Microcystaline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. Production of this silica, consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries but also sought after for many filler/extender uses, has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey and a very complete report was issued in 1953 (Report of Investigations No. 166), authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the silica ore has changed very little since the first reported production in 1906, although emphasis has been placed on the production of the finer sized grades to meet newer market requirements. Industrial Mineral Notes 40, published by the Illinois State Geological Survey in June 1970, describes a method by which a less than 1-micron fraction could be commercially produced from the readily available finest commercial grade presently being marketed (99% minus 10 microns). The finer grades exhibit to a lesser degree the reinforcement, high flatting efficiency, thickening and dry brightness properties associated with the synthetically produced silicas. It is expected that the extremely fine grades of microcrystaline silica will become accepted in the markets that now use a combination of precipitated silica and less expensive extender/filler minerals such as kaolin or calcium carbonate.

Ventilation conditions in working environments are usually studied by anemometry or, in complex cases, b using special tracer gases such as SF6 and 85Kr. in conjunction with chromatographic and radioactivity techniques, respectively. In some working environments, such as underground uranium mines, however, use can be made of the natural radioactivity environment (e.g.. 222rn. 220rn, and their progeny) to investigate mine ventilation conditions of practical interest. Theoretical studies and experimental data in several underground uranium mines and mine locations show that certain thoron progeny to radon progeny concentration ratios are very good indicators of ventilation conditions. Furthermore, the growth and decay of radon progeny and thoron progeny provide valuable information on mine air residence and clearance times. Some specific examples have been analyzed, such as bacterially-assisted uranium leaching operations in a partially enclosed stope, and the effect on the underground environment of turning ventilation fans on and off for a period of time. Air residence times and other variables of interest, determined from the mine radioactivity environment, were compared with more traditional techniques, such as anemometry and tracer gas chromatography. These studies were also extended to a wet non-uranium mine which exhibited relatively high concentrations of radon and its progeny.

Since the early 1960s, there have been efforts to develop and produce reliable continuous haulage systems capable of taking the full output of a continuous miner and transporting it, in one continuous flow, from the face to the tipple. The majority of the successful continuous haulage systems were placed in operation in the early 1970s. These were all of the bridge conveyor type. They usually consisted of bridges and mobile bridge carriers (MBC) attached at the inby end to the continuous miner and at the outby end to the panel conveyor itself. These successful bridge conveyor continuous haulage systems are either of the belted or chain type. The most successful belt type continuous haulage systems are those manufactured and marketed by the Long-Airdox Co. Until early 1977, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division manufactured and marketed the most successful chain conveyor type haulage sys¬tems. In 1977, Long-Airdox reentered the market with a chain-type system to complement its belted system. The original bridge-type continuous haulage system was introduced to the coal mining industry in the early 1960s by the old Long Co., a predecessor to the current Long-Airdox Co. These original units were of the chain conveyor type. In the early 1970s, there were also developments in continuous haulage, employing different material handling media. These in¬cluded the Serpentix, a flexible type belt, introduced by the Joy Manufacturing Co. There was also a serious attempt to introduce hydraulic-type continuous haulage by Consolidation Coal Co. and Conoco Research. Despite some startling successes, particularly with the bridge-type haulage systems, the general and widespread application of continuous haulage has eluded the mining industry. Some of the problems are related to underground conditions; others to people, both management and labor. One of the greatest obstacles to universal success continues to be the difficulty of accepting the philosophy as well as the machinery of continuous haulage. Nevertheless, efforts continue to spread the success of commercial and viable systems in the industry. There is also effort to improve on these systems, and on methods for their successful use. In addition, efforts continue, with private and public support, to develop new types of continuous haulage equipment and systems. Bridge Type System Developments Because they have already been successful in some US and overseas mines, new developments in bridge-type systems will first be touched on. The Long-Airdox Co. has continued to improve both its belted and chain continuous haulage system. In the belted system, the company recently introduced a new design that will be mainly applicable in higher coals and in noncoal mining applications, as shown in the accompanying figure. This new system is equipped with 305-mm-diam (12-in.-diam) pulleys in the bridges and mobile bridge carriers, in place of the 150-mm-diam (6 in.-diam) pulleys in the standard system. The modification is designed primarily to improve belt life and keep belt problems to a minimum. An operator, the Clinchfield Coal Co., a Division of Pittston Coal, developed the detaching of the bridge-type continuous haulage system from the miner by placing a mobile bridge carrier at the head of the string. However, Long-Airdox and Jeffrey have now made this an option to their at¬tached-type system. Where difficult shaft sinking conditions exist, it may be appropriate to use a blind drilling technique. The success of the method is in part due to the presence of a drilling mud which fills the shaft void during excavation. The mud performs two important functions with respect to shaft stability: it reduces the influence of groundwater; and, due to the mud weight, gives a positive sup- port to the shaft walls. The application of the method is illustrated by a case history which traces the development of a shaft from the initial investigation to determine the shaft location, through the evaluation of wall stability and mud requirements, to the shaft sinking contract and actual conditions encountered.

Rock slope failures in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee are a continuing problem. A study of the geotechnical factors affecting such slopes was conducted in this geologically complex region. Seven rock slopes, five of which had undergone failure, were identified and mapped. Other parameters were mapped in addition to the standard geologic and geometric parameters. These were joint frequencies across and down the slope, and surface hardness from Schmidt hammer tests. Regression analysis on the various data revealed that Schmidt hammer hardness correlates very well with joint cohesion back-calculated from failure geometries. This approach suggests an alternative means for estimating joint strength.

The capability for on-line measurement of the quality characteristics of conveyed coal now enables mine operators to take advantage of the inherent heterogeneity of those streams and split them into wash and no-wash stocks. Relative to processing the entire stream, this reduces the amount of coal that must be washed at the mine and, thereby reducing processing costs, recovery losses and refuse-genera¬tion levels. In this paper, new ap¬proaches for optimal control of the segregation process using time-se¬ries models and empirical distribu¬tions are presented and demon¬strated using field data.

The principle of high-pressure interparticulate comminution has been used very successfully since the mid 1980's for grinding a wide range of different materials. A number of reports about operating experience have already been published. High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) are currently making their debut in the mining industry. Experience is being gained with test machines, particularly for the comminution of hard rock. In the grinding of diamond-bearing ore, (Fig 1) interparticulate comminution has already become the standard for liberating the diamonds from the matrix. The advantages of interparticulate comminution are also recognized for the grinding of concentrates (chrome ore, iron ore). Numerous HPGRs are being used very successfully in this field. A testing plant for first-time industrial grinding of coarse, very hard and highly abrasive copper ore was built at Cyprus Amax's plant in Sieretta, Arizona (Fig. 2). The operating experience gained here showed that the grinding of very hard ores places particularly high mechanical demands on the mill. While the machine itself meets the high availability requirements, the wear-protection system proves to be the most sensitive point. Naturally, the properties of the ore to be ground exert a considerable influence on the lifetime of the grinding rolls. This paper describes the wear mechanisms and the wear­protection systems designed to combat these.

A unique process for removing cyanide and base metal complexes from industrial waste streams was patented by G.J. Borberly et al. (1984). The process uses SO2 (liquid or gas, or solutions of sulfite salts, or from burning elemental sulfur), plus air that is dispersed in the effluent using a well agitated vessel. Acid produced in the oxidation reactions is neutralized with lime at a controlled pH generally in the range 7 to 10. The reaction requires the presence of soluble copper as a catalyst which can be supplemented by copper sulfate if necessary. The process can be applied to the detoxification of gold and silver mining waste streams, such as carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailing pulps, barren solution bleeds, pond waters and heap leach rinse solutions and also to plating shops wastewaters. The SO.jAir process has substantial advantages over two of the main alternative methods of cyanide destruction, namely alkaline chlorination and hydrogen peroxide. Alkaline chlorination is highly penalized in terms of reagent consumption. Chlorine is a strong oxidant reacting with species other than cyanide present in the effluent such as thiocyanate and sulfides. Furthermore alkaline chlorination is an incomplete detoxification process. Iron cyanide is not removed and the potential for harmful by-products species exist. Consequently final effluents may be subject to additional treatment in order to comply with regulatory demands.

Underground mine service water in South Africa is used for dust suppression and cooling the environment as well as the pneumatic rock drills. Although the chilled water is not intended for potable use, it is often used as drinking water by mining personnel. Furthermore, droplets sprayed are liable to be inhaled. The water is recirculated on a continuous basis and is a potential source of infection by intestinal microorganisms or water-borne diseases such as cholera or typhoid. In order to protect the health of the underground workforce it is customary to disinfect the chilled service water, The bacteriological quality of the water is monitored by enumerating total aerobic bacteria (TAB), total coliforms (C C) and Escherichia coli (E Coli). E coli is an indicator of human faeca_l __ - -- contamination, The bacteriological standard specified by the Anglo American Corporation for mine service water is less than 3000 TA B per 100ml, less than 2 CC per ml and the total absence of E Coli. There are several disinfecting agents available for use. Among these are UV irradiation, ozone, chlorine dioxide and compounds that produce hypobromous and hypochlorous acids. Historically, the methods of treatment have been chlorine based and include the use of gaseous chlorine (surface installations only), calcium hypochlorite granules or tablets, chlorinated cyanurate tablets, sodium hypochlorite solutions and hypochlorite produced by electrolysis.

"INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.

Everywhere you turn today there are articles on artificial intelligence and the rapid emergence of expert systems. Expert systems form a class of software that has developed as a result of the large research effort to develop computers and software that think intelligently. By definition, an expert system is a computer program that contains the knowledge component of an expert skill, can offer intelligent advice and justify its line of reasoning. Expert systems can advise people on what actions to take and when, assist in the diagnosis of the physical condition of a human patient or piece of equipment, or even take actions without human guidance, as in process control applications. Expert systems can also explain the line of reasoning behind a particular piece of advice or query for information from the user. Expert systems can be used as advisors to newcomers in any field in which mastery is attained by many years of experience. They often can provide expertise more uniformly and rapidly than human experts. Expert systems can also provide a means of documenting expert knowledge and procedures and provide a common repository for a changing knowledge base. The expert system can represent the best expertise available, thought out in the absence of pressure situations. Each of these attributes or characteristics should be helpful in improving typical concentrator control systems.

The fine coal fraction of a coal stream is that fraction which contains particles essentially in the -28 mesh size range. This fraction will normally first appear, in a coal preparation process, as a result of classification to segregate raw coal into various size components for beneficiation. More specifically, it could appear in desliming screen underfiow, classifying cyclone overflow, and in other process circuit components. It's recognized that the top size of this fraction has been determined more by secondary reasons, such as desliming screen area for the heavy medium cyclone circuit, the dewatering equipment for the fine clean coal, or even the stability of the refuse thickener circuit. Benefits, both economic and environmental, gained by beneficiating the fine coal fraction of a raw coal stream are increasing in number, until today, fine coal beneficiation is a necessity in most coal operations requiring any degree of preparation. This is due to some of the following reasons: • In the past it was frequently more economical to discard -28 mesh raw coal sizes than to recover the coal values from them. Today, mining costs have escalated to the point where all coal values leaving the mine should report to the finished product if possible. • Today's mining methods are producing run-of-mine coals containing higher percentages of -28 mesh sizes. This heavily weighs the economic balance in favor of beneficiating this fraction. As much as 25% of the run-of-mine coal from some mines is in the fine coal fraction. Beneficiation is recommended so that clean coal contained in the fraction can be recovered to reduce the loss of coal values. • Existing and pending environmental regulations mandate that solid fuels now consumed in power station boilers contain almost no pyritic sulfur. This form of sulfur appears in raw coal in the fine coal fraction, but can be removed by coal beneficiation. Environmental considerations dictate that every year, more of the fine coal produced for steam generating purposes in the US be beneficiated. To deliberately discard any portion of the fine coal can only add to this cost, not only in the sense that fewer tons will be recovered but, more importantly, additional tonnage will be diverted to the most capital- and labor-intensive section of the entire preparation plant-the fine refuse dewatering section. It is apparent to preparation engineers that dewatering and ultimate disposal of the fine refuse derived from this beneficiation step is certainly the most difficult technical problem presented in the entire plant design. Therefore, any beneficiation procedure which increases the fine coal recovery, or in any manner decreases the tonnage of fine refuse to be dewatered, is going to be cost effective. Since the -28 mesh fraction contains both coal and refuse particles in their finest particle sizes and thus presents the greatest degree of liberation, one would immediately infer that the highest degree of beneficiation would be achieved. From underground instrumentation data and from direct observation of longwall panels, it was demonstrated that growth of the main-roof overhang causes an extremely high roof weighting on the face supports. This can result in catastrophic effects on the supports when the roof-weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on the characteristics of main-roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations along the face. The study was based on monitored shield data, theoretical analysis and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed to define the main-roof failure modes and to understand the maximum roof-weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main-roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield's initial-setting condition and to the final failure mode of the main roof.

The spreading-ridge, or accreting plate margin, is the primary conduit of metals delivered to the earth's surface. Isotope ratios of lead show primitive mantle values at these sites, indicating that this is true. We can use lead isotopes in any mineral deposit to indicate the degree to which the metal is "primitive" in the sense of having been uncontaminated with U-enriched crust or "crustal" in the sense that it has been cycling at the earth's surface since earlier times. The reason for this is that the upper continental crust has an enrichment in the ratio of U/Pb over that in the mantle, so that old continental leads have a larger radiogenic component. The primitive metals delivered to the surface at the spreading-ridge are transported on the oceanic plate until they reach a subduction zone. Here they become cycled in the "orogen". However, in this process the primitive metals are mixed with metals from the continent so that the average lead isotope ratios are between those in the mantle and the average upper continental crust. Subsequently a part of the metals in the orogen may become fixed in a new block of continent. However there are processes which continue to uplift and erode ancient continental regions so that there is a continuous feeding back of metals to the orogen. We have therefore a cycling of metals from the existing continental crust into the orogen where they are mixed with new contributions from the spreading ridge and mantle.

Drainage of tailings impoundments is a key issue for impoundment stability, water control, seepage control, and reclamation. Drainage control is an established operating practice where climate and site conditions permit, such as in South Africa and various mines in North America. In these areas, drainage control is primarily used to maximize tailings densities and to provide adequate impoundment stability. Drainage practices during operation also become an important issue when tailings impoundments are reclaimed. Time required for cover placement and post- reclamation seepage control depends greatly on the ability for tailings to drain and consolidate. This paper discusses drainage issues associated with gold tailings impoundments in terms of mechanics of saturated and unsaturated flow and experience with design and reclamation of tailings impoundments.

The wide distribution of limestone and dolomite and the decentralization of the depedent industries give the State Geological Survey a major role in the, development of these mineral resources. The amount of geological information necessary for efficient exploration is so large that few companies can afford to do the necessary basic field work or store the data. The state surveys fill these responsibilities and thus might be said to serve as the geological research departments of the limestone and dolomite industry. At the Indiana Geological Survey, the data of most value to limestone producers are in the form of unpublished measured sections, well records, cores, chemical analyses, directories, and geologic maps. Much of this information is published in summary form. The Survey also assists individual members of industry in exploration and evaluation of mineral deposits. In addition, a progressive State Survey provides the geological infor¬mation necessary for the development of new resources which do not appear to justify industry's own preliminary efforts.

Analyses of jointed, cracked, and fractured rock masses are needed in a variety of applications, including estimates of reduced elastic modulus for damaged rock, estimates of permeability changes as a function of stress changes, and estimates of relaxed regions due to excavation. A numerical model of a jointed rock mass, the compliant joint model, was used to study the response of a jointed rock mass near a circular excavation. The joint constitutive model was linear elastic in shear and nonlinear elastic in the relationship between normal stress and joint closure. Initial stresses were geostatic and representative of stresses in a granitic jointed rock mass approximately 300 m deep. The joint properties were based on values that are representative of joints in granite. The results from numerical simulations were compared with analytical results for stress near a circular opening in an elastic medium having reduced Young's Moduli to simulate jointing effects on the rock mass. The differences in response between the two models resulted from the differences in the symmetry of elastic properties, the shear modulus of the continua, and the constitutive relations in the two models. For example, the non- linear anisotropic elastic continuum described by the compliant joint model resulted in vertical stress concentrations near the side of the circular opening that were 25 percent higher than the vertical stress concentrations in an isotropic linear elastic medium. The equivalent Young's Moduli in the vertical and horizontal directions of the compliant joint continuum deviated by as much as 50 percent from the values assigned to the modeled region prior to excavations. The perturbations of the elastic Young's Moduli extended to distances of two to three radii from the opening.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. The Chino concentrator commenced operation in 1982 as a SAG-ball mill circuit which could process 37,500 stpd of ore. Since 1982, a series of process improvements such as the addition of two stages of SAG recycle crushing, allowed throughputs to increase to more than 48,000 stpd, at the expense of significantly coarser flotation feed sizing and reduced recovery. To compensate a third (tertiary) stage of grinding consisting of four 1250 hp Vertimills was installed which has allowed the flotation feed size and recovery to return to historical levels. The design and operational characteristics of the Tertiary Grinding Circuit are described.
