The Division is concerned with physical methods as applied to geo-logical research and mapping. An at-tempt is made to describe long-term goals, illustrated by examples of projects in the fields of aeromagnetic interpretation, palaeomagnetic re-search, Pleistocene and groundwater geophysics, seismic surveying, electromagnetic research and instrument development. Cooperative projects in surveys and research, with universities, private companies and provincial organizations, are frequently undertaken. An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view. HISTORY OF THE DIVISION M AGNETIC, electrical, seismic and gravity methods, as a means of extending the geologist's sphere of observation beyond the head of his hammer, came into wide-spread use for the first time after World ?war I. Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. The Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland consists of a Precambrian core of gneisses and granitic rocks, cut by numerous diabase dykes. This complex is surrounded by an envelope of sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to Carboniferous age. Radiometric dates from two granite masses in the core give a mini-mum age of -945 m.y. (Grenville) for the last major tectonic activity. This Grenville deformation conferred upon the core substantially its present structure which has controlled later events to a marked degree. Block movements of the core, dominantly in a vertical sense, have ex-posed it to erosion at intervals. The nature and distribution of the flanking sedimentary rocks and the present relief of the peninsula suggest four such movements. THE Great Northern Peninsula extends some 150 miles north-northeast from the northwest corner of the main body of the island of Newfoundland. The mechanical properties of Mg-Gd and Mg-Y solid solutions have been studied under uniaxial tension and compression between 4K and 298K. The results reveal that Mg-Gd alloys exhibit higher strength and ductility under tension and compression attributed to the more effective solid solution strengthening effect and grain boundary strengthening. Profuse twinning has been observed under compression, resulting in a material texture with strong dominance of basal component parallel to compression axis. Under tension, twining is less active and the texture evolution is affected mostly by slip. The alloys exhibit pronounced yield stress asymmetry and significantly different work-hardening behaviour under tension and compression. Increasing of Gd and/or Y concentration leads to the reduction of the tension-compression asymmetry due to the weakening of the recrystallization texture and more balanced twinning and slip activity during plastic deformation. The results suggest that under compression of Mg-Y alloys slip is more active than twinning in comparison to Mg-Gd alloys.

The introduction of froth flotation technology in Canada, and in particular, in British Columbia, began not long after it was successfully applied in the Broken Hill mining area of Australia which began around 1905. It proved to be a revolutionary and transformative technology that resulted in marginal operations in copper, lead and zinc becoming profitable in spectacular fashion. The paper presents the technology of both oil flotation and froth flotation in the context of the challenges of the time and its early application in British Columbia at the Le Roi No.2 mine (1903), the Britannia Copper mine (1912), and at the Allenby concentrator of the Copper Mountain mine (1918-19). New-found archival documents indicate the Britannia application to be the first production application of froth flotation for copper ore outside Australia, a claim that is currently made by the Braden mine (now El Teniente) in Chile. Flotation was initially an add-on process following gravity methods but was rapidly shown to be far superior method for the bulk and selective recovery of metal sulphides. Flotation proved particularly successful for the recovery of zinc sulphide (the so-called ‘zinc problem’) which was considered a contaminant at the time. The ‘copper problem’ related to the poor recovery of fine copper sulphide particles that were not amenable to gravity methods. The success of flotation led to changes in both the scale and methods of mining, concentration and smelting in a manner that allowed integrated mining companies to flourish. Many are still with us today. INTRODUCTION The advent of froth flotation in the early 20th century was truly a revolutionary technological development, not only for the mining and metallurgical industries, but arguably more so for business and society overall. The Canadian technology historian Jeremy Mouat stated (1996) “The development of flotation was the greatest single metallurgical improvement of the modern era...it is not overstating the case to claim that flotation was of central importance to the smooth functioning of the global economy”. It should, therefore, be a story of interest to us all. The aim of this paper is not to retell the full story, that has been well covered by others (Hoover, 1912; Rickard, 1916a; Hines & Vincent, 1961; Lynch et al., 2010) but rather to add some Canadian perspective and the key role played by companies and individuals in those early days, focusing on events in British Columbia’s copper industry. EARLY DEVELOPMENTS During the later half of the 19th century, a number of flotation-related patents were issued. These include the 1860 patent (Britain) granted to William Haynes for a process to separate sulphides from ground ore by mixing it with oil (1-10% wt) followed by a separation process in a water-filled vessel; the 1877 patent granted to Georg and Adolph Bessel (Germany) for a process involving the mixing of oil and graphite ore followed by boiling in water to produce a high grade graphite froth (>90% carbon); and the 1885 patent granted to Rebecca ‘Carrie’ Everson for the separation of sulphides by mixing sulphide ore with small quantities of oil, and adding water followed by sulphuric acid. These processes are more properly referred to as bulk oil flotation due to the relatively large quantity of hydrocarbon used.

The results of laboratory tests on iron precipitation from non-decopperized nickel anolyte are discussed. The parameters (pH, oxygen consumption and stirring speed) for iron precipitation from the anolyte, using the oxygen in the air, were determined. In the experiments conducted under optimized conditions, the residual concentration of iron in the anolyte after precipitation was 0.7-2.7 mg/L, and the copper and nickel losses to the solid phase were 0.05-0.07% and 0.05-0.16%, respectively. The filtration ability of the iron slurry obtained was 2 to 5 times higher as compared to that after chlorine oxidation and oxyhydrolysis. The leaching of the non-ferrous metals from the iron cake made using the separate nickel anolyte purification process was possible by dissolution in sulphuric acid. It was established that after cobalt precipitation from the copper- and iron-depleted anolyte, the precipitates obtained had lower ratios of Fe:Co and Ni:Co.

"During the excavation of underground galleries in a rock mass, reorganisation of the stress field around the site results in damage to the surrounding material. In the framework of research undertaken at the ANDRA underground laboratory in France, galleries have been excavated in a Callovo-Oxfordian argillite formation. The damage has manifest as a number of fracture systems in the adjacent rock. Observations have shown that fractures generated during excavation and storage exploitation are able to self-seal during re-saturation of the site in the post-closure stage. Although indirect evidence for argillite self-sealing has previously been reported, from experiments performed both in situ and on samples, no direct observations of self-sealing have yet been made.For the present study, we performed a range of self-sealing experiments using a newly-developed triaxial compression cell placed within a nano-CT scanner with a 10 µm resolution. The body of the compression cell is X-ray transparent, allowing sample healing to be monitored directly. The samples contained an artificial fracture that had been generated in the laboratory, into which a fluid was injected. The fractures were orientated either perpendicular or parallel to the plane of anisotropy of the material. Our initial results demonstrate that when fluid is injected perpendicular to the plane of anisotropy, the flow-rate has no apparent influence on the kinetics of fracture closure. Permeability varies significantly, from 2.10-14 to 2.10-18 m2 over 116 hours. Post-test observations of the fracture lips show swelling that appears to be orientated perpendicular to the fracture plane and therefore parallel to the plane of anisotropy. Initial results for an injection parallel to the plane of anisotropy suggest that, in this case, the rate of flow affects the kinetics of fracture closure. For a flow-rate of 0.25 ml/min, closure begins after around one minute. In contrast, for a rate of 0.05 ml/min, it is necessary to wait several minutes before partial sealing of the zone is observed. The reduction in permeability is again significant, from 2.10-15 to 4.10-18 m2 over 96 hours. After completion of the test, swelling was observed in elongated zones that lie parallel to the fracture plane and therefore to the plane of anisotropy."

AZ31B-H24 Mg alloy sheets with a thickness of 2 mm were friction stir lap welded (FSLWed) at two tool rotational rates of 1000 and 1500 rpm and two welding speeds of 10 and 20 mm/s. The tensile behavior of the FSLWed AZ31B-H24 Mg alloy was then evaluated at low (-40°C), room (25°C), and high (180°C) temperatures. It was observed that the failure load increased with decreasing tool rotational rate and increasing welding speed. The maximum failure load occurred at a tool rotational speed of 1000 rpm and a welding speed of 20 mm/s at all temperatures tested. It was also noticed that at the high test temperature, the samples failed along the sheet interface, i.e. shear fracture. At the low and room temperatures, the samples failed on the advancing side (AS) of the top sheet near the interface between thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and stir zone (SZ). The different modes of fracture observed are associated with the hooking defect.

"The Dollard oil field in southwestern Saskatchewan is a stratigraphic trap of irregular shaped perimeter. The reservoir is a low-angle monoclinal structure with a dip of approximately 100 feet in 5 miles from west to east across the long axis of the reservoir. Production of. 23° API gravity crude is obtained from a Jurassic sand referred to as the J-2-A, at an approximate depth of 4,500 feet. Reservoir studies and fluid analyses revealed that the crude is highly undersaturated, having a solution GOR of approximately 130 cubic feet of gas per barrel, that the reservoir has no definable water table, and that it appears to be of a closed-boundary type. Oil production was marked by a rapid pressure decline and it was soon evident that the greatest ultimate recovery would be best obtained if the natural driving energy of the reservoir were augmented by some artificial energy source. In support of a pressure maintenance programme, studies were conducted on flood-pot recoveries of large-diameter cores, and a potentiometric model study of the field was made. These studies indicated that a successful water flood would be obtained. The Dollard field was unitized in 1955 and pressure maintenance started in March 1956."

The precipitation of hematite from ferric sulphate - cupric sulphate - lithium chloride acidic solutions was studied in a batch reactor. The effect of several variables on the extent of hematite precipitation as well as on its crystallinity and purity was investigated. The variables studied include: initial ferric concentration (1.5 - 30 g/L), retention time (0 - 12 h), initial sulphuric acid concentration (0 - 30 g/L), temperature (150 - 220 °C) and chloride concentration (0 - 25 g/L). The results show that hematite is preferentially precipitated at lower initial iron concentrations. Longer retention times increased the fraction of hematite in the precipitates but did not affect its crystallinity to a significant extent. On the other hand, higher temperatures increased the purity and crystallinity of the hematite. At lower acid concentrations hematite and goethite were precipitated. However, only hematite was precipitated when the initial acid concentration was > 12.5 g/L. Better crystalline hematite was formed at lower acidities. Increasing chloride concentration increased the amount of hematite and decreased the amount of iron sulphate hydroxide phases, but did not affect the crystallinity of the hematite.

This paper describes the trends in recent years in explosives formulated to produce larger blast-hole spacings and over-all lower drilling and blasting costs in hard formations. A consideration of current rotary drilling costs per ft of hole and per ton of muck versus hole diameter indicates that it is now possible that we shall see much further use of lower-energy-content, lower-cost slurries and dry mixes, and larger-diameter and, in many instances, cheaper blast holes. These will be drilled on current or slightly larger blast patterns to yield the same energy input per ton of rock and similar fragmentation at lower costs.

BEFORE discussing some of the technical aspects of the steam generating plants of Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, it might be of interest to go back through history and see the development of steam generation in this public utility. Back around 1902 Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, had three slide-valve engines in-stalled at its Water Street, Halifax, generating station for a total capacity of 1,800 kilowatts. The plant remained at about this size until 1910 and in 1911 a 2,000 kilowatt steam turbine was installed to raise the total capacity of the plant to 3,800 kilowatts. In 1916, a 3,000 kilowatt turbine was installed and one of the slide-valve engines was removed to make a total plant capacity of 6,200 kilowatts. The total demand in the Company's service 8rea was at that time 4,000 kilo-watts.

For some years, the mining industry has been consistently delivering returns below the market average. One of the causes is a disconnect between what is perceived to drive value creation by many industry analysts and senior corporate executives, and what actually drives the intrinsic value of mining operations. The perverse effect is that strategies that should increase value are perceived to have the potential to drive share prices down, and vice versa. This paper challenges common perceptions of what drives a mining company?s value. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the key drivers of value in the market, and hence in many boardrooms, are such things as increasing the reserves and production rate, and reducing unit operating cost. However, while the quoted reserves may satisfy ore reserves reporting code requirements to be economic, this does not imply that they are optimal. Often, a proportion of the quoted reserve reduces the potential value of the operation. Metal price increases, increased production rates, and operating cost reductions are all seen as conditions or actions that can improve value, and lead to cutoff grade reductions, thereby increasing ore reserves. However, modern cutoff theory and studies conducted by the author and his colleagues show clearly that, while breakeven cutoff grades will fall in these circumstances, optimum cutoffs may be much less volatile, and may even increase. Results from case studies indicate that value is maximised by right-sizing, not maximising, the production capacities, and by optimising the cutoff strategy. Values of many existing underground mining operations can be increased significantly by a substantial cutoff grade increase. Also, an increase in downside risk, and hence reduced returns, can occur using typical life-of-mine planning strategies if prices received are lower than predicted. Since this is often the case, low industry returns may be a direct result of typical strategic mine planning processes. Relatively simple cost-effective techniques are available to provide senior decision makers with information needed to assess the tradeoffs between their many conflicting corporate goals, and the balance between risk and reward. Often this information is not being generated at all. If it is, decisions affecting the value of the company are occurring by default at relatively low levels within the hierarchy, with senior executives apparently unaware of them or their potential impact. The paper concludes that without a re-evaluation of the way mining projects are valued, to demand proven value optimisation from mining plans by boards and mining analysts, the industry will continue to deliver below average returns.

"The Sigma gold deposit is in a band of deformed metavolcanic rocks that are cut by an irregular mass of porphyritic diorite and by narrow undeformed feldspar porphyry dykes. The gold is in veins consisting mainly of quartz and tourmaline with minor pyrite, carbonate, chlorite, scheelite and free gold. The results presented here concern the structural setting of the ore and are based on a study of the mode of emplacement.Two principal types of veins have been recognized: subvertical and oblique veins. Both types are contemporaneous, mechanically linked and postdate regional deformation. The sub-vertical veins are composed of numerous mineralized lenses that occupy the central part of ductile shear zones of great lateral and vertical extent. Normally, several lenses occur in the same shear zone. The vein material seems to have resulted from incremental filling of openings by repeated vertical movement along rupture planes developed in the central part of the shear zones.The oblique veins are small elliptical lenses of ribboned vein material which formed essentially by progressive vertical opening of oblique fractures. Two types of oblique veins are known: one is restricted to feldspar porphyry dykes, within which they are arranged in an en-echelon fashion; the other is of greater extent and is not restricted to one rock type, but tends, however, to occur in the more competent porphyritic diorite.Vein orientation and mode of formation suggest that both sub-vertical and oblique veins developed during progressive deformation associated with the formation of the ductile shear zones. The latter probably formed in response to a compression that took place late in the tectonic history of the host rocks at Sigma."

A sulphide zinc concentrate (Zn-40%) has been leached in sulphuric and chloride media to optimize the conditions for the recovery of zinc and copper. Previous results showed that extractions of 95% zinc and 20% copper can be achieved in just one stage, after two hours of leaching at 80°C with a solution 0.5M in Fe2(SO4)3 and H2SO4 and a solid/liquid ratio of 5%. This work presents the results obtained in the leaching experiments carried out in sulphuric and chloride media using two and three crosscurrent stages and a countercurrent process simulation for a solid/liquid ratio of 10%.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is one of the most serious and potentially enduring environmental problems of the mining industry. High liability costs carried by many mining companies to cover potential obligations of ARD are a clear indication of the gravity of the problem. Unchecked, ARD can result in water quality impacts that could well be the industry's most significant financial and credibility risk. Effectively preventing acid drainage is a formidable challenge that requires the total commitment of the mining industry throughout the entire life-cycle of a mine. To achieve this commitment a strong business case for ARD prevention must be developed. This paper will address the elements of acid prevention and discuss their importance not only to the company but the entire industry as well. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is an industry-led group created to help meet this challenge. In 2009, INAP published the GARD Guide (www.gardguide.com), a web-base best practices guide for the prevention of ARD [1]. In this paper, the GARD Guide will be used to identify preventative actions for all mining industry stakeholders. It will, in turn, be used to estimate ARD management and mitigation value accrued to the company from ARD prevention, which will be used in developing a business case for acid prevention.

THE solid fuel industry, especially that branch represented by bituminous coal, is gradually becoming aware of its ? paramount importance in a world where there is an ever increasing demand for the products of a mechanical age. In practically every process of manufacture, the necessity for energy in some form is being multiplied. Some of that prime energy is derived from water power-hydro-electric schemes, flood control schemes, etc. - but often the electrical energy thus developed is generated at great distances from the load centres, requiring long transmission lines with consequent transformer and transmission losses. A few plants have harnessed the tidal power of the seas and one has harnessed the energy of the wind in a modern manner. All of these schemes are dependent on certain natural geographical, hydrographical, and physical advantages of terrain, as well as an adequate area of consumption of the energy developed. If flood control is the primary object, then power generation is a by-product; and the economics of large capital expenditure on power generating equipment must be considered in that light.

Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to discuss a number of the metallurgical improvements in the technology of copper-nickel ore treatment which have been introduced during recent years in the plants of ?the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. In common with other ore treatment processes, the procedure for extracting nickel and copper is changing almost continuous! y. These changes are necessitated by reason of changes in ore grades and characteristics, rising material and labour charges, and the constant drive to maximize metal recovery and to minimize production costs. It is not possible to present a comprehensive list of all the changes made, and only a selected number of the improvements in the milling, smelting, and refining operations are covered. It should be clearly understood that some phases of the procedures described have been pioneered by others in kindred fields and due acknowledgment is given to their foresight and efforts. Articles have been published over the years describing the operations of the International Nickel Company plants and the reader is referred to the Engineering and Mining Journal, Vol. 130, No. 9, November 10th, 1930, and to the Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 58, No. 11, November, 1937, and Vol. 67, No. 5, May, 1946.
