"One phase of the Bureau of Mines' work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To promote the development of such devices the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus3/ gas masks/, supplied-air respirators5/ (hose masks, airline respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), and mechanical-filter respirators6/.Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules.As a prerequisite to such submittal, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been subjected to inspections and tests such as described in the schedules, and that it met those requirements when tested by the manufacturer or his testing agency; and a. statement regarding the nature, adequacy, and continuity of control of the quality of the respirator. If the manufacturer can satisfy these requirements, and if the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets its requirements, a certificate of approval is granted by the Bureau of Mines. The approved devices bear distinguishing marks that indicate that they have been approved, the purpose for which they are approved, and the limitations of their use. If it is found at any time that approved devices purchased in the oven market and tested do not meet the requirements of the schedule, the Bureau may rescind that approval. Lists7/ of approved devices are published periodically for the convenient information of the public.Respiratory equipment may be divided into two main groups: (1). Those that afford protection by removing atmospheric contaminants and (2) those by which a respirable atmosphere from an uncontaminated source is supplied to the wearer.The devices that protect by the removal of contaminants may be divided into two subgroups: (1) Those that protect against gaseous contaminants and (2) those that protect against particulate matter. There may, of course, be combinations of these two.The devices by which a respirable atmosphere is furnished to the wearer also may be divided into two subgroups: (1) The self-contained type, by which the supply of oxygen, or material from which the oxygen can be generated is carried by the wearer, and (2) the hose type, by which air is supplied to the wearer through a hose or tube."

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements show that grinding of quartz particles in air produces silicon-based (Si- and SiO-) radicals which decay with aging in air. ESR spin trapping measurements provide evidence for the generation of hydroxyl and possibly superoxide radicals from a suspension of fresh quartz particles. The hydroxyl radical generation potential of the fresh quartz particles decreases on storing in ambient air and on the addition of catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. Silica-induced lipid peroxidation also decreases on storing the fresh particles in ambient air. These findings suggest that oxygenated radicals play a role in the biochemical mechanism of pneumoconiosis in general and acute silicosis in particular.INTRODUCTIONThis communication summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated radicals by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its potential role in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis. This study was undertaken because the mechanisms by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood. 1-3 It is generally believed, however, that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process. 1,4 Since the first step must involve surface reactions, characterization of the chemical structure of the surface of quartz particles has been the subject of several recent studies!-' For example, we reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates silicon-based (Si• and SiO•) radicals which decay with time, and that these radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to that of an aged dust from the same stock. 6,8 Independently Fubini and coworkers' have also reported on the formation of Si• and SiO• -type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. Gulumian and van Wyk9 have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals. These authors9 suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity but the mechanism of the -OH radical formation was not clarified. Earlier, Gabor and Anca10 had suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radical and hence capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently, Weitzman and Graceffa 11 reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of -OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work12 indicated that lipid peroxidation might be one of the mechanisms of tissue injury by asbestos."

PETROLEUM INVESTIGATIONS. The work of the petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines during the period of the war was under the supervision of Chester Naramore, chief petroleum technologist. In its petroleum investigations the bureau cooperated freely with other Government bureaus and acted as a source of information on petroleum matters. COOPERATIVE WORK ON INTERALLIED PETROLEUM COMMISSION. On July 15, 1918, Mr. Naramore and W. E. Perdew, chemical en- gineer of the bureau, left for London to act as representatives of the United States Fuel Administration and the United States Shipping Board on the Inter-allied Petroleum Commission. Numerous con- ferences were held with representatives from France, England, and Italy on specifications and requirements of the various allied Govern- ments for petroleum products, and for this purpose meetings were held in London, Paris, and Rome. EXAMINATION OF PETROLEUM FACILITIES IN FRANCE. The storage facilities and the transportation system in France were studied, and recommendations based on the information gained were made to the director of the oil division of the Fuel Administra- tion and to the chairman of the Shipping Board. Refinery plants in France were inspected, as well as filling stations and shipping facilities from ports in France and Italy to the various fronts and the petroleum base of the American Expeditionary Force at Romorantin. France. At the request of Ambassador Sharp, a re- port was prepared on the advisability of developing the petroleum resources in France.

Titanium is a well-known component of bauxite ores, sometimes occurring in sufficient quantity to mace its recovery worth considering. This question has been raised by some of the companies lixiviating bauxite ores. At the East St. Louis plant of the Aluminum Ore Co., a subsidiary of the Aluminum Co. of America, the waste sludge discharged daily contains over 75,000 pounds of Ti02. The sludge is all through 20-mesh, and a large proportion is slime. A supple of the waste was deslimed so that a gravity-concentration test of the "sand" could be made. The Aluminum Ore Co. cooperated in the work and made the chemical determinations In order to anticipate the results of table concentration a series of specific gravity fractions (float-and-sink) was made with heavy liquids. Acetylene tetrabromide was used for a density of 2.95, methylene iodide for 3.33, and thallium formate for 3.78, and the double salt of thallium formate-malonate made the separation at slimed sample appears in Table 1.

The Burrell methane indicator developed by Col. G. A. Burrell in 1915 was modified during 1918 to the " insulated type " Burrell indicator . Though this instrument has been used in mines since its first introduction , it was not formally approved as safe and efficient for use in gaseous mines until March , 1922. The indicator is built by the Mine Safety Appliances Co. , Pittsburgh , Pa . Approval No. 800 has been assigned to this company covering the device in the form approved . The principle of the Burrell indicator is fairly well known . It works on the same principle as the Haldane apparatus - measuring by means of a graduated scale , the contraction resulting from burning the methane content of an air and gas sample . A given aniount of the mine atmosphere to be tested for methane is taken into the indicator . This sample is then thoroughly shaken with the water in the indicator for one minute . The methane in the sample is now burned for two minutes by a heated platinum coil , which is energized by a small storage battery containing two Edison cells connected in series . After the glower or coil has burned for two minutes , it is disconnected from the battery , and the indicator is again shaken for The amount of contraction observed by reading the height the water rises in the U- tube of the indicator , which is calibrated to register the percentage of gas in the sample . The indicator as approved by the Bureau of Mines is equipped with an Edison M- 8 mine- lamp battery , and with a glass and scale graduated from zerɔ tɔ four per cent methane . The approval of a corbination service that is , an attachment for giving illumination from the same battery from which the platinum glower is operated has been withheld pending the development of a battery with larger capacity . - Under laboratory operating conditions , a single glower was capable of making at least 20 determinations if proper precautions were observed with respect to the use of freshly charged batteries . A battery should be allowed to stand off charge several hours before using in an indicator , as the peak voltage of a freshly charged Edison cell is abnormally high and is likely to send enough current through the glower to melt the platinum wire . Fifty-seven satisfactory operations were obtained from a completely charged battery . The point where the voltage of the cell fell below 2.3 volts with the glower attached was taken as the lower limit of successful operation . A voltage less than 2.3 does not permit the lower to burn at a temperature that will completely burn the gas in the air , thus giving a false indication .

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. Delays will be introduced into the cycle of operations because the shuttle cars must be stopped and positioned on the platform. However, these delays can be held to a minimum, time wise, as the

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation to study the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and water spray in suppressing respirable dust at the tips of a saw-type cutting wheel. Suppression efficiencies were found to be proportional to the amount of the water or steam applied at the cutter tips. For equivalent water output rates, a maximum efficiency of approximately 80 percent was reached for both steam and water spray. Results from the steam and water spray tests showed an increase in suppression efficiency with an increase in particle size of 1 to 8 micrometers. The data indicate no advantages for using steam as a dust suppressant.

In an effort aimed at monitoring mining-induced stress changes that may influence ground failure, the US Bureau of Mines conducted a series of active 3-D seismic tomographic surveys at the Homestake (Lead, South Dakota) and Lucky Friday (Mullan, Idaho) mines. Existing rock bolts were used to mount geophones and as strike points for introducing seismic energy using a 3.6 kg sledge hammer. Travel time measurements were recorded spanning up to 160 m between drifts at several levels. The tomographic uncertainty was minimized by computing iso-velocity surfaces of constant probability based on statistics from multiple reconstructions and a threshold criteria. Periodic imaging using tomographic velocity surfaces demonstrated that temporal and spatial changes in the local stress field occurred in response to ground failure and stope advancement at a gold and silver mine, respectively. This paper presents arguments which show that a velocity seismograph should be used to measure building and ground vibrations produced by blasting . However , portable velocity seismographs suitable for this type of measurement are not commercially available . The paper describes how a velocity seismograph can be assembled from commercially available velocity gages , amplifiers , and recorders . Also , specifications are given which could be used in the design and manufacture of a portable velocity seismograph suitable for measuring vibrations from blasting .

"This paper describes the study of bit wear characteristics on three types of rock namely Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. High content of quartz with quartz cement in Tennessee sandstone causes removal of material from the bit body and dam2ge to the tip of the bit resulting into excessive weight and height loss as compared to other two types of rock. The drum speed and water spray pressure do not contribute significant effect on bit wear. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PCD) tipped bits are more wear resistant than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits, but, due to wider body of PCD bits, the wear rate increases particularly at greater depth of cut. INTRODUCTIONThe impact of bit-rock interaction during the cutting process in underground coal mines has always attracted the-interests of mining operators, researchers and the manufacturers. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation which causes ""black lung"" in coal workers. On the other hand, rock cutting generates frictional sparks causing face ignitions. The bit wear not only produces airborne rcspirable coal dust , but also affects the productivity, safety and economy. Hun and Evans (J) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits. The results of a study (2) suggested that after 7% of weight loss, the bit should be replaced. In a survey study (3), it was found that the bit consumption of bit had an effect on the productivity and utilization of the continuous miners. The mining industry is yet to receive a solution which could provide them with optimum operating parameters for coal cutting machines in underground C9al mines.The study was, therefore, taken up to determine wear characteristics as influenced by the rock propenies and varying operating parameters. For the purpose of this study, three types of rock, Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone were used. The machine operating parameters included (i) drum speed, (ii) water spray pressure and (iii) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics, the effects of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emission generation and bit temperature rise were also studied. Also, the preliminary experiments were performed to compare the bit wear between PCD and WC tipped bits."

This report describes work done as part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. The work included both field reconnaissance and a spot churn-drilling program. Much general information was available, as a result of earlier work done under the Western Radioactive Minerals Exploration Program conducted between 1950 and 1954 by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. This particular exploration provided data as to the quantity of ilmenite (TiFe03) and accessory black-sand mineral concentrates in a number of placer deposits; however, at that time no tests were made to ascertain if the ilmenite was of marketable grade. The spot churn drilling was begun in the Gold Fork area of Long Valley, Valley County, Idaho (fig. 1), in August 1956 and was completed during October of the same year. Eleven holes (designated as the GF series on fig. 2) 35 to 45 feet in depth, aggregating 425 feet, were completed during this period. Data from other exploration drilling in 1951 was used in this report. The 13 holes in the G series shown in figure 2 were drilled by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission; the 7 holes of the DH series were drilled by the Bureau of Reclamation. The 20 holes, ranging from 16 to 140 feet in depth, totaled 1,625 feet. The combined number of all samples recovered was 422. Those taken in 1956 were composited for each drill hole and sent to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., for analyses.

"Dust abatement by water sprays involves the subprocesses of 1) collision between dust particles and water droplets, 2) adhesion of particles to droplets, and 3) engulfment of particles by the droplets. A review of the fundamental aspects of these subprocesses shows that collisions between particles and droplets are determined by aerodynamics and the size and surface charge of the particles and of the droplets. However, the adhesion and engulfment subprocesses depend upon the wetting characteristics of the particles. Although wetting agents (also known as surfactants) have been used as dust suppressants in several investigations, conflicting results are available regarding their effectiveness. In this paper, we show that these results can be explained if the effects of coal rank on surfactant adsorption and wetting characteristics are taken into account.The influence of several nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy adducts on the wetting behavior of coal is presented. The wetting was determined by a modified Walker Test method, and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wettability of coal depends upon coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant, and the number of ethoxy groups in the molecule.IntroductionDue to the inherent nature of the mining process, a large number of particles are generated, a portion of which becomes airborne to create dust. Dust can be aesthetically and environmentally unacceptable and it can also be explosive. Fine particles in the respirable size range ( < 5 urn) are con-sidered to cause lung diseases, namely, silicosis, pneumoconiosis, etc.(1) Several approaches to reduce dust in mine environments are practiced throughout the mining industry. These include decrease in generation of dust through improvements in mine machinery, ventilation (in which lower dust levels are achieved by dilution of contaminated air with clean air), and dust removal methods. Water sprays are most commonly used to remove dust par-ticles. Recently, scrubbers are reported to have been installed on mining machines to remove dust,(2,3) which also make use of water sprays to reduce dust."

Develop quieted, hand-held pneumatic percussion drills that can replace standard hand-held drills in many underground mining applications. The Problem Percussion drills are the noisiest machines used in underground mines; noise levels of 115 to 120 dBA are common, requiring the use of hearing protectors and limiting the time a miner is permit-ted to operate the drill during an 8-hour shift. Hand-held pneumatic percussion drills pose a particularly difficult problem because the operator cannot be isolated from the noise source (e.g., an acoustical cab), and alternative technologies for drilling roof bolt holes and blastholes in tight quarters are not readily available.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

Near-optimum parameters were determined by the Bureau of Mines for vapor deposition of rhenium on heated copper substrates by hydrogen reduction of rhenium hexafluoride (ReF6). High-purity deposits of nearly 90-percent theo¬retical density were obtained with the reaction chamber at 250° C, with an H2 to ReF6 volume ratio of 25 to 1, and with an ReF6 flow rate of 5 grams per hour. Some rhenium deposited as a loose, black powder. When the established near-optimum parameters were carefully followed, this could be minimized but never completely avoided. Varying the reaction chamber pressure, both above and below atmospheric, yielded excessive quantities of rhenium powder. Deposition efficiencies, based on only the coherent metal, ranged between 70 and 75 percent. Massive deposits contained only spectrographic traces of impurities. The average microhardness (Knoop, 100-gram load) of vapor-deposited rhenium was 907. Limited research on the deposition of rhenium-tungsten alloys by reduction of the mixed hexafluorides produced deposits in which linear composition gradients were pronounced; this nonhomogeneity was attributed to the wide variation in optimum hydrogen-reduction temperatures of the two hexafluorides (250° C for ReF6 and 550° C for WF6). Using deposition temperatures between 250° and 550° C did not eliminate the composition variations.

This is the third of a series of reports on a survey of petroleum prod- ucts manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils. California crudes differ in many characteristics from the petroleum produced in the other parts of the United States, and the claim has been made that some of the present Federal Specifications for petroleum products tend to discriminate against Cali- fomia products. The purposes of the present survey are to determine what par- ticular specification requirements Califomia petroleum products characteristical ly fail to meet, how widely the products deviate from these requirements, and if possible to show whether the fault lies with the specifications or the products, or along what lines investigation to determine this question should proceed. The first report of the series gave the physical and chemical properties of the samples of gasoline and mineral spirits. A second report**, gave the physical and chemical properties of samples of lubricating oils. The present report deals entirely with burning and fuel oils. The refin ing companies have continued their very cordial and helpful cooperation. Seven samples of kerosene, four samples of Diesel fuel and eight samples of fuel oil were obtained. The methods of analysis used are those adopted by the Interdepartmental Petroleum Specifications Committee, published by the Bureau of Mines in Technical Paper No. 323. The specifications used for corparison are those officially adopted by the Federal Specifications Board for the use of the various Depart- ments and Independent Establishments of the Government, effective February 3, 1923, and published by the Bureau of Mines in Technical Paper No. 323, Part 1. Specific gravity, degrees A.P.I., viscosity and other special tests al- though not required by the specifications have been given for comparison. All temperatures are recorded in degrees Fahrenheit. Tables have been prepared giving data on physical and chemical propertios of the individual samples. Before each table the classification and specifica- tions for the particular class of oil considered in the table are given. Follow- ing each table, brief notes show wherein samples deviate from specification re- quirements.

Mining and processing cost analyses were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on stratiform zinc-lead-silver, coal, and stratiform barite deposit types that are found in the Colville Mining District. Reserves and gross revenues which would allow these deposits to be minable were modeled. A 15% Discounted cash-flow rate-of-return economic threshold was selected as the minimum acceptable return on investment for the three deposit types. The economic modeling indicated combinations of grades and tonnages for stratiform sulfide deposits that could be economically viable for orebodies ranging in size from 25 to 130 million metric tons. The gross revenues for a surface mine range from $200/mt for a 5,000 mtpd operation using the proposed South corridor to $140/mt for a 17,000 mtpd mine using the proposed North corridor. The economic modeling indicated underground coal mining was subeconomic for deposits ranging in size from 42 to 250 million metric tons. The required gross revenues ranged from $300/mt for a 2,200 mtpd mine to $21 D/mt for a 13,000 mtpd mine. The economic modeling indicated supplying projected in-state barite demand was subeconomic for the three seasonal surface mines modeled. The required gross revenues ranged from $600/mt for a 90,000 mtpy mine to $840/mt for a 6,000 mtpy mine.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Ground Hog Unit of the Asarco Mining Co., a subsidiary of the American Smelting and Refining Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United Stated. The Ground Hog mine is at Vanadium in the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., about 1.0 miles east of Silver City and 2 ½ miles southwest of Santa Rita. A branch line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway connects Vanadium with Deming, about 45 miles southeast.
