The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to Stephen Bechtel and the Bechtel Corp. in recognition of Bechtel's 100th anniversary and the company's outstanding service to the mining industry. Over ten years ago, Modular began development and implementation of its DISPATCH System for haulage optimization in open pit mines and now has over two dozen systems in operation worldwide. The so-called 'top down' approach used in system design and implementation was deliberate. This foresight now allows addition of features which would otherwise prove infeasible - without complete system redesign. Until recently, truck and shovel operator input provided timing data needed for optimal allocation. Now, addition of a high-speed, general purpose token ring loop controller and infrared (IR) transponders to each piece of mining equipment automates these important functions. Here, we discuss new devices, systems, and subsystems comprising mining's future.

The design of underground nuclear waste disposal facilities poses new problems related to the requirement of long term safety against radionuclide migration. The degree and effects of rock disturbance caused by construction and by the long term thermal effects from the hot waste must be predicted with confidence. Computer modeling can, to an extent, be verified by accelerated near-surface tests. Credible extrapolation to deep, long-term conditions requires successful near-surface modeling verification, proper characterization of near-surface and deep rocks, and successful determination of in-situ stresses. Excavation induced disturbance may be assessed primarily by empirical evidence.

Gold mining has undergone a massive revival in Australia within the past decade. With very few exceptions, these operations are involved with the development of deposits which have been previously and partially worked by underground methods. In most cases, current operations have involved the open cut mining of near-surface remnants or low-grade hanging wall and footwall mineralisation. A growing number of mines are, however, progressing to the development of underground workings either as extensions of existing open cuts or as "stand alone" projects. These operations vary in scale from the Kalgoorlie operations of North Kalgurli Mines Limited and Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to the small scale "gouging" operations of individuals and partnerships. The individual production rates rarely exceed 200 000 tonnes per year, primarily because of the magnitude of reserves or the style of access available for rehabilitation. The narrow-vein mines were initially re-opened using the traditional methods, in particular shrinkage stoping and cut-and-fill stoping. As a result of experience gained in various ground conditions, certain variants have become popular. This paper investigates the fate of the traditional methods in Australian practice, and reviews some of the recently applied variants. This involves not only a perusal of current practices, but also an assessment of the influence of recent technological development on the economics of narrow-vein mining. Some consideration is also given to the effects of previously employed stoping techniques on efforts to access remnant blocks in the re-development of old mines.

Contaminated mine drainage presents a potential hazard for aquatic ecosystems and groundwater resources. Reliable predictions of long-term developments in seepage quality are necessary to select reasonable decommissioning options and remediation measures for waste-rock heaps during mine closure and/or mining site rehabilitation to minimize future risks and environmental hazards. Extensive geochemical modeling work was used to assess the consequences of various remediation options for waste rock heaps at a former uranium mine in Eastern Germany. The predicted contaminant discharges are used for an assessment of long- term benefits of decommissioning alternatives to derive conclusions for sustainable remediation measures using risk-based cost/benefit analyses.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

Pretreatment of sulfidic refractory gold ore by biooxidation in coarse-crushed ore heaps is a promising new technology, especially for low-grade ores that cannot afford pressure leaching or roasting. An algebraic equation for determining the economically optimum biooxidation of the sulfide minerals in the ore is provided that is based on the empirical biooxidation rate constant for the ore, the project's financial discount rate, the ore grades of both refractory and non-refractory gold, and the gold price. Then, the economically optimum duration of bioheap pretreatment, t$, is determined from its logarithmic relation to the optimum fractional extent of ore biooxidation, F$, through the ore's biooxidation rate constant. In doing so, it is assumed that the ore is adequately crushed and amenable to bioheap pretreatment and that the cumulative oxidation of the ore with time is known from ore testing so that the rate constant can be determined.

Introduction The success of in situ leaching depends upon: • maintaining adequate injection and recovery flow capacities in wells, and • distributing leach solution effectively to contact and leach ore minerals within the target zone. Solution balance is an important indicator of the capability of a particular in situ hydrologic design to efficiently and effectively control and distribute leach solution within the target ore zone. As part of ongoing hydrological investigations into in situ leaching, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is studying factors affecting solution balance in an unsaturated copper ore deposit at the Cyprus Casa Grande Mine. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of hydrogeologic features and in situ operating conditions on changes, during leaching, in: • solution storage within the deposit, and • solution balance. At the Casa Grande Mine, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility, solution balance estimates are obtained for 10 selected intervals during 17 months of leaching under a variety of well configurations, pressures and flow conditions. Operational and geological description The Casa Grande Mine is located 32 miles south of Casa Grande, AZ. The mining area is within the Casa Grande Deposit, a porphyry copper stock consisting primarily of an intensely-fractured, granodiorite cap overlying a copper sulfide base. As a result of mine dewatering activity, unsaturated conditions existed in the deposit prior to leaching (Schmidt et al., 1990; Friedel and Schmidt, 1991). No groundwater was present in any of the in-situ-leaching, test-facility wells after drilling and prior to leach solution injection. Also, no ground water seepage occurs in the test-facility drift. The Casa Grande, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility consists of 58 injection and recovery wells collared in an underground drift. The wells were drilled at various angles into the granodiorite deposit in a series of 15 divergent fans (Fig. 1). The fans are 12.5 ft apart and lie parallel to one another between the 900- and 1100-level drifts. Each fan contains three to five wells drilled at angles ranging from 6° to 89° from the horizontal. The wells can operate in an injection or a recovery mode. Currently, 36 flow sensors and 28 pressure transducers (part of a hydrologic, data acquisition system) are used to continuously monitor injection-well flow rates and pressures.

Techniques of testing perlite require a combination of art and science. The modifications made to the perlite Corp. vertical laboratory furnace include addition of instrumentation, flowmeters, vibrators, automatic feeders, and regulators. The basic testing sequence consists of expanded density, furnace yield, compacted density, percent sinkers, and compaction resistance. These tests are modified versions of those specified by the Perlite Institute. This sequence is designed as a preliminary evaluation of a material's suitability for horticultural-aggregate end uses rather than a detailed measure of filtration capability.

To detect the place and range of fire is one of the key technologies in the extinction of coal mine underground fire. A fire-prevention and extinction research team of Shanxi Mining College have successfully carried out a program detecting the place of fire with radon. In the past four years the authers have done the detecting work in several mines in Shanxi Province, such as Gujao, Xuangang Louan and Ningwu. The place and scope and the trend of underground fire of coal mine can be now exactly estimated. The data and information from detecting provide a reliable basis for drawing up the scheme to extinguish underground fire and extract mineral coal securely. The principle and method of fire detecting based on radon on surface, the data processing and analysis are discussed in this paper.

A combined theoretical and laboratory test program is described with the purpose of providing a useful model of the multiple radial fracturing process. A non-quantitative conceptual model is developed as the basis for detailed mathematical modeling and test planning. The model includes borehole pressurization, flaw rupture, and gas- driven fracture propagation phases. The laboratory tests are carried out in blocks of scaled rock simulant loaded to a true three-dimension stress state and with miniature propellant/explosive charges in a wellbore as the fracturing energy source. The conceptual model, fracture initiation modeling, and laboratory test setup have been completed and are described. The remaining work is ongoing

Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps consisting of water and solid particles. The solids usually consist of particles of different sizes, shapes and densities. Except in the special case of monocharacteristic particles, the particles are segregated by these differences in size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops a segregation theory that indicates the major variables involved. Experimental data on segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and nonmagnetic minerals are reported.

"Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

Taking into account the possibilities of condensation of water vapour contained in air during its flow through a series of spot coolers as well as formation of eventual fog, a mathematical model of dynamic temperature, specific humidity and degree of fogging of cooled air in underground mining galleries with direct ventilation is developed. In the gallery, there situated various heat and moisture sources both of distributive and of concentrated types. The model is represented by three partial differential equations of first order. The cases of cooling with full as well as with partial air stream flowing through the gallery are distinguished. Owing to the fact that in practical designing, more important is the knowledge of the variation process of temperature, specific humidity and fogging of cooled mine air at steady state conditions, the model is modified to a set of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Based on the presented algorithm, the obtained set of ordinary differential equations is numerically solved which enables to: • specify the distribution of temperature, specific humidity, relative humidity and degree of fogging of cooled air in mining galleries; • determine the cooling powers of air coolers for their known locations; • indicate the locations of the coolers of known cooling powers. Exemplary calculations of temperature and relative humidity of cooled air are presented graphically in a number of diagrams.

Computer generated magnetic field reference signa- tures of steel cord belt splices are used to evaluate lay-up and fabrication irregularities of splices in operating conveyors. Used as a quality inspection tool, magnetic signature analysis is useful in auditing data collected by general non-destructive testing (NDT) consultants. The evaluation can detect irregularities that weaken a splice, as well as detecting signature changes that can be indicative of adhesion loss. The evaluation can be applied to any NDT data available from a variety of commercial sources, which means that independent review of critical splice data is possible.

INTRODUCTION Spent household dry cell batteries are frequently disposed of with metropolitan wastestream (MSW) in landfills where they can leak due to handling or aging. Frequent rain and sun cycles, especially in tropical environments, coupled to the action of leachate, dissolve their metal constituents which will eventually reach rivers, lakes and underground water. It is well known that some of these metals are fundamental to sustain life and that is why living organisms concentrate them through their metabolism, but it has been also recognized that beyond specific limits they can definitely be deleterious to the environment. In other words, high concentration of heavy metals are proven to cause chronic or acute diseases and toxic reactions, by acting on mammals' kidneys, liver and nervous system. In addition, some metals frequently used in household batteries, as mercury and cadmium, are said to be carcinogenic (Landis et al. 1995, Silva et al. 1988). Occasionally, plants to treat MSW are coupled to compost production. Household batteries present in MSW can be dragged into these plants, contaminating their products and eventually reaching vegetables making them not proper to consume by people and animals. Alternatively, batteries are also conveyed to incinerators and burned, throwing into the atmosphere volatile species. These can either act as contaminants as toxic vapor species or be delivered by winds and scavenged by rains contaminating soils and water far away from their source. In conclusion, despite the treatment applied to MSW, one can say that battery residues are potentially environmentally hazardous. The careful assessment of the environmental impact caused by residues of household batteries it is not an easy task and it can be referred as a multivariable problem. First, many different household batteries are produced by industry and the potential environmental hazard associated to their disposal depends primarily on the type of battery and manufacturer's technology. Improvements in today's maintenance practices are mandatory as more complex and productive machines evolve in the mining industry. By keeping machine reliability high through improved maintenance procedures, overall mining costs can be reduced. The Bureau of Mines is investigating diagnostic maintenance systems for underground mining machinery. A hydraulic expert diagnostic system and an electric motor predictive diagnostic system have been designed and installed on a Joy 16CM continuous miner. An electrical diagnostic system has been designed and installed on a Joy 14CM continuous miner. Each system is functionally described and the relative merits of expert diagnostic systems versus algorithmic diagnostic systems are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to attest the effectiveness of conditional simulation technique's for determining the principal pre-mining control parameters during mine planning. These parameters include: determining the selective mining unit size, the optimum pre-mining grid spacing and the number of mining faces to be used. The research work was developed in an iron ore deposit located in the Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Phosphorus was considered the master control variable for the research work. This paper provides the structural analysis (variography) , a description of the steps the were taken for setting up the numerical model, the kriging studies which were applied to the numerical model and the final optimum grid spacing, block size and number of mining faces.

Man's activity in developing, operating, and abandoning a mine often affects the quality of the ground water and surface water. Acid water drainage from mines is an example of an impact from mining that results in degradation of ground and surface water. New flow systems are created by the mining activity. The mining made possible complex chemical reactions that, with water movement, create a discharge of low pH, poor quality water. Remedies for these problems fall into two general solutions: 1) treatment of the end product and 2) reversal of some aspect of man's disturbance of the natural system. The relative reversibility of various aspects of man's impact from mining activities ranges from relatively easy to very difficult, from economically feasible to economically infeasible, and from technically possible to essentially impossible with present knowledge. The relative reversibility of a mine-related problem cannot be assessed without first understanding the detailed physical interactions that combine to form the problem. Acid water drainage is a combination of the availability of several chemical factors with the availability of water for a transport mechanism.
