Selective flocculation was used to produce a superclean zinc concentrate by minimizing silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, TN. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but never to zinc processing. The feed material assayed 0.45% SiO2. The use of 0.56 kg/ t (1.13 lb/st) sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/t (0.141 lb/st) causticized tapioca starch resulted in a 98.2% zinc recovery and produced a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is currently 0.30% Si02. This work demonstrated that selective flocculation is a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

A laboratory study of the jigging process with Pittsburgh seam coal has been conducted. The laboratory-scale Baum jig used in this study was a McNally-Norton LO30X Right Hand Model Baum jig with an effective screen area of 0.186 m2 Feed material was prepared by selecting a size range from 6 mesh to 1.91 cm. Solid feed rates were 27.2 kg/min and 32.7 kg/min. Water flow rates were varied from 37.9 to 94.6 L/min. It has been found that smaller particles give higher values of density of separation and lower efficiency of separation. Increasing water flow rate increases the discharge rate of clean coal at a constant solid feed rate. It appears that the efficiency of separation increases by increasing water flow rate up to a certain value, and then levels off upon increasing the flow rate further.

This paper describes a practical methodology, based on numerical modeling, for the prediction of progressive failure of underground-mine stopes having cable-bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 scope at the Kidd Creek mine, Timmins, Ontario, Canada is presented. Scope 40-761 was mined by blast hole open sloping in 1986 and was a lead scope within a mining block located between levels 36-1 and 38-2. Initially designed to peak at level 38-2, the scope back caved upwards =40 m towards level 36-1. After caving began, cable bolts were installed above the stope from level 36-1. The stope eventually stopped caving when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. This paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modeling results of the case study. Numerical modeling of cable bolts around the mine stoke was carried out using a finite-element modeling software. The software, known as e-z tools, was developed by the first author.

The volume of gases produced in major and trace amounts as a result of detonation of explosives in an underground mine was determined. The volumes of major gases (CO, CO2, NO and N02) were measured immediately following detonation, during the mucking operation, and following the removal of muck. Tests to identify and quantify the gases produced in trace amounts were performed following the detonation only. The composition of the gases produced varied significantly depending on the composition of the explosive/blasting agent. An average of 95% of the gases produced were found in the test chamber immediately following the detonation, while 2% was found in the chamber following the removal of the muck. Several compounds were identified in trace amounts. Of particular interest was the detection of benzene, toluene, butenes, ethyl benzene and naphthalene since exposure to some of these compounds, even in trace amounts, could present a serious health hazard.

Fractal theory was horn in the mid-1970s. Since then, its application has been spreading day by day, from mathematics and geology to areas such as geophysics, physics and material sciences. In this paper, fractal models are developed to characterize particle size distribution and surface area. Theoretical formulas are derived for the computation of fractal dimensions D (size) and D[s] (surface area). The models developed are applied using experimental data of particle size distribution and surface area obtained from the Microtrac Particle Size Analyzer for dust processed by several size reduction devices. The theoretical models and the experimental data are found in good agreement. The fractal dimensions obtained are D = 1.350 to 1.770 and D[s] = 2.058 to 2.584 for fine coal dust particles (< 15 µm) produced by various size reduction mechanisms. The physical meaning of these fractal dimensions is also related to the dust generation processes.

Regular entry trusses are used in headgates, tailgates, roadways and intensely-faulted areas. These trusses have proven to give the required support and maintain roof stability even under major abutment loading conditions for both the re-treating and advancing longwalls. Areas previously requiring steel arches have been eliminated. A special Continuous Entry Truss? provides permanent support to adjacent tunnel/crosscut zone for more than 300 feet in each tunnel. The continuous nature of the tensioned truss allows sup-port forces to be placed on the roof in not just the two-dimensions of regular trusses, but in a full three-dimensions. A newly developed Roktruss? provides support in an arched 30-foot high rock zone. The Roktruss? allows truss support concepts to be used in an opening with a curved roof.

By evaluating underground haulage, a significant component of the Room and Pillar mining value stream, variables have been identified and sensitivities have been performed to show opportunities to balance and streamline throughput. As a result of applying operational excellence tools to the mining environment, Joy Global is seeking to optimize mining performances by limiting waste, simplifying the process, increasing productivity and machine utilization, as well as removing workers from harm’s way. These days it’s not enough to work harder; mines have to work smarter. Improving efficiency, reducing costs, increasing safety: these are no longer ‘nice to haves’, they are ‘must haves’. Starting with the best products and the right people is a first step, but then what? How do mines take their operations from just OK to being a top performer? By using operational excellence principles aimed at eliminating waste, simplifying processes, automating where possible and removing people from harm’s way. The fundamentals of operational excellence (OpEx) are based upon the DMAIC process, which stands for define, measure, analyze, improve and control. DMAIC is an improvement cycle that helps with, for example, haulage optimization by: defining the issues and problems in the process as well as the areas of improvement; measuring and collecting mining operational data by time study and equipment monitoring system; analyzing through sensitivities and production modelling to determine root causes; then improving the performance and controlling the operation. Joy Global uses Joy OpEx or ‘lean’ principles inside its organization to drive efficiency, but it also helps its customers employ them to achieve new levels of productivity and safety. These same principles can be applied in most situations to streamline processes, improve operations and deliver value. As applied to mining, OpEx is seen as moving the needle on value creation by first identifying the value stream, then analyzing the areas that are not optimized. Once defined, these areas are ‘designed out’ of operational processes to create an automated operational flow. At a US coal mine, Joy Global was brought in to apply Joy OpEx principles to optimize mining and haulage to improve productivity and reduce costs. The concept of global-market access through transportation efficiency is a concept whose time has come. The basis of this approach is customer satisfaction—the higher the better. But beyond what seems almost too logical is the question of how to achieve this market access. All industrial mineral exporters face stiff competition. Factors include proximity of competitive industrial minerals and substitutes, pricing pressure, political and cultural differences, currency fluctuations, communication problems, trade finance restrictions, and transportation imbalances. The following discussion will focus on transportation activities in global competitiveness, but the producer with the larger offering of services will often make the sale, not necessarily the low-cost producer (Cook, 2002). Some key concepts for global-market access are “the market concept,” just-in-time delivery, quality retention, and global customer service.

Gold surveys were sent to 21 gold operations around the world. Eleven different surveys were sent, each targeting a dif­ferent unit operation used commonly in gold processing. On a monthly basis the individual reports were returned to the opera­tions. Empirical data collected during the surveys has con­tributed to more effective engineering design. Graphical rela­tionships established have been used by the operations to "benchmark" performance against the industry and identify areas of possible improvement. This paper presents some of the findings related to the fol­lowing four surveys that investigated parameters specifically relating to carbon processing. A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

The Bureau of Mines has developed two expert systems to give advice on coal mine dust control, one for continuous miner sections, and another for longwalls. Prototype versions have been evaluated by coal operators and MSHA. Both systems query the user as to the nature and extent of the dust control problem. Typical questions asked deal with matters such as cutting sequence, current dust standards and characteristics of current dust control techniques. Advice given by the system generally does not focus on a single issue, but may suggest a variety of approaches consistent with the ability of the operator to practically implement what is suggested. Both were written using expert system development software called Insight 2+. The advantages of Insight 2+ for the user are: low cost, IBM-PC compatibility, and the fact that little prior experience with computers is required. For the developer, Insight offers an easy to use production rule language and goal driven structure as well as a wide variety of capabilities.

Currently, around 100 million tons of construction materials and aggregates are shipped annually by rail. And recently, producers are looking much more carefully at rail not only to reduce fixed costs through increased volume, but also to eliminate operating headaches, such as increasing community pressures about trucks on the road, noise and dust. Many producers are uncertain as to how to enter the rail shipping business since railroads have historically been reluctant to ship small quantities short distances. This article provides strategies to help producers examine and pursue moving their rock by rail.

The development of a process for direct synthesis of very pure ZnO powders from zinc-bearing waste was investigated. The zinc waste which contains 55% zinc was leached with sulfuric acid. After iron removal by hydrolysis from this zinc solution, purification through solvent extraction by the use of D2EHPA as an extractant was carried out. Then, loaded zinc in the organic solution was stripped and precipitated simultaneously using oxalic acid as a precipitant. Synthesized ZnC2O4 precursors by precipitation stripping were calcined to obtain ZnO powders exceeding 99.9% purity. The effects of sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time, and pulp density on the extraction of zinc were studied and optimum conditions for the solvent extraction were obtained through purification of the zinc solution. The size, morphology, and size distribution of synthesized ZnC204 powders were studied in terms of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, surfactant added, precipitation time, etc.

Chemical-constituent loads were determined for an alpine stream in southwestern Colorado that is affected by natural acid drainage from weathering of hydrothermally-altered rock and from acidic metal-rich discharge from abandoned mines. Base-flow loads were compared to storm-related loads using a tracer-dilution approach. A rainstom occurred during the tracer injection, providing the opportunity to measure metal loads before, during, and after storm runoff. Chemical-constituent loads during the storm increased by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude relative to base-flow conditions. The increase in loads was related to two distinct periods; (1) a flush of higher concentrations that occurred soon after rainfall began, and (2) the peak of storm runoff. The initial flush-having no measurable change in discharge--contained the highest loads of trace metals and dissolved iron. The chemical character of peak runoff was distinctly different, as evidenced by the highest loads of total and dissolved major elements and total iron.

The SIMAN (SIMulation ANalysis) computer language is a general-purpose, discrete-continuous simulation language for modeling a variety of multi-component systems. The language has been described by its author in a textbook (Pegden, 1985) and in a paper (Pegden, 1986) and is available in a mainframe version, a minicomputer version and a microcomputer version. The language was designed for and has been extensively used for modeling manufacturing systems but possesses many features that are advantageous in the modeling of mining materials handling systems. Consequently, the authors have applied the language to the simulation of an open pit shovel/truck operation to test its usefulness for simulating mine materials handling systems. This paper presents a short background on simulation languages, the capabilities and modeling framework of the SIMAN language, a description of the application of SIMAN to a shovel-track operation and some results and conclusions on the use of the language for mining materials handling systems.

We have heard a lot during the recession about the mining industry now competing in a world market for sales of such commodities as copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and phosphate. If the US mining industry is to survive, do we not have to reduce direct operating costs to a minimum? How significant is labor cost compared to consumables, electricity, fuel, maintenance, materials, and transportation? Ore grade is ultimately the dominant factor; but can we offset its dominance by improving productivity? Is the US mining industry perhaps only 25-30% as productive as it might be? What prevents the industry from being more productive? Can we retrofit older plants to be more productive or does it take a new plant with the largest equipment available for each unit operation? Present Productivity A copper industry study a few years ago covering 13 US copper concentrators ranging from about 10-45 kt/d (11,000-50,000 stpd) showed that productivity did not vary with capacity above 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). Operating productivity varied significantly, however, from about 180-635 t/d (200-700 stpd) per operating hourly worker in most units, but one operation had 900 kt/d (1,000 stpd). Concentrators with more than 545 t/d (600 stpd) per hourly worker were in the 23 kt/d (25,000 stpd) or more category. Maintenance productivity covered about the same range, but most concentrators were in the 270¬635 t/d (300-700 stpd) per hourly maintenance worker. Again, one company stood well above others by exceeding 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd). Total hourly productivity ranged from 125-280 t/d (140-310 stpd) per hourly worker for most concentrators. The company with the most productive operation, however, was above 455 t/d (500 stpd). Salaried worker productivity for most operations was in the 725 t/d to 1.2 kt/d (800-1,300 stpd) per salaried worker range. The best operation was 2.2 kt/d (2,400 stpd). The end result is, of course, tons per day per total personnel. Most operations fell in the 110-220 t/d (120-240 stpd) range with the best operation at 400 t/d (440 stpd). This is the productivity definition that is most directly related to unit costs. Many of these operations have made some productivity progress

With the passing of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, many utilities are opting to switch to lower sulfur coal to meet new SO2 emissions requirements. This lower sulfur coal may be from new suppliers or it may be from current suppliers that modify existing cleaning plants or build new plants to produce this higher quality coal. New, sophisticated coal cleaning simulators are useful tools for optimizing cod cleaning circuit operating parameters to maximize the production of clean coal that meets more stringent specifications for SO2 emissions potential. The examples in this paper were developed using the Coal Cleaning Simulator (CCS), running under ASPEN PLUS™, that was developed under a Department of Energy project cosponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute. With advanced sensitivity analysis and optimization features, CCS allows a quick, efficient, cost-effective review of coal cleaning plant performance to meet current production goals and to plan future changes in plant operating parameters or circuitry configurations.

In order to continue improving the quality of telecommunication services to meet the expectations of the people and to increase reliability in the case of emergency such as disasters, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) is now constructing cable tunnels which connect main urban telephone offices. However, almost all the large cities in Japan are built in river deltas, so that their chief underground features are low strength fluvial deposit and a high ground water level. In this saturated soft ground, the ground surface at an installation site has occasionally subsided through deep excavations for cable tunneling construction. As these settlements have sometimes caused accidents, especially in densely populated large cities, NTT has made much effort to avoid such accidents. These accidents have occured mainly in flexible sheeting due to its inward movement. Therefore, after the investigation into forecast method of sheeting deflection with accuracy, NTT has reserched a system which forecasts ground surface settlements. This paper describes an outline of the ground settlement forecast system and practical example on the site.

INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software.
