the floor on which the roof supports are set. While driving galleries, it is essential to know beforehand the strength of rocks that will be encountered in the near future during the work. The devices described will help to obtain this information.

Flotation of coal after multistage addition of frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA). A correlation between low ash content, low specific gravity, and high reactivity of coal was observed. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, removal of mineral matter enhances reactivity through the physical changes brought about by ash removal. A detailed analysis of pre-ignition kinetics indicated the possible effect of bulk density of coal in terms of resistance to volatile release and effective (available) surface area of coal. In the char combustion stage, mineral matter seems to influence reactivity through catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/non- combustible material, internal pore structure, and surface roughness.

The Reverse Curve Tunnel Project was located in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado approximately twelve (12) miles east of Glenwood Springs. The Project was one of many being constructed over a period of time by the State of Colorado, Department of Highways to improve Interstate 70 to four lanes as it travels thru the environmentally sensitive Glenwood Canyon. The Project consisted of excavating and concreting a tunnel approximately five hundred fifty (550) feet long, forty two (42) feet wide, and thirty two (32) feet high. The designer was Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas, with geotechnical consultation provided by Woodward Clyde. CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES There were several significant construction challenges presented primarily by the physical location of the Project. In this study each problem will be discussed, as well as how it was overcome by construction methods and/or design requirements. Portal Excavation - One of the most difficult areas of work on the Project consisted of excavation and stabilizing the East and West Portal rock prior to tunnel excavation. The Reverse Curve Tunnel passes through a sheer walled cliff face which is approximately two hundred fifty (250) feet high. Geologically the cliff consists of primarily sedimentary deposits with open, weathered joints and vertical faulting. It is well known that weak floor conditions in central Illinois affect pillar and mine opening stability. The floor interaction with coal pillars and immediate mine roof are being studied using two dimensional (plane-strain) elastic-plastic finite element models. The effects of varying soft floor thickness, coal seam- thickness, width of mine openings and strength parameters of coal and mine floor are being evaluated. The finite element models developed by Agbabian Associates and Dahl were utilized in this study.

An innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a high-capacity roof-truss system to replace conventional wooden cribs. The first field test was conducted at the Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests were installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data demonstrated that the dynamic roof-truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining. Thus, a stable tailgate entry is maintained

Because of their great diversity, minerals and their derived products are necessary for almost every aspect of life. The European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR) unites hundreds stakeholders from industry, the re-search community, public authorities, the financial community, regulators, consumers and civil society around the major technological challenges to the sector, in order to jointly act towards a common vision. The Platform will contribute to strengthening one of the fundamental pillars of the European economy and society. The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of the ETP SMR is designed to act as a realistic and inspirational guide to defining a comprehensive research programme that will mobilise stake-holders and ensure that European competences are at the forefront of science & technology worldwide. It will help to stimulate investment in research and provide guidance for policy options. The SRA shows the way the mineral industry has to proceed in forthcoming decades if it is to serve European society in the way necessary. Without a strong European minerals industry, the future development of the EU economy risks to be curbed significantly.

For the past five years, Small Mine Development has been involved in the development of small grade underground projects. These projects have been in tough environments where solutions have been found by placing emphasis on creative collaborations by small work forces and selected specialists. This has created an environment where constant innovation and change have become standard operating practice. The cornerstones of these efficient operations have been formed using pneumatic backfill, creative shotcreting, specialized equipment, and highly motivated people. The results realized have served to turn interesting properties into productive operations.

INTRODUCTION It is a generally recognized obligation of owners and operators of underground mines in the United States to protect the health of miners against the potential carcinogenic effect of airborne alphaemitting radionuclides, in particular the shortlived radioactive daughter-products of 222Rn. In meeting this obligation, a number of strategies are available, and it is largely up to the operator to decide what combination of methods he will use. Because the officially accepted theory of the mechanism by which radon and its short-lived progeny cause cancer of the respiratory system, the objective in controlling this health hazard is to limit as far as possible the inhalation of the three daughter products, 218Po, 214Pb, and 214Bi. (214Po, the fourth nuclide in the chain, is so short-lived that its alpha-decay occurs almost instantaneously after the beta-decay of its parent, 214Bi.) The reasoning in this theory leads to the conclusion that the alphadecay of radon itself causes essentially negligible physiological damage, and that the amount of daughter product activity attributable to decay of radon within the respiratory system is also very small. As every ventilation engineer in this business knows, however, focusing remedial actions exclusively on the daughter products themselves is choosing the hard way, and will probably never lead to effective control of this health hazard in underground mining activities. The reason for this troublesome fact can be seen in Figure 1. Let us say that we have air containing 222Rn and its short-lived daughters in near-equilibrium, a not-uncommon condition in the air of a poorly ventilated underground mine, and that we wish to purify it by removing only the toxic daughter products. If we have been very thorough in our purification efforts, we might expect to achieve a 99% reduction of the Working Level (WL) measurement. Figure 2 allows us to examine closely the early regrowth of WL's in this freshly cleaned air. Within the first five minutes, for instance, the WL's are back to 10% of their full equilibrium value, and ten minutes later the level has more than doubled and is on its way to an almost complete defeat of the clean-up effort by the end of the next hour. It is quite clear from this simple illustration that no matter how effective an air-cleaning system may be if it is directed only at the selective removal of the toxic trio, 218Po, 214Pb and 214Bi, its beneficial effect will be quite temporary. A truly effective attack on the problem must always include methods aimed at the control of the unruly parent, radon. Then, even if its progeny have an inalienable "right to life", their brief lives will not be spent in the miners' lungs. Introduction Raise boring is the most accepted form of mechanized hard rock boring in the mining industry. It appeared logical to take this mechanization one step further by introducing computers. Atlas Copco Jarva has produced a series of raise boring models that use an integrated computer. The company decided to use electronics and computerization, not for marketing purposes, but to make its equipment more cost-effective. Basis of Cost-Effective Design From the manufacturer's standpoint, it is possible for the equipment owner to reduce the cost of putting in raises by: • Replacing existing components with less expensive components that produce the same results; • Replacing existing components with more expensive components that make the equipment more productive; • Mechanizing equipment to reduce associated labor costs; and • Combining the above. Analysis of a standard raise boring machine (RBM) system showed that little could be done with less expensive components. It appeared, however, that the RBM could be more productive by transmitting more horsepower through the expensive drill string, while being precisely controlled by computers. An RBM system includes a basic machine, drill pipe, accessories, reamer, and cutters. The approximate percentage cost of various components on a standard system capable of boring 300 m (985 ft) long and 3-m-diam (10-ft-diam) aises in medium to hard rock is shown in Table 1. Also shown is the increased cost above standard of the Jarva computerized machine, and the productivity of both. Increased Productivity Penetration is important during the reaming cycle for more productive raise boring. This is possible by increasing the cutter load with constant rpm or increasing the rpm with constant cutter load. To increase thrust and maintain rpm requires increased capacity in the cylinders, drive train, main thrust bearings, drill string, electrical motors, and power units. To increase rpm and maintain cutter load requires only increased capacity in the electrical motors and power units. This is possible because the torque requirement remains constant for a constant thrust load. Only the horsepower increases, proportional to rpm. Since cutter costs are a big factor in raise boring, changes in machine performance must be analyzed to assess the effect on cutter performance. With a standard or typical carbide cutter, as used on raise boring machines, the effects of increased thrust or rpm are shown in Table 2. The assumption is made that the base data is the current rpm and thrust range where the cutters are now operated. It is also assumed one variable is held constant while the other increases. The result of this comparison, approximately, is that a 50% penetration increase can be achieved with little or no increase in cutter cost if rpm is increased 50% and cutter load is maintained constant. A similar 50% penetration increase can be achieved with a 45% increase in cutter cost, if the cutter load is increased by 20% and maintained constant. Computer systems, installed in mineral processing, are designed to accumulate massive amounts of real-time data. Frequently these data are only partially processed because of the lack of adequate methods and the limited accuracy of mineral processing sensors. Methods are proposed to estimate missing data and reconciliate sensor data on a real-time basis. They are based on dynamic extension of steady-state techniques such as the node imbalance minimization or the least-squares mass balance adjustment techniques. The methods are illustrated for simulated and actual flotation data. Their data upgrading ability could be used to improve process monitoring, control and optimization.

Recent advances in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) have provided a new approach to the estimation of related quality characteristics, such as heating value, ash content and moisture of coals used for power generation. The basic strategy for developing ANN and ANFIS models for the prediction of missing quality values, is to train the models using an existing quality data set and an appropriate learning method. Statistical analysis results of the estimated values, showed that ANN and ANFIS are not only more accurate than the widely used regression models, but also tends to reproduce the variability of the initial data, while regression models generate a smooth representation of reality.

The ultrafast load cell (UFLC) has proved to be an exceptionally good device for the study of the fundamental processes associated with the impact fracture of particulate material. A new high- sensitivity UFLC has been commissioned at the Utah Comminution Center for the study of low-impact energy single-particle fracture. The force-time histories of individual fracture events have been measured. The force and energy absorbed at crack initiation have been measured at several particle sizes. The mass specific energy for fracture and the associated breakage function have been determined. The distributions of particle breakage energy and particle strength have been measured as a function of particle size.

Magnetic separation using rare earth rolls (RER) and rare earth drums (RED) have seem tremendous development and use in recent years. While the process of magnetic separation is understood, the principles affecting the separation, the specific application and the optimization of RERs and REDs are less well known. This paper offers practical insight into the basic operation, selection and optimization of RERs and REDs. It is a guide for the engineer who must design a test series and select the proper equipment for that application. It provides the engineers and line operators who control the daily operation of the equipment a basic understanding of the dynamics of operation and the principles that govern the optimization of RERs and REDs.

In mining industry, one of the simplest methods to smooth the standard deviation of a given ore controlled property is to build longitudinal blending piles. The effect of homogeneization is obtained due to the fact that an entire cross-section of the pile is reclaimed at each time. The variance of the pile output is the sum of the internal cross-section slice variance plus the reclaimed slice variance. While the first term is a tipical short-term parameter and is absorbed by the process, the second one may be or may not be absorbed. The goal of designing blending piles is to minimize the reclaimed slice variance. Conditional Simulation as described in this paper, is an alternative method to do it. It is devised to design longitudinal blending piles, taking into consideration economical, geometrical and statistical parameters of the ore to be blended, in order to estimate the resulting effect. It presents advantages in relation to other methods for its adaptability and flexibility in simulating pile performances.

In the high Andes of Peru, two tunnels are being constructed totaling nine kilometers in length at an elevation of over 4,500 meters. The tunnels convey freezing and crystal-clear waters from rainfalls, streams, and lakes for the consumption of Lima. The drill and blast 3-meter wide by 4-meter high tunnels are being driven from both ends through folded and sheared volcanic tuff, andesite, agglomerate,and limestone, where groundwater inflow is high. This paper describes the design geological and groundwater inflow investigations and construction.

An ongoing research program at the Colorado School of Mines is investigating the application of low to moderate pressure water jets to assist the cutting performance of drag type cutter bits commonly used on coal mine cutting machinery. The results to date indicate that a water jet directed to impinge the rock in the immediate vicinity of cutter tip can provide significant benefits in terms of reduced cutting forces, prolonged bit life and less airborne dust, as well as reduced tendency of sparking during cutting. This paper describes the findings of this research effort designed to fully evaluate and optimize the parameters affecting the performance of a combined water jet assisted drag bit cutting system for coal mine applications.

Acid mine drainage is a major environmental problem worldwide. A key to remediating this problem is understanding the rate and mechanisms of the complex, multistep pyrite oxidation reaction under geologically relevant conditions. Because many waste piles are not submerged, a large amount of pyrite oxidation actually occurs in air. We have designed a Barcroft-manometer reactor to measure the rate of pyrite oxidation in air as a function of relative humidity and oxygen partial pressure. The reactor consists of two chambers joined by a manometer. Each experiment occurs at constant temperature, initial oxygen partial pressure, and relative humidity, although these variable can be changed between runs. Oxygen consumption was measured and pyrite oxidation rates were calculated from those data. Initial data indicate that rate of pyrite oxidation by oxygen in humid air is much faster than the rate of oxidation by oxygen in solution. The rates determined by this study can be used to develop better remediation techniques for acidic mine waters.
