Laboratory testing programs were conducted to investigate the performance under compression loading of several types of geomembranes and geotextiles proposed for use in heap and dump leach projects. Synthetic liners of several thicknesses were sandwiched between representative subgrade soils and cover materials, thus modeling in the laboratory the actual installation conditions expected. Performance was evaluated by visual inspection and vacuum testing. Several testing procedures and equipment were used to investigate the effect of these testing parameters on the predicted performance.

Pit and underground mine operators typically use a lot of big equipment tires. Just as typically, they spend a lot of money they shouldn't on these tires. That's because tire use and maintenance are not given enough attention. That often occurs because mine management and personnel do not know the basic facts of tire use and care. If a piece of large equipment is damaged or ruined, a good explanation better he forthcoming. A ruined tire is often just a shoulder shrug. But that sort of fatalistic acceptance can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year extra for big equipment tires. That does not have to be. There are some basic tire considerations that, if followed, will extend tire life and lower tire costs. Most companies have the inevitable conflict between the production department, which resists any restrictions that may reduce productivity, and the maintenance department. Production success is based on meeting a schedule of yards moved, while maintenance success is based on availability and equipment cost. When production falls behind schedule and equipment speeds are increased, maintenance may soon find its tire costs rapidly increasing, unless everyone understands the tires' vulnerability to damage. Unless the production department understands the problem, or restraint is applied by top management, costs may become exorbitant. At one job site, tire costs alone exceeded $250,000, to move 55 dam3 (72 000 yd3) of dirt on an 11-km cycle. The operation temporarily caught up with its schedule, but tire costs and attendant downtime soon made this a not-for-profit exercise. Because an operator must always attempt to move payload at the lowest cost, there are cases when higher than normal tire costs must be accepted. For example, in pioneering work with tandem engine scrapers, steep grades shorten tire life to less than normal. But the steep grades make shorter haul cycles possible, yielding more trips per hour than alternative earth-moving methods.

The regulation of exposure of underground personnel to radon and its daughter products has significantly changed since the 1950's. The U.S. Bureau of Mines - Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) - Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) sequence of standards and regulations have lowered the maximum allowable occupational exposure and now the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, effective in 1990, have further regulated uranium mine emissions. Under the authority of Section 112 of the Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. 7401), the EPA has set regulations for the control of radon (Rn-222) emissions from underground uranium mines as well as other sources. Since the venting of radon from the mine atmosphere to the outside air is a major component of the miner's protection, and since this is the first quantitative effort to limit gaseous mine emissions to the environment, it was felt that it would be useful to examine the implementation of the EPA regulation at working mines. The concern was not only for determining compliance with the regulation but also for observing what effect the rule might have on mine air quality and thus on worker exposure. The regulation is stated in terms of the maximum permitted radiation dose to the closest potentially exposed individual, which is calculated from a computer program supplied by EPA and radon emission rates measured by the mine operator. Relative proximity to nearby populations determines the allowable magnitude of mine exhaust ventilation emissions. For some mines this is a serious operational constraint.

The American Borate Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Owens Corning Fiberglas Company under a management contract to the Hanna Mining Company, owns and operates an underground borate mine in Death Valley, California. The mine, named the Billie Mine, is located 24 km (15 miles) southeast of Furnace Creek along Highway 190. The ore body is under Death Valley National Monument with the major portion of the surface facilities located just outside the monument boundary. (See Figure 1.) The Billie Mine produces approximately 227 000 metric tons of crude ore per year. About 65% of finished product is supplied to Owens-Corning, the remainder is sold to other fiberglass producers. Geology The borate minerals in the Billie ore body were deposited in the lower main member of the Furnace Creek Formation, which is Pliocene in age. The ore body is thought to have formed from volcanic springs in or near a small lake basin. The deposit is essentially a limestone breccia that is permeated with borate minerals and surrounded with limey lake bed mudstones and shales. The ore body is mineralized with two main borate ores, colemanite and probertite. A third borate ore, ulexite, mainly occurs in the upper part of the ore body. The original mineral of deposition is thought to have been ulexite. Ulexite is a sodium-calcium borate hydrated with eight molecular waters. Due to heat and pressure from burial by later sediments, the ulexite had water forced out of its structure and recrystallized as probertite. The pneumatic jackleg drill remains a widely used tool in development and production drilling in many small-scale and narrow-vein underground mining operations in North America. Several drawbacks of this technology (unsatisfactory drilling rate, noise, vibration, presence of oil mist, etc.) and the successful introduction of water-powered jackleg drills in South Africa have stimulated the interest of many mine operators. The performance of both drill types have been tested in a mine site in Northwestern Quebec, Canada. Results of the testing of penetration and advance rates as well as environmental aspects are presented. They show a superiority of water-powered drills, even though the difference in performance is less significant than that reported from South Africa. Further research avenues are proposed to better evaluate the potential of water drilling technology in North American metal mines.

Three studies conducted at the University of Utah relating to the effect of scrubbers on face airflow patterns, the resulting dust exposure of operators and the development of a throat scrubber for continuous miners are summarized in this paper. The first study involved full-scale laboratory tests to determine the potential dispersion patterns and transport of dust at a continuous miner face, using different ventilation configurations and a scrubber. Concentration maps were developed and potential exposures at operator positions were examined. The second study involved the development of a 3-D numerical model to predict airflow patterns generated by a scrubber at a continuous miner face. The model was designed to evaluate the role of various face parameters on airflow patterns at a miner face and to complement the full-scale testing. The third study involved the design and fabrication of a low profile hydraulically powered continuous miner throat scrubber. The scrubber uses three hydraulic motors and small diameter fans to draw about 3000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air and uses a flooded bed scrubber to filter dust particles.

This paper addresses jet fans used as booster fans within mine ventilation networks. The static pressure developed by the jet fan was determined using the momentum theory. The influence of various parameters on this pressure was analyzed. A method was proposed for determination of the jet fan characteristic curve . The distance between the jet fan and a point where the fully developed static pressure can be measured was determined. It was shown that a reduction cone can significantly improve the jet fan performance. Verification experiments conducted in the Waldo mine are described.

Polymer and surfactant dispersant are widely used to disperse filler particles within a medium. Sur- faces active dispersants form self-assemble structures at the solid-liquid interface. The mechanical properties of the surfactant structures have been determined to strongly influence the dispersion behavior. In this study the atomic force microscope (AFM) is used to determine the elastic modulus and yield strength of a steric dispersant layer adsorbed to a rigid non-deformable surface. To interpret these values a model for elastic body contact based on a modified Hertz theory is applied. The results from this method may aid in the design of application-based dispersant systems.

This paper studied the flotation separation of feldspar, zircon and kyanite from quartz with a mixture of cationic and anionic collectors. Tests show that collector mixture has specially good effect, using it, the separation of these three silicate minerals from quartz can be successfully achieved at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid, fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The properties and characteristics of collector mixture were analysed. By means of IR-spectra, ESCA and AES, the action mechanism between collector mixture and minerals was throughoutly studied.

Bentonites and bentonite containing sealing materials are used since many years for sealing purposes in foundation, dike construction, hydraulic engineering and landfill construction, especially for encapsulation of old waste deposits In the near future compacted bentonites will be important components of multi-barrier systems for dry charge of old mines, for underground disposal of hazardous or radioactive wastes. Because of their exceptional physical, structural and chemical properties, bentonites are offering manifold possibilities to protect the environment against the negative effects of dumping grounds. Often the compliance with legal regulations for waste dumping or the isolation of contaminated areas is possible only by using bentonite containing sealing systems. The essential properties of bentonite, bentonite containing building materials and the different techniques of making horizontal technical base liners and vertical cut-off walls are explained. For horizontal technical base liners the adsorption ability, the ion exchange capacity and the swelling behavior of bentonites are important. For cut-off walls bentonite controls the rheological behavior of the slurry and is responsible for the low permeability of the hardened bentonite-cement-wall. In the multi-barrier systems of repositories for chemical or radioactive wastes compacted bentonites are considered to be favourable sealing and backfilling materials because of their high swelling capacity, their adsorption and ion-exchange ability and their plasticity in water saturated state.

The past decade has witnessed an unprecendented proliferation of groundwater computer models. Some of these numerical models were developed for the purpose of simulating groundwater movement in mining environments and predicting inflow rates into active mines. However, a general acceptance of these models as routine planning tools by the mining industry has been slow. Until recently, the major use of these models in the industry is by consultants. There are several reasons that have contributed to this situation. Some of these factors - include scarcity or non-existence of an appropriate data base information required for executing these models, the difficulty and costs involved in acquiring data, and the fact that the instructions for using these models are often too involved and time consuming. Today, however, the state-of-the-art technology has been advanced to a level where numerical models can be routinely used to simulate and predict inflow rates into active mining environments. Such environments include highly fractured (longwall) and deforming flow media. Features integrated into these comprehensive and yet easy to use models are double-porosity-pressure, multiphase, and non-darcian flow conditions. This paper reviews the role that computer modeling has played in mining-related operations by presenting several case studies and the state-of-the-art tools currently in use. Included will be some of the practical field applications that have been compiled during the past decade.

Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). INTRODUCTION We will discuss here only the subway construction phase; that is, two to five years at a given location--not the long-term analysis. We also will compare some tunnel construction methods used for BART and in Los Angeles. Typically, urban planners and engineers try to balance a new mass transit system to include tunneled subways, cut-and-cover construction in city streets, and elevated guideways. Their decisions are based on many factors, most of which can be quantified. But there are some socio-economic-environmental factors which are almost intangible, or nonquantifiable, and these are rarely included in the final report for a rapid transit system. There are two reasons for this: First, it is difficult to evaluate disruptions and psychological inconveniences to individuals and to the community during the construction period, and even more difficult to assign costs because the valuations are always subjective. Second, the rapid transit project capital costs are given in the final report and the public knows them; but the intangible social costs are borne by the affected neighborhood community, not the entire city, and as such they are "hidden costs," which in fact may add as much as 25 percent to the total system cost.

The computer program SYGRISIS estimates number of units of equipment and operating costs on the basis of yearly production for different loading (wheel loader, LHD, digging arm loader) and transport (truck, train, conveyor belt, hoist, pump) equipment either individually or in any specified combination. Input data are yearly capacity, working time and technical data for the equipment. For the cost analysis input data are technical quantities and unit costs. SYGRISIS is written in TURBO Pascal and can be used on IBM compatible PCs with MS-DOS operating system.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) within the mining industry are becoming frequent events. Large companies and small companies alike are jumping on the bandwagon of merger mania. The results of these mergers have significant impacts on the employees of the involved companies. Comments, observations, and specific examples of the 'peop1e"aspect of mergers are presented in an attempt to answer the question "will it be business as usual?" My answer is a simple NO. This paper attempts to provide support for my conclusion. The reader should recognize that the comments, observations, and specific examples mentioned in this paper are subjective and reflect the experience and prejudice of the author.

An understanding of forces responsible for the stability of dispersions of colloidal particles when interacting with each other in aqueous solutions is of great interest academically and industrially. When water-soluble polymers are adsorbed onto colloidal particles, various effects on the stability of their suspensions can be expected ranging from steric stabilization to bridging flocculation. The possibility of detailed characterization of such systems using direct measurements of interaction forces between particles can help in further improvement of existing technologies of solid-liquid separation. An atomic force microscope (AFM) colloidal probe was used to measure the interaction forces between a silica sphere and a silica substrate in the presence of water-soluble polymers. Poly(ethlene oxide) (PEO) with three different molecular weights (7,000, 43,000, and 63,000), each with a very narrow molecular weight distribution, were used in this study. The interaction forces measured with the AFM over an extended time scale are discussed in terms of the adsorption kinetics measured through in-situ FTIR/IRS measurements.

An innovative biological process is described for the treatment of cyanide-, metals- and nitrate-contaminated mine process water. The technology was tested for its ability to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and to immobilize metals in wastewater from agitation cyanide leaching. A pilot-scale demonstration is described in which a pilot plant was constructed to demonstrate the technology on a mine process-waste stream at a mine in Nevada. The demonstration was performed jointly under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the US De¬partment of Energy's (DOE) Western Environmental Technology Office (WETO) under Interagency Agree¬ment Number DW89938513-01-0. The Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration program was also involved in the project. MSE Technology Applications Inc. (MSE), Butte, MT, was the contractor responsible for conducting the project, and Pintail Systems Inc., Aurora, CO, was the technology provider. The pilot-scale unit was field-tested at Echo Bay's McCoy/Cove Mine southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. The biotreatment process was considered successful in destroying cyanide in the mine process water. The process was also determined to be effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed from the mine process water. From the results of these pilot-scale tests, it was concluded that the biotreatment process potentially of¬fers an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." This paper examines methods for limiting occupational silica exposures for roof-bolting personnel in underground coal mining. A canopy air curtain and an air tube were evaluated as means to provide filtered air over the breathing zone of these personnel. Laboratory testing showed that dust reductions beneath the air curtain and air tube approached 60% and 40%, respectively, with low interference air velocities. The data also showed that dust reductions were highest for positions closest to the device and that these levels decreased with distance. This paper also evaluates a metal rake, a flexible insert and a rigid insert for cleaning the roof-bolter dust collector box. Less dust was produced when using the rigid insert. Surprisingly, the flexible insert was sometimes no better than scraping or raking the dust onto the mine floor. However, little dust got on the workers coveralls when using either of the inserts.

Flotation of dolomite from apatite was investigated, using dodecylamine hydrochloride or sodium oleate as the collector, with and without inorganic modifiers such as sodium chloride. Separation of dolomite from apatite was anticipated from the single mineral experiments under various pH and collector concentration conditions. Flotation selectivity in the mixtures, however, was found to be limited. Attempts to control the flotation response of these minerals by addition of salts such as NaCl and KCI indicated that selectivity is possible. The presence of sodium chloride was determined to depress apatite flotation using sodium oleate, leaving dolomite flotation unaffected (Moudgil and Ince, 1989). In this paper, conditions for optimum separation and the effect of major parameters on the desired selectivity are discussed.
