The modelling work presented here concerns Ni-bearing steels produced by Imphy Ugine Précision. In such grades, the contents of elements such as silicon or titanium must be precisely controlled by slag/metal treatments. The slag phase is described by IRSID slag model that has been slightly revised in order to better fit recent SiO2activity measurements in the low SiO2content domain of the CaO-Al2O3-CaO system. The metallic alloys are described by the unified interaction parameter model (UIPM). "Contrary to the way it is often portrayed, the average organization or company is far from being a cold, calculating machine. It is actually a highly emotive place where interaction with people is a fundamental part of its ability to perform satisfactorily.The company, through its employers, expects employees, including new graduates, to have the ability to cope adequately with this emotive environment. The graduate is frequently unable to meet this expectation because he/she has not been developed to do so. Technical knowledge is his only asset. This deficiency manifests itself in leadership shortcomings, both intrapersonal and interpersonal. Further analysis reveals a deficiency in three elements of leadership - self-awareness, oral communication, and an ability to work cooperatively in teams.To address these three elements of leadership, Sasol Coal, a subsidiary of the big petrochemical company in South Africa, sponsored a leadership programme at the University of Pretoria for their final-year bursary students in the faculty of Engineering. This programme, the Sasol Engineering and Leadership Academy (SELA), consisted of a number of interventions designed to address the three areas of self-awareness, oral communication, and cooperative behaviour in teams. These interventions varied from an intrapersonal nature to interpersonal aspects. Psychometric assessments were followed by experiential modules dealing with the three constructs.SELA was evaluated at the end of the year. The results showed a positive shift in the main constructs of self-awareness, communications, and cooperation. This was measured quantitatively and qualitatively. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for improving the programme were proposed."

The pipeline transport of paste, backfill or thickened tailings slurries is an important component of the tailings disposal process in many mines around the world. These mixtures contain significant fractions of fine (clay) and coarse (sand) particles, causing them to exhibit non-Newtonian flow behaviour and high frictional pressure gradients. There is often economic incentive to operate these pipelines in the laminar flow regime. Irrefutable evidence has shown that coarse particle settling can occur during the laminar flow of these slurries even when static settling tests show no indication of such behaviour. Previously, a ?rule-of-thumb? minimum frictional pressure gradient of ~1.5 to 2 kPa/m was suggested to ensure effective sand transport, based on the results of tests conducted using viscous Newtonian oils. In this paper, we examine the results of laminar flow tests of non-Newtonian, coarse-particle laden slurries conducted with pipeline loops of 50, 100, 150 and 250 mm in diameter. The results indicate that the ratio of the mean wall shear stress to the mean surficial particle stress is a better indicator of laminar flow settling tendency than frictional pressure gradient.

They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. The influence of local geology and rock mass characteristics on deformations during a rockburst caused by a controlled blast was studied. This was done by means of visual examination, mapping and photography both before and after the blast. We found that the ejected material was bounded mostly by fractures associated with the bow-wave fracturing and bedding surfaces and that existed prior to the blast. Most of the damage was caused by shake-out. This information is important input for the design of rockburst resistant support systems under conditions of moderate stress.

The paper proposes two numerical models ot the mechanical behaviour of chalk. First, an elasto-plastic constitutive law reproduces the different plastic mechanisms of the chalk and the influence of pore fluids by introducing the concept of suction. Secondly, a model able to reproduce time dependence behaviour. Eventually, the paper gives a simulation of an academic reservoir during depletion and waterflooding phase. Der Artikel stellt zwei numerische Modelle des mechanischen Verhaltens der Kreide vor. Das erste ist ein elasto-plastisches Modell, das verschiedene plastische Mechanismen der Kreide und den Einfluss von Porenflüssigkeit, unter dem Begriff der Suktion, reproduziert. Das zweite Modell berücksichtigt darüberhinaus das zeitabhängige Verhalten. Schliesslich zeigt die Veröffentlichung eine Simulation einer theoretischen Lagerstätte während der Entleerung und der Wasserinjektion. L'article propose deux modèles numériques du comportement mécanique de la craie. Le premier est une loi élasto-plastique qui reproduit les différents mécanismes plastiques de la craie et l'influence du fluide interstitiel par l'introduction de la notion de succion. Comparison of various technologies for uranium recovery from sulphuric acid leach solutions shows that Resin-in-Pulp (RIP) and/or Solvent extraction (SX) based processing routes are usually cost effective (11). A combined RIP-SX recovery-purification route and a CCD-SX recovery-purification route were investigated and optimised. The design basis used for the investigation was a production rate of 200 kg/h U3O8 over a solution concentration range of 40 to 1500 mg/L U3O8. The OPEX for the RIP-SX processing route was found to be sensitive to the variation in uranium concentration in the leach liquor. One of the main drivers for this trend is the leach acid concentration. Conversely, the CAPEX of the CCD-SX processing route was sensitive to the uranium concentration in the leach liquor. The leach acid concentration only affected the OPEX of the CCD-SX processing route modestly, as the bulk of the acid is recovered in a pre-leach circuit. Contrary to expectation, the effect of extractant loss assumptions on the overall processing route economics was found to be modest to insignificant. It should be noted that the CCD-SX processing route OPEX was more sensitive to extractant loss assumptions than the RIP-SX processing route OPEX. Economic optimum wash ratios were determined for the CCD-SX processing route and increased with leach concentration ? the increase in wash ratio was less than proportional. A 5-stage CCD configuration was found optimal over the concentration range investigated.

The unpaved road network on a surface mine is extensive, comprising numerous roads of varying construction and material qualities with highly variable traffic volumes. Existing haul road maintenance management systems (MMS) work well for predictable traffic volumes, but for complex mine road networks, the MMS becomes onerous. This results in sub-optimal road maintenance strategies with the attendant increase in total road-user costs and reduction in service. A real-time maintenance management system was thus sought to overcome the deficiencies of existing MMS for mine roads. Since most large mines operate trucks with on-board diagnostic data collation, linked through a centralized communication and GPS backbone, it was proposed that road condition could be monitored on a real-time basis through on-board vibration signature analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development of a real-time mine haul road maintenance management system. Following are view of mine road maintenance practices, the real-time system architecture is introduced and the results of a field trial of on-board vibration signature assessment is presented. The trial results are discussed in the light of road defect signature recognition, analysis, signature repeatability and system limitations. This approach has applicability to other situations such as a network of district roads, subject to an analysis of the economic feasibility. The paper concludes that modern technology has the potential to apply maintenance as and where needed with possible reductions in authority cost and an improvement in service provided for the road user.

The name FISH (Fully Integrated Sort House) refers to a class of technology deployed at Jwaneng Mine final diamond recovery. The FISH concept is based on three pillars, namely: ?Improved sorting efficiency FISH is based on laser technology, which is more efficient than hand sorting for certain product categories. Laser sorting is based on measuring in-elastically scattered light from molecules and this is referred to as Raman spectroscopy. The Raman scattered light occurs at wavelengths that are shifted from the incident light by the energies of molecular vibrations ?Availability of production information Roller gap diamond size distribution information is generated on line for upstream process optimization ?Improved product security A ?hands-off? philosophy reduces security risk during operation and maintenance of the plant. In addition, a number of lessons were learnt about the application of new technologies in the industry: ?The required human competency profile demanded by new technology should match the available competencies of the operational staff ?An integrated information management system should be fully functional for both production management and diamond control purposes ?Operational feedback must be correctly evaluated to identify design, maintenance, training and operational issues so as to accelerate the maturity of the new technology within the time span of the sustainable operations project ?Project execution and technology maturity risks have to be evaluated and married to ensure risk mitigation by means of suitable project resource and contracting model selection.

The oxidation state dependence of the electrical conductivity of a calcium ferrite slag with 25 wt% CaO was measured at 1300°C using a shallow slag layer and two-electrode technique. The experiments were started in air and the slag was sequentially reduced by means of a controlled gas atmosphere using CO2and CO. The electrical conductivity in air was approximately 300 S/m and increased with reduction to approximately 1900 S/m at a pO2of 10-10atm. The interest in the oxidation state dependence of the conductivity of calcium ferrite slags was to provide a comparison with the conductivity of iron silicate slags and to establish the effect of slag basicity on the electrical conductivity and its oxidation state dependence. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the slag structural information available in the literature. The co-ordination of the ferric ions appears to play a large role in determining the electrical conductivity. Keywords: calcium ferrite, slags, electrical conductivity.

This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

Having agreed to perform this task, I naturally started to wonder what on earth I was going to talk about, and on reviewing the literature I was surprised at how little I knew and how much I?d forgotten about the origins of this industry. For example: ?I?d forgotten that the Chinese invented black powder at least 1 000 years ago, back in the 10th century (although some say this invention occurred 2 000years ago). ?I didn?t know that Roger Bacon was the first person in the Western World to give exact directions for the making of gunpowder in 1242 and to understand its potential. Pepper?s Playbook of Metals quotes:?...above all, he is named as the discoverer of gun-powder, a material which has brought more wonderful changes in the great family of man than the most potent elixir that could have been devised to prolong life?.

The method used to salvage South Deep?s Main Shaft after it was flooded by an inrush of water at about 450 m below collar on 1 May1996 is described. The individual techniques employed in the salvage were all proven technology, but the combination in which they were applied is considered to be novel. The operation involved the following activities in order of occurrence. ?the dewatering of the shaft with submersible pumps ?the placement of a French drain on the shaft bottom muck pile ?the positioning of large diameter heavy walled draft tubes, and smaller tightening up, grout intrusion and reverse flow pipes ?the casting and curing of a structural concrete plug; the capping of the draft tubes; the intrusion of several thousand tons of cement grout into the aquifer by pressure induced reverse flow ?the sealing of the aquifer ?extensive probe drilling and sealing of the zone around the inrush point with cement and other specialized grouts ?the mining out of the plug and the re-establishment of normal sinking routines.

SYNOPSIS An analysis was made of records of accidents involving Bantu mineworkers and which resulted in either minor injuries or hospitalizations to determine patterns in underground accidents from which to formulate priorities in accident prevention in gold mines. The results showed that: (i) specific labour categories, such as inexperienced men, are exposed to certain types of hazards the extent of which warrant the separate design of safety programmes to meet their specific needs; (ii) the systematic study of minor accidents provides a dependable source of. information of which safety departments could make greater use in their efforts to control and prevent mining accidents.

Sedimentary and igneous rocks are the two primary sources of phosphate that are mined and beneficiated to fertilizer. During the beneficiation process, phosphate is lost into the tailings. We investigated phosphate concentrations in tailings dumps at Minjingu mine, Tanzania using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to quantify the chemical compositions. The phosphate content in the tailings varied from 12.91% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) in Tailings 2 to 19.61% in Tailings Dump 1. The naturally occurring phosphate concentration in rocks ranges from 3% to 35%, and phosphate tailings from various locations with P2O5 concentrations as low as 6.46-12.65% have been beneficiated to commercial fertilizer. Our investigation revealed that phosphate concentrations in Minjingu tailings may be sufficient to be recovered for commercial applications. Suitable recovery methods are discussed, and we recommend that beneficiation should be performed to minimize the loss of phosphate into tailings. Further research is needed to identify the optimal beneficiation methodology.

In this study, the reduction behaviours of MnO and SiO2containing slags by solid carbonaceous materials was investigated in both small and larger-scale laboratory experiments. Five types of carbonaceous material were investigated: 2 graphites, industrial coke, anthracite and eucalyptus charcoal. The effects of the reductant type/properties on the reduction kinetics, metal composition and metal yield, have been quantified. Results show that the reduction rate is highly dependant on the type of carbon used. It was found that the reductant type significantly influenced the SiO2reduction while it did not seem to have a large effect on the MnO reduction. This may be due to the different CO2and SiO reactivities of the materials.
