The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. "This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative tunnelling method named the Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which is conducted by the Ring Pipe Jacking Machine (RPJM). The RPJM consists of a double ring shell which forms a ring section where small interlaced cutter heads or several micro tunnelling machines are assembled to cut soil. Similar to the conventional pipe jacking method, the RPJM also needs a thrust system, a slurry transport system, and a control system. To satisfy the need for large/super large or special section tunnels in future, the RPJM is designed to reduce sharply the excavation face to the annular section, thus enhancing the face stability. Part of the innovation is that the RPJM uses modular cutter heads or micro-TBMs which can be reused. The typical double shield shape can be easily changed by reinstalling the modular cutter heads. Modularity allows the tunnel to be cut in any cross-section shapes, ranging from a circular tunnel to a rectangular one. INTRODUCTION The demand and requirement to utilize urban underground space is rising with the rapid social development in recent years. It is necessary to reduce excavations of the urban ground surface to ensure smooth traffic in cities. Therefore the conventional open cut construction method for underground tunnels can no longer satisfy the need of practical engineering, and it is taken over by trenchless technologies .The Pipe jacking method is an important trenchless technology and is used more and more frequently to install underground pipelines, but the present pipe jacking method still has many problems. For example, it is not suitable for installing large-diameter tunnels and it also has difficulty in construction of short radius curved tunnels. This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative pipe jacking machine named the Ring Pipe Jacking machine (RPJM) and introduces the correspondent Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which can be applied to construct large-diameter tunnels. Furthermore, technical characteristics and superiority of the ring pipe jacking method are analyzed in this paper."

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Reasons for low recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope, and scanning Auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures that have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their application to the flotation recoveries of precious metals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

Ordinary kriiing (OK) is an interpolation algorithm mostly used in earth sciences applications where it provides satisfactory results. Robust kriging (RK) is an alternative algorithm which at- tempts to minimise the problems caused by the existence of outlier values within a given data set. Robust kriging essentially consists of an editing step prior to running the traditional OK method. This study compares the interpolation results obtained by OK and RK. Two data sets were used. The first data set consists of 140 samples mimicking a drilling survey named cluster.dat. An additional feature of this sample data is that its parent population, the reference data set, is available, thus permitting direct quantitative assessment of the effectiveness of a given estimation technique. The second data set consists of a grid sampled at 1x1 m. The estimates obtained by OK and RK using cluster.dat were compared to the reference data set. RK provided better results in terms of quality of the estimates than OK

The presence of methane gas in mines creates hazards of explosions, fire and suffocation. Under certain conditions the occurrence of methane also poses a danger of gas and coal outbursts. Consequently, prevention of gas and coal outbursts in coal mines requires a sound knowledge of methane gas occurrence in mine workings. However, the direct method of determining methane content of coals developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines is time and labor consuming for measurement, a new transportable methane tester was developed for Japanese coal mines. The instrument automatically measures emission gas from coal samples in the underground and also records and stores the data. Back on the surface, the tester can be connected via a RS 232 port to a PC computer for methane content estimation. Details of this technique are described here. Results on methane content determined in Japanese and U.S. western coal seams are discussed, as well.

The method of coal pillar design involves primarily two aspects: the geometry of the pillar and the strength of the coal. However, the strength of the coal has to be emphasized with respect to the entire pillar dimension rather than isolated strength values of coal samples taken and measured from different locations. As of now, the presently applied pillar design systems do not specify clearly what the coal sample strength really represents. The intention of this paper is to introduce the concept of seam strength as opposed to the current practice of using coal strength as a prime design criteria in the formulation of pillar calculations. Seams are most often composed of multiple layers of coal, partings, and bone in various configurations, changing within the vertical section of the seam even in relatively close locations. The difference in strength between the weakest and strongest component of the coal seam could be as much as five times or more. An experimental approach based on multiple uniaxial compressive strength tests performed on coal samples from the Coalburg and Warfield seams from eastern Kentucky was undertaken. Analysis of the results led to the conclusion that for pillar dimension calculations, both the weighted mean of the seam strength and the strength of the weakest stratum should be considered, rather than the relatively vague aspect of coal strength. The design of pillar dimensions based on the aforemen¬tioned criteria should assure a more realistic design performance.

Monitoring on Whites waste rock dump at Rum Jungle has provided a unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness of a cover in the medium term. Temperature and oxygen concentration profiles have been measured continuously, from some years before the cover was put in place in 1983 until the present. Lysimeters have been used to measure water infiltration rates. Heat and oxygen transport processes in the dump have been modelled and compared with field data, enabling oxidation rates to be quantified both before and after the cover was put in place. It has been found that the cover reduced the overall oxidation rate to between one third and one half of the uncovered rate. There is evidence that both the overall oxidation rate and water infiltration rate have increased in recent years.

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. A new pillar strength formula is presented. It incorporates a function [IF] of size and shape that takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive strength test results as function of [Y] reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

When solid pillar is not left to separate different mining levels in underground mine with high dip angle deposit, waste rock in the backfilled stope could be a safety hazard to future mining activities on levels above or below the backfill. Different backfill methods can be used to eliminate this hazard according to the deposit shape and mining method. Building concrete pillar in ore drift of each mining level is one of them. Concrete pillar had been constructed in underground mines based on operational experience. Little design literature and pillar performance data can be found. At Great Basin Gold Hollister Mine, over two thousand feet of concrete pillar had been constructed. The project started with engineering design which combined civil engineering concrete design and the specialties of underground construction. Time Domain Reflectometry technique was installed to monitor the pillar movement and concrete cylinder samples were collected and tested for quality control. Engineering design, underground construction, quality control and concrete pillar monitoring, as well as precious concrete mixing data from years of experience are fully covered in this paper to give a general frame of concrete pillar method.

Gold has always fascinated mankind. From Tutankhamen's mask to the huge nuggets that have been found in the Australian outback, gold has quickened the pulse and fevered the eye. But in recent years, governments around the western world have shown a singular lack of interest in research into gold processing, with many programs being cut. There are some notable exceptions, fortunately, and this paper summarizes a large research effort that is well supported by the Australian government and the Australian gold industry. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is an unincorporated joint venture between the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Murdoch University, Curtin University of Technology and the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy. The Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) is the Parker Centre's broker for generic R&D contracts with industry. Each of the partners makes available staff, students and equipment to further the work of the Parker Centre, and the Australian Government provides additional funding. The Parker Centre is nearly five years old and has grown spectacularly in that time. There are now about 30 full-time-equivalents of effort from 50 scientists and engineers, as well as about 40 postgraduate and honours students. The fundamentals of the key operations in hydrometallurgy are studied in three programs: leaching (which includes pretreatment by roasting etc), precipitation (or crystallisation), and surface processes (which includes solid/liquid separation, adsorption, solvent extraction, etc). A large part of the Parker Centre's R&D is directed towards gold processing technology. In Australia, a dramatic increase in gold production, from about 30 to nearly 300 tonnes per year (1977-1997), has been made possible largely as a result of a brilliant metallurgical innovation, the carbon-in-pulp process. However, falling head grades eg 2.56 to 1.84 g(Au)/t over the last 10 years, and environmental concerns, are squeezing profit margins. There is increasing pressure to reduce costs, and the Parker Centre program is focussed on providing the scientific understanding required to do this. A selection of research highlights will be given, to indicate the depth and breadth of the R&D at the Parker Centre.

First Majestic Silver Corp’s La Encantada Silver Mine is a producing mine with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day. The La Encantada team is currently constructing two small-scale caving mines, including the San Javier breccia caving mine. The new mine is constructed within a mineralized breccia body composed of clasts of varying sizes and with very poor rock quality. Due to this poor rock quality, primary and secondary supports are required to support both the development and production stages. Since the proximity of the new mining levels to existing old workings, correct selection of the support system and proper production controls, instrumentation, and monitoring are very critical to maintain the stability of the pillars and fortification elements. An increased ground deformation due to the load transfer during the production stage is expected. This report reviews the primary and secondary support elements used in the different stages of mining, the monitoring of ground deformation, and the steps taken to analyze and visualize the collected data in order to enable the geotechnical team to manage caving stress and maintain pillar stability. INTRODUCTION First Majestic Silver Corp. (“First Majestic”) is a Canadian mining company focused on silver production in Mexico that operates six producing silver mines, including La Encantada Silver Mine (“La Encantada”). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. La Encantada is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Coahuila, in northern Mexico, in the municipality of Villa de Ocampo. The mine lies in the northern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental physiographic province. The mine location is shown in Figure 1. La Encantada is a producing mine, with a mill processing capacity of 3,000 tpd, and a 4,000 tpd capacity cyanidation leaching circuit equipped to process fresh underground ore and old tailings amenable to be reprocessed. The mine is currently employing several mining methods, including overhand cut and fill for narrow veins, small mantos, and other minor deposits. A subset of caving methods are applied on the larger, but weak, mineral deposits, such as at the San Javier breccia and La Prieta breccia. La Encantada consists of vein, manto, breccia pipe, and chimney deposits with concentrations of silver, lead, iron, and zinc in oxidized mineralization enclosed by calcareous sedimentary formations of Cretaceous age. At deeper levels, there is sulphide mineralization in skarn with zinc and silver concentrations associated with a granodiorite intrusion.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research with the goal of automating underground coal mine roof bolters for greater mine safety. In the project described here, the Bureau has focused on automating the drilling portion of the drilling and bolting cycle. A drill monitoring system designed and developed by Parvus Corp. of Salt Lake City. UT, was placed on a Bureau model roof- bolting drill. The drilling parameters of torque, thrust, rotation rate, penetration rate, and position are monitored through sensors connected to an asynchronous, control-oriented local area network (LAN) that communicates with data-accumulating and data-processing nodes. By placing microprocessors at the two data nodes and at the valve control nodes, and combining these nodes with a personal computer (PC), the monitoring and control system can achieve parallel processing capabilities. Such capabilities are referred to as locally intelligent distributed processing. Only data that have changed significantly are reported through the LAN to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system mounted on an IBM- compatible 80286 PC. The SCADA system displays the values of the drilling parameters and calculates the specific energy of drilling, which is then used as an indicator of the type of rock being drilled. Besides monitoring the drilling process, an operator at the computer can control the rotation and thrust of the drill from a remote location through the SCADA program and can set drilling parameters on the basis of observed values of the specific energy of drilling.

HISTORICAL REVIEW OF BOARD OPERATIONS The Ontario Worker's Compensation Board was established in law enacted by the legislature of the Province of Ontario in 1915. It was designed to pay insurance benefits to injured workers, and at the same time to protect employers from legal suit. It was based upon an enquiry system rather than an adversary system such as that used in the courts process. Initially, the system was designed to pay compensation benefits and subsequently, to pay for the cost of medical treatment and pensions for disability and disease resultant from the effects of traumatic injury. In 1947, the Act was changed to include industrial or occupational generated diseases, not specifically related to traumatology. Such occupational diseases were therefore accepted and benefits paid subsequent to that date. As will be discussed in several minutes, even today the vast preponderance of compensation claims with the Ontario Board continues to be related to the effects of trauma. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS DECAY PRODUCTS In some areas of Ontario, especially in Northern Ontario, there is a natural leaching of radon gas from the underlying rock formation. This constitutes very low levels of radon gas decay product radiation exposure to those persons coming in contact and inhaling these substances. This paper however is designed to discuss the occupational generated types of radon gas exposures. For many years dating back to the 1930's, partially refined ores were being shipped from Northern Canada to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, still in operation and currently operated by Eldorado Nuclear Limited of Canada. Initially, the purpose for the operation was extraction of radium to be sold on world markets for medical treatment purposes. With the advent of World War II, this market collapsed. Subsequent to World War II, the availability of other sources of radiation for medical radio-therapy generally replaced the requirements for radium. During World War II, a new market opened up for the Port Hope refinery however as work into nuclear chain reactions and the development of the atomic bomb identified the need for uranium and enriched uranium. During the period of operations where radium was being extracted at the Port Hope refinery, it is now known that an identifiable radon gas hazard did exist. This hazard disappeared when the production line for extraction of radium ceased operations. In 1954, uranium mining operations opened up in Ontario at two locations, Bancroft and Elliot Lake. At the peak of operations, 16 mines were operational and 11,000 workers were employed in these mining operations. A high level of mining activity continued over a 10 year interval with the Bancroft Mines closing permanently in 1964 following a 10 year life of operation. The other mines in Elliot Lake closed about the same time with the exception of two uranium mine operations which have continued to be operational up to the present time. By 1965, due to a dramatic drop in world demand for uranium, the total work force had fallen to 1/10 of the peak work force, and approximately 1,300 workers remained in employment. It is of interest to note that one significant difference in the work environment between Elliot Lake and Bancroft was the high silica content of the Elliot Lake ore. This gave rise to a number of cases of silicosis developing in relatively short intervals of time in the Elliot Lake miner population. No cases of silicosis were identified from the Bancroft operations. Based upon the experience in investigating and evaluating actual cases of lung cancer in the uranium miners over the years, the medical staff at the Ontario Board also developed the impression that radiation levels were much higher in the Bancroft operations, especially in the earlier years of operation, than at Elliot Lake. This resulted in accumulation of higher levels of Working Level Months (WLM), usually over a shorter exposure interval in many of the cases. This aspect will be further evaluated in this presentation. Subsequent to 1965, the work force remained quite static in numbers until 1975. At that time, there began to develop an increase in the work force, and this increase is continuing at a moderate rate up to the present. INITIAL METHOD OF HANDLING LUNG CANCER CLAIMS The first lung cancer claims in Ontario from uranium mining operations were accepted on the perceived cause-effect relationship. This relationship was based upon the data from the Colorado observations and the Czechoslovakia data. Initially, a series of regression equations on mortality were developed and used to estimate the effect of exposure to low cumulative doses of radon daughters as it might relate to the frequency of occurrence of lung cancer at any particular cumulative exposure level. A probability of cancer being radiation induced as against it being caused from other factors was calculated. This method was discontinued subsequent to 1972 due to problems encountered in carrying out this complex evaluation. Thereafter, each case was dealt with on an individual basis, being based upon whether or not the tumour was of the oat cell type, a cumulative exposure in excess of 120 WLM; latency periods in excess of 10 years, commencement of mining prior to

A method of improving the efficiency of solid-liquid separation during centrifugal filtration has been developed. It consists of increasing the pressure drop across the filter cake using extraneous means such as pressurizing a filter chamber. This method, which may be referred to as hyperbaric centrifugation, is designed to increase filtration rate during the drainage cycle and, hence, to produce drier cake. In the present communication, the results obtained in a series of batch centrifugal filtration experiments are presented. The results obtained on fine coal and mineral samples show that cake moistures are approximately 50% lower than the case of using ambient pressure.

Common clay includes a wide variety of clay and other fine- grained rocks that are used in many ways. These clays are some- times classified as miscellaneous clay and shale. Most products made from them are fired and include such things as structural and face brick, drain tile, vitrified pipe, quarry tile, flue tile, conduit, pottery, stoneware, and roofing tile. Very large tonnages of these materials are bloated by firing to form lightweight aggregate, and large quantities are used in making portland cement (see the specific chapters in this volume). Uses not requiring firing of a finished product include filler for paint and other products and shale and clay used for packing dynamite in blastholes and for plugging oil and gas wells that are no longer in use.

The problem of measuring the amount of rock removed during a given time interval is faced by most mining operations. Many methods have been developed with varying degrees of success, dependent upon the mining method and the availability of usable data. The Rosebud Mine has been in production for nearly two years, employing several techniques to estimate monthly production from underground production stopes. The use of three-dimensional solids generated from survey data has greatly improved the reliability and confidence of monthly production reports. The authors will summarize the methodology currently being utilized at Rosebud.

A fundamental study of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of coarse Florida phosphate has led to some interesting discoveries. Studies by the US Bureau of Mines have shown that conditioning time and mixing intensity greatly affect the grades and recoveries of the phosphate minerals and quartz in the rougher concentrate. In particular, as the conditioning time or mixing intensity increased, the phosphate recovery remained constant while the amount of quartz floated decreased. This phenomenon is contrary to conventional wisdom and could lead to a more efficient coarse flotation circuit.
