This project investigates the behavior of blast waves from the detonation of high explosives in an underground mine. A series of explosive tests was conducted in the underground and surface facilities at the Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the potentially dangerous effects of blast waves produced by open shooting, blown out holes, or accidental detonations of explosives. Shots of C4 and TNT were fired at the dead end of a 6 ft high by 20ft wide entry, at the intersection of two entries, and on the surface. C4 and TNT were chosen for this research because they exhibit very consistent performance. Behavior of the blast wave was evaluated through recording of the pressure as a function of distance from the explosive detonation.

Proper risk assessment and blast design are very desirable to the execution of a blast. Not only will this ensure that it achieves its desired outcome, but the probability of complaints and litigation will be reduced. Blasting engineers rely heavily on site-specific data for analysis and input to the blast design equations, and therefore data collection is critical to this process. The traditional approach to data collection is to carry out site-specific reconnaissance by visiting the site, but the time spent doing so can be reduced if a remote sensing approached is adopted.

This paper describes the technology and methods deployed in the continuous autonomous remote monitoring of cracks in interior and exterior walls of a residence near a limestone quarry. The objective is to quantitatively compare crack response due to blast-induced ground motion to that induced by diurnal temperature changes, weather fronts, occupant activity, and other phenomena. The remote monitoring and communication technology developed to obtain and disseminate crack response data for this study may provide the means to mitigate the effect of public concerns about potential impacts of ground vibrations inherent in construction and production of raw materials; it is critical to address these concerns because subsequent litigation may result in delays and increased costs.

The N1 Porto tunnel project is a 650m segment of large-scale civil engineering plan to improve traffic flow between Porto’s downtown district, the Santo Antonio hospital district and the highway access. The tunnel is being excavated into a massive “Granito do Porto” granite structure, 4 – 20m below a highly urbanized environment of Porto, Portugal. The project was originally started in 2000 and was stopped due to the inability to mechanically excavate the granite rock. The city of Porto engineers then turned to traditional drilling and blasting techniques. The use of pyrotechnical delay detonators did not easily comply with the specified environmental and safety requirements concerning blast charging, firing and vibration control resulting in the process taking far too much time. The introduction of digital blasting was proposed to overcome these concerns.

TIGERWIN, now on CD, is a user-friendly personal computer code (running under Windows) which determines the detonation and expansion state of an explosive from its known chemical composition. TIGERWIN is intended for users in the mining and commercial explosives industry who do not routinely program or run Fortran codes. The code allows the user to open a window on the computer screen and enter the initial density and the weight percentage composition of an explosive, ingredient by ingredient. Alternatively, the code can balance the composition with one or more ingredient percentages fixed, while proportionally adjusting the others automatically to give a total of 100%. The equation of state and its parameters can be user-selected from several proven and tested versions of the BKW, the JCZ, and the ideal gas equations of state. TIGERWIN allows the user to select several options for different additional calculations, such as determining the constant volume explosion, the Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) point, the detonation Hugoniot, the expansion isentrope from the C-J point, and point calculations with selectable specific volume and temperature. Additional options include calculations of detonation data with one or more ingredients partially reacted, assuming either temperature equilibrium between reaction products and unreacted material, or keeping the unreacted material “cold” at the initial temperature. Thus the code can run both ideal and non-ideal detonation calculations. The code automatically saves the input and output files in a separate directory for future reference. The output from several calculations can be displayed and printed in the form of a comparison table. In it, the key results of up to five calculations with different explosive compositions can be compared. The results from an individual calculation can be displayed graphically and printed with expansion work, pressure, or temperature as functions of specific volume. A complete listing of the details of the calculation results, similar to those from the original Fortran Tiger calculations, can also be displayed and printed. No computer experience is required to run the code and workshop participants are encouraged to bring in their own formulations to try out on TIGERWIN

As the first stage in the rulemaking process, MSHA prepared requirements for the approval and use of permissible explosives and blasting items in underground coal mines. These draft requirements known as "preproposals" were announced in the Federal Register in mid-1984. The draft requirements on the use of explosives were written as a revision to Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 75, Subpart N. The draft requirements for approval of permissible explosives including sheathed explosives for unconfined applications, approval of water stemming bags, approval of detonators and approval of blasting machines were prepared as Parts 15, 16, 17 and 25 respectively.

While controlling fly rock and ground vibration in quarrying in the neighborhood of a residential area, producing good fragmentation and keeping different grades of material separated in a muckpile are important in maintaining the productivity of quality aggregates. This paper describes a single row production blast for the study of fragmentation and displacement in the grade control carried out at a quarry of Barrett Paving Materials Inc. in Sylvania, Ohio. Digital video imaging was used to monitor the blast-induced motion of the bench face as input to the DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code), for the analysis of the formation of the muckpile. The actual digitized blast video and the DMC_Blast simulation are compared. The displacement and mixing of all the inter-bedded limestone layers are made visible in the simulated cross-section of the muckpile. The apparent fragmentation analysed with PowerSieve is also discussed.

A column of stemming material keeps explosion gases at high pressure for longer times in a blasthole. In general, use of appropriate stemming enables the achievement of the desired level of fragmentation and looseness of muckpiles, as well as the reduction of airblast and fly rock. The ejection resistance of a stemming column varies with the type of stemming material employed. In an effort to optimise stemming at Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, Australia, a trial was conducted to assess the efficiency of two types of stemming materials. Mt Owen mine relies on through seam blasting and stemming quality is important in this challenging blasting environment. Each type of stemming was trialed in different section of a blast. The blast was designed using Orica’s SurveyPlus@, LoadPlus@ and ShotPlus@ software. Measurement was done using high speed filming of the blast and then post blast information was obtained from analysis of the film. Data analysis included determination of the ejection velocities and percentage swell. Digging rates were measured from excavator production rates. Despite the presence of rounded surfaces and finer particle sizes, River Pebble stemming material showed superior ejection resistance. It also appeared to perform as well as more angular and expensive Crushed Stone, a finished quarry product, based on excavator productivity and heave. It was recommended that future blasts at the mine be stemmed with the River Pebble stemming material.

Time window techniques that limit the explosive charge mass being fired within a specified time window (commonly 8 milliseconds (ms)) have been used for many years and are widely accepted by explosives engineers. The 8 ms time window may be relevant for controlling ground vibration for small blasts at close quarters in a high frequency vibration environment. For controlling ground vibration from blasts in a low frequency vibration environment an 8 ms separation between blastholes is arbitrary and meaningless. The 8 ms time window was never intended as a means of controlling airblast. The use of time window techniques will, in many instances, result in airblast and ground vibration levels that are substantially greater than planned, with unfortunate outcomes. The uses of time windows that are inappropriate have been well explained in previous papers. This paper gives further examples of blast designs that satisfied time window considerations but have resulted in substantially greater airblast and ground vibration levels in certain directions, due to wavefront reinforcement or the combined effect of drilling pattern and delay sequence. Techniques that identify wavefront reinforcement, due to the combined effect of drilling pattern and delay sequence, can assist explosives engineers to avoid blast vibration problems that result from inappropriate time window techniques.

The explosives industry is about to reach a critical turning point in human resources. The average age of employees of the largest US explosives company is over 50 and an estimated 5,000 engineers are due to retire from the mining industry over the next decade, with less than 200 mining graduates per year nationally. Not just in the USA, this is a worldwide problem. In Canada the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MIHRC), reported that older mining engineers are retiring early – at the age of 59.5 on average. It predicts that mining companies will need to hire 370 mining engineers by 2016 and 665 by 2021. The Minerals Council of Australia has predicted the need for an additional 86,000 mining professionals and skilled mine workers by 2020, and the Indian mining industry is also facing a shortage of between 2,500 to 3,000 engineers per year.

In Stockholm a new road traffic system called Södra Länken (Southern Link) will be in operation in late 2004. The total length of the road system is 6 kilometres of which 4,5 kilometres run through tunnels under suburbs immediately south of Stockholm inner City. The new traffic tunnels together with existing Metro tunnels, which mostly are in rock, will be the determining factor for blast design for many projects in the future. To set reasonable and safe permitted vibration levels the Swedish National Road Administration, Stockholm Region and Stockholm Transport Rail System have together financed a project to determine guide levels for blast-induced vibrations in traffic tunnels in rock. The purpose of the project has been to establish guide levels that are appropriate for different types of rock tunnels.

With the promising development of new technologies, automation in Drill and Blasting (D&B) is on the horizon. The data generated in all D&B activities, which is currently segregated, can be linked to become information and carry a logical meaning. This information can be used to identify critical activities and make decisions regarding corrective measures to accomplish the goals of D&B. Minera Caserones, supporting Alert2Gain (A2G), and Dyno Nobel, has been working on the development of a quality assurance and quality control (QAQC), system for the mine involving all D&B activities. The main variables in the model for D&B include data from the geology of the deposit, drilling, explosive products, and material loading, among others. To create the model, the mine is divided into blasting polygons. Those polygons are part of a block model. The block model is assembled following different rules, such as: • Block sizes of 4m x 4m x 15m, • Classification of the blocks to a particular blasting polygon using a geospatial intersection algorithm, • Algorithms connect all the pieces of data automatically with the minimum of human intervention and populate the block model, Because measuring data for each block is impossible, another set of rules and algorithms completes the model. Dyno Nobel generates an essential set of data for the QAQC system. Explosive truck loading rates and explosive products, among other data, are also included in the system. The system autogenerates reports every hour, and a summary of the results of each mining day (a mining shift of 12 hours) is distributed by email to all responsible persons to identify the critical tasks and then to make the proper adjustments to accomplish the goals of D&B. The information is updated every hour and available through a dashboard for easy and straightforward interpretation. This paper explains the conceptual details of the QAQC system implemented in Minera Caserones, how the data is aggregated automatically from the different sources, shows examples of the type of information in the dashboard, and presents a successful case where a deviation was detected, and the corrective measures that were implemented to keep the performance of the D&B activity. The paper finally discusses the next steps toward an autonomous D&B system based on new AI technologies, with minimum human intervention.

Using the Scaled Distance (SD) and the vector sum Peak Particle Velocity (PPVvs) from a single delay, preferably single blasthole, in a shot, a number is derived which has shown itself to be consistently related to blasting efficiency, as experienced by one of the authors of this paper over the last thirty years. The numbers derived by this process range in value over one order of magnitude more or less. This variation, a function of distance, weight of explosive in the delay, blasthole diameter, blast design, powder factor and the geological environment, can be consistently related to two of these factors, powder factor and distance. In actual use the measured "BED" representing good blasting results should not vary by more than + 33 to + 50 percent of the estimated "BED" in non calibrated cases, and + 10 to 20 percent where previous experience is available. Relatively high "BED" values are indicative of poor blasting results while relatively low "BED" values may be precursors of poor blasting results in a shot. There are many variables in the geological environment which can affect the "BED". A case study is presented from a surface coal mining operation in eastern Canada. This case study tries to evaluate the reasons for the variability in "BED" values derived from multi-hole shots. A problem in using "Signature Vibrations" from a single-hole shot to predict blasting vibrations from multiple-hole production shots is identified.

The King George V (KGV) Shaft forms part of MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) Works Contract 703 extension of the underground West Island Line on Hong Kong Island. The Shaft and the associated adit was the sole access to excavate the running tunnels. Originally during the Detailed Design stage, it was concluded that blasting was not feasible at the KGV Shaft due to the close proximity of sensitive receivers in the form of residential buildings, electrical cables and hospitals. As a result, the Contractor planned to excavate the Shaft using mechanical means with a programme time of seven months. The Contractor appointed a Sub-contractor to analyse the feasibility of excavating the Shaft by blasting. The Sub-contractor reviewed the proposal and recommended the use of an innovative blasting technique that had never been previously employed in Hong Kong. The Sub-contractor recommended the Shaft be blasted using DetNet electronic delay detonator technology, manufactured by AEL Mining Services in South Africa, with an initial 1.5m depth of water ballast covering the blast face. The electronic delay detonators provided initiation accuracy to ensure there would be no overlap between sequentially detonating blastholes. The water ballast makes use of the effect of energy lost through the shock front causing the water to break up into droplets creating a spray dome resulting in the attenuation of the energy imparted into the surrounding rock mass. Various tests have demonstrated that both the maximum overpressure and impulse density are significantly reduced when water of a minimum depth is in direct contact with detonating explosives. This innovative blasting technique reduced the excavation programme by three months, saved HK$5 million in direct costs and totally mitigated the impacts on the public and other stakeholders nearby the KGV Shaft. Peak Particle Velocities (vibrations) rarely exceeded 2-3mm/sec (0.08-0.12in/sec) at a distance of 30-40m (98-131ft) from the blast location and air overpressure levels were reduced below the Hong Kong target level of 120dBL. In total, 24 blasts were fired with an average advance of 1.6m (5.25ft) with an average powder factor of 2.03kg/m3 (0.127lb/ft3) to 1.84 kg/m3 (0.114lb/ft3). The initiation pattern had 5ms between sequentially detonating blastholes and 20ms between adjoining rings.

On May 14, 2011 a chimney blast took place in Vienna, Austria. The blasting operation was part of the demolition works at a former railway fabrication. The demolition works on this ground were done under the leadership of the Austrian construction and demolition company PORR. In agreement with the civil organizations which were involved, the commander of the Regional Military Command of Vienna, Brigadier general Dr. Karl SCHMIDSEDER ordered a reserve force engineer company to demolish the chimney. The concrete planning of the chimney blasting was done by specialist Markus SEWALD who belongs to the HEERESTRUPPENSCHULE (combined armed force school) of the Austrian armed forces.

The paper discusses procedures used in estimating pre-bid cost; in particular, drilling and blasting cost for highways, dams and general construction projects.
