A discrete element computer program, DMC (Distinct Motion Code) was developed to simulate blast-induced rock motion. To simplify the complex task of entering material and explosive design parameters as well as bench configuration, a full-featured graphical interface has been developed. DMC is currently executed on both Sun SPARCstation 2 and Sun SPARCstation 10 platforms and routinely used to model bench and crater blasting problems.

Based on the analysis of problems with wall control blasts in open pits, the essential theoretical basis and technological design of the damping presplit blasts are put forward. After practical application of this method in Nanfen Open Pit China, very good results have been achieved: 1) The rate of decreased vibration is up to 40%; and 2) The damage area of slope is reduced about 60%.

While it is easy to state that meaningful involvement of the community can play a critical role for a successful blasting operation, following through with this involvement is not an easy task. Structured Public Involvement (SPI) is a developed protocol for involving communities in project planning decisions and could be readily applied to the blasting industry. SPI was developed for the purpose of collecting quality public input about public transportation projects. The purpose of SPI is to bring about stakeholder satisfaction with potential projects by allowing controlled input from the stakeholders. It was designed and intended for democratic societies that have come to expect a voice in public projects. While blasting operations are not always in the domain of public projects, the fundamental process outlined by SPI can be useful for collecting feedback from the immediate public around blasting operations.

Four years ago, Peabody’s North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM) site started experimenting withANFO and Liners in its Cast Blasting operations. The motivation to use ANFO was based on the following:1. ANFO generates more gas thereby resulting in greater heave/movement. 2. ANFO is a more consistent product because there are less components/ingredients. 3. ANFO when protected from water contamination does not produce NOx smoke.

he Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) supplies water to some 16 million people in a semi-arid region. Most of this water is imported. Some of the supply lines cross over the San Andreas fault, one of the most notorious and active faults in the U.S. There was a serious need for emergency water in case normal supplies should be interrupted. To fill that need, MWD had to find a reservoir site on the west side of the San Andreas fault, west of the mountains. Because of the distinctive nature of the location, it was necessary to construct a huge “bath tub” by building a dam at each end of a valley, requiring some 115 million cubic yards (88 million cu.m) of fill. In effect, two large-scale surface mining operations have been under way simultaneously. The $2.2 billion project is known as the Eastside Reservoir Project. Because of space limitations, this paper will be limited to those topics which are expected to be of primary interest to explosives engineers, principally related to large-scale rock fill production. There is not sufficient space to discuss the many diverse geotechnical questions related to site selection, geological and geophysical field testing, laboratory testing and design considerations. This brief overview may assist those who might be interested in making a tour of the project site following the ISEE conference.

The purpose of the project was two fold: 1. To determine whether Pyrodex, a propellant, manufactured by the Hodgdon Powder Company, could be used as a substitute for high explosives for presplitting in granite and other materials. 2. To determine if Pyrodex, a slow reacting propellant which produces no stress waves in rock because it reacts subsonically, could cause the rock to crack similar to the results achieved with high explosives.

Because of the marked human response to blast effects and inherent defects present in many modern structures the real possibility of being named as a defendant in a law suit faces most blasters. Until recently even frivolous law suits involved a great deal of expense since legal costs were inevitably incurred whilst waiting for your day in court, which typically occurred some 2-4 years after the alleged damage took place.

Rock particle sizes were measured at fourteen steep-slope Appalachian coal mines during production blasting. The distribution of rock sizes shows the effects of inter-hole timing, sequence of hole initiation, as well as charge distribution within each shot. Blast design parameters were selected to: (1) minimize displacement of broken rock conforming to throw control required of mining methods, (2) minimize seismic effects, and (3) create breakage at a cost economical to mining operations.

The United Kingdom, although a relatively small island, has a wealth of mineral deposits, coal, granite, limestone, gypsum, lead, florspar, etc. Coal is a major source of energy with 71 opencast coal sites, 52 using explosives. Many of these sites are in rural areas, the average area worked being 250 acres. The smallest is 35 acres, the largest 2,000 acres, but only 600 acres can be operated at any one time.

The excavation of large amounts of ferrous and non ferrous metals, coal, shale, and other minerals - requires intensification of blasting techniques. In the late 80s in the USSR, the annual consumption of explosives reached more than 2.7 ml t., the great bulk of which consisted of granulated and powdery explosives. Nevertheless, slurry explosives, due to lower costs and better blasting characteristics, are gaining a stronger position in the explosives market.

(2) H.D. NONEL PRIMADETS - A rugged model of the underground unit designed primarily for use in quarries, coal strips, and open pit mines.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is responsible for the regulation and enforcement of the explosives laws codified in the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970, Title XI. To meet its responsibilities ATF has special agents, inspectors and specialists who regularly interact with the explosives industry. However, with just over 2,000 special agents and 800 inspectors and specialists, it is difficult to visit the almost 10,000 explosives licensees and permittees in the United States.

A method for safe fracture of rock, concrete and other brittle solid material using dynamic water pressure by explosion is provided. The propagation of the pressure is studied with Allievi water hammer theory. Wave equation and velocity formulas of the pressure propagation are shown. The dynamic water pressure is tested in the lab. The propagation of the pressure is simulated by MMIC-2D. The results of fracturing rock in the lab and on a quarry are presented.

Researchers in the field of blasting have been trying to develop ways of predicting fragmentation in the last few decades. The Kuznetsov equation estimates the average fragment size, XJ~, based on explosive energy and powder factors. Cunningham calculates the uniformity of a fragment size distribution using drilling accuracy, blast geometry and a rock factor A associated with a “blastability index”, which can be estimated from the jointing, density and hardness of the blasted rock mass. Knowing the mean size and the uniformity index, a Rosin-Rammler distribution equation can then be derived for calculating the fragment size distribution in a blasted muckpile. Analysis of existing data has revealed serious discrepancies between actual and calculated uniformity indices. The current integrated approach combines the Kuznetsov or similar equation and a comminution concept like the Bond Index equation to enable the estimation of both the 50% and SOoh passing sizes (X& and X& ). By substituting these two passing sizes into the Rosin-Rammler equation, the characteristic size (Xc ) and the uniformity index (n) can be obtained to allow the calculation of various fragment sizes in a given blast. The effectiveness of this new fragmentation prediction approach has been tested using sieved data from small-scale bench blasts, available in the literature. This paper will cover all tested results and a discussion on the discrepancy between measurement and prediction due to possible energy loss during blasting.

New technology in video equipment, such as Super Video Tapes, Super Video Camera Recorders equipped with high speed electronic shutters, and VCR's with editing capabilities make it possible to resolve high speed events to still frames with an event elapsed time of 17 milliseconds (ms). This is far from the 2 ms resolution available with a High Speed 16 mm Film Camera such as the LOCAM at its maximum 500 frame persecond speed, but is adequate for many field blast evaluations.

O & G Industries, Inc. owns and operates a number of rock quarries within the State of Connecticut. These rock quarries are surrounded by residences and commercial neighbors who have concerns related to blasting. In addition, local commissions which issue the mining permits to O & G are required to hold public hearings, prior to issuing the annual permits each year.

Blasting is usually required to produce easily-excavated broken rock, while leaving surrounding rock masses as undamaged and stable as possible. In mining applications, it is common to utilise production blasting in the centre of an open pit, and specially developed limits blast designs when blasting adjacent to the excavation perimeter. In open pit blasting, limits blast designs generally include pre-splitting, trim blasts, or buffer blasts, all of which are designed to limit, or eliminate, damage beyond the designed pit wall. This paper reports on the findings of a study of the profile of damage in rock masses surrounding blasts, determined by a combination of vibration monitoring, displacement monitoring using extensometers, and video inspection of open holes drilled at various distances behind blasts. The results obtained suggest that the profile of damage may extend for the full depth of the bench, for distances of up to 12 to 15 metres behind blasts. This suggests that entire berms may be affected by blasting, displaying loss of friction and cohesion along joint and fracture planes. The study has considered production blasts and trim blasts with small diameter blastholes and pre-splits.
