For 1991, the aggregate value of world international export trade in mineral commodities was roughly estimated at $685 billion in current 1991 dollars. The estimated level was about 6 % higher than that for 1990, but still more than 3 % below the record high set in 1980, and the year was the fifth in a row in which the value of exported minerals advanced. Table 8 provides a data series for the estimated value of world export trade in all mineral commodities from 1979 through 1991, as well as a breakdown of this total into fuel and non fuel commodities. The data shown are based on the historically more traditional and realistic (from the viewpoint of data availability) practice of reporting trade values for the year before the year of review. Despite the considerable increase in the dollar value of mineral commodity exports, their share of total export merchandise trade declined to 19.1 % in 1990 from 19.7% in 1989. At 19.1 %, this share was very near the recent year record low of 19.0% reached in 1988. Comparable 1991 figures were not available in time for inclusion here, but it is expected that the mineral commodity share of the total will be little altered from that of 1990.

The Other South Pacific Island states extend from Palau, also called Belau, near the Philippines in the west, to French Polynesia in the east. However, a number of countries and territories have been omitted, from this chapter because their mineral production was insignificant to the local economy. These include the French over-seas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; independent states, including Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands, and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. What mineral production existed in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities solely for domestic consumption. FIJI The mineral industry of Fiji continued to be dominated by gold, although this sector contributed less than 1 % to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country. Gold and silver together ranked second in value among the country's exports. Fiji's economy contracted 11% during the 8-month period following the first, on May 14, of two military coups. Although the island nation had been a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since its independence on October 10, 1970, Fiji's membership terminated with the emergence of the Republic or Fiji on October 15.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process for producing high-purity zinc and tin by electrorefining from liquid amalgams. Commercial grade metals were dissolved in mercury to produce saturated amalgams at room temperature. Amalgams were also prepared by electrolytic transfer from soluble anodes of the metals to a mercury cathode. Amalgams formed by both methods were used as anodes in electrorefining cells to produce high-purity cathodes. Metal impurities, excluding mercury, were at levels of less than 5 ppm in zinc and 9 ppm in tin. Mercury content was about 2 to 10 ppm in zinc products, and this was effectively removed by heating the cathodes in a vacuum. Mercury was excluded from tin cathodes by pumping the tin electrolyte through tin turnings and controlling the cell temperature.

The heats of solution of erbium chloride in water and in hydrochloric acid and of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined. The results reveal a discrepancy of 10.5 kcal. per gram-atom between the heats of combustion and solution of erbium reported in the literature, the heat of combustion being more negative. The heat of combustion of erbium t4)4 and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (1, 18) have been reported in the literature. The heat of solution of erbium chloride was determined in two studies (2, 19). The present work was undertaken to check the reported heats of solution of erbium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid. The latter quantity permits the heats of combustion and solution of erbium to be compared for mutual consistency. It was also desired to determine the degree of similarity between the thermochemistry of yttrium and erbium.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a brief summary of the explosion trends in United States coal mines for the past 160 years. These trends show that in spite of the overall improvements in mine safety, the number of fatalities from ignitions of methane has actually increased in recent years. Suggestions are made of procedures that can be utilized to reverse this trend.

The video segments are meant to be visual models of good performance. They are designed to elicit discussion on good (lower risk) ways to do the job. In this context, they can be used very creatively at different times within the training cycle. The section on “Talking Points” offers a number of questions that can be used in the classroom to support and elaborate on certain aspects of the job duties. If the trainee has a fair amount of underground experience, some of the questions can also be used to support the pretraining assessment (i.e., skill check) of knowledge and skills. Likewise, some of the questions can also be used while teaching on the job to reinforce key points affecting safety, production, or maintenance. The section dealing with a mine’s roof control plan should be used at various times in the training cycle to make sure the trainee understands the plan and knows how to apply it in performing the job. The supplemental materials offer additional resources that can be used to support initial job training or follow-up. Learning continues well after an individual has been trained. The supplemental materials can help reinforce good operating skills and provide an opportunity for further discussion on better ways to do the job.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel CO.'s Sunnyside No. 1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pct.

An underground investigation was designed and implemented by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable concrete roof supports. The pumpable roof supports were instrumented with hydraulic pressure cells to measure support loading. Displacement of the support was also measured to assess the support reaction to ground movements. Movement up to 12.5 m (40 ft) into the roof was measured with sonic probes and multipoint extensometers. Borehole pressure cells were installed in the panel fender and outby pillars to evaluate load transfer. Shield loading was also assessed to determine the impact of the panel fender yielding on face loading. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 3.12 m (10 ft) from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 10 m (32 ft) horizon with total deformation ranging from five to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches), indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results. Understanding the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields is providing valuable information for the refinement of the NIOSH Ground Reaction Curve for standing and intrinsic roof support system design.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Its estimated recoverable reserves in Fayette County are between 670 and 800 million tons. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in determining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ton of coal.

Chapman-Jouguet detonation calculations were carried out for pentaerythri-tol tetranitrate (PETN), TNT, and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) explosives using the compressibility form of an equation of state of hard spheres based upon Percus-Yevick (PY) theory, and a chemical equilibrium detonation code called TIGER. Similar calculations were also carried out with the Becker-Kistiakowsky-Wilson (BKW) equation of state. For PETN, the BKW equation gives somewhat better agreement with experimental values of detonation velocity and pressure. However, in terms of experimental temperatures and concentrations of the minor product species (NO), the predictions of the PY equation are shown to be more satisfactory. Similar comparisons of experimental and theoretical results for TNT and AN-FO indicate that the PY equation has general utility in predicting the detonation properties of condensed explosives at moderate loading densities (Po < 1.3 g/cm3).

The effect of slag composition on lead losses to slags and on the behavior of associated accessory elements in lead blast furnace smelting has been studied by the Bureau of Mines. Equilibrations of 30 g of lead and synthetic slag doped with Cu, In, TI, and Sb at 1,200° C in CO-C02 atmospheres revealed the importance of the FeO:Si02 ratio and the basicity ratio, (CaO+MgO):SiO2, of the slag. Lead losses to slags increased with an increasing FeO:Si02 ratio and decreased with an in-creasing basicity ratio. Copper and indium distribution coefficients, [Lx =] increased from 15 at the lower basicity ratios to near 60 at higher basicity ratios. LTI values increased from 20 to 150 as slag basicity increased. Lcu, Lin, and LTI were relatively in-dependent of the FeO:Si02 ratio, but increased with greater amounts of accessory elements in the system. Antimony distribution alone was shown to be strongly affected by FeO:Si02 ratio, although data were scattered. LSb values ranged from 20 to 800 and decreased sharply with increasing FeO:Si02 ratios. The basicity ratio and the level of accessory element load did not have any noticeable effect on LSb.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to devise technology for increasing the Nation&apos;s mineral supply by recovering valuable constituents from currently discarded waste materials. Municipal solid waste (MSW), presently a major disposal problem, represents a significant source of metals, glass, and a combustible fraction that can be used to supplement coal in generating heat and electricity. As part of the total metallurgical system to treat MSW, this study evaluates the combustible fraction of MSW to characterize the various combustible components and to identify the principal sources of elements that eventually may be objectionable from corrosive or environmental considerations. Several possible sources for cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc have been tentatively identified. These sources are pigments, inks, paper stock, and additives to plastics. A correlation between industry consumption values and measured concentrations in MSW was found for several elements.

Most stone mines are limestone mines, but a substantial minority are marble, sandstone, and granite mines. These mines differ from most others in that entry widths are 30 ft or more and entry heights are 25 ft or more. Such mines, developed with room-and-pillar methods, have large open areas that can make ventilation and dust control more difficult. Because of the difficulty of ventilating stone mines, improved ventilation is a major focal point of this chapter. However, the chapter also covers the control of dust from drills, blasting, and crushers. Another part of the chapter covers enclosed cabs, an effective dust control technique for some workers. BACKGROUND The major dust compliance problem in stone mines is caused by silica (quartz) in the rock. Mines in high-silica rock, 8% or more, are far more likely to have a dust problem than those where there is less silica. Geographically, the limestone in the Northeastern and South Central United States has higher silica than the rest of the country. Chekan and Colinet [2002] have analyzed Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) dust sampling results [MSHA 2001] from the stone industry. They have concluded that, on average across the United States, the workers exposed to the highest dust concentrations are rotary drill operators, front-end loader operators, truck drivers, and crusher operators. However, there are many regional differences. Also, occupations that work outside of cabs, such as blasters, roof bolters, and laborers, can be exposed to high dust levels.

"Natural gas-gasoline is made by collecting in the liquid state the condensable hydrocarbon vapors that exist in different natural gases in varying amounts. In the richer type of natural gas the gasoline is generally recovered by compression and cooling. If exceedingly high pressure or low temperature is used, there is dissolved in the gasoline a large amount of very volatile material, which evaporates rapidly at atmospheric temperature and pressure.In the leaner type of natural gas, the gasoline vapors are selectively absorbed from the permanent gases by passing the natural gas through an absorbing oil. The gasoline is recovered by distilling the saturated oil, and as compared with ""compression"" gasoline is of high Baume' gravity and low vapor pressure. Before a volatile gasoline can be transported in tank cars, it is necessary to decrease its volatility in order to lessen the risk of fire or explosion, as well as to prevent excessive evaporation in transit. This can be accomplished either by weathering the gasoline, or by blending it with a more stable material, naphtha being commonly used in the weathering process the more volatile portions of the gasoline are allowed to evaporate and the losses in volume are very large, therefore, blending is preferable, wherever possible.It is very difficult, however, to produce by blending, in gasoline plants, a motor fuel which is equal to straight-run refinery gasoline. In order to make a blended motor fuel of a grade equal to straight-run gasoline, only a small percentage of natural gas-gasoline can be blended with the naphtha, consequently it is customary to blend the gasoline with only enough naphtha to enable It to be shipped to an oil refinery when the material is again blended to form a finished motor fuel."

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has dictated major changes in mine ventilation with regard to both air quantity and quality. Requirements have also been placed on the ventilation of beltlines, gob and face areas, and air velocities on trolley haulage roads are limited. Escapeways, separate from trolley haulage roads and on an intake split of air, must be maintained continuous to the surface. These and other similar requirements have not only precipitated several modifications to existing ventilation systems but also have greatly increased the complexities of new mine ventilation planning. It is apparent that the use of computers in ventilation system analysis and design is a necessity. SUMMARY Although computer oriented analysis of mine ventilation systems was introduced over two decades ago, it has yet to receive widespread acceptance in the United States. Central to this problem is the fact that, while many computer programs for network analysis have been developed, no attention has been paid to the development of computer input data. Consequently, without this foundation, program applications have been infrequent. This thesis has directly attacked this problem and has presented all pertinent information basic to the development of good computer input data. The areas that were covered include quantity measurement, pressure measurement, fan testing, survey data balancing, and the development of a network schematic from the ventilation survey results. These discussions on data collection and the corresponding reduction to computer coding have been illustrated by an application of a ventilation simulation program to an existing mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The theoretical relationships that are used to calculate in situ rock stress magnitudes and directions from borehole deformation data obtained during overcoring are based on the assumption that the rock is a linearly elastic material. Strictly speaking, this assumption is not valid in any rock. Thus, investigators using overcoring techniques must either accept various degrees of nonlinearity and the associated inaccuracies or use core testing techniques that address the problem and compensate for elastic nonlinearity. Previously developed test procedures for stress-relief overcores partially correct for nonlinearity. This Bureau of Mines paper describes a test procedure that completely corrects for elastic nonlinearity in stress-relief overcores.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of three samples collected from the Kidney seam, in the Northern Field of the anthracite region. Removal of the sink 1.70 specific gravity material from the samples collected would result in greatly reduced ash contents at yields in excess of 90 percent. The Kidney seam, in the locations sampled, proved to be a low-ash anthracite containing an unusually high percentage of float 1.45 specific gravity material.
