The development, piloting and engineering design of an innovative water treatment system for process water produced by a uranium mine mill are described. The process incorporates lime/carbonate softening (Stage 1), reverse osmosis (Stage 2) and biopolishing (Stage 3) to produce water of quality suitable for release to the receiving environment. Comprehensive performance data are presented for each stage. The unique features of the proposed process are: recycle of the lime/CO2 softening sludge to the uranium mill as a neutralant; potential use of power station off-gas for carbonation; and the potential recovery and recycle of ammonia from the RO reject stream.

Adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits have well-documented alteration mineral zonation patterns with distinctive geochemical signatures. Proper use of whole-rock geochemistry can provide useful vectors for exploration and can enhance efforts to characterise and quantify the mineralogy and intensity of hydrothermal alteration.   Analyses of Au and Ag provide the most direct vectors to orebodies, and pathfinder elements such as As, Sb, Hg, Zn, Pb and Se are similarly zoned around at least some orebodies. However, the minerals that contain these elements occur almost exclusively in veins, and therefore identifying geochemical vectors related to wallrock alteration that is zoned outward from orebodies is crucial for effective exploration.   Distal alteration zones contain quartz-illite-chlorite-carbonate-pyrite, whereas samples proximal to veins contain quartz-adularia-pyrite, with lesser though variable illite-chlorite-carbonate. Therefore, adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits show K alteration in their cores. The resulting K-metasomatism can be evaluated in several ways. Areas that have been most intensely altered are commonly characterised by highest K contents, but these results can be complicated by variations in rock type across the prospective area. Potassium mass balance results provide a robust and rigorous assessment of K-metasomatism, however, knowledge about the composition of fresh rocks and correct identification of fresh precursor compositions of altered rocks are required. Three alteration indices provide effective evaluation of K-metasomatism: 1.   the K number, which is the ratio K/(2Ca+K+Na) (molar); 2.   Barrie values [(K2O * 100) / Sr]; and 3.   the Rb/Sr ratio. In most places these provide similar vectors, although K numbers can be complicated by the appearance of hydrothermal calcite and/or albite.   Plots of K/Al vs (2 Ca + K + Na)/Al (molar) allow estimation of the intensity of K-metasomatism and its mineralogical products, thereby complementing traditional XRD and petrographic studies of alteration minerals.

AMC has completed a number of backfill options studies, including several in recent years for large, three-dimensional orebodies involving total extraction by longhole open stoping with backfill. This has led to the development of a thorough review methodology that assists in the selection of the most appropriate backfill system and the most economic mixes to achieve the required performance. A recently developed design tool has simplified the calculation of backfill strengths for various exposure dimensions and automatically determines strengths incrementally over the height of a stope. Using a generic orebody with a plan dimension of 120 m wide by 360 m long, several different stoping layouts have been analysed to determine the effect of stope dimensions and sequencing on backfill strength requirements. This has been done for stope heights from 50 m to 300 m, in 50 m increments. The required strengths have been calculated in slices and summarised for each stope in four equal layers. The average strength requirement for each layout at each stope height has been compared graphically. For all stope heights, a panel stope layout that minimises the proportion of primary stopes results in a lower average strength requirement than grid layouts on a checkerboard pattern. However, for very high stopes, smaller plan dimensions become more economic. The increase in required strength with stope height is non-linear, making taller stopes potentially more attractive. The main cost factor in most backfills is the rate of binder addition, which is closely related to the strength required. By choosing a layout that minimises the backfill strength requirement, significant savings in binder addition rates and overall costs can be achieved. These must, of course, be weighed against other factors to determine the optimum stoping layout and backfill system.

This paper describes a technique to predict achievable head grades and likely variances from target grade for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The block model from which the production schedule is produced was created from a wide spaced drilling program and was classified as an Inferred Resource under the JORC Code. Ideally, production schedules and target grades would be determined using a combination of Proved and Probable reserves. However sometimes it is necessary to consider the requirements of potential off-take parties who have specific grade tolerances. A technique is needed to simulate mining sequences and grade variations early in the planning process, using an æexplorationÆ block model rather than the normal æminingÆ block model. Marketing contracts require examination whether the target grade {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3 can be kept constant, or must be revised during the life of the mine. A model (written in ExcelÖ using Visual Basic macros) develops a feasible, close to optimal, mine plan from block model data. Cut-off grades for minable ore are chosen. The model evaluates ore tonnage, grade and stripping ratio against depth. Outputs at this stage include plots of slices through the orebody, at nominated x, y and z coordinates, showing ore grade, waste, drill hole locations and topography. The model then searches for a feasible satisfactory mine plan. The initial grade target is the average for the identified ore blocks. The available block list (ABL) at any time is the set of ore blocks, any one of which can be mined without removing any other ore block. The entire initial ABL has an unacceptably large ætotal grade stressÆ, defined as [(Grade-Target)/Tolerance]2, summed over the four relevant minerals {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3}. The model trims the ABL, removing the block most harming the total stress. Trimming is repeated until the total grade stress reduces to an acceptable level. The trimmed ABL defines the first mine campaign. Removing the trimmed block set, a second ABL is exposed, which is again trimmed and mined. The process is automatic: a few seconds computation provides a complete mine plan. Re-running the model with adjusted grade limits quickly shows whether a uniform target can be achieved or whether the target must be modified during the mine life.

The year 2000 is not very far ahead - only five years. It should not be hard to forecast what will happen between now and then, because the technologies that will be in practical use then should all be at least in embryo existence now. There has been a historical trend for the mining industry to work ever more difficult and ever more marginal deposits. There are clearly a few exceptions and major discoveries, but the industry is becoming heavily dependent, at both the exploration and the mining stages, on technological innovation to retain acceptable profit margins. With the new exploration and mining technologies come requirements for additional computing support. Computing technology further allows the potential integration of a wide variety of different types of data to help the explorationist to build and test exploration strategies, or to help the miner to design and schedule mining operations.

Day-to-day operating practices at existing operations need provide high quality data for decisions that will impact directly on the potential value of the available resource, in addition to meeting standards of quality expected of data used in feasibility studies that will be completed to obtain additional capital required to finance operational improvements. Drill hole location, down hole survey and assay data standards of accuracy and precision have received considerable attention in recent years. The authors propose that geological descriptions of both cored and non-cored drilling warrant at least equal attention, considering their fundamental role in establishing the framework used for geological modeling and resource estimation. The iron ore deposits of the Middleback Ranges have been a major source of iron ore for almost a century. High-grade hematite-dominant ore is currently mined by OneSteel from three open pit operations supplying ore to the companyÆs integrated steelworks at Whyalla. A review of OneSteelÆs future iron ore resources, commenced in 2002, highlighted the need for more flexible and comprehensive management of all forms of geological data used in resource evaluation. Driving this program was the information needs of feasibility studies of the Iron Magnet deposit, located beneath the existing Iron Duke and Iron Duchess mines. Prior to the beginning of 2003, resource evaluation drilling data collected by OneSteel was managed using an in-house system based on industry standard relational database software. The system was demonstrably effective in ensuring the fundamental integrity of basic drilling data, but lacked necessary capabilities for the acquisition and management of geological descriptions, geotechnical and geophysical data obtained by down-hole logging. OneSteelÆs existing system for the management and interpretation of geological descriptions was restricted to storage of a single three digit code for each lithological description interval. The original logs for a large number of older drill holes could not be located, having been either poorly archived or culled from the database in the belief that they did not contribute to the understanding of the resources currently being mined. The three digit codes represented a combination of lithological and stratigraphic descriptions, including many subtle variations in iron ore colour and texture believed to be associated with variations in geochemistry, but subsequently demonstrated to be either incorrect or inconsistently applied. This resulted in the establishment of a plethora of codes for a relatively small number of distinct lithologies. Improvements implemented by OneSteel geologists addressed these shortcomings by ensuring the new data management system: facilitated the objective description of lithological characteristics; distinguished between obsevations and interpretations (eg lithology versus stratigraphy); promoted consistency between descriptions provided by different geologists; and helped to ensure data integrity by developing an audit trail for alterations made to data subsequent to its acquisition. The data used to develop interpretations of mineralisation distribution and characteristics are fundamental to the effective utilisation of a mineral resource: any mineÆs most important asset. Resource related risk is widely recognised as the principal source of technical risks affecting resource development projects, whether they are new mines or expansions of existing operations. A key lesson from this work is that most commercial or æin-houseÆ developed geological data management systems are able to handle basic data validation tasks effectively. Geologists, however, need to ensure that the data management system is appropriately structured to help promote the acquisition of objective and consistent data for interpretation.

Mineral exploration management has undergone major changes particularly in the last decade. Parallel to these changes in management, and partially responsible for them, have been the changes in governmental laws and regulations at both National and State levels reinforced by a highly competitive climate created by the exploration boom in Australia. The influence of overseas methods and approaches have been married to the Australian techniques resulting in a management climate which is not only familiar with the technical aspects of exploration, but is also familiar with the personnel, economic and legal phases associated with the expenditure of very large sums of money. The utilization of all the geosciences coupled with mathematical models and computer techniques for pre-selection and assessment of areas are now normal aids used in management decisions. Management techniques developed and being developed will ensure that successful exploration will be carried out if sufficient incentives are guaranteed.

The Australian minerals sector has a shortage of skilled professionals to satisfy an industry that is experiencing renewed vitality. Graduate numbers are low throughout Australia and the world, while economic rationalisation is seeing many educational institutions downsize, or even close, their minerals-related programs. In addition to requiring more entry-level graduates, minerals producers are looking to update the skills of their current workforce to keep up with the industryÆs continuing technological revolution. To address the issue the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) endorsed collaboration between several Australian minerals producers and a team of universities to generate the Mineral Tertiary Education Council, or MTEC. MTEC recently initiated a venture to increase the availability of professionals with relevant skills to the minerals industry. Primarily aimed at delivering postgraduate programs, the initiative will allow graduates from other disciplines to æconvertÆ to the minerals sector as well as provide professional development training to an existing work force. This venture represents a novel approach in that courses will be delivered by more than one institution and will employ innovative teaching materials with flexible and remote delivery formats. The programs will cater specially for professional development in the minerals sector, which generally requires high flexibility due to the nature of work conditions and locations.

This paper records the observations of faulting in the Black Star mine workings. By classifying the faults into two groups, i.e., strike faults and transverse faults, and by pointing out the differences between the groups and their effects on the silver-lead-zinc orebodies, a time relationship between the two groups of faults and the sulphide mineralisation is suggested.GENERAL GEOLOGY AND MINERALISATIONFolding and faulting are closely related to the mineralisation in the shales by silver-lead-zinc and iron sulphides.Commonly the various sulphides are fine-grained and closely associated with one another. However, exceptions do occur locally, where massive coarse galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and to a lesser extent chalcopyrite, have been observed singly or closely associated one with the other.In the main, the sulphide mineralisation forming the orebodies occurs as replacement of, and infilling along, the sheared bedding planes of the finely bedded shale host rock.The shales in general strike north-south with an average dip to 60° to the west; strong shearing along the bedding planes is evidenced by much slickensiding and slaty cleavage.Sequences of finely bedded shales of varying stratigraphic thicknesses alternate with very. massive beds, and it is in the more highly sheared thinner beds that the greatest concentration of sulphides occurs. The unmineraIised massive beds of shale, 11 in. up to 12 in. in thickness, occur singly or in groups between, and to a lesser extent. within, the orebodies. The massive beds resisted sulphide replacement and impart to the orebodies a most prominent banded structure.

The theme of this Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is in the form of a question: `Adding Value to our Resources - Our Future?' There are two ways of looking at this question. The first is to assume that any mineral or energy resource is worthless until it is identified, recovered and put on the market. In this sense all our current operations, be they open cut coal mines or aluminium smelters, are engaged in adding value. The question then becomes: what is the future of the minerals and energy resource industries with which we are familiar - will they grow or contract? The second way is to emphasis the value-adding aspect. The question is now one of whether or not our future depends on adding further value to resources we are currently selling.

During October 1947 an Authority to Prospect was granted by the Minister of Mines to lVIount Isa Mines Limited over an area of approximately 75 sq. miles to the north of Mount Isa.Application for the Authority to Prospect had been made after Zinc Corporation Limited had been granted prospecting rights over two areas, one of 1,265 acres immediately to the north of the Mount Isa Mines leases and the other of 1,960 acres adjoining the south end of Mount Isa Mines leases.METHODSAs a means of providing a cheap map of sufficient accuracy on which to plot geological features, both Mount Isa Mines Limited and Zinc Corporation Limited agreed upon aerial photographs and the two companies shared the cost of an aerial photographic survey by Adastra Airways of 130 sq. miles which covered the prospecting areas held by both companies.The photographs were on a scale of 800 ft. to I in. with 60% overlap on the north-south runs and 25% overlap east-west. A set of alternate prints enlarged to 400 ft. to 1 \in. were obtained for field work. The 400 ft. to 1 in. scale unglossed photographs (size 18 in. x 18 in.) were taken On to the field and rock outcrops, and uncorrelated structures were plotted directly on to them in red crayon pencil. The geological observations were then transferred in the office to a tracing on which accuracy of azimuth and scale was controlled by use of a photo mosaic and ground surveys.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density backfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the ætraditionalÆ approach to the preparation of pastefill. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producingpaste/high density backfills. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach.This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material. No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mines in Canada.

IT is intended herein: to make some brief comments on geophysical 'work in general and on the various methods, and then to refer to that branch which, perhaps, is of the greatest importance and interest to the metalliferous mining engineer, i.e., the variousmethods of electrical prospecting.The term geophysics was originally applied to those larger physical and geodetic studies and methods concerned with such purely scientific subjects as the investigation of the true figure of the earth and the determination of the stability relations resultingtherefrom. Applied geophysics and geophysical methods of prospecting are concerned primarily with the search for, and investigation of, useful mineral deposits concealed within the earth's crust and not readily detectable by the normal methods employed bythe mining geologist and prospector. The methods employed have been devised as a result of co-operation between mining men, geologists, and physicists, and, although steady progress has been made during the past 20 years or so, it is within the last four orfive years that the importance of these methods has been acknowledged by the mining world in general. Although many of these methods are still in, or have barely emerged from, the experimental stages, a steadily increasing list of important discoveries is attributable to their employment-more particularly in Europe and America than elsewhere. The various methods have each their own limitations regarding the class of work they can undertake, and no one method is capable of general application. Over the past decade most, if not all participants in the resources sector have been involved in initiatives to improve margins, reduce costs and improve business profitability. In many cases the initiatives undertaken have fallen short of their stated objectives, and in some cases have resulted in the terminal decline of the underlying business. In reviewing why many such initiatives fail, a common theme of arbitrary cost reduction and a focus on minimising cost as opposed to maximising value and cashflow emerges. This paper proposes a structured process that allows mine owners and managers to develop an understanding of their cost structure and optimise production and cost outcomes from the business. The broad objective of cost optimisation is to create value by getting more out of existing and new assets by focussing on operational areas, particularly production and maintenance. The paper uses practical examples to highlight the application of cost driver trees as a mine improvement tool.

The paper briefly summarises the work of the Titanium Research Section in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne and mentions the development of a new electrolytic process for titanium production. This process utilises the "hot-spot" cathode technique and titanium carbide anodes. An introduction is given to three further papers on titanium metallurgy to be presented to the Institute.INTRODUCTIONThe unique combination of strength, lightness and corrosion resistance possessed :by titanium and its, alloy has made them of great interest to engineers. However, high cost, difficulties of production and limited knowledge of techniques of application restrict their usage at present almost exclusively to high priority armaments.The cost of the metal is divided between extraction and processing and much research has been carried out to devise new and cheaper methods for winning the metal from its ores. Processing costs will be reduced when production volume increases.Extraction research is proceeding rapidly overseas and Kellogg (1955, p. 72) reports that 'at least seventeen companies in the U.S.A. are interested in titanium production. Of these, two are producing the metal by a modified Kroll process, three are building Kroll plants and the remainder are in various stages of research activity. The Horizons Corporation alone is contemplating electrolytic extraction and is building a pilot plant. Steinberg et aI. (1955, p. 252, p. 332) have reported the early work done by the HorizonsCorporation on electrolysis of potassium fluotitanate and titanium monoxide in fused salt electrolytes. Of these two, the former appears to be the more attractive process.

The expansive, open cut iron-ore mines in Western Australia typically experience few days of rain per annum, often amounting to less than 250 mm. Unlike mines where rainfall is frequent, they may be less prepared for extreme rainfall events. Such events can cause erosion, flooding and sedimentation, drainage alteration, spoil and stock heaps wetting and effect slope stability. Such impacts may threaten personnel safety, infrastructure, and production. The CRATER (‘Climate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation Results’) framework collates and interprets a mine’s pre-existing data and semi-quantitative information to assess vulnerability to, and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise, flood-related hazard to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue. Outputs assist decision makers to design investment strategies for minimising mining operations’ vulnerability to climate. Previously developed for smaller, wetter mines in Queensland’s coal region, the outputs provide a hot-spot map, fault tree analysis and an assessment of the mine’s capacity to adapt. The multicriteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS), equally suits iron-ore mines’ siteconditions (elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation) to identify critical inundation areas. Hotspot results provide target zones for in-depth fault-tree analysis that, in turn, present a range of sitespecific adaptation options. Rainfall-intensity and the number of rain days since the 1970s have increased over central and eastern parts of the Pilbara Region. While tropical cyclones may become less frequent, they are projected to increase in intensity. Although some parts of the Hamersley Ranges receive more than 500 mm per annum, rainfall in the Pilbara is generally very low. Therefore, experience of the impacts of extreme rainfall events in the constantly changing topography of Western Australia’s iron ore region may be sparse. Minimising potential effects can be proactively assisted using CRATER.

The measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations is a key responsibility of geotechnical and mining engineers. A critical aspect of these roles is to ensure there is sufficient ground support capacity for the expected demand.Current methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability-limits require measuring displacement at distinct points, or using visual observations. These current methods limit the assessment to a qualitative interpretation of deformation across the entire excavation.Recent advancements of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDar) technology permit a new method for monitoring deformation that allow a full 3D image of extended sections of an excavation to be precisely scanned. The results from the comparison with subsequent scans provide valuable information on the magnitude, direction and extent of regions exceeding the ground support serviceability-limits. This new method now provides a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation being monitored.The implementation of regular scanning has been demonstrated to be highly advantageous not only at mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid seismic induced deformation. The use of LiDar technology as a routine deformation measurement tool for geotechnical and mining engineers (and further applications) are discussed in more detail in this paper.CITATION:Jones, E and Beck, D, 2017. Following the Busang fiasco, more detailed guidelines were appended to the latest revision of the JORC Code released in September 1999 (JORC, 1999). Although the definitions and terminology essentially remained unchanged, the additional information in the guidelines has highlighted a number of issues for consideration by geologists undertaking computer-based resource estimations. The three main issues are:Data Integrity û details such as drilling and logging techniques, sampling procedures, assay tests, site visits, data recording and aggregation methods need to be considered. Geological Interpretation û is the Competent Person applying the appropriate software interpretation to the deposit in accordance with the regional setting. Are the correct computer-based tools being applied and are they producing the desired result (without compromise) to the satisfaction of the Competent Person? Modelling Technique û the importance of the relevant experience of the Competent Person not only in regard to the geology, but also with respect to the modelling algorithms and resource calculation methods of the computer software system involved. At the end of the day, it is essential that the Competent Person undertake a reality check on the resource estimation itself. They should also check that the borehole spacing is in accordance with the level of continuity for each critical parameter (such as structure, grade, impurities, etc) for which the resources are categorised.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, fatalities from road transport accidents represented an average of over 97 per cent of all transport related accidents between 1997 and 2002. With increasing traffic density, tunnels are becoming a more viable means of providing alternative travel routes to ease areas of congestion in the road transport network. However, unlike open road conditions, a fire incident in the confined space of a tunnel environment may impact upon many users that are remote from the incident location. In this context, designing for an appropriate level of safety in tunnels is therefore an important consideration for achieving consistency in the life safety measures for users of the road transport network. Unfortunately, like fire safety engineering design for buildings, there are presently no clear measures in the design processes to assess the adequacy of the design in terms of attaining the level of safety implicated in the design objectives. This is partly due to the indeterminate nature in which the design objective or the level of performance measure is stated û the intent of the objective is relatively clear but the measure of it is not. Another reason is the lack of a standardised procedure for determining the critical design variables affecting life safety. This is important to ascertain consistency in the use or adoption of the important parameters for design. This paper looks at the processes involved in the fire engineering design of road tunnels that are currently practised. A review of the design processes for fire safety in road tunnels is provided, which includes the range of fire scenarios in a tunnel environment, the traffic flow and composition, the relevant fire protection systems, the ventilation and smoke control system, the egress provisions and the benefits of incorporating fire brigade intervention. A simplified risk assessment approach is developed for a typical road tunnel to assess and evaluate the impact of a range of design parameters on life safety. Using a sensitivity technique, the important variables are then identified and means of reducing design variations associated with them are recommended. The technique may be further refined for use in the development of codes or guidelines in order to develop a suitable means of deriving more consistent design values, and hence achieve better consistency in the overall level of safety in the design.

New South Wales mining legislation reinforces a systematic approach to safety management. It is now a requirement of all mines in the coal, metalliferous and quarrying sectors in NSW to prepare a Mine Safety Management Plan. The paper briefly outlines work currently being undertaken by the Safety Operations Branch of the NSW Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). The DMR is working proactively with NSW mines in the preparation and implementation of effective Mine Safety Management Plans. There is a growing realisation that a systematic approach to safety management, underpinned by the process of hazard identification, has real potential to improve safety in the workplace. The paper briefly describes the framework used in a current æmines education programÆ and its æduty of careÆ foundation. Particular attention is paid to the role of mining operators in the implementation of Mine Safety Management Plans and their expected behaviour in demonstrating compliance. One challenge is convincing some mining operators that they must adopt new ways of working. Safety Operations officers are often reminded of the need to translate Mine Safety Management Plans into practical safety systems during audits and inspections of mines and through investigations into accidents and incidents.
