Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are. the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread- sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin.

A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the application of fiber optic technology to methane and carbon monoxide monitoring. A methane monitoring system is described that is based on differential absorption of infrared light. It can detect concentrations as low as 0.2% and as far away as 2 km via fiber optic cable. The upper range is 100% methane. The system requires no electrical power within the mine so it should operate safely under mine disaster conditions. A hybrid carbon monoxide monitoring system is described that combines a low-powered electrochemical cell with fiber optic telemetry. Testing has shown the system can operate maintenance- free for several months.

Capital resource budgeting is the means by which managers of publicly held companies fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to maximize the wealth of stockholders. Managers maximize shareholder wealth by allocating investment capital to the most productive of competing alternative projects in a manner that maximizes the net present value of the firm's future cash flow. The techniques of cash flow analysis are the primary tools available for selecting a corporate portfolio of projects that meets or exceeds the rate of return expected by shareholders. The reliability of cash flow analysis hinges on the ability of managers to forecast the future values of individual components. The accuracy and reliability of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm. The present paper will explore tools for forecasting the spot market price of a commodity, silver, to demonstrate the difficulty and uncertainty involved in forecasting the future. The commodity price is only one of a number of components of the cash flow equation. Each component has a unique and uncertain future and must be individually analyzed and forecast to arrive at a robust cash flow model.

The extended weakness of dollar-denominated commodity prices during the past four years has often been attributed to, among other factors, the strong rise in the value of the dollar, and many U. S. producers have hoped for a recovery in metals and minerals prices once the dollar weakened in foreign exchange markets. The recent turnaround in dollar strength may put this view to the test quite soon. Hence a review of the role of exchange rate changes in the determination of the prices of world-traded metals and minerals may be timely. This paper has three parts. Part I reviews the recent summary record of price movements in commodity and foreign exchange markets. Part 11 reviews the distinct ways in which exchange rate changes influence the supply and demand sides of a representative commodity market. Part III then more closely examines copper and aluminum prices to highlight the potential differences in the effects of exchange rate changes for commodities whose production is dominated by geology and commodities which are processing-dominated. The paper also contemplates the likely implications of these differences for commodity prices in the case of a decline in the trade-weighted dollar. The evidence suggests that the degree of recovery for dollar- measured commodity prices may be very different for differing goods. And it may be the case that some commodities whose prices appear to have been most affected by exchange rate influences may show the least recovery in response to a fall in the trade- weighted dollar.

Utilization of Bucket Wheel Excavators and Overland Conveyor Systems to remove overburden provides increased productivity and flexibility to a surface mining operation. The utilization of such a system at the Texasgulf Inc. Aurora, North Carolina Mine has significantly improved the overall productivity of the mining operation. System flexibility is evidenced by adaptation to operation requirements such as mining area moves, movement of excavated overburden to designated sites, selective handling of overburden, spoil placement contouring, and providing an environmentally sound and safe operation. System productivity is evidenced by actual case studies relating to overall production, excavation rates, and cost effectiveness.

The new Niagara Falls Intake Tunnel, mined in the highly fractured Lockport Dolomite, encountered prolific inflows of water contained in rock seams directly linked to the Niagara River. These inflows were pressurized and, more significantly, contained high concentrations of dissolved H2S gas. The contractors attempts to control the water/gas inflows included cement and chemical grouting from inside the tunnel. Ultimately, improving the rate of air exchange in the tunnel by increasing the fan capacity, in conjunction with a pattern down-hole pre-grouting program along the tunnel alignment allowed the contractor to control the concentration of H2S gas and complete the tunnel.

INTRODUCTION The literature on project management considerations and techniques for large rail rapid transit projects in mid-1979 was fairly large and getting larger. UMTA was establishing special organizational elements to deal with the subject as it related to those properties requesting capital assistance, and comprehensive project management plans were being requested from those properties as an early step to build confidence in UMTA that the particular project could be planned, designed, and executed efficiently and effectively, thereby using critically short capital assistance funds to best advantage. In the late 60's and early 70's, the choices of models for heavy rail construction would have been quite limited.., and perhaps much simpler than was the case in 1979. One of the writers was with an agency in 1979 in the process of finalizing its organization for project implementation after several years of study and had the opportunity to review the experiences of others at length, presumably to build on the success and to try to avoid the pitfalls and failures. The properties that were surveyed all reported more or less success stories. One could only conclude that there are many ways to organize for a major transit (construction) project and that there is a great variety of viable management structures, but it seemed that chances for success were best where the executing property had prepared a comprehensive project management plan, then resolved to follow it. Perhaps more important, a commitment or prior approval had been sought from UMTA as to the validity of the project management plan, and the property was allowed to proceed without detailed prior UMTA review or approval of all specific intermediate steps. Most important, however, an early overall UMTA funding commitment had been obtained that permitted some reasonable expectation of the rate of funding, perhaps by commitment

Eighteen papers were presented, grouped into four sessions: Low Tension Drives, High Tension Drives. Novel Techniques and Specifications. Three of the papers have been republished in this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Brief summaries of the other 15 papers are presented here. Existing classifications of mining and construction equipment have had major deficiencies. They often lack organization, balance, and have remained obscure. Particularly when proceeding to great.er resolution these deficiencies have proven crippling. By adopting "Classes", "Groups" f "Types" and "Kinds" at successive degrees of refinement, a "Taxonomy" is developed based on clear visual differentiation or on a "Morphology??. This symbiotic application, adopted from the Biological Sciences, yields clear, simple and unambiguous results. Supporting this effort are guidelines for easily and credibly sketching equipment which are also distinctive. Numerous illustrative examples are provided. Communications are improved and the engineer obtains a confident feel for the equipment at hand.

The adsorption of copper and lead und their subsequent xanthate uptake were compared at pH 3.0, 6.0 and 9.2 on both fresh and oxidized sphalerite. The extent of adsorption and the rate of adsorption were strongly dependent on pH, with the highest adsorption of Cu and Pb being at pH 9.2. In the presence of both Cu and Pb, Cu adsorption was enhanced and Pb adsorption was suppressed. The adsorption kinetics of Cu and Pb were characterized by two- and three-stage adsorption processes, respectively. The exchange ratio of Cu to Zn was about one and that of Ph to Zn was greater than one and varied with pH. The uptake of xarlthate on "activated" sphalerite was dependent on pH. The rnaximum uptake was found to be at pH 6.0 for Cu-activated sphalerite artd at pH 9.2 for Pb-activated sphalerite. A measure of "activation strength" based on inetal ion adsorption and xanthate uptake was introduced. The activation strength of Cu to Pb was about one at acidic pH, but it was higher at neutral (pH -6) and alkaline (pH -3) conditions. The oxidation of sphalerite decreased Pb and, especially, Cu adsorption and decreased xanthate uptake.

On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. INTRODUCTION To be effective and useful, monitoring of tunnel construction must be carefully planned throughout all steps. A vital and frequently overlooked step is a clear definition of the specific purposes of the instrumentation. Most tunnel construction monitoring has in the past been of benefit to research, the advancement of tunneling practice, wittingly or not. The development of monitoring instrumentation for the benefit of the project from which the data are recovered has very significant potential for risk and cost reduction of soft ground tunneling. A systematic approach to tunnel construction monitoring, from conception to full implementation, includes at least the following nine tasks or steps: Definition of benefits and purposes; design and project specification to draw full benefits; selection of monitoring parameters; selection of instruments and writing of specifications for procurement and installation; procurement and installation; reading and maintenance; data storage and retrieval; interpretation; implementation. Some of these steps are fairly easy and resolved through the use of established theories and technologies. The difficult ones are those that require the bending of minds, those that involve changes in the ways engineers design soft ground tunnels, the way owners pay for tunnels, and the construction is managed, inspected and controlled. This is a detailed report of construction experience of a tunnel built by a shield of rectangular cross section with reinforced concrete segments. In case of tunneling by a rectangular shield, there were the following problems to be overcom by technical developments; (1) structural joints between segments, (2) complexity in erector handling, (3) exact steering operation of shield and perfect filling of tail void left around the lining erected. Such rectangular shape of cross section has various advantages comparing the conventional circular shape as follows; (1) effective utilization of excavated space, (2) greater overburden depth, (3) stability of lining against unbalanced earth pressure caused by neighbouring construction.

INTRODUCTION Hydraulic sand fills have been extensively used in the United States in deep metal mines since 1940, and hydraulic fills have been placed in coal mines in Europe for many years. Numerous surface hydraulic fills exist in Appalachia for the disposal of coal mine waste and throughout the United States for the disposal of other mining, manufacturing, city, and paper company wastes. Hydraulic fills, as they are now deposited in stopes in mines, are often deposited at near minimum density and hence provide very little support to stope walls and pillars. If the support strength of fills could be increased, perhaps ground conditions in deep mines could be improved making them safer and more efficient. Surface fills deposited at higher densities could be covered with top soil upon which grass could be planted. The purpose of this paper is to describe procedures where the support strength of hydraulic fills can be considerably increased, and the focus of the paper is on applications to deep mines. In deep mines the objective of increased fill strength is to reduce heavy ground problems, improve destressing techniques, reduce or eliminate rock burst incidences, provide better working conditions, provide wall support so that more or all ore pillars can be removed, and improve mine safety, efficiency, and reduce surface environmental problems. The authors have shown that it is possible to improve fill strength used in deep mines. Due to pricing volatility and lack of availability of metals, the use of non-metallic materials of construction in metal extraction and refining processes has increased significantly in recent years Even though costs and availability of metals has improved recently, these factors are not expected to continue into the future as metal supplies once again fall short of global demand. One of the most common non-metallic materials of construction used in metal extraction and refining processes today is Fiberglass- Reinforced Plastic (FRP). These processes often require materials of construction that can resist acids and high concentrations of acid chloride salts. As shown in Table 1, FRP based on epoxy vinyl ester resin has the same chemical resistance to acid and better resistance to acid chloride salts than alloy C-276 and is superior to 2205 stainless steel in both cases.

Tunnels are defined as underground passages made without removing the overlying materials. From time immemorial men have driven tunnels for mining purposes. Even today tunnels are the building blocks for underground mines. The total length of such a network of tunnels in a mine may add up to 10-100 miles! In addition to this, rapid development of vehicular traffic, needs for air raid protection and metropolitan traffic problems have given a great impetus to underground tunnel construction. But for the successful drivage of any tunnel an adequate air environment has always been and remains an essential prerequisite. This is particularly true for tunnels in mines which are driven in gas bearing strata often at a substantial depth from the surface. An adequate air environment is designed to promote the health, safety and comfort of workers which results in greater productivity and efficiency. Its legal definition varies from country to country but, in general, it means the provision of sufficient circulating air, often at specified velocities, to maintain: (i) at least 19% oxygen in the working areas (ii) Concentration of pollutants, e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, respirable dust, etc. below specified limits. Table 1 shows the maximum allowable concentrations for some of these pollutants.1 (iii) Temperature and relative humidity below specified limits. Ventilation of tunnels in mines assumes ever. greater importance today because of increased mechanization and concentration of output which leads to higher rate of production of inflammable gases and respirable dust. "In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."
