Sulfuric acid has been demonstrated to be an efficient lixiviant for in situ extraction of copper in the past. It has also been proposed that microbial production (by iron-oxidizing acidophilic bacteria) of acidic ferric solution either in situ or ex situ could provide an economic strategy to generate an effective lixiviant for secondary copper sulfides like chalcocite and covellite. Copper heap bioleaching also takes advantage of this approach. One of the major environmental challenges for in situ copper recovery projects is the containment of acidic solution within the ore deposit, and ultimate restoration of the depleted ore body to its original state. A perhaps overlooked aspect of projected site operations is the possibility that transient acidic conditions and pumping of solutions from surface reservoirs into the subsurface could stimulate the growth of iron- or sulfur-oxidizing species of acidophilic microbes in the ore body, leading to additional generation of sulfate, acid, and ferric iron. This outcome would benefit extraction of copper in mixed oxide/sulfide deposits in the near term, but could complicate restoration activities. Possible impacts of pumping acidic solutions into the subsurface on microbes resident in, or introduced into the extraction zone will be discussed in the context of our understanding of copper heap bioleaching and acid rock drainage. INTRODUCTION As high-grade deposits of metals such as copper continue to decline, conventional mining methods have evolved to mine and process larger and larger quantities of ore. What is currently defined as ore today often contains less metal than the tailings of past operations. The throughput of current-day mines also leads to tremendous amounts of waste rock and tailings that may threaten the environment and communities around the mines, as has recently been experienced by 3 major tailings disposal facility (TSF) dam failures in the past 5 years. Community acceptance of large mine operations thus becomes more difficult to achieve—loss of the social license to operate. In response, the mining industry urgently pursues innovations that can fundamentally change the way in which metals are mined. In situ recovery (ISR) of metals represents one approach to a more sustainable mining industry, by virtually eliminating the need for a pit or underground excavation, eliminating the excavation and transportation of ore to a process plant and the ensuing noise and dust that is generated, and any need for waste rock dumps or TSFs. An ISR mine could have very little visible footprint beyond a network of wells, pumps, and piping to transport pregnant solution to a recovery facility, such as a solvent extraction- electrowinning (SX-EW) plant for copper. Some solid waste streams and/or storage ponds may still be necessary to treat and store bleed streams, PLS and raffinate, or as part of groundwater restoration activities. Thus capital and operating investments would be potentially much lower than that required for a conventional mine. In theory production could also be controlled to adjust to subsurface ore grade and match market demand. A not insignificant challenge of in situ recovery is the requirement for an efficient, low-toxicity, and ideally selective lixiviant for the metal that is targeted.

"Gearless mill drives (GMDs) are the workhorse in the mineral processing industries, more specifically when it comes to grinding crushed ore and cement (in various production stages) in semiautogenous (SAG) mills and large ball mills. They are renowned for their excellent reliability and robustness, long lifespan, and little need for maintenance, and thus yield a low total cost of ownership (TCO).A GMD represents a major investment for a mineral processing plant, and its availability is pivotal for the grinding process. As a basic rule, shut-down periods are to be minimized, but even much more important is that unscheduled shut-downs be avoided. In this contribution, we will present a portfolio of innovative remote diagnostic that consist of the following three key components:1. Trouble shooting is a form of corrective maintenance and is based on state-of-the art remote access technology, thus enabling highly skilled engineers to access the current sensor readings anytime and from anywhere in order to resolve urgent problems together with the GMD user.2. Periodic maintenance reports are a form of preventive and predictive maintenance and aim at continuous improvement based on long-term historical records and analyses of multiple measured signals. These detailed reports highlight the health and operational status of the GMD and are periodically (e.g. 3 months) submitted to the customer.3. Remote condition monitoring spans across preventive and predictive maintenance and is based on continuous recording and automatic analyses of relevant signals using advanced algorithms. The main issue is how to handle the enormous flood of data in an intelligent manner. The results of these analyses are made available to both the GMD user and supplier in real time in order to increase the availability and reliability of the GMD.In this paper, we consider various parts of the GMD, e.g. the cycloconverter, the ring motor, the auxiliary devices (e.g. cooling and lubrication systems), and also phenomena related to the mill itself (e.g. state and quantity of charge). The signal analysis techniques range from simple threshold-based analyses to complex time and frequency domain analyses. We will illustrate the benefits of the proposed approaches with some selected examples."

Abstract-Ghana, a major West African gold-producing country, took a crucial step in 1986 to allow private participation in mining ventures that had hitherto been state controlled and starved of funds. This decision has led to a three-fold rise in gold production with substantial local and foreign capital once again flowing into exploration and mining projects. Though the rise in gold export is due primarily to increased production from large mines such as Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Billiton Bogosu Gold, Tebrebie Goldfields and Ghana Australia Gold that work primary lode gold deposits on quartz veins and Banket conglomerates, a fair amount of gold comes from placer gold mining from which two new mines have been developed at Kwabeng and Bonte during the current gold boom. Also, placer gold mining is important locally because the lower capital outlay required for its development enables many entrepreneurs to operate small concessions and provide employment for a large pool of unskilled labor. Placer gold exploration and development in Ghana is labor-intensive. Pitting is the most used method although few employ the mechanized ("Banka") drilling. The advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches in the local setting are discussed. The gravel is normally sluiced and the gold recovered by amalgamation. The drawbacks to successful placer gold exploration in Ghana have been attributed to lapses in execution of exploration programs (Dzigbodi- Adjimah and Arhin, 1993; Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Gawu, 1994). However, the failure to recognize and set time frameworks and financial limitations for the various stages of placer gold exploration have spelt the doom of some projects. It is critical that the characteristics of the placer gold deposit be determined by efficient and cost effective means. A planned exploration supported by adequate flow of funds saves costs and leads to success. This article discusses the current Ghanaian situation and presents proposals from case studies for planning and budgeting placer gold exploration programs for use in similar settings.

The energy systems of the future will be highly renewable. The flexibility that is consequently required can be provided with many options, the main ones being energy storage, transmission reinforcement, and demand side management. The role of the latter is explored for the copper industry, using the scheduling of maintenance services as an example of Solar-Paced Design - the coupling of energy demand with solar resource availability. We used a linear energy optimization model to define the minimum-cost configuration for a fully renewable energy system of a copper concentration plant under different scenarios for the scheduling of maintenance services. For the case we studied, (total) costs were 4% lower when the maintenance was scheduled in winter. We expect that exploring the potential of such Solar-Paced Design in the copper industry will allow new potentials for a more cost-effective full renewable energy supply of this critical industry. INTRODUCTION The mitigation of climate change requires a worldwide transformation of the energy system by the significant expansion of renewable energies and the electrification of various sectors and processes (Teske et al., 2015)(International Energy Agency IEA, 2018). Moreover, considering the decreasing costs of renewable energy technologies and the intensive use required to deliver the goals in the Paris Agreement, we can expect to have highly renewable energy systems in the near future. However, to rebuild and expand our energy systems, we need certain materials, including copper. Also, energy systems based on renewables are more copper-intensive than conventional ones (Kleijn, van der Voet, Kramer, van Oers, & van der Giesen, 2011). The mineral industry, in turn, needs clean energy to achieve a better environmental performance (e.g. solar energy for copper production (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017)) and to avoid negative secondary effects induced by the strong expansion of clean technologies. But there is something else the minerals industry can offer in this bi-directional relation with energy systems.

"The past several decades have seen a steady increase in the use of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) in underground mines as sensor technology has advanced and costs for this technology have decreased. The AMS is a reliable tool for early mine fire warning by detecting gaseous products of combustion in underground mines. During a mine fire emergency, mine decision makers rely heavily on the prompt and accurate knowledge of the ventilation and fire situation in the mine, such as fire location, fire size, and the spread of smoke to make effective and efficient decisions on firefighting strategies and miner evacuation. Meanwhile, a prediction of the potential for fire development at a later time, such as whether the currently designated mine escapeways will be contaminated by smoke and toxic gases with the progress of the fire, is critical for effective decision-making to save lives that are in danger. The AMS monitoring data, including carbon monoxide (CO) concentration, airflow rate, smoke, etc., can provide information as to whether the smoke has reached the locations where AMS sensors are installed and if a mine-wide smoke spread has occurred. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has undertaken a task to integrate real-time AMS monitoring data with the mine fire simulation program, MFIRE, to simulate and predict the spread of smoke and toxic gas in a ventilation network based on the real-time AMS data. This paper reports the developed real-time method for characterizing the size and location of an underground mine fire and for predicting the spread of contaminants throughout the mine ventilation network using sensor data from the AMS.INTRODUCTIONNIOSH conducts research to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in underground mines. The advancement of senor technology and the increasing demand for real-time mine parameters monitoring have led to extended applications of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) in underground mines worldwide. In the United States, AMS is primarily used for early mine fire warning by detecting carbon monoxide (CO) in fire hazard areas, such as belt entries. Mine fires can grow rapidly, and time is the critical element. Prompt detection, timely and accurate warnings to those miners potentially affected, and a proficient response by underground miners can have a tremendous impact on the social and economic consequence of a small underground mine fire (Conti et al., 2005). The early detection of a mine fire could gain time for the first responders to put out the fire before it develops into a disaster. An AMS system with CO sensors has especially played an important role in the early detection of mine fires. The continuous monitoring of an underground mine atmosphere with an AMS could generate a large amount of data in a mine fire event. However, the current application of AMS is mainly limited to sending out an alarm when monitored CO concentration exceeds a certain level. An opportunity arises as to whether these data can be further used in fire emergency response. In order to make effective decisions on firefighting strategies, mine workers’ seeking refuges, evacuation and escape, and the timing on when to send rescuers, decision makers need accurate and timely knowledge of the ventilation and fire situation in the mine. Information about the fire intensity, where in the mine the smoke and toxic gases have spread, and whether designated mine escapeways have been compromised by smoke and toxic gases from the fire would greatly increase the effectiveness of these decisions. However, the monitored AMS data only provides atmospheric conditions in the vicinity of sensor locations. What is concluded from the monitored AMS data highly depends on the decision makers’ capability and experience. Predictive insight into fire growth and smoke transport would greatly help decision makers during a fire emergency."

Kahama Mining Corporation Limited (KMCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, operates the Bulyanhulu gold mine. The operation has been in commercial production since April 2001 and is the first modern underground mine to be developed on the Lake Victoria goldfield in Tanzania. Bulyanhulu is located in a major mineralised system along an emerging gold trend. This area, the Lake Victoria Greenstone belt, has been the focus of significant exploration and development programs since 1994, with over 34 million ounces of gold having been discovered and four new mines commissioned. The Bulyanhulu project has accounted for just over a third of the gold resources discovered during this period. From an initial exploration program, which outlined a resource of 1.37 million ounces of gold, Bulyanhulu now hosts a reserve of some 12 million ounces in a resource base, the limits of which are, as yet, undefined. The Bulyanhulu property is located approximately 56 km south of Lake Victoria, in northwestern Tanzania, eastern Africa. A Mining Licence issued by the Government of Tanzania on July 23, 1999 grants to KMCL the exclusive right to mine a concession area covering 51.48 km2. The property is reached via a 75-km road from the main road to Dar es Salaam. The nearest towns are Mwanza to the north on Lake Victoria, 155 km by road and ferry, Kahama, 86 km by road to the south and Isaka, 126 km by road. Isaka is on the rail line between Mwanza and Dar es Salaam and has facilities to receive heavy equipment, and a fuel depot. A gravel airstrip, 1,700 m long has been constructed at the property.

Electronic Product and Process Management [EPPM] systems provide the capability to establish and map information flow between different parties in a construction project as well as model project processes. Much of the information relating to processes and their structure, the actors that operate them, and the data associated with each instance of a process is encapsulated within workflows. The wealth of information contained in an EPPM system can be exploited to extract knowledge that can provide significant cost benefits to construction companies. Workflows provide an ideal medium for the capture of knowledge over the course of a project lifecycle. We demonstrate how this knowledge may then be used to analyze workflows and determine metrics that establish the suitability of workflows to construction processes. We present a conceptual approach to measure the performance of a workflow, its constituent components and evolution, which may be used to lay the foundation for establishing paragon workflows suited to classes of construction activities.

"Cobalt refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because certain compounds of both metals carry risks for adverse health endpoints by inhalation exposure, it is critical to understand the aerosol concentrations of specific substances and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air. Vale Canada has therefore decided to describe the histories of its Ni-related operations and to report industrial hygiene measurements when available. This paper describes electrolytic Co operations carried out at Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), and provides aerosol measurements (1995–2008) for current Co electrowinning operations.RÉSUMÉ L’affinage du cobalt chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco) a été associé à la production de nickel. Puisque certains composés de ces deux métaux comportent des risques d’effets néfastes pour la santé par exposition à l’inhalation, il est essentiel de comprendre les concentrations en aérosol des substances spécifiques ainsi que les procédés métallurgiques par lesquels ils entrent dans l’air. Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ?cradle to grave? approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure. Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill, as are certain principles pertaining to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training and dialogue with stakeholders. For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce.

One of the fundamental trade-offs for copper concentrators is between grinding circuit product size and copper recovery. The capital and operating cost savings and throughput increases for a coarser grind should be evaluated against potential recovery reductions. Other benefits of coarser grinds, such as GHG emissions reductions and favourable effects on tailings and water management should also be considered. This paper assesses the formation of laboratory and pilot test programs, design of process flowsheets, equipment selection, and evaluation methods to determine the most appropriate and economical grind size for a given deposit. The paper will include an evaluation of case studies. INTRODUCTION The majority of the world’s mined copper comes from sulphide deposits, which are mostly processed using crushing, grinding, flotation and dewatering flowsheets to produce copper-bearing concentrates for smelting. Ores must be ground to a sufficiently fine size to achieve an acceptable level of liberation to allow both high recovery of copper and valuable by-product minerals while efficiently rejecting gangue to tailings. Therefore, a key design parameter in process plant design is the grind size of the flotation feed. Copper concentrators use a variety of grind size targets that depend on various factors, including ore mineralogy and the grain sizes of valuable and gangue minerals; the sensitivity of valuable mineral recoveries in the rougher flotation stages to grind size, ore hardness; electricity costs; and mining vs. processing throughput constraints. Typically, copper and by-product recovery increase as grind size is reduced, which can improve revenue, but finer grinds increase power and grinding media operating costs and may have implications for tailings management. This paper explores the trade-offs that should be assessed in determining the optimum grind size, and to answer the question if coarser grinds are worthwhile. METALLURGICAL AND FLOWSHEET FACTORS Recovery-by-size behaviour of sulphide-bearing particles In base metals sulphide flotation, it is typical that flotation recoveries vary by particle size. Metal sulphide particles rendered hydrophobic by collector in intermediate size ranges (e.g. 10 to 100 um) usually show very high recoveries, often approaching 100%. Recovery usually falls away in finer size fractions (<10 um) as fine particles have little inertia and can move around bubbles without colliding and attaching to them. Coarser particles (>100 um) are susceptible to particle-bubble detachment and dropback (Jameson, 2019).

"The Dome Mine, located in South Porcupine Ont. has been in operation since 1910 and is owned and operated by Placer Dome Inc. The current milling facilities were constructed in two phases with the first being commissioned in 1982. It consists of a grinding, gravity separation, thickening, and leaching circuits. The second phase was commissioned in 1988 with the addition of the CIP, stripping, electrowinning, and carbon regeneration circuits.It is now common practice in the gold processing community to add liquid oxygen to leach circuits to increase both recovery and kinetics. Along with these benefits the metallurgical group at the Dome realized the potential to replace compressed air with liquid oxygen as a source of oxygen for the dissolution of gold. A plant trial of liquid oxygen was undertaken during the fall of 1991. The results of this first test were favourable enough to warrant further investigation, and a second plant trial was conducted in December 1991.The data generated as a result of each trial revealed that oxygen could be economically substituted for compressed air as a source of dissolved 02. The energy savings in required horsepower enabled a rapid payback period. Thus the project was approved in the spring of 1992 and l should be operational during the final quarter of 1992. INTRODUCTIONIn a continuing effort to reduce operating costs and improve recovery at the Dome mill it was decided to investigate the feasibility of adding liquid oxygen (02) to the leach circuit. It is now common practice in the gold processing community to add 02 to the leaching process to increase both kinetics and recovery. It was anticipated that an increase in kinetics would allow us to eliminate one or more leach tanks while maintaining acceptable recoveries. The metallurgical group felt that along with these benefits, the potential was also there to reduce power consumption through the reduction in the processing of compressed air which is quite costly (12 cents/1000 cubic feet per minute in 1991)."

This is a rather comprehensive subject and cannot be thoroughly covered in the short rime allowed for its presentation. This article will touch only upon a few of the chief points of the difficulties encountered in recovering copper from brass shell cases in a primary smelter which was not designed to treat scrap metals. Owing to the fact that the plant is at present (Dec., 1946) closed, and our tests were not completed, full details of the results are not available. As is well known, most primary smelters are situated near the mines in the interior of various countries and are not close to seaports or large industrial and railway centres. Consequently, iris unusual for a primary smelter to be asked to treat scrap metal of any kind. When so required, iris obvious that the primary smelter is at a great disadvantage, for the simple reason that it probably has to pay the freight on the scrap from the seaport or industrial centre to the smelter and then also pay the freight on the recoverable metal from the smelter to the refinery, or seaport or industrial centre. Another disadvantage is that a primary smelter is not equipped to sample and unload the scrap nor bas it usually the equipment adaptable for treating the scrap efficiently, as the plant bas been designed to handle large tonnages of ores and concentrates. This short paper will describe some of our difficulties> and how they were corrected. However, it might be advisable to state briefly some of the methods used in treating brass shell cases in other plants. In the first place, a brass plant producing new brass- especially those producing brass billets for extrusion to make brass tubes or rods, or to be drawn into wire, or making brass cake to roll into brass sheets- generally insists upon using new electrolytic copper and zinc and is opposed to using any scrap or secondary brass . Consequently, such a plant usually will not treat brass shell cases. Therefore, the usual procedure is to ship brass shell cases to a secondary smelter, where it is generally sorted, melted, fire-refined, and returned to the market in the form of a high or low brass ingot which can be sold to brass foundries for making brass castings. This evidently is the cheapest and simplest method. Another method is to ship to a smelter which is a combination of a primary and secondary smelter attached to or near an electrolytic refinery. In plants of both these types, that is a primary smelter with Cottrell dust collectors or a combined primary and secondary smelter with Cottrells or a bag house, the zinc may be wasted. However, if a bag house is used, some of the zinc is recovered, but it is usually contaminated with other metals and further processing is required to recover it.

"IntroductionGravity concentration, the separation of two or more minerals due to the difference in their relative specific gravity and usually in a fluid medium, is the oldest recorded form of mineral processing.The principles of gravity concentration were known to, and practiced by, the ancients and Hoover's commentary to De Re Meta/lied'' notes many early references.Over the centuries, as direct smelting ores became more and more uncommon, the mineral processing industry developed and along with it many varied methods of concentration. Gravity concentration declined rapidly in importance in the early twentieth century, and it is only in the last decade that its advantages are being re-evaluated.A significant proportion of ores are processed by gravity; a large proportion being in the iron and coal industries<'>, or in the treatment at very high volume of relatively coarse alluvial deposits. The tin dredges of South East Asia and Beach sand plants of Australia are prime examples.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. A list is given in Table 1; this list is not exhaustive.Principle of Gravity ConcentrationGravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid, such as water or air.The relative movement of minerals to one another is achieved by a variety of methods. These are: separation in a fluid of intermediate density (heavy media separation); by stratification (such as in jigging); in a flowing fluid (cones, spirals, sluices etc.) and with a horizontal shear (shaking tables etc.)."

Abstract - Traditional mine planning based on block models built with interpolation techniques such as kriging does not take into account the uncertainty associated with the estimates. These models are inadequate for short-range mine planning. In contrast, conditionally simulated models reproduce the actual variability (histogram) and spatial continuity (variogram) of the attributes of interest. Conditional simulation can be used to address the problem of measuring the uncertainty associated with an estimate. This paper outlines how the sequential Gaussian conditional simulation algorithm can be used to assess uncertainty of grade estimates and also illustrates how simulated models can be incorporated into mine planning and scheduling. A case study demonstrates the efficiency of the method in assessing risk associated with geological and engineering variables.

Economic viability of base metal mining is complicated by a volatile market that can cause fluctuations in the growth and stability of the mining industry. Nickel is mined primarily for use in manufacturing industrial stainless steel and plating materials. It is essential that nickel production be sufficient to respond to current and future market demand. A Post-Pillar cut and fill mining complex is currently producing nickel sulfide in Northern Manitoba. From 2006 this area has shown a steady increase in the annual production, rising from 11 million pounds to 25 million pounds in 2010, and accounting for 33% of the total production for the Manitoba Operations. It is expected that fine-tuning the mining process can safely enhance ore recovery, improve production consistency, and increase economic viability of the deposit. The Post-Pillar Optimization study was initiated by the local technical and operational departments at the mine and analyzed from July 2010 to March 2011. The purpose of this study was to determine if portions of non-recoverable pillars can be slashed without jeopardizing pillar strength. This ideal case would optimize ore recovery and reduce variability in the ore mining rate. Numerical modeling and geo-mechanical material properties analyses, completed by the rock mechanics group, define the maximum drift width at 32 feet and the minimum pillar width at 18 feet. Thus, it was suggested that up to 3 feet could be slashed from two sides of the standard 24 foot pillars without damaging ground integrity. The field data collected indicates that additional ore could be recovered without compromising the safety of the workplace and the integrity of the complex. Consequently, technical and operational groups work jointly to achieve pillar optimization. Approximately 500,000 pounds of nickel was extracted from the complex via pillar optimization from July 2010 to March 2011. Economic analyses show the pillar optimization method developed for the mining complex is a proven, value-added opportunity. The mining complex remains a safe workplace and has retained ground integrity.

"Magnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the extreme high-speed forming processes. A metal sheet which is accelerated by electromagnetic force is collided onto a mold and fine and sharp details of the product can be obtained. The deformation mechanism of the MPFed metal cannot be understood only by the microstructure observation of the deformed metal. The deformation behavior of the metal should be investigated also by considering the local microstructure change with strain, strain rate and temperature change during deformation. Numerical analysis is an effective method to achieve this requirement. In this study, pure Al and Cu sheets were deformed by MPF. Impact velocity of the metal sheet was calculated by using ANSYS Emag-Mechanical. Based on the obtained impact velocity, the deformation behavior of the metal sheet was reproduced, and local strain, strain rate, and temperature were analyzed by using ANSYS AUTODYN. An eddy current is inducedin the metal sheet. Interaction between magnetic field and eddy current creates electromagnetic force. The metal sheet accelerated by electromagnetic forcecollides ontothe mold. Forming is completed in a few tens of micro-seconds.MPF is suitable for metals with a high electrical conductivity like Al and Cu.The MPFed metal may have characteristic microstructure because of high strain rate deformation."

Real-time mine management solutions have evolved over time from closed, proprietary solutions, to a "system of systems" that may include a wide variety of off-the-shelf components and technologies. Modular Mining Systems has embraced open standards for their NextGen products to bridge the technology gaps between these systems. However, the remaining logical gaps must be overcome, in order to achieve truly seamless integration between discrete systems. When dealing with volatile real-time management problems, the effectiveness of business process modeling and middle-ware can break down. Scientific principles of military command and control applied to mining domain help to achieve better alignment and reach the highest level of integration. The combination of open standards and off-the-shelf hardware and software with a deliberately structured command-and-control approach provides a clear evolutionary path from ad-hoc connected systems towards real-time management of a seamlessly integrated digital mine.

"In order to obtain the equipment necessary to automate the equipment it was decided that the Department of Mines and Milltronics would jointly survey the circuit. This survey involved a metallurgical study by the Department of Mines and Milltronics took sound recordings during manual operation, checking in circuit bottle necks and determining the number of sensors that could be applied.The conveyer is driven by 2 PIV drives, each has a variable speed of 3/ 1. The cross conveyer that feeds directly into the rod mill feed chute will contain an automatic sampler and will eliminate the necessity of stopping the belt feeders to take samples. At present, hourly samples are taken from this point and the circuit is upset and cycling results.The Adequate scale is very close to the rod mill to totalize and thereby give a continuous indication and the second purpose is to take a signal from it and control the solution addition to the rod mill.A pneumatic positioner was obtained and put on the scale which produces a 3 tp 15 psi signal which is proportional to the actual tonnage going across the scale. This signal was fed to a bias loader which was mounted on the control panel. From there the operator can set the amount of solution that is wanted by the rod mill. No matter what the feed rate is, the signal coming from the bias loader will follow it automatically. This in turn goes to the pneumatic solution valve (1 ½” ) and the solution goes in with the feed to the rod mill. This is only part of the solution required for dilution since the rest of it is used as a force jet for the feed to the rod mill."
