Abstract The aqueous oxidation of pyrite in caustic solutions under oxygen pressure was investigated by measuring that effect of reaction variable on oxygen consumption by the reactions. From the results of this investigation, a model for the process has been proposed. In this model, sulphur diffuses as a positive ion through an oxide layer which forms on the sulphide particles and is then oxidized to sulphate ion. Iron is oxidized by substitutional diffusion of oxygen atoms into the oxide layer. The effect of most reaction variables on the rate of oxygen consumption can be explained with this model. Introduction Recent investigations (1,2,3) have shown that certain sulphide ores can be readily leached by agitating the ore in the form of a pulp under pressure in the presence of oxygen. Since very little was known of the mechanism of this oxidation, a programme of investigation was inaugurated in 1949 in the laboratories of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of the University of British Columbia. Financial support for the investigation was received from the National Research Council in the form of student grants and bursaries, from the Canadian Liquid Air Company, Limited, and from the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The first objective was to devise a technique to study the primary oxidation reactions in aqueous solutions and to apply the technique to a detailed study of the oxidation of pyrite in caustic solutions.

Electricity is a cost component that can and should be managed.Although the term management can mean different things to different people, the intent is always the same: to make the best possible use of existing resources, whether labour, equipment or electricity.The simple approach to managing electricity presented in this paper consists of four steps.I. Understand Peak Demand and Energy. It is essential to understand the terms, peak demand and energy and their effect on your electrical bill.2. Know Your Present Electrical Use. The present use of electricity in the plant must be known. This goes beyond simply knowing how much is used at each time of day, to accurately knowing how each process is contributing to the total plant electrical load, and ultimately to the electrical bill.3. Identification of Savings Opportunities. With this information, energy savings opportunities for reducing the electrical bill and improving profits can be identified.4. Implementing Improvements. Having identified areas of potential savings, improvements can then be implemented in order of their significance. This could be a matter of simply improving operations, or in some eases may mean the use of an automatic control system.These four steps can result in significant dollar savings."

"Quinsam Coal Ltd. is assessing the potential of developing a thermal coal deposit near Middle Quinsam Lake on Vancouver Island. The coal reserve outlined is classified as a high-volatile, bituminous ""A” steam coal and is composed off our separate seams of varying quality within the Late Cretaceous Comox Formation.Open-pit mining methods will utilize a walking dragline and a truck / shovel module as the primary stripping tools. Following washing and mechanical drying in a Baum jig preparation plant, the coal will be transported to the proposed dock at Campbell River for shipment via 55, OOO-DWT vessels to world markets. The paper will outline the development and status of the project to date. IntroductionQuinsam Coal Ltd. is a joint venture of Weld wood of Canada Ltd. and Luscar Ltd . The participants propose to develop a thermal coal mine in the Middle Quinsam Lake area, 17 miles inland from Campbell River on Vancouver Island (Fig. I). By acquiring all the assets of Canadian Collieries in 1962, Weldwood also came to own the coal rights of the area proposed for development. Luscar Ltd . ha s been designated as project manager until completion of construction and thereafter will act as operator of the mine.Surface mining methods will be used to produce approximately 1.0 million short tons of coal annually from the Quinsam property. Seven separate mining pit s will be developed along with the supporting minesite facilities, including a proper paration plant. Transportation routing to Campbell River and the establishment of docking facilities will be required. The initial economic life of the mine is 12 years, with the provision to extend this in the future by developing higher-ratio, auger or underground reserves."

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. "The paper outlines the history of rubber mill liners beginning with the awarding of the first North American patent rights in 1923. It includes the early-day applications and installations of the 1920s and 1930s through to their present-day application. Over-all rubber mill liner design is discussed in relation to present day installations employing rubber mill liners in various grinding applications. A brief overview is given of a manufacturer's procedures to produce rubber mill liners.IntroductionIn early 1910, it became apparent that the productive life of the silver mines in Cobalt, Ontario, could be substantially prolonged by mining lower-grade ores.The mining of lower-grade ores required the establishment of treatment facilities which initially employed jaw crushers, stamp mills, jigs and concentrating tables. The recovery of silver in other than a coarse metallic form required the additional step which was introduced at that time: the cyanidation of silver concentrates from the tables. The resultant requirement for increased and improved recovery led to the introduction of grinding mills, i.e. tube mills.Shortly after the introduction of the tube mills to the Nipissing Mine's mill in 1914, the idea of using rubber as a mill liner material was spawned. However, no action was taken due to the advent of World War I. It is interesting to note that the idea of rubber mill liners emanated from having used pieces of solid rubber tire as an emergency repair on a set of liners when a liner had broken and no immediately available spare was on site.The credit for this ingenuity and subsequent application for a patent on rubber mill liners falls to James John Denny, the mill superintendent, and Rolla Barnum Watson, the general manager of Coniagas Mines Limited. The patent application was formally made on December 3, 1921. The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent No. 1,470,597 on October 16, 1923."

"The Athabasca Basin has been the scene of an intense exploration effort since the late 1960s, resulting in the establishment of this area as one of the major uranium districts in the world.The A thabasca Group is of Helikian age and unconformably overlies metamorphic rocks of Aphebian and Archean age. Most of the known uranium deposits have a close spatial relationship with the unconformity, graphitic meta-sediments, major northeast-trending structures and the basin edge. It should be noted that, in regard to the latter, some of the Cluff Lake deposits are exceptions.The pre-Helikian rocks underlying the Athabasca Group have been divided into six Iithostructural domains. The known uranium deposits are concentrated in the Wollaston and Mudjatik domains in the southeastern portion of the basin.The orebodies typically have a narrow high-grade portion below the unconformity and a broader, lower-grade disseminated zone in the overlying sandstone. Over-all grades average over 1% U3O8 and our estimate of known reserves totals more than 400 million pounds of contained U3O8. Some of the deposits have high concentrations of other metals, including nickel, arsenic, cobalt and gold. Ubiquitous chlorite and clay alteration is characteristic of the orebodies.Other Proterozoic basins in Canada of similar ages and having analogous geological settings to the Athabasca have received far less attention. Although little of the known uranium mineralization in these basins is related to the Helikian unconformity, there may be an exploration potential for deposits similar to those of the Athabasca basin.IntroductionThe Athabasca sedimentary basin is located within the Churchill Structural Province of the Canadian Shield in Northern Saskatchewan. The basin is elliptically shaped and is approximately 800,000 square kilometres in area.The objective of this paper is to summarize the various elements in the genesis of the unconformity-type uranium deposits of the Athabasca Basin and to evaluate the comparative potential of other Proterozoic basins to host similar unconformity-type deposits."

"Crucial to the implementation of new computer-based information systems at Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited was a data communications network that would take computing power to the various mine and plant sites. Falconbridge required a capability to provide on-line data entry, inquiry, and reporting capabilities in three geographical areas, six mines, two mills, a smelter, approximately fifty shops, seven warehouses and numerous administrative offices throughout the Sudbury basin.Conventional cabling methods were rejected based on the projected cost of installation of necessary cables; lack of flexibility to meet the changing requirements of the mine environment; and the risk of losing service to an entire area depending on solitary communication lines.Instead, Falconbridge selected and installed a Data Carrier System (DCS) and Packet Switching Communication System from Teltone Limited, Markham, Ontario. This combined system ""piggy-backs"" computer data over voice-grade twisted pair wire, bringing data to the associated PBX equipment. From there data packets are assembled and routed to the central computer site where they are disassembled for entry into the host machine.Falconbridge has been successful in using existing technology to solve communications problems in a difficult environment. Plans for the future of this network will increase its utilization for technical and real time data communications in addition to the business systems workload it now handles. The Computer Services group in Sudbury is confident that the data highway will handle communications traffic well into the future.IntroductionIn late 1984, the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited undertook a review of their existing business computer systems. The results of this review indicated that there was an opportunity to improve the timeliness and quality of information coming from the existing computer-based systems while achieving an investment payback by undertaking the project. The greatest benefits from this project would be achieved if the computing tools could be delivered to the employees that were the day-to-day users of the data. Falconbridge's existing business systems were oriented to the batch mode of processing. An alternative solution to using the existing programs had to be found."

"Gravity profiles were established over five known Middle Silurian pinnacle reef s in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario. The profiles were approximately 3 km long, with stations every 60 m. Four fairly recent technological developments were used which now make the gravity method relatively efficient and inexpensive compared to the techniques available two decades ago. These are: (1) a La Coste-Romberg model G gravimeter to measure the gravitational attraction with a sensitivity of 0.01 mgal; (2) a Sokkisha model B-2 semiautomatic engineers level to measure the station elevations with an accuracy of 0.5 cm; (3) a Huntec FS-3 hammer reflection seismograph to determine the overburden thickness to an accuracy of ± 7%; and (4) a modern microcomputer to process the data sets and mathematically filter the gravity values. Thus, two men can measure and analyze approximately 1 km of profile per day and obtain the residual gravity profile to an accuracy of ± 0. 05 mgal. Positive gravity anomalies of 0.17 to 0.72 mgal were observed along all five profiles that approximately delineate the dimensions of the known pinnacle reefs, which have an average height of 120 m, diameter of 1500 m and depth to top of 575 m. The relative ease of the gravity survey method makes it a cost-effective technique for hydrocarbon exploration in southwestern Ontario. IntroductionPinnacle reefs are important sources of oil and gas. Although the pinnacle reefs in southwestern Ontario are small, they may contain commercial pools of oil and gas because of their proximity to refineries. They are also useful for subsurface storage of gas to meet the winter surge in gas demand.At present, geophysical exploration for new pinnacle reefs is done primarily by relatively expensive seismic methods, which are also limited in southwestern Ontario by prohibitions on blasting. Gravity methods of exploration were attempted more than two decades ago in this region. (Pohly, 1954); however, the level of technology at that time made the method marginal in sensitivity and quite expensive. Several subsequent developments- gravimeters with greater sensitivity and operating ease, ""self-levelling"" levels for elevation control, hammer seismic reflection units for determining overburden thickness and portable microcomputers for efficient data analysis-have significantly improved the precision and cost effectiveness of the gravity method. Five known pinnacle reefs were selected in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario (Fig. 1), to test the effectiveness of integrating these developments to locate and define additional reefs. Isolated reefs were chosen to avoid the problem of the gravity effect s of one reef interfering with those of a neighbouring reef. The surveys were facilitated by choosing reefs with a concession road passing directly over them ."

"AS I begin my remarks this morning, please let me say how honoured and gratified I was to receive your invitation to address you here during your deliberations in historic Quebec City. The high esteem in which your Institute is held is reflected in the respect and deference accorded to it by industry across Canada. I feel privileged to be here with you today.I would like to discuss with you some applications of natural gas in the mining industry and suggest to you, in closing, some possible avenues of future development.Natural gas first became avail-able for industrial purposes in Northern Ontario in late 1958. Acceptance of natural gas, as a source of energy by the industry of that area, has been both widespread and gratifying. The mining industry of Northern Ontario has in-creased its annual use of natural gas by approximately 35 per cent each year since 1958. We believe that this trend will continue, al-though we will probably have to accept a more modest 10 per cent annual gain as the market approaches saturation. I would like to explain how we were able to do this and where all this gas is used. Our first sales were largely a matter of price-and the savings we offered were substantial."

This paper deals with the large iron ore concentrating plant owned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. The plant is part of the Carol Project, which is being developed in the Wabush area of western Labrador. The mining and milling operations were officially opened in July of this year. The handling of fine material has always been considered a serious operational problem. The crushing, grinding and sizing of 50,000 tons of iron ore per day, in a dry state, could present sizeable problems in maintenance and orderliness. The operation, as a whole, embraces many recent developments in the iron ore industry. Mining operations include the latest techniques of jet piercing and blasting. Primary crushing involves a single crusher, which handles the complete production. Grinding of the ore includes the latest concepts of dry autogenous grinding in air-swept mills. The actual concentration of the ore is per-formed, in the wet state, by the use of spiral concentrators, with provision for possible flotation or magnetic separation, if required. The upgraded concentrates are either stored or pelletized, prior to shipment by rail to Seven Islands.

"The objective of Part J of this paper is to identify the limitations of the traditional modelling methods and to illustrate, by example, the potential for error created by their application to complex deposits and mining situations. Part 2 describes the evolution of new, proven technology which eliminates these deficiencies and provides precise and practical alternatives. These promote the use of realistic geological and mining shapes and eliminate altogether the rectangular approximations of traditional methods.The Case for Precision ModellingIt is not the intent of this paper to promote the benefits of computer modelling per se. It is assumed that these are recognized by the mining industry in general. The concern of Part 1 is to identify, qualify and quantify (where possible) the limitations of the tractitional modelling methods. In many instances these methods continue to be applied to complex geological and mining situations for which they were never intended nor designed. The source and magnitude of the resulting errors, conflicts and inefficiencies are not always obvious, however, they can have far-reaching effects on the efficiency and profitability of mining operations.The conclusions support a rapidly growing demand by industry for practical, precise modelling technology which eliminates the deficiencies and can be applied with confidence to evaluation, design, planning and control of mine production in all situations. Part 2 describes new technology which has evolved in response to these industry pressures and has already been successfully applied to complex mining situations. This new technology can aptly be described as appropriate technology for the 1990s."

The beginning of the electroforming technology dates itself on the beginning of the industrial revolution 1800 to 1820 approximately. Basis was the existence of electricity in order to be able to drive the electro-form-process. With the development of the electroforming, big names of the science-history, like Michael Faraday (1791? 1867), Sir Humphry Davy (1778?1829), Max Schlöter (1878?1946), Werner von Siemens (1816?1892), and many others. Already about 1840, the first monograph originated to electroforming (38). While in the first years the electro-forming most extensive only to the coating of art - or other usefulness-objects was used. At the beginning of the 20th century the formation of objects from pure metals became more and more, later also from alloys to application. One of the first bigger electroforming factory, the ?Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik? was working 1894 in Geislingen / Steige, Germany. In the industrial application, the electroforming-technology is to be imagined away for miscellaneous coatingtasks and the form-body-preparation no longer today (18). A little bit confusing is the german name ?galvano-technology?. It based on the Italian physiologist and naturalist Luigi Galvani (1737 ? 1798). This technically seen is however wrong, right, the name is electroforming. The physical bases were founded mainly by Michael Faraday and Sir Humphry Davy.

"In recent years, there has become a growing interest toward a better understanding of balance rope behaviour. With this in mind, the auth or will present a comprehensive summary of field experience, as well as conclusions. In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.IntroductionThe first friction hoist was designed in Belgium in J862 by Lemielle. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. However, sometimes balance ropes which are 5 to 10070 heavier than the head ropes are employed. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

Creep tests were carried out for friction welded joints of AZ31 magnesium alloy rods under an ambient atmosphere at temperatures between 423 and 573K. Tensile tests were also performed at temperature from room to 573K. The obtained results were compared with those of the base metal. AZ31 extruded rods of 19 mm in diameter were joined by brake type friction welding machine. Creep and tensile specimens were machined out of the welded rods. The tensile strength of the joints was almost the same as that of the base metal at room temperature. However, joint efficiencies of welded joints were about 92% at above 373K. The elongation of welded joints was lower than those of base metal. The welded joints showed appreciably higher minimum creep rate and shorter rupture time than the base metal at all the tested temperatures and initial creep stresses. Creep and tensile rupture of the joints always occurred at near the weld interface. Thus, friction welded joints of AZ31 alloy showed lower creep and tensile strength than the base metal at elevated temperature.

"The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

The networks of interdependencies between elements in building projects, referred to as the project topology, are often complex and difficult for project teams to comprehend. It is hypothesized that a graphbased model of the project topology can be based on existing data in Building Information Models (BIM), facilitating the application of graph-theoretic algorithms to analyze this topology. The objective of this study is to propose an outline for the synthesis of BIM and graph theory. This synthesis is expected to contribute to the development of new tools for representing, managing and analyzing the design of building projects.

"In bedded deposits such as coal or sedimentary iron, economic limits of mineable reserves are clearly defined by the footwall of the seams or ore-bearing units. Where open pits are developed in dipping strata, a long, high footwall slope may result. In many cases, unbenched slopes excavated along the base of the lowest mineable seam are operationally simple, economically desirable and geotechnicalty practical, although a variety of failure mechanisms may develop. This paper examines the engineering geology and rock mechanics parameters of importance in the design of footwall slopes. Possible failure mechanisms and stability analysis methods are described. Design considerations for benched and unbenched slopes are discussed with prime consideration given to development of long high stopes without benches or with a minimum number of benches. IntroductionIn bedded deposits, the ultimate depth and economic viability of an open pit in dipping strata may be controlled by the design of the footwall slope. The stability and, hence, design of footwall slopes is strongly influenced by the engineering geology and rock mechanics parameters of the slope forming materials. A clear understanding of the structural geology, engineering geology and tectonic history of the deposit is essential to assess the behaviour of the slope. This is particularly important for long high, unbenched footwall slopes such as shown in Photo I.A rational footwall slope design requires identification and assessment of all possible slope failure mechanisms with respect to the proposed slope geometry. Stability analyses of each potential failure mechanism are used to identify the main controls on slope stability and to develop appropriate slope design criteria. The optimum slope design is based on the most economic and geotechnically practical slope geometry with due consideration of operational constraints and of the possible advantages of specific remedial measures."

Narrow veins are an important world-wide source of silver, tin, uranium and particularly gold. To potential ?nanciers, this style of mineralization is viewed as high risk because of the often relatively small resource involved and high cost of estimation. In many cases diamond core drilling will not enable resource estimation beyond the inferred and indicated categories. Exploratory under-ground development is required to de?ne measured resources. The de?nition of geological and grade continuity are major factors in narrow vein assessment. A measured resource must be based on strong geological and grade continuities. Narrow veins, generally less than 3 m wide, are complex geological phenomena, which commonly display unpredictable geometry and grade distribution. Variations in structural continuity, dip, strike, width, mineralogy and speci?c gravity are common. Veins may be composite, with ore-grade mineralization restricted to a speci?c structural domain. Branches, intersections and braided zones are common features. Potentially high-grade zones are often localized within ore shoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade regions. Resources must be determined as closely as possible to reality and re?ect the distribution of the commodity in the rock. Estimation has three main requirements: (1) geological study to determine orebody nature;(2) estimation of tonnage and grade, and (3) the presentation of this information using a classi?cation that is clear, unambiguous and bankable. Estimation methods employed are either classical or geostatistical; however, classical methods are often used because of the dif?culties in applying geo-statistics. Grades generally show a strong positively skewed distribution testifying the presence of high-grade values. Problems exist in the applicability of cutting outlier values risking over- or under-estimation of grade. It is generally believed that where resource estimates are in error, poor geological control is usually the cause. Overestimation can lead to the closure of a mine through lost revenue and capital. An understated estimate can result in an opportunity missed for pro?t and/or greater economies of scale. De?nition of reserves involves the consideration of economic and engineering data, to decide which part of the resource is economically mineable. Abstract-Narrow veins are an important world-wide source of silver, tin, uranium and particularly gold. To potential financiers, this style of mineralization is viewed as high risk because of the often relatively small resource involved and high cost of estimation. In many cases diamond core drilling will not enable resource estimation beyond the inferred and indicated categories. Exploratory underground development is required to define measured resources. The definition of geological and grade continuity are major factors in narrow vein assessment. A measured resource must be based on strong geological and grade continuities. Narrow veins, generally less than 3 m wide, are complex geological phenomena, which commonly display unpredictable geometry and grade distribution. Variations in structural continuity, dip, strike, width, mineralogy and specific gravity are common. Veins may be composite, with ore-grade mineralization restricted to a specific structural domain. Branches, intersections and braided zones are common features. Potentially high-grade zones are often localized within ore shoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade regions. Resources must be determined as closely as possible to reality and reflect the distribution of the commodity in the rock. Estimation has three main requirements: (1) geological study to determine orebody nature; (2) estimation of tonnage and grade, and (3) the presentation of this information using a classification that is clear, unambiguous and bankable. Estimation methods employed are either classical or geostatistical; however, classical methods are often used because of the difficulties in applying geostatistics. Grades generally show a strong positively skewed distribution testifying the presence of high-grade values. Problems exist in the applicability of cutting outlier values risking over- or underestimation of grade. It is generally believed that where resource estimates are in error, poor geological control is usually the cause. Overestimation can lead to the closure of a mine through lost revenue and capital. An understated estimate can result in an opportunity missed for profit and/or greater economies of scale. Definition of reserves involves the consideration of economic and engineering data, to decide which part of the resource is economically mineable.
