"Barytes is one of the major components of drilling fluids used in oil and gas well-drilling. This mineral's close association with the petroleum industry bestows it with a commodity status not enjoyed by many other industrial minerals. Approximately 85% of world barytes production is used as a weighting agent in oil and gas well drilling while the remaining 15% is consumed mainly in the manufacture of barium chemicals, glass and as a pigment, filler or extender.Barytes mining began in Nova Scotia around 1865 and has continued until the present. Currently there are three barytes producers in the province one exporting pharmaceutical-grade barium sulphate and the other two supplying drilling mud-grade barytes to the offshore. Several barytes exploration and development programs are underway with excellent possibilities that Nova Scotia deposits will supply a significantly larger share of the drilling mud-grade barytes used in east coast drilling programs.Currently there is renewed interest in barytes activities in Nova Scotia because of its use as a weighting agent in drilling flu ids used in offshore oil and gas drilling programs.This paper reviews the use of barytes by the well drilling industry; outlines the history of barytes mining in the province, progressing to present-day exploration, development and production activities underway in Nova Scotia; and concludes with the market potential for Nova Scotia barytes."

"Data for underground mine-hoist ropes determined in the Ontario Special Rope Tests were obtained, encoded and analyzed statistically. Prior 10 refined statistical analyses, these data were subjected la characterization studies and preliminary analyses to allow trends to emerge that could be used to guide and facilitate the refined analysis. The data were characterized by determining distribution s for a wide range of variables including remaining strength, service life in terms of lime and hoisting cycles, outer-wire torsion values, elongation during tensile testing, diameter reduction, location of strength loss and the strength lasses associated with corrosion rating and lubrication rating , This paper describes the more important relationships between remaining strength (or, conversely, strength loss) as the dependent variable and some of the principal independent variables mentioned above.IntroductionBoth productivity and safety in underground mines could be improved if mine-heist rope Iife and reliability could be predicted more accurately . As a result, hoist-rope failure processes and their effects on rope life and remaining strength need to be quantified and related in such a way that improved retirement criteria can be developed. This is true whether the failure is incipient or actual or whether the failure mode is by corrosion , wear, fatigue or a combination of these factors."

"The efficiency of operation and life of an advancing longwall coalface depends, to a great extent. on the face-end roof strata conditions and the stability of the gateroads. The factors that influence the rate of closure of gateroads are examined, in particular the gateside pack and the coal rib (crush) pillars. The performance of mechanized packing systems is briefly discussed. Gateroad deformation surveys were carried out at two coal mines to determine the influence of the rib pillar width on gateroad stability; also, the influence of the gateside pack on the immediate roof and floor strata is analyzed based on strata bed displacement measurements from instruments installed in the gateroad and pack-hole of a longwall advancing face operating in a thick seam (7.55 m). Concluding, an evaluation of the fac e-end systems examined is given and recommendations made f or the most suitable rib pillar width. face-end geometry and roof strata reinforcement.IntroductionKevword s: Coal mining, Pillars, Rib pillars, Ground control, Longwall mining, Gateroads , Packing systems, Roof control. The face-end region of a longwall advancing face is the center of mining activity, being the turn-around point for the coal cutting machine. and the place of gateroad formation and movement of special face-end supports. The design of face-end layouts can be aided by knowledge of strata control parameters, such as the effective loading of the immediate roof strata , convergence of the roof and floor, magnitude and distribution of fractures in the roof strata around the face-end , optimum placement of supports, coal seam thickness and strength characteristics, geometry of layout and interaction from neighbouring workings. Generally, the gateroad is formed by one of three face-end methods: (a) advanced headings, (b) in-line system (gateroad formed at the face) or (c) conventional ripping with or without stable elimination (also halfheading). The quality of gateroad is influenced principally by the face-end system employed, standard of gateside pack and width of pillar. A good standard of gateroad is generally achieved by employing the half-heading face-end system, the gateside pack and coal rib pillar having comparative support/ yield (stiffness factor) characteristics. However, the halfheading is often not favoured due to face operation restrictions."

"In high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often observed in foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites. Given that comprehensive investigations of deepseated rock slides are extraordinary costly and therefore are rare, most studies are related to investigations in the surroundings of infrastructures and human settlements. In the framework of this study there is an excellent opportunity to gain new insights in the fundamental processes and mechanisms of slowly moving deep-seated rock slides from a case study in the surrounding of a large dam reservoir in Austria. New fundamentals for comprehensive slope stability analyses and hazard assessments and sound prognoses focussing on the long-term stability and deformation behaviour of slopes under changing boundary conditions (e.g. impounding of a reservoir) and/or concepts for mitigation measures can be obtained. Within this contribution, geological field surveys, deformation monitoring, geophysical and drilling data were analysed and presented. Based on the compiled and analysed data, some key-properties of the rock slide will be presented, whereby special attention will be given on the geometry and internal structure, the slope kinematics, as well as hydrogeological and geomechanical aspects.INTRODUCTIONIn high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often encountered in highly foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites (Agliardi et al. 2012). Critical situations may occur when deep-seated rock slides fail in a rapid manner characterised by very high sliding velocities, and/or when they develop into long run-out rock avalanches. However, many rock slides in foliated crystalline rock masses either do not move at high velocities nor do they accelerate seriously and form extremely rapid slides. Displacement rates in the range of a few millimetres or centimetres per year are common for this type of rock slide (Bonzanigo et al. 2007, Tentschert 1998, Watson et al. 2007). Nevertheless, some case studies show an activity behaviour characterised by acceleration phases reaching velocities of even metres per day. However a slope collapse is not expected and these slopes decelerate to much lower base activities. The trigger for these phases can be manifold and include heavy rainfall and snow melt, initial reservoir impounding and water level fluctuations, changes in the slope’s equilibrium state due to antecedent slow deformation processes, ongoing erosion processes along the toe of the slope, and others (Zangerl et al. 2010)."

"A long-standing objective has been to obtain interpretable measurements of the oxidation-reduction potential in mineral slurries. For this purpose several sensing electrodes (black platinum wire, platinum foil and spiral, gold foil and spiral, and sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and galena) were investigated to determine their response to the presence of sulphide minerals in the pulp, and to the addition of reagents commonly used in flotation. The observed discrepancies between the electrodes may be explained using a combination of the classical mixed potential model for complex solutions and the probability of contact between the mineral particles and the sensing electrode. It is shown from laboratory testwork that gold spirals are preferred over platinum electrodes. Finally, some of the practical aspects of using the electrochemical measurements in a plant environment are discussed.IntroductonThe interpretation of flotation of sulphide minerals in terms of electrochemical (electron transfer) processes has brought new possibilities for process control of selective flotation. Investigations on massive and compacted particulate bed electrodes have shown that the flotation of a given mineral in the presence of a collector can be controlled by the potential induced on the mineral surface. Also, phenomena such as collector less (self-induced) flotation, activation by heavy metal ions, and natural selectivity sustained by galvanic coupling during flotation might also be controlled by electrochemical means.The technique for measuring electrochemical potential in slurries is an adaptation of that used for solutions. The measurement of the oxidation-reduction potential of a solution (ORP , Redox, Eh) is usually carried out by immersing a noble metal electrode (platinum, gold or silver) and a non-polarizable reference electrode: Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE), Standard Calomel Electrode (SCE), or silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) in the solution. (The abbreviation Eh implies the SHE is the reference electrode.) The potential difference between the two electrodes is measured using a high impedance electrometer. ASTM standard D 1498-76 (revised 1981)(1) covers the practical details of such measurements; however, it does not deal with their meaning either in complex solutions or in mineral slurries ."

"The paper deals with the impact of fleet imbalance on a deterministic evaluation of shovel fleet productive capacity. It shows that if the fleet imbalance is overlooked, then estimated fleet productive capacity will be overrated.The paper shows that fleet imbalance inflates utilization, and care must be taken when using such statistics which are derived from reported field-equipment-hours. It shows that the utilization must be deflated by a factor called 'balancing efficiency"" in order to estimate shovel productive capacity correctly. The paper also shows how fleet imbalance can be controlled by managing idle time or downtime in an actual operation.The technique used for measuring the balancing efficiency factor is based on statistical analysis of equipment utilization."

The effects on macrostructure, surface and internal quality, chemistry segregation and mechanical properties on carbon, low-alloy and resulphurized, free-machining steel billets and rolled bars are discussed. Operational aspects as a result of in-mould stirring are highlightedIntroductionA development program on electromagnetic stirring (EMS) in the mould of a continuous caster was started by Ferrco Engineering Limited in 1979, with the first experimental device being developed and installed at Lake Ontario Steel Company. As a result of these initial trials, new designs of in-mould EMS systems have been developed and are currently being used in continuous casters in North America and Europe. The rapid progress which has been made is in large measure due to the fruitful cooperation which has existed between the various parties, including Ferrco, the EMS equipment manufacturer, several operating plants and the University of Toronto.A brief review of some of the basic ' principles of electromagnetic stirring action on solidifying metal, and the landmarks of this process development, will explain the philosophy of this cooperation.From casting practice, it is well known that an equiaxed dendritic structure provides better' material properties than a columnar dendritic structure. Homogeneity of the equiaxed structure leads to better control of material properties, such as strength and ductility. Therefore, many efforts are being made to obtain this structure in continuous casting.The extent of the equiaxed zone is determined to a large degree by convective flow in the liquid. Fluid flow can fragment dendrites in the columnar zone, which then act as nuclei for grains in the equiaxed zone farther down the sump. This process is referred to as dendrite or grain multiplication."

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co. and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behaviour of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-48N stope, 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behaviour of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modelled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modelling. In addition, a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.45-48N StopeThe 45-48N stope is located in the 21 ledge between the 6500 and 6650 levels and contains about 233 000 short tons of mineable ore. The orebody lies within the Homestake Formation and is very irregular being approximately 200 ft long and 75 ft wide. Between the 6500 and 6650 levels, it dips from 35 degrees to 60 degrees east with a near-vertical plunge to the south. Mineralization is characterized by arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite with minor gold. The contact between the Homestake and the overlying Ellison Formation creates a plane of weakness along localized graphitic layers. The footwall dips at approximately 60 degrees but between 100 ft and 120 ft above the 6650 level , the hanging wall flattens to almost 20 degrees causing a significant mining problem."

Zinc metal was first produced in India around 1100 A.O. and a zinc industry based on retorting gradually developed in both India and China(1) . The vertical retort method for smelting zinc ores was developed in England in the 1730s; this was followed by the more fuel efficient horizontal retort process developed by the Belgians in the 19th century(2) . The horizontal retort process was the standard method of zinc manufacture until the 1950s when it became obvious that it could not compete with electrolytic zinc technology(2). The present day extractive metallurgy of zinc is dominated by the electrolytic process which now accounts for almost 80% of the world's primary zinc production. In recent years the electrolytic zinc process has seen significant improvements: the fluid-bed roasting of zinc concentrates, improved leaching and residue treatment techniques such as the jarosite and goethite processes, improved solution purification procedures, mechanization of the zinc electrolysis step and of the zinc melting and casting operation. In addition, new leaching processes have been implemented for the treatment of oxidized ores, particularly silicates, and the pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates is now a commercial reality. Although the electrolytic zinc process was first used on a commercial scale in 1916, its history can be traced back to the 1860s. The purpose of the present paper is to outline the early history of the electrolytic zinc process and to trace the significant developments which led to the first successful commercial electrolytic zinc plants.

"No Canadian or his family is likely to escape the effects of proposals for pension reform tabled on October 9, 1986 by Finance Minster Michael Wilson. New tax rules are proposed for Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), company pensions, and other forms of retirement plans. Draft legislation is expected to be released in the first half of 1987.IntroductionOver two years ago on February, 15, 1984, Mark Lalonde, then Finance Minister, tabled two White Papers. The first, Action Plan for Pension Reform, proposed improvements to the public pension system and increases in the minimum pension benefits standards to be mandated by the federal government. Since then changes have been made to the Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Canada Pension Plan programs. Also, benefits provided under pension plans subject to the federal Pension Benefits Standards Act have been improved significantly.The companion paper, Building Better Pensions f or Canadians, proposed to standardize and, in many cases, improve retirement savings through private plans by revising the tax rule s. When applying numerical techniques to problems of deformation of rocks, the body to be analyzed is divided into small portions and is represented by a system of points linked together with the neighboring points. In the so-called distinct element modeling, the particles in the system are directly connected by springs and a contact law is used to specify forces on the particles to simulate the mechanical behavior of the body. The relation between the spring stiffness and commonly measured material properties, such as the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, should be known a priori. For the general case of a random packing of particles, the relation is found by means of a process in which a system of particles and set of parameters are prepared to simulate a set of specimen-size test and then the input parameters are chosen to match the measured material properties. The validity of the numerical result is only demonstrated by comparison model behaviors with the measured responses. The process includes trial-and-error manner, therefore, no model is complete to reproduce the mechanical properties. In this paper, a relation between the spring stiffness and the elastic constants; the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, is introduced to a three-dimensional distinct lattice spring method. Two simple numerical examples will be presented to demonstrate the performance of the method with the procedure for the determination of the spring stiffness.

"The Early YearsThe Grand Lake coal fields in New Brunswick undoubtedly can claim the distinction of being the first part of North America from which coal was mined and exported. The diaries of the Governor of Massachusetts during the first half of the 17th century clearly establish this fact. There is also a reference in the Massachusetts Colonial Records which indicate that coal exports to New England were carried on as early as 1639.It has generally been believed that Cape Breton mined and exported the first coal; but no account has yet been found to show that this took place earlier than 1676. Both at Grand Lake and Cape Breton the coal was near the surface and removed by hand.When the country passed entirely into British control, Joseph Garrison, a grantee of Maugerville in 1765 moved to Jemseg. While surveying the north side of Grand Lake he discovered outcroppings of coal on the shore of the lake and further inland along the banks of streams. It was he who named Newcastle Creek in reference to Newcastle in England, which was widely known for its coal mines. Joseph Garrison died in 1783, the same year that an influx of United Empire Loyalists increased settlement in Newcastle Creek in the area now known as Minto. Many Loyalists also settled on the shores on both sides of Grand Lake.At a number of points where streams cut channels through the overlying strata, the coal seams were exposed and it was at such outcroppings that the early operations were carried on. A tunnel was driven in the seam from the foot of the bank, affording both an outlet for the coal and natural drainage from the workings. The coal was loaded into boxes and wheeled over wooden tracks to a point on the surface where it could be dumped into wagons and hauled either direct to destination or to where it could be loaded into boats and conveyed via Grand Lake, Jemseg and Saint John river to points of distribution.In the latter part of the 18th century and first years of the 19th century, farmers were undisturbed by mining the coal found on their lands. This was soon to change and resulted in many years of contention between landowners and the Legislative Assembly.New Brunswick became a separate province from Nova Scotia in 1784 and the seat of government moved from Saint John to Fredericton in 1788. The new province had its first priorities; the establishment of counties, the building of roads, and the development of its natural resources. From 1805, records of coal and land development are fairly complete. These records show the increasing interest of the Province in developing the coal fields. This interest resulted in the granting of coal leases to many friends of the government, without any regard for the wishes of the farmers who owned and had occupied the land for many years. The farmers fought back with lawsuits and other forms of dissension but with little success. By the end of the 19th century there were very few farm operators left in the area."

Normally, the hydraulic system and structures are considered to be unrelated items. In reality, the two cannot be separated because one affects and depends on the other to function properly. This paper explores the potential failure areas of hydraulic cylinders, and suggests possible methods to prevent failures from occurring. The use of high-strength low-alloy steel in frames is reviewed and the benefits discussed. Fabrication techniques and handling of material are noted in the hope that this knowledge will aid in the repair of frames in the field.

"This paper presents an overview of the state-of-the-art in industrial and utility power metering and control systems with particular emphasis on Digital Power Meters and Power Demand Controllers.IntroductionModern micro-processor technology, combined with very fast, high accuracy analog to digital converters, is rapidly allowing economical, digital power instrumentation systems to replace the traditional electro-mechanical meters and equipment previously used for instrumentation, control and protection in industrial power systems. Consequently, instrumentation and Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that were only practical for the very large utility or user are now available to smaller utilities and users. The information available includes sequence of event recording, trend logging, energy management cost allocation and automated load control, among others. The heart of any power monitoring system is the Digital Instrumentation Package (DIP) . These ""DIP's"" include Digital Power Meters (DPM's) and Power Demand Controllers (PDC's) as well as other specialized instrumentation packages such as Mini RTU's."

"In order to develop a new pyrometallurgical process for eliminating detrimental arsenic and antimony from the impurity-rich matte produced from copper concentrate, and for treating the occasionally generated speiss in nonferrous smelting processes, the phase relations in the Fe-Cu-S-As-Sb system saturated with carbon at 1473 K were investigated. The distribution of elements between the condensed phases at the miscibility gap, where three equilibrated phases of iron-rich alloy, copper-rich alloy, and matte coexist, were also studied. The investigation was carried out by performing a series of laboratory scale experiments in an electrical furnace at 1473 K, followed by a quenching method on the final stage. The samples obtained from the experiments were analyzed by using Inductively Couple Plasma (ICP), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Carbon Infrared Spectrometry (CIS) techniques.The results were compared with previous investigations for the Fe-Cu-S-As-C and Fe-Cu-S-Sb-C systems and discussed on the basis of the molar fraction distribution for both arsenic and antimony in the matte phase at five different matte grades. It is expected that by using this phase separation technique it might be feasible both, the cleaning of a complex copper matte and the elimination of arsenic and iron together with an acceptable amount of antimony into the iron-rich alloy phase, which can be discarded as a harmless and smaller deposit."

"The valleys of the Dordogne and the Vézère (France) have been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the famous site of Lascaux. A few miles away, the village of La Roque-Gageac is also a very popular tourist destination (about 1.5 million tourists per year): The village is sandwiched between a massive limestone cliff and the Dordogne river. The collapse of a cave roof high above the village in January 2010 led us to characterize instability together for the cave and the whole cliff and propose a adapted instrumentation to monitor the fracture openings in the rock mass that are linked to climatic variations. Measurements have been going on and been recorded for nearly 4 years. They point out the role of thermal stress fatigue in the breakdown of the rock mass. In this paper we describe the site under study, the instrumentation and its main results. INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of thermal fatigue has been very little studied as far as rocks are concerned, whereas it is rather well characterized for other types of materials: Elsevier published a journal dedicated to fatigue (International Journal of fatigue). In the case of rocks, thermal phenomena and their impacts on mechanical behavior have been analyzed from a micro-structural point of view, and it is now well-known that an increase in temperature causes a dilatation of crystals (Arnould et al., 2004; Berest & Weber, 1998). This dilatation may lead to the development of inter-granular traction and compression stresses, and if those stresses are greater than fracture strength, inter-granular and intra-granular cracks may take place. On the other hand, the fatigue phenomenon (cyclic repetition of a temperature variation which is less extreme than the one that may lead to this inter-granular or intra-granular fracture) is a phenomenon which has not been much studied.The principal studies on thermal fatigue on rocks come mainly from the field of geomorphology, particularly in connection with the analysis of the evolutions of past climate that can explain the present shapes of those landforms: those studies remained essentially qualitative and not quantitative. Le Ber & Oter Duthoit (1987) proposed a thermal and thermodynamic approach to analyse the disaggregation of rock masses. This analysis is dedicated to the study of paleoclimates and was implemented to better understand the formation of slope deposits in order to propose transfer models permitting the reconstruction of the climactic conditions contemporary to their appearance. Presence of fine dust in air causes serious health hazard for mine operators resulting in such serious problems as coal workers? pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Major sources of dust appear of course along the mining face where the minerals are extracted. Proper control and management are required to ensure safe working environment in the mine. Presented here is the use of a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach to investigate the flow and dust behaviour in mining tunnels. The objective of this study is to propose and examine various strategies to mitigate dust dispersion from the mining face and reduce dust concentration to a safe level for the operator. In a companion study, the authors investigated various methods for mitigating dust dispersion from the mining face to ensure safe dust concentration levels in the mine tunnel. Among the examined methods, implementation of brattice to direct the flow from the main airway to the mining face is the most effective method to disperse dust particles away from the mining face. The installation of brattice, however, will limit the movement of mine operators and vehicles in the tunnel. Hence, application of a hybrid brattice which is a combination of a physical brattice along with suitable directed and located air curtains is proposed and examined. Based on the CFD simulation results, over a range of parameters of interest, it was found that the physical brattice blocks the ventilation air and directs it to the mine face while an air curtain located along the brattice outlet offers flexibility in keeping the dust away from the operator allowing more freedom for the operator and the equipment. Results of the modelling over a range of parameters of interest are presented and discussed with the goal of managing dust concentrations within safe limits for the operator.
