The high incidence of accidents and fatalities in the South African mining industry, in particular those associated with falls of ground, is often attributed to ineffective and/or inappropriate training methods and material. Recently introduced mine health and safety legislation in South Africa also requires that all mine workers receive appropriate and effective training to enable them to operate safely in their given mining environment. There can, therefore, be no doubt that methods to provide effective training, in particular safety related training, are urgently required in the South African mining industry. In the search for alternative and improved training approaches, attention has fallen on virtual reality (VR) technology as a possible solution. VR has found acceptance in a number of industries as an effective method of training for a variety of work place activities, including those of a safety related nature. VR has successfully been applied in a number of industries to improve the effectiveness of safety and hazard awareness training. The CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (CSIR Miningtek), in conjunction with the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), therefore evaluated the potential of VR to be used as a training medium in the South African gold and platinum mining industry. Aspects of the evaluation included an assessment of the technical capability of VR to represent a typical underground mining environment with sufficient realism and the relevance of the VR training concept for a largely illiterate workforce. For these purposes, a prototype PC-based VR hazard awareness training simulator has been developed by CSIR Miningtek, and a series of evaluation sessions conducted at a typical deep level gold mine. The conclusion from this evaluation work is that virtual reality technology has the potential to provide effective training systems that are relevant to the South African mining industry. In recent years, the mineral applications dealing with more complex data in distributed environment have grown rapidly. Many mineral and mining organizations have to organize internally and globally distributed manufacturing and experiment sites, which share the roles of databases and other multi-services like software programs. Thus, there are commercial and technical pressures pushing the mineral software vendors to move their current service toward Web service. XML has gained wide acceptance for representing, storing and transferring structured data and documents of many kinds, especially in scientific communities. However, so far there is no such a Markup Language in mineral industry. A XML-based uniform encoding, which is called MineML(Mineral Markup Language), is proposed and developed in this project. The framework of the MineML specification is created. MineML will play the role as shared protocols within mineral domain for archiving, transferring the multi-nature data between the software packages on the desktop over the Internet and sharing the services between users at different sites. Inspired by MLA’s (Mineral Liberation Analyser, JKMRC, University of Queensland, Australia) Mineralogical Data Presentation Program, a proof-of-concept prototype of Web Service is developed here to validate and demonstrate the MineML specification. Certain strategies, specific technologies and tools are adopted to create such an environment. To accomplish that, a set of experimental MineML documents including correlated XML, XSD (schemas) and XSL(stylesheets) documents have been elaborated for archiving, presenting and transferring the mineralogical data information, with the persistence on flexibility and extensibility for generic mineral and mining data handling.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine previously used only A-grade material (>60% Fe in situ value) from the pit for beneficiating in the DMS plant to a final product grade of 66% Fe in lump and 65% Fe fine ore. The B-grade (between 50% and 60% Fe) and C-grade material (between 35% and 50% Fe) were stockpiled separately, owing to the inability of the existing DMS plant to beneficiate material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3. The ability to beneficiate the B-grade material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 was evaluated, and air-pulsed jigs were found to be techno-economically feasible and value maximizing. The beneficiation of B-grade material would add to the existing DMS production of 28 Mt/a, with no additional mining cost and only limited costs for the handling of waste and B-material. The objective of the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP), i.e. the jig plant, was to produce 10 Mt/a of saleable product with six modules to the set physical and chemical specifications by 2009. During the start of construction, it was decided to add another two jig modules to the plant to increase production to 13 Mt/a. During commissioning and ramp-up the shortcomings and advantages of the jigs were fully experienced and understood, resulting in many changes to optimize jigging performance..

Excavations in rock are commonly supported with wire mesh, shotcrete, wire mesh and shotcrete in combination, and shotcrete reinforced with various types of fibres. Wire rope lacing and various types of straps are additional forms of support installed over the above types, to cope with severe conditions. These support systems are very important items of ?membrane? rock support. With the recent development of several types of thin sprayed linings, the importance of membrane support is likely to increase in the future. In this paper, a wide range of mechanisms of membrane behaviour and mechanisms of loading of membranes, is described. The concepts of membrane components, which are single membranes that may be used on their own as rock support, and membrane systems, which are combinations of more than one membrane component, are introduced. Different situations have different requirements of membrane support, and differences between civil engineering and mining requirements are highlighted. With the different basic requirements in these two areas, the requirements of rock support are correspondingly different. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of behaviour of the different types of membranes, and the different mechanisms by which the membranes are loaded, is essential before a selection of appropriate support can be made, before appropriate design methods and calculations can be determined, and before appropriate performance test methods for membranes can be defined. The material in this paper contributes towards the understanding of membrane support behaviour.

"Modern tundishes have evolved as vessels to serve as the final step in refining of molten steel by removing inclusions and promoting thermochemical homogeneity.In this study the flow behaviour in a four-strand tundish was investigated by means of a ½-scale water model as well as numerical modelling. The numerical and physical models were used to characterize residence time distribution and calculate properties pertaining to tundish flow regime. Three different tundish configurations were investigated: a bare tundish with no flow control devices, a tundish with a turbulence inhibitor, and a tundish with both a turbulence inhibitor and a dam.The physical and numerical models showed that a tundish without flow control devices is prone to significant short-circuiting. A tundish with a turbulence inhibitor was shown to be successful in preventing shortcircuiting and provided surface-directed flow that might assist the removal of inclusions from the melt. However, it was also observed that the upward-directed flow caused the maximum turbulence kinetic energy near the surface to increase dramatically. The potential for slag entrainment should therefore be considered during the design and operation of tundishes with turbulence inhibitors."

To estimate the detailed characteristics of the rock around the cavern during excavation, new monitoring technique for dynamic properties of the rock has been applied. In this paper, micro-seismic monitoring and AE monitoring technique are applied to the excavation of large underground rock cavern and the result was discussed to clarify the acutal behavior of EDZ around the cavern. Zur Einschätzung der Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum haben die Autoren eine Technik eingesetzt, mit der die physikalischen und dynamischen Änderungen im Gestein um den Schacht während der Ausschachtung beobachtet werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde zur mikroseismischen Überwachung ein AE Überwachungsverfahren eingesetzt und die Autoren berichten über die Veränderungen in den Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum. Dans le but d'évaluer en détail les propriétés des roches qui forment les parois des cavernes creusées, les auteurs ont utilisé une technique de mesure permettant d’observer les modifications physico-dynamiques des roches aux alentours de la caverne pendant son excavation. Dans le cadre de cet article, une technique de surveillance de l’agitation et du bruit microséismiques a été mise en œuvre et les auteurs font état de la modification des propriétés de la roche environnante.

An experimental rig has been constructed to produce chloride stress corrosion cracks in Type 304L stainless steel tube samples. The samples are to be used to test possible in situ repair methods in future work. The factor which influences the time to failure most strongly is the sample temperature; the distribution of cracks within the sample is affected by local temperature variations and by the position of the water line. Low-frequency oscillations in stress, caused by the on-off temperature controller, did not appear to influence cracking in these tests.

The Merensky Reef zone, as developed on Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg Operations, displays a gradational mineralized zone, with grades decreasing from the Merensky Pegmatoid Unit into the footwall and hanging wall. A system of identifying a manageable method of defining the mining cut is introduced, termed the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade. Although horizontal grade selectivity is not applied in the mining of the Merensky Reef zone, low extraction of the orebody, due to manageable and non-manageable factors, can contribute to a reduction in revenue, even losses, due to fixed cost contributions in the mining and beneficiation of the ore. A model is proposed that integrates all variables affecting the revenue of the mining operation, including the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade, the extraction factors, commodity prices and exchange rates, utilizing numerical simulation techniques in a PC-based environment. A breakeven extraction factor for a specific cut-off grade is delivered for a range of market conditions. The breakeven extraction factor is a useful guide when designing mining layouts in structurally complex and low metal content areas. Incorporating distribution functions for individual commodity prices and exchange rates into the model provides mineral resource managers with a risk profile for individual mining areas. Shaft areas have varying grade profiles and each area should have individual models run, to prevent generalizations being made about acceptable risk levels on mining areas.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Sc Eng (Extractive Metallurgy) degree Screening is an industrial process that splits material at a specific cut size into one fraction of particles larger than the cut size and another fraction of particles smaller than the cut size. Particles are vibrated to increase the probability of them being accurately classified and to move the oversize particles off the screen surface. In conventional screening, the screen mesh vibrates with a single frequency and the particles on the screen are all exposed to this same frequency. The Ultimate Screener (see Figure 1) is a new screen technology that imparts multi-frequency vibrations to the screen mesh so that different parts of the screen surface vibrate at different frequencies. The Ultimate Screener incorporates an additional deck that holds the multi frequency adapters as shown by Figure 2. These special adapters can transform single frequency vibrations into multi frequency vibrations. When the screen motors are switched on they begin to vibrate. This vibration is transmitted to the adapters via the body of the machine. The adapters then modify the vibration to have multiple frequencies, which are transmitted to the screen surface via resonating rings.

Bateman Modular (previously Van Eck and Lurie) has been building and supplying the mining industry with modular DMS plants for the last 30 years. These DMS modules range in capacity from 1 tph to 200 tph. The most popular unit produced by Bateman Modular over the years has been the 50 tph module. Development In the last 7 years a need has arisen from the industry to provide Modular DMS plants that can treat higher tonnages (150 to 200 tph). The first DMS provided to the mining industry based on the modular concept was a 150 tph DMS Module to MIBA in the DRC. Since then Bateman Modular has provided some 14 Mega DMS modules over the last 7 years with the latest two orders from Debswana (Damtshaa double up project) and Namdeb. Ever since the first Mega Module was supplied Bateman Modular has been improving the Modules. Implementation The modules can be supplied in different configurations so as to improve the overall availability of the plant. Two off 150 tph DMS modules were supplied for a Transhex operation. This allowed the client to still operate one DMS module while maintenance is being performed on the other DMS module. The client also has the option of choosing a single module. Successes The following list of projects provides the base for the success of the Mega Modules.

Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as residues merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps. For example, a process has been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glassy slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser)the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial. Konkola No 3 shaft experienced severe mining induced stress and time related deterioration in ground conditions in an area where an over-cut and bench (OCB) mining method was used to extract a shallow dipping wide orebody. This caused an unacceptable risk for safe mining operations to sustain the required levels of production. After a review of the conditions it was decided to change the mining method to CASCADE to recover ore in the affected area and modify the OCB method and use a modified over-cut and bench method (MOCB) for new mining sections. This paper describes the geotechnical criteria included to derive the mining standards for the MOCB. The geotechnical risks are identified and taken into account to develop stope design parameters, stoping sequences and support requirements. A monitoring programme to assess conditions as mining progresses is also discussed.

The split-lining structure was newly developed for the air-tight lining of the underground compressed air storage cavern. This structure consists of separated reinforced concrete (RC) segments and air-tight membrane. It is most important for the Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine (CAES-G/T) system to develop the economical lining. In order to verify the applicability of split-lining structure, CAES-G/T pilot plant was constructed and operated for 6 months. We confirmed the practical usefulness and safety of this system through the operation. This paper presents the mechanical behaviour of surrounding rock mass and the lining structure observed through the operation of CAES-G/T pilot plant. Nous avons mis au point une structure de revêtement modulaire pour le revêtement des cavernes souterraines hermétiques à pression. Ce revêtement est composé de segments de béton armé et de membranes hermétiques. Il était très important, pour le CAES-G/T (Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine), de développer un revêtement économique. Afin de vérifier l’aptitude d’application de notre revêtement modulaire, nous avons construit un système pilote CAES-G/T et nous avons effectué des essais de fonctionnement pendant six mois. Ces essais nous ont permis de confirmer l’utilité et la sécurité du système. A travers le présent rapport, nous rendons compte de la structure de ce nouveau type de revêtement et du comportement mécanique de la masse rocheuse environnante que nous avons pu observer au cours desdits essais. Als luftdichter Druckbehälter wurde eine gegliederte Belagsstruktur für tief unterirdisch liegende Felshöhlungen entwickelt. Diese Struktur ist aus Stahlbetonabdeckung und luftdichter Plane aufgebaut. Bei der Entwicklung des Pressluftgasturbinen – Stromerzeugungssystems (CAES-G/T) war es die wichtigste Aufgabe, einen wirtschaftlichen Belag zu entwickeln. Deswegen wurde zum Nachweis der Effektivität der gegliederten Belagsstruktur eine Pilotanlage errichtet und 6 Monate lang betrieben. Durch den Betrieb konnten wir die Praktikabilität und Sicherheit des Systems bestätigen. Dieser Aufsatz ist ein Bericht über das Verhalten der durch Betrieb der CAES-G/T Pilotanlage beobachteten Belagsstruktur und umliegenden Felsmasse.

The paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining systems. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins. The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economic and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefit, whilst underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems.

A 21st Century worker is one who works less with his physical power and more with mental ability. Such a worker is more skilled than a labourer and is consequently rewarded accordingly. A21st Century supervisor is one who ensures that workers are constantly supported so that they can maximize safety and productivity. A 21st Century manager is one who constantly searches for ways to maximize returns for the various stakeholders. Given the well-known constraints in narrow reef mining, all of the above is meaningless unless a mining method is found which provides conditions which support the 21st Century initiatives. [ ] The identified mining method is a continuous non-explosive stope breaking system using rocksplitter technology. Rocksplitting is defined as: The fragmentation of rock through high energy pulse wave transmission in a fluid-filled hole or hydro fracturing. Shotholes are effectively filled with a water-based geland 30 grams of explosive after which the hole is closed off with a ?rocksplitting gun?.

In engineering design of operator?s compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra-low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomics principles within the collective design process, ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost-effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity.

When slope angles are designed during open pit optimization, there is a risk factor applied in steepening the slopes. The steepening of slope angles has implications for the safety and economics of the mining operation. The steeper the slope angles, the greater the probability of slope failure. Although a slope failure will result in added costs, the challenge is to compile an accurate cost-benefit exercise optimizing the economic benefits of the project without exposing mine workers and equipment to unacceptable risk of rockfalls. A balance between the safety of the operation and the economics of the investment is therefore required. The ideal situation is to have a slope monitoring system that will predict slope failure by detecting any ground movement before the actual failure occurs. This early warning will allow the risk factor to be applied with a high degree of confidence, knowing that the risk will be adequately mitigated. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines on how to design an optimal survey slope monitoring system. It is the authors? view that for a survey monitoring system to yield desirable results, it should adhere to survey principles such as working from the whole to part and consistently cross-checking. The case study used is Jwaneng Mine, and the design strategy outlined can be used as a guideline for developing a new slope monitoring system or to optimize an existing one.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed.
