The purpose of blasting during mining is to produce a muck pile that can be efficiently loaded and transported. There is an increasing awareness of the variation in muck pile characteristics and its economic implications. It is well known that good fragmentation by itself is not sufficient to optimise the muck loading efficiency. The swelling and configuration of the muck pile also significantly affect the productivity of the loading equipment. The characteristics of a muck pile depend upon the blast design parameters, explosive properties and rock mass geology. This study has focused on the dependence of muck pile configuration on blast design parameters, explosive properties and size distribution of the muck.The field work was done in two phases. In the first phase 12 blasts were monitored, while in the second, three blasts were monitored. The blast design parameters and explosive properties for each blast were documented and the following muck pile characteristics were measured:muck pile height and its distance from the facedistance of throwwidth of the power troughsize distribution by image analysis technique.The effects of burden, bench height, heave energy of explosive, row-to-row delay, powder factor and the mean particle size of the fragments on muck pile configuration were examined. It was observed that muck pile height and distance of throw are strongly influenced by the burden, bench height, heave energy of the explosive and the size distribution of the muck. The width of the power trough depends upon the row-to-row delay, powder factor and total burden. Ways in which technology has been introduced into the industry are discussed, as are the means by which the general process of technology transfer takes place. Some possible sources of improved and new technology are considered, together with the constraints to its introduction into the industry. The paper reviews the legislation con- trolling respirable dust monitoring for risk assessment purposes, it discusses the actions taken to introduce gravimetric sampling in collieries and it summarises the proposed guidelines. In conclusion, some of the results of dust surveys conducted in accordance with the proposed strategy are discussed.

The Mineral Science Laboratory of the Government Chemical Laboratories has recently investigated various procedures for the analysis of the platinum group metals (PGMs). This investigation covered a number of methods for the extraction and preconcentration'of the PGMs from a wide range of geological materials. The nickel sulphide extraction technique proved to be overall the most applicable procedure. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETA-AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were examined for their suitability in analysing platinum group metals in solution. ETA-AAS and ICP-MS proved to be the instruments of choice due to their low detection limits.

The discovery of magmatic nickel sulfide mineralisation within the Musgrave Block of Central Australia, in a region which has received virtually no exploration since the early 1970s, promoted a pegging rush throughout the region and provided a significant boost to the investor interest in resources sector companies. The discovery proved a significant success for the application of generic models for major magmatic nickel-copper sulfide deposits. The entry of junior explorers to the region is the principal mechanism by which the region will be explored, although significant social and physical challenges will impact on the ability of explorers to maintain investor confidence in the region.

Clearly visible in geophysics is a trend away from simply finding and drilling anomalies obtained with off-the-shelf equipment, condes- cendingly sold by travelling salesmen. Instead, technical tools are becoming available which allow us to choose or design equipment and sur- vey procedures for the specific problem at hand. The advent of micro- and smaller computers enable us to collect more and better measure- ments and to rapidly process them so as to emphasize the features which are being sought. These new capabilities have important consequ- ences both to the extent to which geophysical tools will be applied in the industry, and to the skills which will be demanded of those using them. Because of its uniquely difficult exploration problems, Australia must expect to amplify its new prominence in the development of mining geophysical technology.

The equilibrium phase relations in the Fe- Mn-Ti-0-S system were established at 1380 and 1485 K. The elemental distributions between the equilibrium phases were obtained by chemical- ly analysing selected samples from the phase study. The results are considered in relation to the coal reduction process for upgrading ilmenite. The beneficial effect of adding sulfur to a kiln that uses a manganese-rich feed is ex- plained by the formation of a metal-sulfide solid-solution phase that removes part of the manganese from the oxide system. The optimum conditions for operating the reduction kiln are determined, and the practical need to operate the kiln at other than optimum conditions is explained. It is shown how the experimental data can be used to predict the best compromise conditions for reduction and the resultant purity of the product.

ZC Mines investigated a proposal to replace the present underground train haulage system with rear dump trucks. The number of rear dump trucks required to achieve target output and the required mix of trains and trucks during the changeover was of importance to the designers, and a GPSS computer simulation model of the operation was constructed using GPSS/PC, a recent form of the language for the personal computer. Three models were 'constructed to simulate initial and final configurations of underground haulage systems to transport ore from ore passes to the crusher and then to the skip for transport to the surface. The initial model simulated train operation on two levels and rear dump truck operation on a third level. The second model simulated rear dump truck operation on two levels with ore being loaded through the crusher to the skip as in the previous case. The third model replaced the rear dump trucks on the lower level with a train to establish the relative merits of the two methods of transport. The simulations identified equipment numbers, required operating hours and critical points in the operation which can then be addressed by the mine designers.

In recent times there has been a marked increase in public awareness of air pollution. Some of this has been induced by the Press but our own senses tell us that there is a visible haze over our cities on many mornings. The people are now demanding a clean environment and will no longer tolerate smoke and dust fall or gaseous and odorous emission which either soil building and furnishings or interfere with comfort and well being.

Since the introduction of the Neil George Five Point Safety System, to the underground sections of The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines in March, 1969, the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate has been halved and shows signs of contin- uing to fall. The total accident frequency rate has also fallen, although the decrease has not been as significant. Before the introduction of the Neil George Safety System, analyses of the direct causes of accidents showed that approx- imately 25 per cent were caused by "unsafe conditions", while 75 per cent were attribu- table to "unsafe acts". Within twelve months of introducing the system, these percentages had significantly changed to 7 per cent unsafe conditions and 93 per cent unsafe acts. Today, the figures are 3 per cent and 97 per cent respectively, and these figures clearly show that the main emphasis in the current programme must be directed towards making the operating men safety conscious. The effort must be focused on changing the minds of men.

The Kalkadoon Granite is regarded as composite in character with at least two different phases. The older phase is considered older than the sediments of the Western Geosyncline, and the younger phase is considered younger than the sediments of the Western Geosyncline.Consequently, the older phase could be a time equivalent of the Ewen Granite, whereas the younger phase could not. An age of 1760 million years seems plausible for the older phase, and an age of 1540 millionyears seems appropriate for the younger phase.

Utah Development Company began prospecting for coking coal in 1961 and Blackwater Mine became a reality in June 1967. Exploratory and develop- ment drilling has been a continuing effort and reserves have been assessed at several stages. Some of the history of exploration and reserves assessment is given and practices in drilling, sampling and testing are described, particularly in regard to objectives of drilling and reserves estimation. The current methods for calculation of reserves are described and some comment is made regarding use of the data in mine blending control and plant operation including correla- tion of results.

This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

This paper illustrates that sampling problems and difficulties are as common in an R&D environment as they are in an operating plant. Researchers need to be aware of the potential influence of poor sampling practices and when feasible determine the sampling and analytical precision at the start of any experimentation. Specific problems that have been encountered are discussed and the procedures implemented to overcome these difficulties are described. Examples from projects include the cyanidation of a Au/Ag ore, column leaching of refractory gold and oxide ores, the bioremediation of contaminated sites and the flotation of ore containing native copper.
