"The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is located on the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin. The uranium mineralization is, for the most part, confined to the Athabasca Group, which is underlain by pre-Helikian metamorphic rocks of the Western Craton.The deposit is characterized by a remarkable train of mineralized glacial erratics which led to the original discovery. The mineralization is present as a ""high-grade"" core and a diffuse ""low-grade"" aureole. The ""high-grade"" core occurs as a stockwork of steeply dipping pitchblende veins which strike N 50°E. Hematite, siderite and secondary silicate are also abundant. The ""low-grade"" aureole contains uraniferous goethite, argillaceous material and rare carbon buttons. Recent alteration to coffinite has taken place along the margins of pre-existing ore minerals.The ""high-grade"" core is 390 m long and 10 to 40 m wide, and is surrounded by an irregularly shaped zone of ""low-grade"" mineralization with a similar length and a width of up to 350 m.Comparing the Fond-du-Lac deposit to other unconformity-type deposits, several important differences can be noted:1. Ninety per cent of the ore is above the unconformity, in the Athabasca sandstone.2. The deposit is not associated with underlying graphitic rocks or a major structure.3. The clay-rich alteration zone is not extensive around the Fond-du-Lac deposit.Although there are differences with other Athabasca unconformity-type deposits, the high-grade portion below the unconformity suggests a common origin.The ore deposit is postulated to have been formed from uranium-bearing solutions which entered the stockwork of fractures. Following the reduction in part of these solutions by pre-existing carbonaceous matter and pyrite and/or chemical reaction with pre-existing hematite, deposition continued as a result of decreasing temperature and pressure. Subsequently, minor supergene redistribution of the uranium has taken place."

"The largest Canadian Lamella thickener installation to date, with 13,600 square feet of effective clarification area, is being successfully operated at the Rocanville Division of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. This paper describes the operational principles and design features of the Lamella thickener, the testwork leading to its specification f or the Rocanville phase two expansion project and a review of the performance of the full- size unit which was ultimately installed.IntroductionThickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated an d he a ted structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to en sure good flotation circuit performance Because these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin-type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 46 metres in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a LamellaTM thickener and one other type of ‘High Rate' thickener as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project.This paper describes the operational principles and design features o f the Lamella thickener (manufactured by Axel Johnson lnc.), the testwork leading to the specification of a Lamella for the Rocanville expansion project and are view of the performance of the full size unit (1486 m2 of the effective settling area) which was ultimately installed and is now successfully operating in the Rocanville plant."

"A mine evaluation method based on the use of a computer program that models mining with an open-ended dynamic program is presented in this paper. It is demonstrated with an example how the method is applied, how some of the decision variables are related in the particular industrial environment and how these decision variables affect the economic benefits of mining.IntroductionTwo distinguishing characteristics make mining a particular industrial environment: exhaustible resources of a given ore deposit and heterogeneousness of the ore grade spatial distribution in the ore deposit. These characteristics, inflation, uncertainty and cyclical price variations which greatly affect estimated cash flows also contribute in rendering difficult the evaluation of the economic outcome of mining at the preliminary planning stage.Decision variables and their ranges are associated with the mine plan; basically, they include choices of the mine's nominal capacity (mining and milling), the sequencing of mining through the deposit, the ranges of possible production rates and cutoff grades, and the stockpiling policies. The mine's nominal capacity must be decided at the planning stage, but this capacity choice must take into account flexibility to modify other decision variables as mining commences and uncertainty resolves.Although it is generally accepted in discounted cash flow analysis that the sequence of mining must proceed from the richest to the lowest-grade stopes (with correspondingly ajusted cutoff grades), this may not produce optimum benefits when cyclical price variations are considered.Mining rates and cutoff grades can also be adjusted to changing economic conditions, taking into account the limited resources of the ore deposit. Thus, when prices are thought to be in the trough of a cycle, production can decrease to preserve ore for expected greater future profits. When prices rise, mining rates can increase possibly even over the mine's nominal capacity. In both cases, the machinery's effectiveness shall not be-optimally utilized; this will be reflected particularly by the variations in the concentrator's metal recovery and the concentrate grade output."

"The composition and the possible utilization of a slag sample from a nickel smelter operation in the Sudbury district were investigated. The sample containing 0.136% Ni, 0.10% Co and 0.29% Cu could be characterized as a fayalit e slag with a sulphide bearing glass matrix. While the fayalite contains most of the Co, Ni is enriched within both sulphides and fayalite. Cu is only present in higher amounts in sulphides or metallic droplets. This, as well as the small grain sizes of the mineral phases, inhibits significant enrichment by mechanical methods. However preconcentration is possible by means of magnetic separation. An effective hydro metallurgical approach proved to be oxygen pressure leaching with sulphuric acid. Accordingly, the method proposed for processing the investigated slags is to combine the normal utilization as coarse construction material with pressure leaching of the fines and the ground upgraded magnetic fraction. Besides the recovery of base metals, the leaching process yields fine-grained residues, which, after addition of CaD, will set to a cement-like material, or can be used as a pozzolanic cement colour. INTRODUCTIONDuring the pyro metallurgical processing of nickel ores, the valuable metals nickel, cobalt and copper are enriched within the sulphide matte, similar to the smelting of copper ores. The resulting waste materials are slags, which may still contain valuable metal contents of up to 0.5% or above . These contents are close to the cut-off grades of some nickel-cop per-cobalt deposits. The methods that are used to recover copper from slags comprise in general further pyro metallurgical treatment, often after enrichment by flotation. Another area of application for such slags is their use as construction material. However, this might cause environmental problems if nickel containing dusts are produced.Based on one example, the characerization and a possible way of complete utilization of nickel smelter slag s as construction materials in combination with partial base metal recovery are described in this paper. The investigated slag sample was obtained from a dump site in the Sudbury district, Ontario. Detailed test series for process optimization were not possible during this study due to the limited available sample size."

A program of geochemical till prospecting, carried out by Derry, Michener & Booth in 1974, was instrumental in t~ e discovery of a copper deposit in Currie Township, Ontario, beneath thick lacustrine deposits of the Abitibi Clay Belt. The prospecting system involved the continuous collection of glacial sands and gravels beneath the clays, using a track-mounted, dual-tube rotary drill, and the separation and geochemical analysis of the heavy mineral content for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag and Au. In one of 22 holes drilled down-ice from nine Canadian Nickel airborne EM conductors, fragments of chalcopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite, assaying 12% Cu, were recovered from a 14-foot gravel section beneath 83 feet of clay. Ultimately, mineralization was identified in 10 of 11 additional holes drilled up to 3,000 feet down-ice from the Currie deposit. The glacial fan, when compared to the 1,200- by 165-ft area of the subcropping mineralization, is at least 20 times the area of the deposit and is the result of glacio-fluvial reworking of the mineralized ground moraine. The Currie deposit is contained within a Keewatin succession of graphitic argillite, dacite tuff and graywacke, which is intruded by dacite and feldspar porphyry sills and dykes and truncated by a Keweenawan diabase dyke. Grade and thickness of the mineralization, which lies chiefly within the argillite, is related to felsic intrusives and hydrothermal alteration, and to fold hinges.

"During 1973 to 1978, Canadaka Mines Limited, a subsidiary of St. Joseph Explorations Ltd., undertook an extensive exploration and development program in the Cobalt area. This program resulted in the delineation of previously unknown stratigraphic units in the Archean volcanic sequence. During this time period, significant are controls related to area silver deposits were also identified.The Archean geology is comprised of a volcanic pile conformably overlain by sediments. The volcanics contain at least two felsic volcanic centres near the stratigraphic top of the pile. The bulk of the pile consists of mafic flows and interflow sediments. lnterflow sediments around silver are shoots contain mineralized halos of base metal sulphides. The halos exhibit lateral and vertical metal zoning with Cu, Pb and Zn mineralization decreasing away from an are shoot.Silver mineralization controls determined during the Canadaka program agree with the historically well established importance of Coleman sediments as well as Archean contacts for hosting silver deposits. The vertical extent of are shoots is typically 150to 250ft. A strong correlation was found to exist in the Cobalt area between Archean strike and the strike of are veins. Finally, al/ Cobalt area are deposits appear to be associated with a distinct volcanic pile at the top of a sequence of Archean flows."

"Low-pressure sodium light sources have been available for several years, but have not received wide acceptance in underground mining. This is because they are difficult to operate using DC power, they are not an intrinsically safe light where explosive gases may be encountered and they give poor colour rendition.With the need for energy conservation, several Canadian hard-rock metal mines are now changing their lighting to low pressure sodium, as it has the highest efficacy of any light source in terms of lumens per watt. Studies have pointed out several other advantages as well. Glare can be controlled, they penetrate fog well, they are easily maintained, they have a long life and they give the highest visual acuity when compared to other types of lighting. As well, in an underground mine, contrast is much more important than colour for task identification. For close work, the colour problem is alleviated with the use of cap lamps.Case studies are presented from Canadian practice. These show how the lights are modified for underground use, calculations preceding light installation, and how and where the lights are installed in the underground environment. Mention is made of worker reaction to the lights and possible physiological effects.IntroductionThe importance of good underground lighting to the total environment of mining cannot be overemphasized. In addition to the obvious benefits of improved worker morale, available studies show that good lighting practices reduce accident severity and frequency as well as increase production."

A review of induction motors characteristics, adjustable frequency controller fundamentals, and three commonly used controllers is presented. General application guidelines for the three different types of controllers; variable voltage input , current source input and pulse width modulated are then reviewed in detail, and an example of the economic benefit of this technology is discussed. IntroductionSoon after static DC variable speed drives were well established in industry, a need for static AC variable speed drives was seen. The first technical papers describing possible systems appeared in the mid-1960s, with commercially available units arriving in the early 1970s. Without exception, static AC drives are substantially more complex than their DC counterparts, but they have some very desirable properties. As compared to DC motors, AC motors are less costly, physically smaller, more reliable, require less maintenance , easily sealed, have good load regulation, are able to run at higher operating voltages, and have little danger of over-speed runaway . These properties are particularly desirable in explosion-proof, submersible or difficult accessibility applications.Variable speed AC drives are now a proven technology. available in packages from Sub-horsepower to hundreds of horsepower, from 115VAC to 4160 VAC. This paper covers the principles of operation of three common types of controllers, application criteria, motor consideration and finally an example of how an AC variable speed drive can pay for itself in terms of energy savings."

Deposits may be classified into nine categories depending on their relationship to intrusive rocks, discordant or concordant contacts with the host rocks, morphology, and major structural controls. Deposits consist mainly of wollastonite, calcite and clinopyroxene. They may contain one or several of the following minerals: feldspar, scapolite, quartz, titanite sulphides, zoisite, clinozoisite, garnet, idocrase and prehnite. Wollastonite content may reach over 70%. Some deposits are associated with graphite veins. Better understanding of the geology, combined with the proposed classification provides new exploration guide for wollastonite. Several deposits have grades of economic interest. Further work is needed to determine if any of these deposits can be exploited for profit."

"This paper focusses on the strength or capacity of cable bolts and introduces a new perspective for cable bolt design by demonstrating that mining-induced stress changes may affect cables in a detrimental manner. The concept underlying a novel cable bolt pull-out resistanceor bond capacity model is described and its practical significance is demonstrated by application to a simple two dimensional scenario of a fall-of-ground.A number of practical implications emerging from the application of this model are discussed to provide guidance to ground control personnel jar improving cable bolt support systems in mining applications. These include cable layout optimization, use of cable pre-reinforcements, assessment of embedment length requirements, need for plated cables (or straps), use of bird-caged cables (or buttons), and grout quality issues.IntroductionDuring the last decade, cable bolting has become a standard support technique in mining for handling wide spans, reinforcing are passes, preventing or reducing dilution of ore in marginally stable stopes, and for many other rock support need s.In its infancy, many deficiencies in cable bolt supports resulted from improper installation techniques and, in particular, grout quality control problems and the use of empty breather tubes (Goris, 1990). The development of special grout pumps and fail proof placement procedures (Oliver, 1992; Bourchier and O'Flaherty, 1992) have eliminated many of these early problems. Nevertheless, there are still situations where cables seem to lose their capacity during mining, and in these cases the cables do not provide the expected and needed ground support. In some instances, cables perform extremely well, whereas in others the same support layout and quality of support installation seem to be insufficient, allowing falls-of-ground or progressive cavings to occur."

However, in order to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions, Canadian nickel smelters will possibly go through some modifications or rebuilding.IntroductionThis paper presents a review of the Canadian nickel industry in relation to the world nickel industry. Major changes are described which have occurred in the characteristics of the nickel market over the last thirty years. The pre sent status of the nickel market with respect to Forecasting future trends is reviewed and attempts are made to predict what further changes will take place in the next two decades. "Determining the correct mechanism of a boiler tube failure is important for the prevention of future tube failures. Proper corrective measures can be undertaken to alleviate the root cause or causes for a failure only when the correct mechanism is known. A mechanism of boiler tube failure is defined as the process which degrades the tube and produces a failure.An expert system package was developed for use by electric utility power plant personnel during investigation into the cause of a boiler tube failure. It is intended to assist their efforts to recognize and identify a basic failure mechanism that can produce the type of boiler tube failure under investigation. The program guides the user to the most likely failure mechanism by asking simple questions, answers which can be obtained by determining the failure location, type of fuel, and from visual inspection of the failed tube. Expert systems are a form of artificial intelligence which imitate the decision-making process of experts.IntroductionBoiler tube failures (BTFs) continue to be the single largest source of forced outages in fossil fired electricity generating stations. Because of this a concentrated effort is being made to minimize boiler tube failure occurrences. Eliminating boiler tube failures could be worth $5 billion a year to the electric power industry(1).The aggressive service environment of fossil-fired boilers is largely the reason for these failures because the combined effects of stress, temperature, corrosion, erosion and vibration cause deterioration of boiler tube material properties and reduction in wall thickness.Determination of the boiler tube failure mechanism is important for the prevention of future problems. The root cause for a failure can be established and proper ameliorative measures taken only when the failure mechanism is identified correctly. The correct identification of failure mechanism is a complex process which may include many individuals and institutions. Technical specialists in metallurgy, chemistry, combustion, and boiler design frequently cooperate with the station staff in a failure investigation . These individuals rely on personal experience and numerous reports , theories, studies, private communications and investigations concerning the different failure modes and mechanisms."

"With the growth of large scale surface mining operations, waste disposal and stability of waste dumps pose a challenging problem to engineers. Vibrations due to blasting operations proximal to these dumps further complicates dump design. Many dumps which are statically stable may become unstable due to the effects of blasting vibrations.A joint project between CANMET and Smoky River Coal Ltd. has been initiated to study the dynamic stability of waste dumps. The study involves development of an analytical algorithm combined with field monitoring to assess dump performance.Another objective of the study is to provide baseline data for a vibration attentuation relationships for sedimentary rock (coal) environments: most studies to date are for base metal mines. The effect of dump thickness on vibration response is also addressed.The key objective of the study is to present a methodology for assessing the dynamic stability of waste dumps. Implicit in this methodology are a number of assumptions concerning vibration attenuation in sedimentary rock environments, and response of the dump material to induced vibration. Where possible, these assumptions have been compared with monitoring data as a check on their validity."

"Canada's largest known chromite deposit occurs in a layered intrusion in the Bird River area of Manitoba. However, numerically most of the chromite occurrences are in the Appalachians. Few, apparently minor, occurrences are also known in the Cordillera.In the Appalachians, chromite occurs as lenses and pods in dunite; they are of ""podiform"" type. The individual concentrations vary in size from a few pounds to tens of thousands of tons. Locally, chromite concentrations form discontinuous zones extending several hundred feet along strike and presumably down dip, therefore resembling boudinaged layers. Chromite layering and lineation are commonly concordant to those of the host rocks.The Appalachian chromite occurrences are thought to have been formed by fractional crystallization and perhaps also by liquid immiscibility. Their present shape and distribution are largely the result of deformation mostly prior to complete solidification of their host rocks. Therefore, the attitude of layering, foliation, lineation and other features related to deformation provide valuable guides in predicting the probable distribution of chromite, and hence are helpful in exploration.Chromites fulfilling the requirements for metallurgical, refractory and chemical grades occur in the Appalachians. Although the Appalachian deposits are similar in size and grade to some of the chromite deposits being mined elsewhere, they are unlikely to be economic, at present, in the higher wage Canadian environment. However, in case of shortages in chromite ore supply which may result, among other reasons, from increasing tendency to further processing in the producing countries, the Appalachian occurrences may become sources of ore. "The main components of a ""PC” -based mineral inventory system are described in a sequence common to many real reserve/ resource estimation projects and in the practical context of problems and decision-making typically encountered in such studies. Some components are designed particuarly to improve the geostatistical instructional capability of the package. An important part of this approach involves the use of widely available software for data manipulation and evaluation in the design of a mineral inventory study progressing to mine design and feasibility. A variety of more or- less fixed routines written in high level languages provide acceptable computational speeds on a personal computer. These critical segments are linked by simple, short, compiled Basic programs easily adjustable to various data configurations and needs. IntroductionGeostatistical mineral inventory estimation has progressed greatly since its slow dissemination during the 1960s. The mining industry generally has accepted the benefits of the technique, notably the quantification of grade and geology, an indication of error in grade estimation, and of the mined volume / grade variance relationship (Clark, 1979, Isaacs and Srivastava, 1989).Acceptance has been slowed, first by complexities of geostatistical theory and second by a bewildering variety of computer systems and applications programs. Continuing improvements in education will facilitate a better understanding of the underlying theory.The purpose of this paper is to describe, in a practical context, the development of a geostatistical-based approach to reserve/resource estimation. The approach integrates various existing commercial software packages with a wide selection of programs developed by the authors for personal computers which estimate mineral inventories and educate users in the techniques applied; that is, the QMIN system.It is hoped that the approach presented here will convince mining and geological engineers concerned with resource estimation, of the soundness of geostatistical methods and its broad potential to their problems."
