The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

At Yucca Mountain, USA, a tunnel is being built according to nuclear quality standards. It has proved possible to meet very high quality demands while at the same time achieving high advance rates. To be able to do this, routines on how to record and store quality related information have been established. This has meant that a new philosophy has entered the tunnelling industry. Especially for nuclear waste projects, of which Yucca Mountain is one of the first ones to be built, the experiences made and the quality assurance program established will be of great importance for future projects. The paper gives examples of what the Nuclear Quality Assurance system has meant in practice for the tunnelling at Yucca Mountain. And, it also explains why a non-grouted bolt, Super Swellex-, was chosen for long-term reinforcement in the tunnels which might host nuclear waste for thousands of years.

A Data Acquisition System with a capacity to monitor 2000 analog instruments has been installed at the mines operated by the Zinc Lorporation, Limited and New broken hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/LVbHC), New South Wales, Australia. Since commissioning in March, 1982, the system has proved its value in providing up-to-date information to both Rock Mechanics and Mining personnel. The paper describes the function of the major software and hardware components of the system, and identifies the advantages that an on-line monitoring system provides in the day-to-day operation of a large underground mine.

The Sovereign prospect in the lower Waitekauri Valley of the southern Hauraki Goldfield occurs in daciterhyolite flows and volcanic breccias of the Waipupu Formation. The lower Waitekauri Valley contains a series of NE to NNE-trending normal faults, and the Sovereign prospect lies in a NW-striking graben. The structure of the Sovereign prospect is complex. NE to NNE-trending veins and normal faults dominate the area, however WWNW and N to S-trending structures occur locally. Kinematic analysis of these structures indicates predominantly dip-slip movement, with a local strike-slip component. At least two sets of veins occur in the area: 1.        steeply dipping veins; and 2.       low angle veins, which cross-cut and locally offset the steeper dipping        vein set. Mineralization appears to have formed during normal faulting in an extensional regime.

The present study concerns a new type of mixer-settler unit where coalescence is promoted by means of the phase inversion method (MSPI). Using two different systems (alkaline etching solution û LIX 54 in kerosene and acidic aqueous solution û LIX 984 in kerosene) the influence of the total flowrate, the A/O phase ratio and the hydrodynamic conditions in the nozzles of the scattering device on the extraction and separation efficiencies are studied. Two modes of operation are clearly outlined and a theoretical model predicting the separation efficiency is proposed and compared to experimental results. A comparison between mixer-settlers with classic decanters and the MSPI unit has demonstrated the advantages of the latter where throughputs in the range 20 -25 m3.m-2h-1 can be easily realised.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the. upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, miuus what is taken up by the rivers land streams-is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area oE the district is 2,417,299 acres.The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea, and Waiwakaiho. Mount Egmont, which is 8260 ft. high, used to be called Taranaki, and from it the district takes its name (the Maori meaning of which is "sloping peak ").

In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

Solid Energy New Zealand operates the Stockton Opencast Coal Mine, a unique deposit consisting of high quality hard coking and thermal coals. Stockton's uniqueness includes high variability of the shipment specifications, strict quality constraints, minimal stockpiling capacity in the coal transport chain and the variability of coal quality both vertically within the seam and laterally across the deposit. The process of resource proving and modelling results in a high level of understanding of the deposit to allow detailed planning to be undertaken. The use of computer aided mine planning tools is an important component of the mine planning at Stockton. Detailed planning is implemented in the field through selective mining practices and monitoring to minimise dilution and maximise recovery of the coal resource. The quality variability in the coal, the æjust in timeÆ approach of the coal transport chain and markedly varying quality specifications from shipment to shipment requires a large coal inventory and the mine to be driven by quality constraints rather than material movement capacities.

Tyre cost at Mount Morgan Limited had been 24% of the truck operating cost. Comprehensive tyre testing resulted in a reduction in tyre costs of about one third. A record of the evaluation techniques may enable the selection of tyres that are most suited to particular conditions. Rubber characteristics, rubber quantity, tyre design, road conditions, dump conditions and inflation pressure were found to be sig- nificant variables. Measurements of tyre temperatures at the breaker strip were used to select the tyre design and inflation pressure required for Mount Morgan Limited's conditions. Relugging of tyres was discontinued as a result of tyre testing.

The choice between drill and blast and mechanical boring methods is often not obvious. There are several factors which may have a de- cisive influence on this choice, such as the geometry and length of the tunnel, site con- ditions and borability of the rock. Both the un- confined compression strength and the joint dis- tance have a considerable influence on the net penetration rate. Site conditions, rock quality and water conditions influence the utilization of the tunnel boring machine. The drill and blast method is normally less sensitive to devi- ations from assumed ground conditions.

Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

æMine to MillÆ improvement involves optimising the chain of rock breakage processes from the in situ rock in the mine to the output of the concentrator. A growing number of paper studies and case histories from metalliferous mines (AusIMM, 1998; JKMRC, 1998; Clark and Scott, 2002) demonstrate that generating more breakage in the pit and the primary crusher can lead to benefits to milling that result in significant improvements to the economic performance of a mining project. However, unless the ævalueÆ of doing this (benefit over cost?) can be appropriately quantified, the approach cannot be effectively managed and the increases in blasting and monitoring costs cannot be justified.Mining operations have traditionally been organised into the separate departments of geology, mining and processing based on the specialist skills required and the different professional disciplines involved. Process optimisation across these boundaries has commonly been frustrated by management requirements to minimise the costs incurred by each department without adequate reference to the ævalueÆ being created. Companies have tended to discard positions that provide a technical over-view of the value chain, reducing the number of people with the opportunity to influence practices across these process boundaries.This paper discusses these issues and identifies measures required to quantify and manage the ævalueÆ provided by æMine to MillÆ improvement generated by the intense blasting of ore.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

A regional scale prospectivity model was developed for Papua New Guinea (PNG) to identify areas of porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Weights of evidence modeling techniques were used to determine spatial correlations between porphyry Cu-Au mines and predictive maps created from available spatial data. These predictive maps were then combined into a final prospectivity map. Despite limited regional scale data the model has successfully identified areas of known porphyry mineralisation as prospective and has also identified areas where new mineralised systems may be discovered with further exploration. Sheet flotation is a new two dimensional column flotation cell that produces continuous spectrum of products. Analogous to a shaking table in its performance and analysis, sheet flotation is a sheet of bubbles rising through packing contained between two walls. Feed enters the sheet at the lower left and the product exit along the top and right edges. Iligh grade materials exit at the top left, middlings exit at the top right comer and low grade waste materials exit at the bottom right. As in the case of a shaking table, two motions are required: up and right. Bubbles furnish the upwards movement for hydrophobic particles, slanted packing the rightward movement for hydrophilic particles. The sheet flotation cells is analysed as a 40 x 40 array of simple cells. In practice, 1000 x 1000 arrays of simple cells may be expected. With larger arrays, excellent separations may be expected. Due to ongoing demand and increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, Australian iron ore producers are developing smaller size deposits to maintain current export levels. The iron grade, mineralogy, chemical and physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from different deposits vary considerably. It is therefore imperative to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of iron ore fines while moving to a larger diversity of smaller deposits. Blending is a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce a high performance sinter mixture displaying the required characteristics from one single ore. Blending is also one of the most effective options being used by iron ore producers to ensure the long-term stability of their products while increasing production. When designing a blend, the blend components are selected to support each other to achieve the required overall balanced metallurgical performance of the final product at a relatively low cost. To do so, a fundamental understanding of the key characteristics of iron ore fines and their potential impacts on the iron ore sintering process and sinter quality are required. In this paper, the sintering process and sinter structure have been analysed and the key factors affecting the sintering performance of iron ore fines, including productivity and quality, identified. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nuclei stability and the volume and properties of the primary sinter melt are believed to have important impacts on both sintering productivity and sinter quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of ore chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics on the key factors identified and in turn the consequences for sintering productivity and sinter quality.

Coal has been mined in New South Wales for nearly 200 years and prior to 1970 the vast majority of this coal was mined from underground mines using bord and pillar or similar systems.Since 1970 there have been two notable changes in coal production trends in New South Wales as can be seen from Figure 1.1. The steady growth in coal mined by open cut methods. Open cut output grew from about seven per cent of the State's output in 1970/71 to 43 per cent in 1990/91.2. The steady growth in coal mined by the longwall method. longwall output grew from negligible amounts in 1970/71 to 48 per cent of underground production in 1990/91. mines operating longwall units produced 61 per cent of underground production in 1990/91.
