The construction of shafts by blind drilling has been made cost effective by advances in technology and experience. The techniques of blind shaft drilling are discussed and a brief history presented. A recent use of blind shaft drilling to access a small gold ore body in Australia is described. Finally, the most recent developments in drilling machinery are reviewed together with possible applications in new and existing mines.

Of the 28 accident/injury classifications listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, handling materials is second only to roof falls in terms of generating the highest number of reportable accidents in active underground coal mines. Two materials-handling activities that cause numerous injuries each year are the categories of ‘handling supplies or material, load and unload’ and ‘moving power cables.’ Mechanization and mine worker activity training are two methods that can aid in preventing these injuries. This paper describes three mechanical methods – the mobile manipulator, the in-mine hoist, and a cable-handling system - being developed and tested at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Two of the devices are specifically designed for loading, unloading, and moving supplies and materials, and the third device is for handling trailing cables in the confined spaces of coal mines. Also described are safety solutions developed for underground coal mines geared to showing miners safe and unsafe ways of performing various materials-handling tasks.

Introduction As ore grades decline and deposit depths increase, problems and costs of mining construction increase rapidly. Ground water greatly impacts the cost of mining construction. In developing or exploiting ore bodies or coal mines, stored ground water in waterbearing formations is often encountered. Man-made conduits or shafts are constructed, as are raise bores for ventilation (up to 6-m-diam or 20-ft-diam), or smaller diameter drill holes, used for either power cables or rock dust. In underground construction and mining, it is possible to inherit unmapped and abandoned drill holes either from oil or gas exploration, or from previous geological investigations. There also exists within underground work exposure to faults, fissures, and jointing. A mine development may encounter unknown aquifers or, unluckily, have an ore body that is an aquifer. Water may invade an existing underground structure, due to concrete deterioration or to damage that may occur to an existing shaft or tunnel concrete lining. An underground development may intersect a drill hole that was not properly grouted when abandoned. It subsequently formed a conduit or an active path to conduct water into the mine. Water inflow may range from insignificant to a magnitude sufficient to inundate an area or an entire underground development. Corrosion imposes major costs. In shafts, it can cause accelerated wear and deterioration, and subsequent early replacement of hoisting ropes. It can also cause deterioration, misalignment, and subsequent accelerated wear and replacement of timber and steel guides and buntons. Utility maintenance (power cables, air, water, and ventilation lines) also can become a problem. Corrosion imposes major costs. Skips and skiploaders provide a never-ending series of maintenance headaches when exposed to an ingress of water. Numerous problems are found in declines with invert and rail maintenance and with partitions in over-under coal mine slopes. Ground water interacting with an underground ventilation system can result in: • Increased ventilation resistance due to roof falls and the spalling of ribs caused by ice heaving. • Restriction in shaft or slope cross-sectional area due to ice buildup during winter months. This may be a safety hazard to access as well. • An increase in the moisture content entering the ventilation air that condenses underground and causes electrical and equipment maintenance problems. Underground structures also incur water-caused problems. The concrete lining in shafts, slopes, and tunnels may be subject to: • Active mine waters causing concrete and reinforcing steel to deteriorate - perhaps to the point of collapse. • Load redistribution around a concrete lining, caused by soil dislocation due to water movement. The resulting stress may be in excess of the calculated design loading. Backwall injection with grout of the completed concrete lining may solve these water inflow problems through low-pressure injections of cement and chemicals. This fills voids at the interface of the concrete lining with either the soil or rock excavation. Surface structures may be jeopardized by lowering the ground water table, resulting in surface settlements. Surface settlements can occur in buildings, headframes, hoist foundations, mills, conveyor structures, or in rail haulage. Areas of differential settlement can lead to derailments, improper wear of hoisting ropes on sheaves in headframes, and the misalignment of bearings and brakes. Mud jacking and compaction grouting may remedy these problems. To reduce operating costs, increase efficiency, and increase safety, inflow water to the mine should be minimized. For an operating mine with a water problem, a water inflow survey should be taken. Quantities of water flow should be examined at all accesses (shafts, slopes, bore holes, and raise bores) at the faces, haulages (rails or conveyors), and sump discharge. Ore was first discovered at the Kidd Creek mine site during the first few days of December 1963 when a diamond drill hole there cut sulfide mineralization. This event marked the end of the search started 11 years earlier with the conception of a geological idea. Economic forces provided the stimulus needed for the application of this idea but other-events, and legal considerations, also played arole in delaying the ultimate discovery. The location of Kidd Creek is shown in Fig. 1. Management of the then Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. had become concerned in 1951 at the company's declining reserves of native sulfur in Texas. This problem was to be alleviated by new discoveries and development of methods to recover sulfur from sour gas. At the time, however, the solution appeared to lie in the recovery of sulfur from pyritic ores. Canada was chosen as the best country in which to find these ores. Walter Holyk was hired in 1951 to conduct the search. By 1952, he was working in the area near Sherbrooke, Quebec, known as the "Eastern Townships" where mineralization consisting of base metal sulfides in volcanic rocks has long been known. His observations here led him to the then revolutionary conclusion that such mineralization could have formed as part of the volcanic process and not, as was generally supposed at the time, by replacement. On learning of the discovery of similar mineralization near Bathurst, NB, he moved there in the spring of 1953. He was able to utilize his new concept and found the Half-Mile Lake sulfide deposit.

In gassy coal mines, some methane drainage is essential for mine safety, but the ratio of total methane drained to total methane produced by the mine can vary from 10 to 70 percent. The volume of methane not captured is diluted by ventilation air and vented to the atmosphere. Since captured methane can be processed and sold, it makes sense to maximize methane drainage from coal mines. This paper describes ventilation and methane drainage schemes to achieve these goals.

Spatial auto- and crosscorrelation assessment of variables can be carried out using quadratic function estimates. From the function estimates, multivariate relationships of the variables can be determined in the form of spatial factors. The calculation of the spatial factors requires computation of the corresponding amplitude vectors from the eigenvalue solution. This vector reflects the relative amplitudes by which the variables follow the spatial factors. Instability of some of the eigenvalue solutions requires that caution be used in interpreting the resulting factor pat- terns. A measure of the predictive power of the spatial factors can be determined from the auto- correlation coefficients and squared multiple correlation co-efficients which indicate which of the variables are significant in any given factor. The use of unconditional simulations provides a basis by which geological variables of varying spatial ranges can be modelled using the spatial factor technique. Simulations were generated for a variety of ranges and variables were created that form single or multiple combinations of the spatial patterns. The success of the spatial factor technique depends on the amount of associated noise, and the size of the neighbourhood relative to the spatial range of the variable. The predictive power of the components is dependent on these two factors. Problems with collinearity of variables can result in unrealistic eigenvalues and result in the failure of the method. Application of this method to spatial data in mineral exploration can assist in outlining spatially continuous zones of alteration associated with mineralization.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. A hydrologic assessment should include an evaluation of climatic data and prediction of the net infiltration rate through the waste rock stockpile surface. In addition, hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in the stockpiles and the time required for potential seepage to migrate to the underlying aquifer should also be predicted.

Seismic repeaters are rarely observed phenomena in underground mines. However, recent studies in Garpenberg mine (Sweden) have demonstrated that seismic repeaters and multiplets may represent significant portion of the total number of microseismic events (> 80 %) related to excavation operations. Detailed seismic analysis, involving template matching, multiplet clustering, double-difference relocation, source parameter and mechanism estimation, and interevent time analysis, suggest that seismic repeaters represent brittle frictional parts (asperity) of creeping, planar shaped, pre-exiting structures of several meters length. It is furthermore suggested that seismic repeater occur preferentially in weak rock-mass materials (e.g. talc) associated with strengthening friction behaviors. These results may imply that postblast related stress redistribution may be governed by “silent” aseismic movements in preferentially weak rock mass materials, what questions the reliability and performance of seismic monitoring to survey stress evolution during excavation operations. However, once the seismic and aseismic coupling processes and the geological nature linked to repeater occurrences are better understood, their detailed monitoring bears also opportunities to survey and quantify aseismic post-blast stress transfer. Here we present ongoing investigations on repeater occurrences aiming at better understating on their geological and geomechanical origin. Furthermore, we try to develop advanced monitoring tools helping to quantify aseismic slip and to provide criteria for seismic hazard as asperity density and the related potential to generate larger dynamic rupture zones. For this respect a local monitoring network has been set up close to certain repeater target families. Furthermore, geological well log drilling throughout repeater occurrences as well as geotechnical strain measurements (e.g. extensometer, optical fiber etc.) are currently conducted to provide crucial information on the geological nature of repeater and to quantify and characterize background creep induced from excavation.

These include improvements and new development in explosives products, the application of these products to blasting technologies, and the study of the peripheral effects of the use of explosives, such as ground vibrations and airblast. Topics of special interest in the last several years include new explosives and detonators, cap timing, explosive casting, high-speed photography, perimeter and slope control, air decking and mathematical modeling of blasting processes.

With the trend in the coal mining industry pushing towards improved productivity and greater production, the number and size of longwall panels is increasing rapidly. The development and mining of large longwall panels causes unique problems in the provision of adequate ventilation at the working faces. Because of the transient nature of the longwall panel, and the difficult field conditions for ventilation measurements, detailed pressure and volume surveys are often not conducted around the longwall circuit. This is unforlunate because the highest resistance airway in longwall mines is typically the longwall tailgate, which frequently represents the only unregulated split in the ventilation network. This paper examines data collected from ventilation studies of longwall panels at nine mines. The variation in airway resistance, ventilating pressure and airflow is examined and compared with specific factors such as airway dimensions, ground conditions and support type used.

Yucca Mountain, located in Southern Nevada approximately 160 krn northwest of Las Vegas, is currently the site of intensive surfacebased and underground investigations. The investigations are required to determine if the site is suitable for long term isolation of the Nation's high level nuclear waste inventory. A major component of the program is the Exploratory Studies Facility, or ESF. The ESF, when completed, will consist of approximately 25,600 meters of tunnels and drifts. The network of tunnels and drifts (Figure 1) will house and support a wide array of testing programs conceived to provide physical information about the site. Information on geologic, geomechanical, and hydrologic data will be used in the repository design if the site is found suitable. Besides a few special requirements, the general ESF ventilation criteria during construction are similar to that of commercial tunneling and mining operations. The minimum air velocity at the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and other active mining faces is 0.51 meter per second (m/s) (100 feet per minute [fpm]). Airways, estimated leakages and ventilation controls are converted into equivalent resistances for input to mine ventilation network computer simulations. VNETPC Version 3.1 computer software is used to generate the ventilation models for optimized system design and component selection. Subsequently, actual performance of the ventilation system will be verified and validated to comply with applicable nuclear regulatory quality assurance requirements. Dust control in the ESF is dependent on effective dust collection, enclosure, and airflow dilution. Minimum use of water, as feasible, is necessary to avoid adding moisture to the potential repository horizon. The limitation of water use for test drilling and TBM operation, and the rigid compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, make the ESF a ventilation design challenge.

Shale has long been recognized for its tendency to swell when exposed to the atmosphere. Interaction of moisture with exposed shale strata can cause serious ground stabi1ity problems, since the initial strength of a shale is reduced if the material is sensitive to moisture variations. In this paper, the authors present a classification system to estimate the response of swelling generated within shales. This characterization of the swelling potential is based upon plasticity, susceptibility to moisture, mineralogical constituents of clay size particles, and fabric. Use of this classification system in conjunction with other existing rock properties tests will provide data for more rational engineering design.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate overall prospects of the export market in the Pacific Rim for Illinois steam coal in terms of recent changes in global socioeconomic factors. To pursue this objective, three factors affecting the prospects of Illinois coal in the Asian market were selected for detailed analysis: quality requirements of imported coal, particularly those of the Japanese market; import controls and regulatory factors; and transportation factors affecting the export of Illinois coal. Based on these analyses, alternative long-term strategies are suggested for promoting Illinois coal export in the Asian market.

The art of excavating tunnels with continuous, full-face boring machines began almost 90 years ago, in the early 1880's. At this time, Colonel Beaumont designed and manufactured a seven-foot diameter tunneler for boring under the English Channel, Despite the absence of modern materials and manufacturing techniques, Beaumont's tunneler, powered by compressed air piped in from the surface, was quite successful. During its short, but impressive existence, this machine set a record of advancing in chalk 50 feet per day for 53 days - which is impressive even by today's standards. Despite the apparent success of this early tunneler, almost 80 years passed before any further significant development was accomplished in this field. Demands from the construction and mining industry and society itself have motivated the development of the modern tunneling machine. Our rapidly growing civilization needs faster, less expensive and safer means of excavating tunnels. Space age technology and materials have played a major role in making hardrock tunneling machines possible.

During the induration of fluxed taconite pellets, alkali salts deposit on the grate support bars, causing severe corrosive degradation of these alloys. To determine the source of these deposits and to understand the mechanism by which the salts are conveyed to the grate bars, a study of the reactions between fluxed pellets and combustion gas was carried out. The study focused on the thermodynamics and kinetics of several processes associated with induration; namely, oxidation of magnetite, calcination of flux, and the formation and gaseous transport of various alkali salt species. Both theoretical and experimental techniques were used. It was concluded that the principal source of alkali salt deposits is alkali chlorides, which are present as contaminants in the flux and/or residue from contaminated washwater. The pathway from pellet to grate bar involves the following steps: evaporation of chloride salts within the pellet; diffusion of salt vapor out of the pellet, aided by the outflow of CO2 from calcination of the flux; convective transport by the combustion gas with concurrent (partial) conversion to alkali sulfates by reaction with residual SOX in the combustion gas; and condensation of salts on the grate bars.

A major problem in the ore extraction process is the high degree of variation in the mix of materials that make up the mined ore. The mix of materials makes it extremely difficult to characterize and predict the behavior of the ore when it is processed. The Quality Production Database (QPD) tool was successfully used in order to predict and transfer information regarding the quality characteristics of the ore being delivered to the extraction and hydrotransport unit operators. This paper describes the use of QPD in the prediction of various ore characteristics at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. processing facility.

Test of trolley-diesel prime power is another step in the search to exploit the unused potential of electric wheel driven haulage trucks. The output of the present engine - a 700 horsepower diesel - is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 horsepower potential of the two electric wheel drive motors. Power was supplied to a modified 100-ton haulage truck through a double wire trolley system. The vehicle was tested with various payloads on a 7% adverse grade haul road. More significant conclusions developed are: Power - Horsepower to propel the vehicle can he more than doubled to improve truck cycle time. Productivity - Trolley power up adverse grades can improve [producivity] rates from 18 to 36%, dependent upon haul road profile.

Introduction The history of mining machine development has been and is one of "bigger is better." While this may not always be true, it is currently the only approach open to machine designers without specific in situ cutting force information. The US Bureau of Mines has tried to modify this approach by supporting research, both in the laboratory and in field tests, that demonstrates that bigger is only better if the equipment is used correctly. In-house research has shown conclusively that deeper cutting reduces both dust and energy (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). This approach has been applied to a large Lee-Norse (LN456) continuous mining machine, which confirmed that slow deep cutting is beneficial and does not have a negative effect on production (Black and Rounds, 1977; Black et al., 1978). Specific in situ engineering data needed on coal cutting forces have not, however, been obtained by field tests with the LN456. Although the machine was instrumented to obtain data on one seam, it would be impractical to move the machine from mine to mine. It became apparent that a portable, easy to use device was needed for obtaining coal cutting forces in situ. Such a device could provide the engineering data needed by manufacturers, the site-specific cutting information needed by operators, and a field research tool to establish correlation with laboratory cutting tests. Design and Development According to a set of design guidelines established by the Bureau, the proposed device should be able to measure cutting forces directly with standard coal cutting bits, be transportable by two miners, and be self-contained. These guidelines were given to Ingersoll-Rand Research Inc. (IRRI). The contractor performed a rigorous review of 16 existing in situ portable tester designs, none of which could use a standard coal cutting bit to measure cutting force directly. These included a wide range of devices, all of which are discussed in the final report (Banerjee and Wisner, 1982). A series of design tradeoffs were established to satisfy initial design guidelines. The final deci¬sion was heavily weighted by an industry survey to determine the preferred concept from four man¬ufacturers and four operators. To assure ease of use with maximum information, all respondents wanted a linear cutting device that could work in seams down to 1 m (40 in.). The final design choice was between a linear and a rotary tester. The rotary tester would cut on an arc in the same manner as a rotary drum machine. It had several faults, however, that could not be resolved within the scope of this contract. The worst was related to arc cutting (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). Since any bit cutting on arc enters the coal at zero depth, goes to maximum depth only at the horizontal centerline, and exits at zero, maximum cutting force is obtained only at the instant the bit crosses the horizontal centerline. This centerline peak response would require that many replications be made with an arc-type cutter to get reliable force information. The arc-type tester would require extensive face preparation to establish the cutting path and extensive wasted clearing cuts to advance the device for additional layers of cuts. The linear tester could be mounted directly on any face or rib with only minor preparation. By its nature, a linear cut at a constant depth provides multiple peak force data over the length of the cut, thus reducing the required number of replications. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The design of a mine or any underground opening in rock is similar to the design of any other structure, such as a building or a bridge, in one important way. This similarity lies in the fact that the stability of the structure is a function of the loads that will be applied during the structure's expected lifetime. In the case of an underground opening, the applied load is the product of the existing in situ stress field and the concentration of this field that is produced by the extraction of a load¬bearing material. Thus, a knowledge of the in situ stress field is considered a basic requirement in the design process and essential to the eventual stability of the underground structure (Duvall, 1976; Obert, 1972; Merrill and Peterson, 1961; Dahl and von Schonfeldt, 1976; Hedley and Wilson, 1975). The in situ stress field can be used along with the physical properties of the rock masses involved, the ge¬ometry of the various rock types, the geometry of the openings involved, and a failure criterion to evaluate structural stability of a planned mine by theoretical or numerical techniques. This same information can be used to investigate ground control problems in existing mines. In situ rock stress determinations can be separated into three categories: the determination of applied stress, also called the absolute or field stress; the deter¬mination of concentrations of the field stress near open¬ ings; and the determination of changes in rock stress as load-bearing material is removed. The applied stress field is more difficult to determine than are stress changes. Various instruments and techniques have been developed to determine applied rock stress and stress changes in rock. ABSOLUTE OR FIELD STRESSES Theoretical Considerations In the absence of actual measurements, it is often assumed that at any point, the vertical stress is equal to the weight of the overlying material. [ ] where S„ is vertical stress, S is average weight density of overburden rock, and h is depth from the surface. This is normally consistent with actual experience. The horizontal stresses are assumed to be equal and related to the vertical stress through the Poisson effect. [] where Sh is horizontal stress, S„ is vertical stress, and v is Poisson's ratio. The derivation of Eq. 2 is dependent on lateral con¬finement of the rock mass. An increasing amount of information is rapidly becoming available which indi¬cates that the in situ stress field at a particular location cannot simply be assumed to be a gravity-induced stress distribution in which the secondary principal stresses in the horizontal plane are due to confinement and Pois¬son's effect. Rather they can be a complex function of gravity loading, regional stresses, structural features, ex¬cavation geometries, and variations in surface and/or possibly basement rock topography. Furthermore, the underground principal stress dis¬tribution is not necessarily vertical and horizontal as is often assumed. The deviation of the three-dimensional stress distribution from vertical and horizontal can be due to a combination of both topographic (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972) and structural features.
