The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground-water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is obviously a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use, Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.15 to 0.60. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

Traverse anemometry is still widely used today. In this paper an investigation of the influence of three factors which are believed to contribute to the resulting error of the method, is reported. They are the shape of the traversing path, the size of the vane anemometers and the air velocity pattern. These factors are experimentally studied on a test facility developed specially for this purpose. Taking into account the results of 576 measurement sessions, as well as published information, some preliminary conclusions are drawn, and additional questions are raised.

The throughput and energy efficiency of comminution circuits is reduced when ore characteristics change, causing bottlenecks in some portions of the circuit while leaving excess capacity in others. The results of analysis of three years of daily grinding circuit operating data for a full-scale plant has shown that the location of bottle-necks in the circuit will change depending on the nature of the feed ore. The circuit tends to be limited by the primary mill capacity when the ore hardness increases, and limited by the secondary mill capacity with softer ores. Two methods are considered for shifting load in the circuit to relieve bottlenecks by taking advantage of excess capacity in other parts of the circuit: 1) Addition of supplemental comminution operations, such as high-pressure grinding rolls, to process specific size fractions that are not handled efficiently by the primary mill; and 2) Use of screens to shift grinding load upstream from the secondary mills back to the primary mills. In the case of the plant examined in this study, it was found that 58% of the time there was sufficient excess capacity in the primary mills that the throughput of the circuit could have been increased by using screens to shift the grinding load from the secondary mills to the primary mills.

Six-fold, high-resolution, compressional-wave seismic data were acquired across a coal mining property in the Meigs County study area, southeastern Ohio, with a view to differentiating the Clarion Coal Member and a truncating channel sandstone prior to longwall mining without costly drilling. The seismic technique, as is illustrated by our example data, was successfully used to map those areas where the coal is present, as well as those places where it was eroded by incising fluvial streams. Our results demonstrate that the seismic reflection method, using an engineering seismograph, can be a cost-effective way to define discontinuities associated with coal seams.

Introduction Mining operations require maps for each phase of project development. Engineering plans, cross-sections, and isometric drawings are also needed. Maps are used for geologic interpretation, reserve estimation, permitting, property acquisition, site studies, development work, and production. Maps and drawings are essential to mining. They provide needed information. Generating these products, however, requires many manhours. The filing and organization of maps and drawings is cumbersome, due to their size. Major map changes can necessitate the production of entirely new documents and, thus, additional manhours. The volume of maps and drawings generated in the life of a single project can be extensive. For example, some utility companies have data bases containing more than a million individual maps (one reported eight million). These problems were considered necessary evils in the past. Now, with the automation of map and drawing production, improvements can be realized. Computer-aided mapping and design offers a new approach for the production, management, and storage of drawings and maps. This approach promises benefits in time management, productivity, efficiency, and flexibility. In all economic projects, the bottom line is cost reduction. And implementing computer-based mapping and design techniques can lower costs and increase project profitability. AM/FM/CAD/CAM Automated Mapping/Facility Management (AM/FM) and Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) are becoming buzz words in the engineering world. Most relevant to mining are the concepts of AM and CAD. These terms relate to the application of computers, specifically computer graphic technology, to mapping and design. CAD refers primarily to the design of components and structures in two and three dimensions. But it can apply to the three dimensional modeling of mine workings, ore bodies, and geologic structures AM refers to the automation of conventional map production. AM/CAD systems use computers to store, manipulate, produce, and update drawings and maps in two and three dimensions. Ideally, the calculating capabilities of computers are also used in conjunction with design and drawing generation, offering capabilities not available with conventional, manual mapping and design processes. To better understand concepts associated with AM and CAD applications, the understanding of a few computer-related terms is necessary. Table 1 explains some of these terms. System Features The capabilities of AM/CAD systems are based on viewing transformations. These are the basic, manipulative tools by which AM/CAD packages generate visual representations of data. Examples include the rotation of a three-dimensional object through space, the expansion or contraction of maps to fit a given scale, enlargements of small areas on maps or drawings for detailed viewing, and the generation of cross-sections from three dimensional data. Nothing in Turkey is simple. Its his¬tory is long and convoluted, its culture fascinating, its metallogeny diverse, and its geology very complex. This article will focus on the geology of western Anatolia and the precious metals poten¬tial of this third of Turkey. Any gold produced by mines in Tur¬key since the early 1900s has been a by-product of the mining for other met¬als, such as copper from the massive sulfide deposits of the Pontics. Archaeological records, however, prove that gold was mined from the Pactolus (present day Gediz) River and refined by Croesus at Sardis in about 550 BC. Other records and legends make it possible that gold was mined before 1200 BC for the Homeric City of Troy (Priams treasure?) about 25 km (15 miles) east of Canakkale at Mad¬endag and Kartaldag. A final legend of antiquity suggesting gold in what is now Turkey relates to King Midas. And, indeed, the city-state belonging to a king of that name has been recognized near the city of Eskise¬hir. More recently, precious metals have been mined at Madendag-Kartaldag in the late 1800s. Arapdag, near Izmir, remains the only "authenticated" epith¬ermal precious metal deposit in Turkey (Mosier et al., 1985). With this spotty record, why the sud¬den interest shown by at least five Euro¬pean-based, three or four US-based, and several other international mining firms and their Turkish subsidiaries? Like other aspects of Turkey, the complete answer is not simple but, reduced to its basics, has three parts. Turkey, relative to many developing nations, has a stable, democratic form of government (although it also has a for¬midable bureaucracy) whose currency exchange rate is premised on the US dollar. New laws promulgated since 1983 have opened the country and welcomed foreign investment. Some have even provided investment incentives. The Mining Law of August 1985 made sweeping reforms of the old land tenure system. This law made it possible for a foreign-based company to have a wholly-owned Turkish subsidiary en¬gaged in mining. Equally important is the belated recognition that western Anatolia, while geologically compli¬cated, is today basically a province Neogene extensional tectonics having many of the geologic attributes of the leading gold producing province of the US - the Basin and the Range. Geologic rationale for precious metals exploration Tectonic/lithologic framework: Alle¬gorically and simplistically, Anatolia during early Neogene (middle Miocene) can be likened to a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. It is squeezed in the vise formed by the Arabian plate mi¬grating north toward the southwest end of a stable Asian platform. The "tube" was compressed. It could not expand to the east because it was sealed by what is now southern Russia and Iran. The filling of the tube escaped to the west, in the direction in which the cap was miss¬ing (Fig. 1). So developed during the middle to late Miocene the western-most struc¬tural province of Anatolia. This was done by a process aptly termed tectonic "escape" by Sengor et al (1985). This province is dominated by exten¬sional tectonics much like the Basin and Range of the western US and has an estimated extension of between 30% and 50%. The most striking manifesta¬tion of this extension is the 10 to 11 major east-west trending grabens (Ge¬diz, Buyuk Mendares, Kocuk Mendares, etc.) and intervening horsts, although a much greater number of smaller, gener¬ally northeast-striking grabens and half

Platinum group metals (PGM) are often found in close association with arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the susceptibilities of the arsenic minerals to oxidation and subsequent losses of their recoveries in cleaner flotation stages. The use of a nitrogen atmosphere in grinding and in flotation, the effectiveness of activation for improving their floatabilities, and the role that electrochemical interactions play not only between grinding media and minerals, but also among different minerals, are discussed.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. Static electricity can also be an arc source and may be generated by air flowing through rubber bases or a rapidly moving endless belt. A spark is generally associated with abrasion of iron metal. This article concludes a two-part series on the safety, technology, and economic impact of eliminating safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mines. Discussed are the consequences of fuse abolishment, the technical feasibility of changing to an alternative system, and an economic analysis of initiation systems. Last month, part one (ME, pages 31-35) described current use of initiation systems, incidence of accidents, and consumption values for safety fuse and other initiation systems. Consequences of Fuse Abolishment Cap and Fuse Manufacturers Two major safety fuse manufacturers, Ensign Bickford and Apache Powder Co., share the US fuse market. Marketing of Ensign Bickford safety fuse is done by Dupont. Dupont manufactures electric caps as a main product and recently introduced a new nonelectric initiation system (Detaline). Therefore, Dupont would be only slightly affected by the elimination of safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mining. Ensign Bickford, though a larger manufacturer of fuse, does not appear to emphasize the safety fuse market. In fact, safety fuse sales represent only about 10% of Ensign Bickford's total sales volume. Ensign Bickford is strongly pushing its Nonel product. It appears, therefore, that the elimination of safety fuse would have a limited effect on Ensign Bickford, and could ultimately be to the company's advantage. Apache Powder Co., however, would be seriously affected if safety fuse was eliminated. Safety fuse, although not its only product, constitutes a major source of revenue for the company. It currently does not manufacture a substitute product. Apache Powder Co.'s manager agrees that prohibiting the use of safety fuse would result in a greater market share of initiators for Ensign Bickford. Hercules could also benefit from the prohibition of safety fuse. Metal and Nonmetal Mining Industry According to an explosive company contact, elimination of safety fuse by a mandatory regulation would force some of the small, marginal mines out of business. Another powder company representative believes that eliminating safety fuse will result in uneasy situations for small operators not familiar with other techniques. These operators try to minimize the costs and traditionally like safety fuse. He believes that insufficient proof exists to substantiate the overall safety increase if the fuse is eliminated. Fuse manufacturers and distributors disagree, then, about the impact of safety fuse elimination. However, they tend to agree on some important points: • Safety fuse can be a safe method if applied properly. • Electric blasting can be dangerous due to stray currents, and may have higher misfire rates than safety fuse. • It is very difficult to compare the rate of misfires and partial round failures for different systems. This is due simply to the nonavailability of such data. In many cases, the misfires are not even reported to the shift boss, as required by regulations. • Safety fuse has high acceptance in certain applications, such as a face where Nonel or detonating cord are used, or in open-pit blasting. • The safety fuse industry appears to be phasing out on its own. It is expected that the fate of the safety fuse market will be similar to that of black powder. An investigation by Nitro Noble of Sweden "clearly states that the diminishing use of safety fuse has considerably reduced the accidents in Swedish mines." Mine Data Acquisition and Analysis As a part of the study effort, visits were arranged to 24 metal and nonmetal mines. In most cases, underground visits were accomplished. At least one drilling and loading operation was witnessed. The mines were grouped into four mining areas: Wyoming, Montana, Idaho; western Colorado and eastern Utah; Missouri; and southern Arizona. Of all mines visted, the safety fuse system was used in 11 mines, electrical system in seven, Nonel in five, and the Hercudet system in one surface mine. At each mine, the manager, foreman, and blasting crew were interviewed for information and opinions. Besides informal discussions with mine officials, a questionnaire was also filled out for each mine. Due to the extensive length of the information gathered, these data are not presented here.

Geostatistics has been applied in many mining feasibility studies throughout the world during the last decade. Recently geostatistics has begun to be applied to the field of mining processes by attempting to aid in the definition of the best mining policy. For a feasibility study the grade-tonnage relationships give a reasonable order of magnitude estimate of the ore reserves within the deposit. But the reserves that will actually be recovered, will vary depending upon the mining methods and the technical means used. The profit earning capacity of the mining project is determined by a great many factors, such as for instance: accessibility of reserves to extracting machines, the haulage distance between the mine and the mill, the variability of produced ore (tonnage and grades) which could necessitate stockpiles or blending areas?

The cementation kinetics of silver with aluminum particles were studied with model solutions under nitrogen atmosphere, varying the temperature, aluminum/silver ratio, pH and concentrations of thiourea and surface activator Recoveries were evaluated both by solution concentrations and by REDOX measurements. Tafel curves were determined for this system. The results showed the cementation process to be essentially independent of the pH and thiourea concentration. However, a strong influence was observed with respect to temperature, aluminum/silver ratio and the quantity of activator. There is evidence that the controlling step is the dissolution of aluminum oxide from the particle surface.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) are one of the most promising systems for groundwater remediation. PRB are constructed with the purpose to intercept the contaminated flow and to degrade it as a big reactive filter. The most common type of reactive barriers is realized by excavating a trench and by filling it with a substance able to treat the contaminants dissolved in the water. Another type of PRB is obtained by realizing a line of wells in which chemically active compounds are injected. A new method for barrier construction has been studied at DIGITA?s laboratories. It makes use of the waterjet technology to increase soil permeability and to inject active compounds. This technology is especially suitable in the case of deep contaminated aquifers where traditional construction methods are difficult to apply. The paper describes the experimental apparatus especially designed and constructed and the activities carried out to investigate the relationship between waterjet operative parameters and the penetration of the jet in the soil. In conclusion, on the basis of the experimental results, the economical feasibility of the technique is evaluated.

The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. Declining US ore grades along with skyrocketing energy, materials, labor, and regulatory costs underscored the urgency for technological innovation in the mineral processing area. Re¬liance on the scale-up and automation of unit operations was the sector's primary battle plan. Debate continues on the upper size limit of concentrating plants and whether process controls should be centralized or distributed in the mill. In the materials handling area, the economics of large-scale and mobile systems, particularly conveyors, were well documented in the literature. Comminution, the most costly and energy consuming area of the processing flowsheet, saw improvements in process controls and liner designs. The trend toward larger grinding units stalled somewhat during the year owing to some operational problems at commercial plants. Research and development of apparently less expensive physical separation processes-that also boast recovery of cleaner and more environmentally acceptable products -gained momentum during the year. Because of escalating capital cost requirements for new plant capacity, the year saw a greater interest by mill designers to re-examine existing capacity. The focus here is clearly to modify or retrofit unit operations with more efficient components as an alternative to installing more costly new equipment. Modern tunnel boring machines are subject to excessive cutter wear and bearing failures when used in hard and abrasive rock. In very hard rock, the high cost of cutter and bearing replacement, combined with slower excavation progress, make it more economical to drive tunnels by conventional drill and blast methods. The use of high pressure water jets to break rock provides a promising alternative. Experimental data indicate that the specific energy (the energy expended per unit volume of rock broken) decreases as the water jet pressure increases. Continuous jets are generally limited to pressures below 100,000 psi, whereas pulsed jets from a water cannon can attain much higher pressures. Therefore, the Federal Railroad Administration of the U. S. Department of Transportation has sponsored the design (Ref. 1 & 2) and the fabrication and testing (Ref. 3 & 4) of a water cannon to determine its effectiveness in rock disintegration at very high pressures. This paper reports the results of laboratory tests with pulsed jets against large rock samples at pressures of 125,000 to 650,000 psi and field tests against dolomitic limestone and granitic gneiss at pressures near 450,000 psi. Although initial tests were made with a small nozzle, operating at off-design conditions (Ref. 4), this paper only covers results with the full-size nozzle, including 55 laboratory test shots and 67 field test shots.

Murray mine was one of the first Mechanized cut and fill underground gold operations in Northern Nevada. At the end of 2002 mine production began to decline and Murray entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary, in previously condemned areas, and in highly challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering, and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed Murray to remain in operation today. History The Murray mine is located on the Jerritt Canyon property, which is located 45 miles north of Elko, NV in the Independence mountain range. Mining operations started at Jerritt Canyon in 1980 out of several open pits. In 1993 underground mining began in conjunction with a decline of surface mining operations. The transition from surface mining to underground mining moved the property into a new era. At the time there were limited examples of successful underground operations in the area from which to draw experience. Several mining methods were attempted with varying degrees of success and underhand cut and fill proved to be the most effective method. To date Murray has mined 1.2 million ounces at an average grade of .335 OPT utilizing this mining method.

Improving the state-of-the-art of tunneling is a continuing challenge to those involved in underground construction. New methods and procedures are usually evolved over a relatively long period of time as compared to advancements in other types of construction. To a large extent this is probably due to the fact that tunneling deals with a material or medium - the rock structure - whose physical properties are not only extremely varied, but in many instances virtually unknown until time of penetration. This hovering of the unknown tends to make "non believers" of many and at best leads to a general reluctancy of accepting new ideas or procedures. The situation is further complicated by: 1) discrepancies in terminology and respective meanings as used by different disciplines to describe, define or evaluate pertinent factors and their relative effect on the tunneling process and 2) the fact that no two tunneling situations are identical with respect to either geological conditions or construction and contractual requirements. In spite of the above there have been many successfully completed tunnels which make it apparent that both the technical and practical expertise needed to develop or project improvements is available within the industry. The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 = 21 µm) is enhanced near the point-of-zero-charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and by adjusting the pH to precipitate surface-active metal hydroxy species, which promote agglomeration and produce low-moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and the correlations among them are presented.
