RBH Note: in 1913 black powder was still dominant as a coal-mining explosive, but permissible explosives were making some slight headway. For example, in 1902 there were only 11,300 pounds of permissibles used in coal mining, but in 1913 the quantity was 21,801,285 pounds. However, there were 187,551,653 pounds of black powder used that year. It took many years before the use of black powder ended in coal mining. From the picture of the miner reparing his explosives it’s hard to tell what he’s using, but the fact that a wooden Du Pont powder box is shown, he’s probably not using black powder. That doesn’t mean he’s using a permissible, either, since that was not yet a requirement. It’s interesting that the miners have open flame cap lamps, and the miner is actually smoking a pipe while preparing his explosives.

Noise and vibration produced by blasting generate curiosity and concern from neighbors. Experiments conducted in Sweden, Canada and U.S.A. have established that fine cracks in the plaster--the weakest part of building components--appear at a particle velocity of 4.0" per second or more. Taking into account the margin of safety, the safe zone criteria of 2.0" per second has been established.

The explosives manufacturers have done an excellent job of hazard and operability studies allowing criteria to be established for the safe pumping of water based blasting agents. The challenge of a Bulk Trucks or Mobile Manufacturing Units (MMUs) manufacturer is to take the objectives of the regulatory agencies and the explosives manufacturers and responsibly design and build MMUs that are safe, compliant, and cost effective without compromising serviceability.

The purpose of the Solid Medium Controlled Blasting Technique and Its Applications is to have the inside of the vessel-shaped framework (e.g: oil tank , water pool, gas chamber, chimney, water tower, grain warehouse and etc.) or the one side of the thin wall-shaped structure(e.g: steel bar concrete wall and etc.), both of which are intended to be demolished, inserted with the required solid medium (e.g: soil , sand , coal, salt and etc.) ,in which there is a certain mass density, and then through which the blasting energy is transferred to fulfill the blasting task. For such a technique, it is necessary to bury the explosives into the inserted solid medium and then to start the explosion to blast the intended target into pieces. The filling of the solid medium may be done mechanically or by man. Compared with the water pressure blasting technique, this one has the characteristics of good effect. wide application, simplified construction procedure , safe and reliable operation and small vibration (less vibration than water pressure blasting by 80% to 90%)in particular without any flying stones, thus resulting in better and comprehensive social and economickfficiency.

Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting. Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials in building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed with two sizes: 450×450×1800 mm and 600×300×1800 mm. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and nonwoven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of 16 and 17-story apartment buildings.

The 8-millisecond rule has been in use for many years as a basic technique to help minimize vibration levels from surface blasting operations. The rule was based on work carried out in the 1960’s by the USBM by recording the vibration levels from a series of test blasts in a quarry over a range of distances. This work included the firing of a series of single hole blasts and a number of single row production blasts using a variety of inter-hole delay times. The delay times employed were limited by the technology available at that time to instantaneous, 9, 17 and 34 milliseconds. There have been several papers in recent years suggesting that the use of the 8-millisecond rule is no longer required, when using electronic detonators, due to their enhanced accuracy and greater initiation pattern design flexibility. This paper examines this proposition by revisiting the original work and employing the linear superposition technique to reprocess some of the original recordings. Similar techniques are then applied to a large database of single hole vibration recordings for a range of rock types, distances, and number of decks, with calculated reinforcements compared to the minimum separations in typical patterns. The results suggest that there is some validity to the 8-millisecond rule when applied to electronic detonators but not in the way it is traditionally applied. Simple guidance is suggested for those designing blasts with electronic detonators to minimize vibration levels even if the benefits of linear superposition trials are not available.

Stockholm’s Northern Link, currently Europe’s largest urban road tunnel project, will be about 5 km long from west to east. Running through two separate, mostly parallel tunnels, each with 2-4 lanes, the complex will include numerous entries and exits, as well as a major branch to the north. The total length of tunnel will be 11 km, of which 9 km will be in rock. Over million m3 of rock will be blasted. The Northern Link will open to traffic in 2015. After a 10-year stop to deal with environmental questions regarding Ekoparken, Stockholm’s unique “national city park”, the Northern Link project in the Swedish capital was restarted in the autumn of 2006, with the construction of five works-access tunnels.

The Maumee Quarry, located in the city of Maumee, Ohio, has large in-situ cavities, ranging in size from 3 ft (.91 m) in diameter to over 15 ft (4.5 m). The drill/blast team challenge is to drill, load and shoot the geologically disturbed rock in a safe, cost efficient manner, while in close proximity to a commercial area. A continuous improvement process, managed by a Blast Optimization Team (BOT), was implemented to quantify the innovative explosive loading techniques that have been implemented. Borehole camera monitoring, modified loading practices, the need for accurate drill hole logging and open communications between the drill and blast crew proves critical to the success of the operation. Safe Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) have been developed and are strictly enforced for the drill/blast cycle. All blasts are monitored with seismographs and recorded on video to provide detailed information as part of the Blast Management Plan. Despite the geological challenges, the measurement of rock fragmentation index versus loader dig rates has provided near optimal crusher throughput.

This case centers around a construction job and involves a contractor, subcontractor/blaster, and a farmer/homeowner who lives near the job site. It is essentially a study of professional ethics versus morality, our professional code of conduct versus what is right or wrong.

Increased mineral consumption and environmental concern have caused much interest in potential damage and annoyance from ground vibration and airblast produced by production blasting in surface mines and quarries. Ground vibrations are traditionally blamed for "shaking the house to its foundations," but often the airblast is responsible, particularly when the distances from mine to structure are large. Simultaneous measurements of ground vibrations, structure vibrations, and indoor and outdoor noise from blasting are being used by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative importance of the ground and airborne blast energy in shaking the structure and making windows, dishes, etc., rattle.

Extensive blasting was required to construct an underground tunnel for a 90 inch sewerage relief line. The tunnel and required excavation extended under an upper middle-class residential area in Atlanta, Georgia for more than a mile and a half and required the use of more than a half million pounds of explosives in the immediate vicinity of houses and residential apartments valued at more than 16 million dollars. Other houses and property valued at more than 80 million dollars were within range to claim blasting damages. An effective blasting damage control program was carried out which limited the number of blasting damage claims to less than 2-1/2% of the total number of potential claims. All but three of the small number of blasting damage claims which were made were effectively denied without any resulting legal actions and less than $3,800 was paid for settlement of the three claims.

The thrust of this report is to overcome some of the technical deficiency in the scientific methodology that correlates the work output during a charge explosion to the resulting toxic fumes. Thermodynamic work-principle models yield (undissipated) shock and heave results for shooting underwater and in rock stratum with related toxic fumes. Underwater circumstances yield reliable test data for the work process, though questionable or no fume results. Work-output measurements in rock shots remain difficult if not intractable, though some fume reports exist. Underground tests with thick-wall metal pipe bombs yield consistent toxic fumes trapped within the test chamber. The work output, rendered as fragment kinetic energy, can be inferred from the well-tested theory of R. W. Gurney, originally designed for military ordinance. Therefore a work-principle model for cylindrical pipe bombs was developed to predict fragmentation work output and reaction-zone fumes, permitting the double comparisons to reported and inferred results.

Thunder, by itself, can't hurt anyone; it is simply hot air moving very fast. Thunder, however, is caused by lightning and lightning is what we need to fear and rightfully so. Annually, lightning kills hundreds of Americans, injures another 2,000, damages or destroys approximately 30,000 structures, 1 starts thousands of forest fires and strikes mine properties over 100,000 times.

Digitizing precision criteria for both peak velocity and analysis applications are given. Several methods for reconstructing signals from sampled data are presented.

In recent years significant advances have been made in chemical processing technology. In particular, process intensification using micro-technology has had some success in changing and improving chemical processes including mixing. Process Intensification is the miniaturization of unit operations and processes whereby a smaller compact piece of equipment takes the place of a larger one at the same given capacity or mass flow rate. This paper summarizes research into the application of the technology for manufacture of high internal phase water in oil ammonium nitrate emulsions (ANE’s) at low energy cost and with very low oil/fuel blend content. The emulsions can be used as precursors for preparation of explosives. The quality of the emulsion prepared was assessed through droplet and crystal analysis and compared with that of emulsions made by conventional large scale jet mixing technology.

The Lafarge Ravena Cement Plant in Ravena, New York demonstrated continuous and extraordinary improvement in productivity during the past several years. The factors driving continuous improvement at the Lafarge Ravena Plant include: 1) Management techniques including regular scheduled and effective Blasting Optimization Team meetings. 2) A real time blasting database to guide blasting product and procedure decisions. Key decisions involved all levels of quarry and blasting supplier personnel and a close working relationship between production and blasting areas of expertise was demonstrated. 3) Blast optimization and optimization of quarry operating parameters such as blast location relative to crusher location, hours worked, etc.

During the last several years the FBI has been involved with a detailed study of explosives designed to replicate formulations utilized world-wide by terrorists. In addition, numerous formulations , based on literature and internet sources were examined. During the early stages of this work, a good many of the energetic mixtures studied were based on simple ammonium nitrate fertilizer. While the use of ammonium nitrate in commercial explosives is well studied and documented, the characteristics of the mixtures produced by criminals and terrorists have been less well researched. To aid law-enforcement in understanding the properties of these poorly understood formulations, a “cradle to grave” examination of their characteristics was conducted.
