The original JKMRC AG/SAG mill model was developed over 30 years ago and has been upgraded a number of times since then, with the current published version being the Variable Rates model that is now over 15 years old. Since this model was developed further enhancements have been derived, some of which are applied in-house and some which have yet to be incorporated. The published and the commercially available model in JKSimMet is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul with a vastly extended data base for model evolution and validation. Improvements developed within the AMIRA P9 project, in-house development and a number of collaborative projects, are being incorporated into the upgraded model structure. Enhanced capabilities will include: power-based breakage rates scaling; a far wider mill filling range (from 10% to 40%) that exhibits peak in throughput as mill filling increases; higher ball loads; improved pebble discharge function; improved slurry discharge function incorporating important mill design and operational influences; and the new size dependent breakage function. The model will also be able to accommodate some influence of liner design and multi-component ores (blends of hard and soft components). This upgrade is still a work in progress but substantial changes have been made to date. This paper presents some of the new improvements and their influence on the predictive capability of the model.

A series of small scale tests have been conducted to evaluate the effect of micro-fracture development, imposed by blasting, on the material properties of the rock as well as its resistance to crushing and grinding. The uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, Poisson?s ratio, P-wave, Swave velocity, point load test index, crushing and grinding work indices were evaluated for samples without any blasting load and for samples which had received a variety of blast loads ranging from a single impact with low strength detonating cord, to combination of impacts at different times and significant impacts with powder factors close to those used in practical blasts. It was shown that the rock mechanics parameters change even at low impacts, suggesting easier crushing of the rock. Damage values appear to be affected by timing as stress wave superposition affects the damage process. Fragmentation is achieved at higher impact levels while work index modification of the fragments is also observed when high powder factors are used, suggesting improvements in grinding.

For mine sites affected by acid rock drainage (ARD) or with a potential future ARD issue, the prime consideration is not only the classification of different waste rock as potentially acid forming or non acid forming but also the peak acid (and metal) release rates and expected ARD duration during which effective ARD management and acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) are required. Methods for assessment of this ANC (e.g., Sobek tests) are already available but can be unreliable in ARD containing significant proportions of framboidal pyrite or iron carbonates. The measurement of negative ANC values and the release of S to solution showed that significant sulfide oxidation may occur prior to and during testing in samples containing reactive (particularly framboidal) pyrite resulting in serious underestimation of the original ANC. A simple methodology with dissolution in Ar-purged water before ANC testing, removing ferrous salts, and sulfate assay after ANC testing corrects these effects. Results also showed that a significant lag period (up to 432 h) may be needed for complete hydrolysis of Fe associated with the standard Sobek ANC testing of, for instance, siderite. Hence, the ANC of iron carbonates is usually significantly overestimated. By filtering and the addition of H202 until there was no subsequent pH drop (due to Fe hydrolysis reactions), followed by back titration to pH 7.0, the ANC for siderite was similar to the ANC determined after 432 h lag by the Modified Sobek ANC test and to the mineralogical carbonate ANCcarb determined by calculation based on electron probe micro-analysis. A chemical ANC calculation, based on neutralising cations released to solution, has provided a method to quantify the short-term ANC of carbonates and silicates in simple mixed mineral assemblages and waste rock samples. Results showed that silicate ANC can be more important in short-term neutralisation than carbonate ANC in low carbonate samples. In the longer-term, decreasing sulfate and metal loads with increasing pH values suggests that eventually sulfide acidity generation rates will match the longer-term inherent acid neutralisation rates of the sample derived from silicates. A kinetic ANC measurement for silicates, after steady state dissolution is reached, that indicates the number of hydrogen ions neutralised/m2/yr has been developed. These values can be used in estimates of the net acid production profile from wastes with low (and decreasing) pyrite content after the short-term ANC is exhausted.

Dispatch systems have been used for open pit mining since the early 1980?s but similar systems do not widely exist for underground mining. There is a need for developing dispatch systems for underground mines, particularly highly automated operations such as block caving. An innovative method, Agent Based Modeling (ABM) for a dispatch system for a block caving operation, is proposed in this paper. The model is based on a particular behaviour observed in social insects. The focus of the ABM dispatch system is adaptability with respect to changing operational conditions and effective integration of maintenance modules with the operation. The paper will show the advantages of this innovative method compared to existing similar systems. Introduction During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in the mapping of major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to one inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately. The information regarding faults and structure is so widely scattered that it is difficult to obtain a clear picture of the essential features, either for planned prospecting or for analysis and development of ideas for further study. This paper, as originally conceived, was intended only to discuss and compare the regional structure of southern Abitibi county-where detail mapping and diamond drilling have been carried on intensively for the past ten years-and of the less well-known Chibougamau district, in order that the experience gained in the one area could be usefully applied in the other. However, a comparison of the two districts leads naturally to a consideration of their common relationship to certain major late-Precambrian structures that form an important northeast system across the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield.

This paper reviews a pilot project that developed a system to electronically collect that data. The benefits and improvements in data accuracy, timeliness and reduction in collection effort, will be discussed. Technological issues that arose from the use of WiFi, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and the IREDES mine data equipment standard are also discussed.

"LOCATIONThe mine and mill are located in Lemoine township which is 20 miles directly south-east of the town of Chibougamau Quebec. Personnel live in Chibougamau and commute to the property over 33 miles of paved and gravel roads. Concentrates are trucked 13 miles to a railway siding on the line connecting Chibougamau and Quebec city.HISTORY Several companies explored the property before acquisition by Patino Mines (Quebec) Limited in 1973. Further exploration led to the discovery of a high grade copper-zinc orebody and the property was brought into production by the above company in 1976.ORE The ore contains 85% - 95% sulphides consisting of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor gold and silver. Argenti tetrahedrite, antimonial silver, native bismuth and galena are also pre sent in very minor quantities. Associated gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and occasionally chlorite."

Drawing on past research experience with sprayable polymer mine support agents (TSLs), Spray On Plastics Ltd. has developed a TSL ground support system called RockWeb. Using a relatively new polyurea polymer technology, RockWeb has been engineered to solve problems encountered underground with polyurethane liners by incorporating rapid curing, moisture insensitivity and superior physical performance. RockWeb possesses a unique, patented ability to be sprayed in a ?cobweb? like consistency allowing the applicator to span fissures in the rock, ensuring no initial defects in the liner, and maintaining design thickness over highly irregular surfaces. This ability, coupled with the high strength and elasticity of polyurea, allows RockWeb to mitigate rock movement through yielding, while maintaining intimate surface confinement. RockWeb provides reduction in logistics through the transport of 1/25 of the material quantities required for shotcrete, rapid deployment rates of as little as 30 minutes per round, and immediate return to the work area. This paper will discuss the technology and advantages of RockWeb as well as opportunities for overall mining cycle cost reduction. The safety benefits, as well as health and environmental considerations regarding application of isocyanate-based liners will also be discussed.

"The basis of the tomographic velocity imaging technique is briefly described and an application of the method to detect and image a cross-section through a chromite pod is presented. Using the chromite application as an example, the relative costs of tomographic data acquisition and processing are compared with those of diamond drilling to obtain similar resolution. A number of different tomographic survey configurations and the potential role of the method in surface and underground exploration are discussed.IntroductionThe technique of seismic tomography has been most widely applied in oil industry exploration, nuclear waste disposal, civil engineering site investigations and in the assessment of the condition of mass concrete structures. The speed of sound is determined by the physical characteristics of the medium through which it is passing. In geophysics the speed of sound is generally referred to as the seismic velocity. Due to variations in the formations of different rocks the seismic velocity will vary and so can be used to map geological boundaries"

"For many years, rejection of pyrrhotite at the milling stage has been a viable method for sulphur dioxide abatement. Pyrrhotite rejection options have included the use of selective pyrrhotite depressants in flotation; a depressant which has recently come into use is diethylenetriamine (DETA). This reagent has been the subject of recent research and development efforts in the processing of nickel-copper sulphide ores.In the present study, adsorption trends for DETA have been monitored under the dynamic conditions of flotation using a spectrophotometric method which has been adopted for this purpose at Falconbridge Limited. The results indicate that the adsorption of DETA is quite fast and in the majority of cases, accounts for the disappearance of 75-95 % of this reagent from pulp's liquid phase. The adsorption decreases linearly with an increase in the DET A dosage from 100 git to 600 git. The tailings produced in flotation tests were subjected to washing with deionized water at 60 °C to examine the desorption of DET A. These results indicate that the amount desorbed increases with increasing DETA dosage used during flotation but is less than 7 per cent of that adsorbed. It was found that adsorption of DETA alone, even at relatively high levels, does not always cause depression of pyrrhotite. A new combination of reagents identified in the metallurgical laboratories of Falconbridge Limited utilizes sulphur dioxide with DETA. These reagents together are capable of efficient depression of pyrrhotite on a consistent basis."

"This paper describes a process that can provide high rates of dewatering and that has the potential of bringing significant savings in tailing disposal costs. It involves a three-stage, closed-circuit operation employing a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener. The mill tailing, with adjusted pulp density, is first fed to the hydrocyclone. The underflow from the hydrocyclone goes to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflows from the hydrocyclone and the settling cone are sent to a thickener which, with the addition of a flocculant, gives a clear liquid effluent and a dilute underflow which is recycled back to the hydrocyclone. The underflow of the settling cone is a material with as high as 78% pulp density and is suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings and forms an additional cost item in milling operations. Cost-cutting measures are therefore desirable in this area as in any other stage of milling. One way of achieving this is through increased rate of dewatering which would require smaller dewatering units with correspondingly lower capital and operating costs."

"Extraction of Gold in Ketone from a suitably prepared sample of sulphide or siliceous ore or concentrate permits a rapid and accurate determination by Atomic Absorption. Mill test products and exploration development samples are acid-treated to effect complete dissolution of silver, copper, zinc, lead, molybdenum and iron present. Interferences in the determination of molybdenum are described. Results by Atomic Absorption are comparable to those afforded by other acceptable methods.INTRODUCTIONDuring recent years much has been written and discussed concerning Atomic Absorption Spectrometry as a technique for determining the concentration of metallic elements. We would, however, recommend a perusal of the paper presented by J. C. Ingles at the annual meeting of Canadian Gold Metallurgists held in Ottawa, January, 1966. The paper was published in the August, 1966, issue of the Canadian Mining Journal, and contains general information on Atomic Absorption.The purpose of our paper is to present certain specific method procedures for the determination of several precious and base metals normally present in Mine, Mill and Smelter products. Of necessity, analytical results should be as accurate as the most suitable available method permits, whether for metallurgical balance, settlement purpose, ore beneficiation programs, or exploration property development. The success of such programs is relative to the accuracy, speed and economics of the analysis. The processing of a bulk concentrate containing copper as chalcocite, enargite, bornite and chalcopyrite along with pyrite and precious metals of silver and gold was studied. A leaching study was undertaken to examine the application of the atmospheric acid leaching process to a bulk copper concentrate for copper recovery followed by cyanidation or thiosulfate leaching for gold and silver recovery. The extraction of copper exceeded 90% under some conditions and the recovery of gold and silver reached a maximum of 44 and 45%, respectively. A sample of bulk concentrate was roasted in air to oxidize the sulfides with release of sulfur dioxide followed by acid leaching of the roaster calcine and cyanidation of the acid leach solution. The copper extraction reached over 92% and the gold extraction exceeded 88%. The sulfur dioxide may be captured for acid production. INTRODUCTION The processing of a large primary copper deposit in Indonesia is under investigation. One of the possible routes for processing involves flotation of a bulk copper-gold concentrate followed by treatment by an atmospheric leach/SX-EW process for copper recovery. The atmospheric leach residue would then be leached for recovery of gold and silver. A second route involves roasting of the concentrate followed by acid leaching and SX-EW for copper recovery. The leach residue from the roaster calcine would then be leached for recovery of gold and silver. The roaster off-gases could be used for sulfuric acid manufacture, enabling the production of a valuable by-product. The Cobre Las Cruces (CLC) process (Munoz, Garcia, & Delgado, 2017) was designed to treat a resource of copper discovered close to Seville, Spain. The process was developed by Outotec with MK Gold (original project owner). INMET Mining subsequently purchased the deposit from MK Gold and built the copper processing facility. The CLC process is similar to the Mt. Gordon Copper process; except that OKTOP reactors have been installed instead of a low temperature, low pressure autoclave process. The plant was designed to treat 1.3 mtpa of ore at a grade of 6.2% Cu to produce 72,000 tpa of cathode copper over a 15 year project life. The main gangue mineral at Cobre Las Cruces was pyrite. The Cobre Las Cruces ore is therefore similar to a rougher flotation concentrate containing copper minerals and pyrite. The roasting of a rougher flotation concentrate can be designed to produce hematite, basic copper oxides and sulfur dioxide off gas. The acid leaching of the basic copper oxides may produce soluble copper for SX-EW recovery of copper. The sulfur dioxide off-gas may be used to make sulfuric acid.

"Abstract - The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filing and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentaryfaults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are comnmon minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REEs) profiles and high field strength elements (HFSEs) in rocks and minerals represent important tracers of geological processes. Of these the birdwing-shaped profile with negatively-sloped light REE ((La/Sm)N >1), positively-sloped heavy REE ((Tb/Yb)N <1), and strong negative Eu anomalies is commonly associated with large-scale hydrothermal systems or granitic intrusions. In a different way, severe deviation of Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios from those of chondrite may also indicate hydrothermal signatures in the rocks involved as these ratios are generally stable and chondritic in normal magmatism as a result of their nearly identical ionic radii and charge. In this study, we present a typical setting where birdwing-shaped REE profiles together with Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios unusually higher than those of chondrite, are systematically developed in a series of garnetite, quartzofeldspathic gneiss, Fe- or Mg-rich aluminous gneiss, and sulfides and magnetite. These units and associated Cu-Au mineralization form a VHMS-style hydrothermal system in the granulite-facies 1.4 Ga -1.35 Ga volcano-plutonic, arc-related Bondy gneiss complex (BGC), western Grenville Province, Canada. Outside the recognized hydrothermal system of the BGC, such REE profiles are not observed. Instead the surrounding felsic and mafic gneisses display primary trace element characteristics of island-arc magmas, suggesting that granulitefacies metamorphism did not modify significantly the trace element signatures of the protoliths. Although magmatic fractionation of accessory minerals can produce birdwing-shaped profiles, it cannot explain the extreme fractionation of isovalent trace elements (Nb-Ta) and the high Zr content of the hydrothermal rocks. Neither is it compatible with the lack of significant Nd depletion that would normally incur during this process. Following our study, we demonstrate that F-rich fluid and mineral phases enriched in LREEs and HREEs respectively must have been involved in the main hydrothermal alteration and REE fractionation process in the BGC. Preferential removal of REEs from the interstitial glass of the volcanic protoliths together with dissolution of plagioclase and subsequent external influx of HREEs and HFSEs can produce birdwing-shaped REE profiles. In turn, such profiles and/or unusual Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios can be used as a sensitive marker of hydrothermally altered rocks in targeting mineral exploration.

In contrast wavelength dispersive analysers apply high voltage x-ray tubes to provide primary x-rays and utilize crystals to disperse and thereby separate x-rays generated by bombardment of the sample."
