Hecla Mining Company and Master Builders Inc. conducted a study to evaluate the use of admixtures in reducing backfill binder concentrations. Additionally, admixtures were evaluated to help mitigate the occurrence of cold joints in the fill. Initial results demonstrated a 20% reduction of cement was possible while maintaining critical strength and flowability criteria. Admixtures also helped to control the formation of cold joints in backfilled areas.

Literally thousands of new flotation agents, both collectors and modifiers, have been proposed for sulfide and non-sulfide flotation over the past six decades since the beginning of the use of soluble surfactants in flotation. In stark contrast, the number of flotation agents used in practice is small. Xanthates and fatly acids, along with a few well-recognized modifiers, dominate the industry. Three major questions will then arise: a) are there truly specific needs in the industry that call for chemistries that are different from those used currently ? b) if yes, given the track record in the industry, what is the likelihood that such different chemistries will ever be used and to what extent ? and c) is more research into developing new chemistries necessary ? A critical assessment of flotation agents in general is made in this paper to provide answers to these questions and to identify the major factors that are responsible for the large disparity that exists between flotation reagent research and commercial usage.

The industrial Source Complex (ISC3) model is the accepted standard used to predict emissions of particulate matter less tan 10µm in diameter (PM10) from industrial operations. This model, however, over-predicts PM10 emissions from surface mining operations, making permits harder to obtain. The over-prediction is likely due to the fact that the model applies emissions from mobile (dynamic) sources to stationary (static) areas. Utilizing a Gaussian dispersion equation, a Dynamic Component Program was created to correct the over-prediction of the model and results in a much more realistic modeling of actual conditions from mobile sources.

Diesel powered vehicles have made underground mines more efficient, but with the advent of DPM regulations, in most cases, extra ventilation and/or engine emissions control technology will be required. Using fuel cell powered vehicles will not need these measures to be taken. Nine US underground mines of varying production rates and mining methods were studied to determine possible ventilation reductions if their diesel fleets were replaced with identical fuel cell powered vehicles. Factors that might limit ventilation reductions, such as heat and the effects on other pollutants were determined for each mine. The ventilation cost savings and other benefits of fuel cell vehicles show that when they become commercially available they have the potential of being viable alternatives to diesel vehicles.

This paper discusses the effects of seam inclination and lateral stresses on the stress distribution in pillars in inclined coal seams. The average pillar stress is a function of the overburden weight, the mine depth, the effective extraction ratio and the angle of seam inclination. Normal and shear stresses in the pillar are computed by numerical modeling. In medium dipping seams, leaving a pillar with its axis normal to the stratification causes a shearing stress concentration in the top and bottom corners of the pillar. This results in the pillar possibly becoming less stable in comparison to pillars in horizontal coal seams. Therefore, to reduce the stresses, it may be necessary to leave the pillar at an angle of b deviated from the normal axis to stratification. A mathematically approximate formula for determining b is proposed, and the results are confirmed by numerical modeling.

Silica sand is one of the world's most plentiful resources and is a basic necessity in our way of life. The end uses of silica sand are an integral part of our homes, transportation, and places of work. The environmental legislation enacted in the early 1970's, coupled with the oil embargo and higher than normal inflation, have had a very real impact on the industry and its primary consumers, the foundries and glass producers. The present environmental laws directed at air and water pollution and the working environment can, in most cases, be met, but not without large capital expenditures for equipment. These expenditures must reduce the funds available for expansion and modernization of existing processes which are necessary if the costs to produce industrial sand are to remain at acceptable levels. The concern for the future is the enactment of more stringent laws, and the available technology and equipment to economically comply with them.

Engineers in the field of coal preparation are continually striving to increase the efficiency of various circuits used in preparation plants. Undoubtedly, one of the important factors concerning the processing efficiency of a coal preparation plant is improved analyses and control of the processing equipment. The necessary link between the performance criteria of a circuit may be provided through on-line determination of various parameters. Currently, there are a certain number of on-line instruments developed for measurement of ash content of coal (Watt and Sowerby, 1983; Kawatra, 1976; Fauth et al., 1984; Lyman and Chester, 1980), moisture content (Hall et al., 1969), and sulfur content (Stewart et al., 1974). In the case of coal separatory units, these parameters are often directly related to the quality of the product. In other words, the extent of misplacement of refuse in the product, or vice versa, would indicate the performance characteristics of any particular coal washing equipment. Partition curves are therefore established to predict the performance of coal cleaning operations. Conventional sampling and testing is currently the major tool with which partition curves are produced and the performance efficiency of the operation is assessed. While conventional analysis techniques are accurate, they are slow and time-consuming.

The southern Florida phosphate deposits that will be mined in the future contain significant amounts of dolomite. Because high MgO levels are undesirable in phosphoric acid production, several flotation schemes for the removal of the dolomite have been attempted. Alternatively, selective flocculation has been suggested as a potential process. A high MgO rock was simulated with a 30:10:60 mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica, respectively. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-silica and dolomite- silica systems using Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants, respectively. However, no single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-dolomite system using PEO. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for the loss of selectivity, was minimized by the addition of a site blocking agent (SBA), consisting of a lower- molecular-weight fraction of PEO. Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed-mineral tests was also achieved in the ternary mixed-mineral system, namely, the apatite-dolomite-silica system. In this report, surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior are discussed.

The dissolution behavior of metals from Au/Ag/Cu-alloys has been studied using rotating disc electrodes in solutions containing acids, cyanide, and ammonia. Electrochemical methods as well as leaching tests were adopted in this study. The results showed that there was no galvanic effect on the dissolution of metals from homogeneous alloys. In aerated cyanide solutions, the dissolution of gold, silver, and copper from their alloys was partly controlled by surface chemical reaction, but largely by mass transfer. On the other hand, the galvanic coupling effect played a very important role in heterogeneous alloy systems.

Maintenance of equipment in Longwall faces plays a vital role in face performance. This is more prominent when shortage of spare parts and trained personnel occurs. A study was made in an operating Indian Longwall face for identifying the types and meantime between failures. Though the duration was not enough and study was not very elaborate, it revealed certain interesting facts. The machine availability was found to be poor, though a maintenance schedule was followed. Failure of simple parts like AFC chain connectors even resulted in loss of production of 10 times the complete chain cost. This pinpoints that a proper maintenance schedule is to be developed considering the human factors and local conditions existing in the particular country. Operations research techniques could be used in the process.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

The price of copper has gone into the tank. So has gold. Environmental regulations are more restrictive. Global warming has world leaders and environmental groups seeking international regulations to keep the planet from heating up - mostly by restricting the use of fossil fuels. And the US Secretary of the Interior wants to make it more costly -prohibitively so for smaller companies - to mine hard rock metals in the United States. By rights, miners should be carrying around a pessimistic attitude about their industry. But miners are an optimistic lot, always believing that things will improve. That optimism was in evidence in Tucson, AZ in early December, when about 620 miners met at the Double- tree Hotel for the Annual Meeting of the Arizona Conference, put on by SME. Attendees listened as a United States congressman commented on the recent tax cut bill, mining regulations and the continuing need for the mining industry to improve its image in the eyes of the general public. Session speakers discussed how improved technology has made their processing operations at Sierrita and Morenci more efficient and cost-effective.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. Understanding aquifer properties in surface mine backfill is essential for managing the groundwater flow system as well as controlling the formation and discharge of acid urine drainage. Slug tests (injection and withdrawal) performed on wells in mine spoil may yield two distinctly different response characteristics. One type of response is indicative of a porous media system. The second type of response indicates the presence of a pseudokarst system. The presence of voids or conduits in the backfill is indicated by an almost instantaneous partial recovery of the water level displacement. This rapid recovery is turbulent flow and cannot be analyzed by conventional (Darcian) methods. The turbulent flow may cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be less than the actual values. The slug dissipation surface area created by the voids contiguous to the test well add to the known dissipation surface area of the screened interval. This can cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be greater than the actual hydraulic conductivity or the aquifer to appear more permeable. Whenever analyzing data from aquifer tests in mine spoil, these potential problems must be kept in mind. In spite of the problems encountered during slug testing of spoil, the aquifer hydraulic parameters derived and the slug responses observed remain useful in the hydrologic characterization of a mine site.

INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. The experimental system for mine venti1ation control in Staszic colliery has two - level structure. In the lower - measuring 1evel the existing computer - based early fire detection system has been used completed with a number of additional sensors needed for ventilation parameters monitoring. The higher 1evel is a secondary computer equipped with a suitab1e dedicated software performing data processing according to the control a1gorithm. Direct control of air flow in a selected mine district is performed by means of a remotely controlled automatic regulator. Apart from functional tests of the system and its elements some research work has been carrying out in the colliery based on observations of transient effects caused by changes in air flow distribution.

Frasch sulfur production/pricing decisions are based on market demand, less nondiscretionary sulfur supply. Price covers the cost of Frasch production and byproduct sellers accept the Frasch price structure. Large stocks have led Canadian byproduct producers to price aggressively at times, but their near-term drawdown suggests more passive price policies in the 1990s. Expanding continental nondiscretionary supply is combining with sizable Frasch supply increments to weaken prices. Simulations using a market model embodying these structural characteristics indicate that expanding demand may not result in substantial recovery from 1992 price lows before 1996.

Problems with gravimetric sampling have led to the establishing of a computer linked tyndallometer dust measuring system. Preliminary tests conducted with the system indicate that the system can be used to do correlative exercises between mining activities and dust levels. The system also allows occurrence characteristics of dust levels to be determined. Use of this equipment will enable dust allaying methods to be tailored to the specific underground situation.
