ABSTRACT- I Chemotrophic bacteria, capable of oxidising inorganic species such as Fe(II) and S(-]I) for their metabolic energy, have been known for many decades and interest in these bacterial species has increased since their ability oxidise auriferous arsenopyrite ores has been demonstrated. The rate at which bacterial cultures can oxidise a solid sulphide ore is of importance but a number of difficulties arise when attempting to evaluate this oxidative activity. The two major problems are counting the number of viable bacteria present in the reactor and identifying the types of bacteria that are active in both the solid and liquid phases. Enumerating the numbers of bacteria responsible for an observed change is necessary to compare the activity of different isolates. For selection and identification of bacteria during the development stages of a project, and for monitoring an operational process, the recognition of different species will be of importance. Methods for the taxonomic discrimination of bacterial species rely on observations, different culturing techniques, and the degree of DNA base homology between isolates. A method reported recently uses IR spectroscopy for comparisons between isolates. This spectroscopic method and its application is discussed.

The collapse of the I.T.C., the subsequent fall in the price of Tin, and the lifting of quotas saw the Renison concentrator resuming full seven- day operations at maximum capacity in 1985/86. Performance was sus- tained in terms of grade and recovery, and in some areas improved, over this period. A further challenge was declining head grades, and the need to treat higher proportions of less amenable ore types. The complexity of the flowsheet and the method of mining and ore handling predisposes the process to unstable operation, and solving this problem comprises a major component of the current development effort. The concentrator has an imbalance of capacity between processes, and excess in some areas is being adapted to enhance the capacity of others. Magnetic susceptibility of various minerals is being exploited to greater effect. Significant performance gains are achievable by improving exist- ing unit process efficiency, particularly in grinding, gravity processes and Cassiterite Flotation. This paper reviews the metallurgical developments, both recently implemented and planned for this year, which have contributed to main- taining Renison Limited in a competitive position in the post I.T.C. Tin industry.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited operates 33 draglines of varying sizes in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. The group's operations with draglines commenced in 1963 with the establishment of opencut operations at the then TPM Moura Mine and continued through expansion of that mine, the commissioning of the Utah Development Company Blackwater Mine in 1968, and the subsequent establishment of six (6) other large opencut mines, all in the general area over the next fourteen years. These operations generally commenced with boxcuts on the sub-crop at depths of 15 to 25 metres. Over the years, depths have increased so that average depths now are in the 45 to 50m range. It was soon realised that dragline operations would have to be supplemented with additional stripping equipment. In 1981, a symposium "45m and Beyond" was held in Rockhampton to assess the problems associated with such "deep" stripping. Subsequently, dragline operations have continued and although addi- tional stripping capacity has been added, in many instances, draglines have been used and are being used to dig depths greater than 45m, some- times as much as 65 to 70m.

Current models for the origin of banded iron-formation (BIF) derived in situ iron ore deposits assume that the typical chert and iron oxide banded BIF is the primary rock from which enriched iron ore deposits arise by the selective leaching of quartz and the residual accumulation of the iron oxides. Weathering extends to the base of all the hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province, which lie within the saprolitic weathering zone, as shown by the preservation of the primary textures, and are overlain by a hydrated goethite zone representing the solum. Since groundwater typically contains dissolved silica, derived from the hydrolysis of silicate minerals, greatly in excess of the saturation solubility of quartz, it is incapable of removing quartz from below the watertable, and quartz is preserved in all saprolites derived from quartz bearing rocks. Quartz may be dissolved in the solum due to the influx of meteoric water having little or no dissolved silica, but soil-forming processes that dissolve quartz likewise alter the oxides by hydration and transposition with consequent destruction of primary textures, and there is no suggestion of soil-forming processes having produced the deposits, which typically extend to considerable depths below the water-table. A characteristic feature of the typical hematite orebodies is the unaltered nature of the iron oxides in the ore compared to those in the adjacent cherty BIF. Although the solubility of ferric iron at >10 ppb is much less than quartz, any process capable of dissolving the huge volume of quartz must also affect the iron oxides, but evidence of this is completely lacking in most ore deposits. Hydrothermal alteration at Koolyanobbing in the Southern Cross Province affects both cherty BIF and ore, and clearly shows equal mobilisation and recrystallisation of hematite within quartz/hematite veins and in the surrounding cherty BIF, which shows no evidence for the selective leaching of quartz. Similarly, any metamorphic process capable of removing all quartz from BIF would leave characteristic evidence in the remaining oxides. However, a hydrothermal process may account for at least portions of certain ore deposits, in which the chert bands have been replaced by carbonates at comparatively low temperatures, to produce a quartz-free magnetite/ carbonate rock that is readily upgraded to high-grade ore by supergene dissolution of the carbonates. This process is interpreted to have formed high grade ore at Mt Gibson, Koolyanobbing æAÆ Deposit and Mt Tom Price North Deposit. In addition to carbonate replaced cherty BIF at Mt Gibson in the Murchison Province, there are extensive sequences of magnetite BIF without chert bands, and this chert-free facies of BIF is interpreted as the precursor to the majority of in situ hematite ore deposits, through oxidation and weathering of magnetite and iron silicate and carbonate minerals. The world-class martite/microplaty-hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province are a special case of BIF-derived iron ore deposits that were initiated during the Proterozoic era. Evidence from overlying Wyloo Group conglomeratic horizons containing clasts of Hamersley Group BIF indicates that microplaty-hematite formed within the clasts before deposition, and that Proterozoic subaerial oxidation and weathering of uplifted Hamersley Group formations produced the microplaty-hematite in both chert-free and cherty BIF.

The optimisation of capital in the total planning context has broadly two components: ò maximising the efficient utilisation of capital against competing capital demands; and ò maximising the efficiency with which the industry's capital requirements are sourced. This paper focuses on the latter of these two concepts, as I wish to highlight that within the coal industry the inefficient sourcing of capital has resulted in the inefficient utilisation of capital. In discussing the optimisation of capital within the coal industry I would like to outline three fundamental issues which currently impact the industry and its application of capital: Initially, from the perspective of an independent investor, the perceived risk associated with investing in a volatile industry cycle has not permitted appropriate funding structures to be created thus leading to an inefficient utilisation of capital. Secondly, investors seeking out a windfall gain have established a practice of trading in the assets rather than encouraging recapitalisation. And lastly the mismatch of supply and demand leading to the establishment of new projects which include a percentage of offshore investment has fostered an environment of lower returns and subsequently a dilution of capital.

The Karangahake epithermal Au-Ag mine consists of two main lodes, the Maria and the Welcome/Crown hosted in Miocene andesites. Mineralisation is strongly constrained to major structures and is genetically linked to dynamic tectonic processes. Two main periods of faulting are represented in the deposit: 1. NE striking right-lateral/normal oblique linked spatially and temporally with the mineralising system, and 2. ESE striking right-lateral/normal oblique post-mineral faulting that displaces the lodes. Paleostress analyses performed on a limited kinematic data set indicate NW-SE extension during the formation of the vein system. Veins and lodes strike NNNE and accordingly contain a strike-slip component. The kinematics of vein formation at Karangahake is broadly consistent with that of other deposits within a NNE-trending belt of deposits. Oblique shear on deflecting structures will create zones of compression and dilation. Dilatant zones created on steep structures create fluid pathways potentially focussing large volumes of fluid from deep parts of the system into dynamic structures.

DIVERSITY There are plenty of examples to show that diversity has been the fundamental downfall of many organisations, particularly when you consider the international position. What about core business, the return of companies to key competence directions and market focus. The stockmarket for instance defines groups and companies in key groups of core business. The expectation is that companies toe the line and do not diversify across their areas of defined expertise. In essence, the market has given notice that the requirements are to focus and stick to our core business. So what right does the conference have to suggest that diversity is the key to prosperity. Hasn't the organiser read the book, studied the history, listened to the market - obviously not. Have they got it wrong, My feeling and belief is no - the organisers have got it right. However, the matter is not as simple as first perceived. What is Diversity, or Diversification as I would prefer? Is it a product position? Is it a geographic position? Is it an expansion or change in services offered? Does a gold mining company diversify into copper or diamonds or aluminium or nickel? Does a gold miner in Australia diversify into China or Kazakhstan or West Africa? How do the two relate? They don't. A successful company will always possess a 'core competence' not so much a 'core business'. The best example of this is the service company extraordinaire - McDonalds. They don't sell hamburgers or french fries, they sell a service, a convenience, a lifestyle. The core business is hamburgers and if McDonalds were to diversify further into new styles of hamburgers, I suggest to you they would fail. But if McDonalds were to diversify into other products based on their 'core competence', provision of service, then I would suggest to you they would be very successful. There exist several legislative provisions in N.S.W. which work together to control surface subsidence due to extraction of coal by underground methods. The important ones are the Coal Mining Act, Coal Mines Regulation Act, Mine Subsidence Compensation Act and Dams Safety Act. In addition, there are guidelines laid down by the Chief Inspector of Coal Mines for mining under and in the vicinity of tidal waters and the ocean. There are also conditions of coal mining leases and conditions of approvals given to undertake various methods of mining which stipulate further controls. The legislative provisions and relative controls are designed to minimise surface damage, ensure safety , of major public utilities, control- surface land use and compensate damage caused by subsidence as a result of coal mining operations. They aim at balanced and responsible development of our valuable coal resources consistent with adequate safeguards to surface improvements and natural features. The paper discusses in detail these legislative provisions and the mechanics of their operation with a view to emphasising the fact that underground coal mining operations are undertaken responsibly and in a planned and rational manner for the overall benefit of the community. Further, the paper aims to demonstrate the need for legislative measures and conditioning of mining operations to keep abreast of developments in the knowledge and skills of mining and subsidence engineers and continuing improvements in mining technologies. Likewise there is a need on the part of engineers and those associated with introduction of new technologies to appreciate the requirements and existence of legislative and other measures having a direct or indirect association with surface subsidence as a result of coal mining operation.

Tailings storage facilities are geotechnically complicated structures that develop heterogeneous strength profiles and varied porewater conditions. The monitoring of porewater pressures is one of the only direct measurements that can be performed to monitor the performance of a facility throughout its life and is of particular importance in upstream facilities. Foundation underdrainage, continuous and staged tailings deposition, climate inputs (rain, snow, humidity, evaporation, etc), and stratified tailings permeabilities can complicate this critical measurement that introduces uncertainty to stability analyses. These difficult conditions manifest in vibrating wire piezometer measurements as very low or negative pressure readings, both of which are within the instrument’s range of accuracy. However, the data can be difficult to interpret, and a range of interpretations are adopted from optimistic low phreatic surfaces to conservative fully saturated tailings. Where tailings are potentially liquefiable, these very low readings introduce further uncertainty regarding the pore space saturation ratio and liquefaction potential above the estimated phreatic surface. This area of uncertainty is the vadose zone, and its affect on tailings behaviour is not well understood. The two facilities analysed in this paper are upstream, raised embankments with tailings classified as clayey, sandy silt that have been found to be potentially liquefiable. The vibrating wire piezometers (VWP) at both sites show very low or negative readings when they are initially installed near the surface and then go through cycles of re-saturation and de-saturation. Eventually the readings settle as the VWPs are buried deeper within the tailings. The instrumented sections within the tailings column do not show consistent readings that would be indicative of a hydrostatic phreatic surface at either site. Rather, they are highly variable and can be interpreted as either representing a high phreatic surface within the tailings or as a ‘perched’ phreatic zone within the tailings layers. How the VWP data is interpreted has a significant impact on how the facilities are raised and operated. The design outcome for Site 1, which adopts a lower phreatic surface, results in an embankment that meets factor of safety (FoS) requirements under residual strength conditions without any buttressing. Conversely, a conservative (high) phreatic surface has been adopted for Site 2 and has resulted in the facility requiring a significant buttress to meet FoS under residual strength conditions.

Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014. In the steelmaking process, mold fluxes are essential for ensuring thermal insulation, refining, and the efficiency of continuous casting. Real-time understanding of the in-service composition of slags and fluxes are crucial for optimising the steel production process and improving the quality of the final product. An in situ fibre-optic Raman probe that enables the study of the structure, composition, and viscosity of molten slags and fluxes at steelmaking temperatures has been developed and demonstrated both in the lab and in foundry scale experiments. The focus of this study is on the structural, compositional, and property analysis of molten fluxes in a laboratory setting, with the aim of applying this technology for in situ monitoring during industrial production. Raman spectra were successfully collected at various temperatures from 1000°C to 1400°C in real-time and analysed using a deconvolution algorithm to isolate and quantify peaks in the spectra associated with the specific structures of molecular components in molten and solidifying flux. The research successfully combines in situ Raman spectroscopy with high-temperature viscosity data, specifically targeting CaO-CaF-SiO2-Al2O3 based mould flux systems. Specified ratios of the deconvoluted Raman peaks, such as Al-O-Al/Si-O-Si ratio, shows good correlation with the flux chemistry, while the Q3/Q0 peak ratio shows good correlation with viscosity. A ruggedised Raman probe system was also developed and demonstrated in an 80 kg induction furnace. Ultimately, the goal of this work is to demonstrate in situ slag and mould flux analysis in industrial processes, such as in the continuous caster or electric arc furnace (EAF).

During its 28-year life the MHD ISP smelter has gone through two phases, each of about a dozen years. The first phase was a learning one; in the second phase the lessons were applied and throughput and production rose strongly. Early experience revealed the robustness and the flexibility of the Imperial Smelting Process. The experience was demonstrated by strong increases in the throughput of mixed lead-zinc concentrates and of secondary (oxide) zinc materials. Purchased material quantities rose from 175 000 tonnes/year to 200 000. The required capacity increase of the IS furnace to smelt the higher throughput was achieved by relatively minor modifications; for instance a change to the internal furnace profile gained an extra two square metres in cross sectional area. The furnace hearth area has remained practically unchanged over its entire history. The paper concludes that there is still more potential to be drawn from the process and MHD intends to sustain raw material input at a new level of 240 000 tonnes/year. However, this rate will have to be achieved under the imposition of more stringent environmental and product quality standards than ever before.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

Achieving relinquishment of mining sites is becoming increasingly difficult, with a study by Byrne (2013) estimating that out of a set of 73 mining and metals sites around the world, less than ten per cent had achieved relinquishment over the last 50 years. The median forecast duration of time allocated for water management in the closure plans studied was approximately ten years, while the reality at the actual sites was a median duration of 22 years to date and growing.One of many challenges in mine closure planning is managing geomorphic stability of stream diversions. The challenge is to be able to demonstrate to regulators and the community that a proposed rehabilitation solution will be stable over the long term.During the mining operations, local watercourses and surface drainage can be diverted and managed using engineered channels and drainage structures. However, during the post-operations stage, the engineered channel and drainage may require modification to a more natural condition that will facilitate long-term environmental sustainability. Achieving geomorphic stability of a diverted watercourse is difficult, with the majority of stream diversions in Australia failing to meet expected design performance (White et al, 2013). Geomorphic stability is a complex process that is controlled by a combination of factors, including hydraulic flow conditions, geotechnical conditions and vegetation.This paper proposes that a fully dynamic and deterministic geomorphological model can be used to supplement the traditional empirical approaches to assess long-term geomorphic stability. The paper provides an overview of the geomorphological models and how they have been applied in engineering studies for forecasting future evolution of stream systems. Increasing the strength of backfill has been the subject of much research. In the former Soviet Union most methods concentrated on the fill mixture including chemical additives, binder re-grinding, water electromagnetic activation and the use of vibration and turbulent activation. For the most part, this research has been confined to the laboratory where the results were not representative of field conditions. These methods also were directed at increasing the mass strength and were not specifically aimed at strengthening the fill where it may subsequently be exposed for instance on the side or underneath as it required for underhand cut and fill methods of mining. In the Republic of Armenia, a method of fill strengthening known as electro-activation has been adopted. The deposit it an epithermal gold deposit which to-date has been mined using underhand cut and fill with timber support. The backfill comprises cement and pumice placed in 2.5 m lifts. Central to the method of electro-activation is the placement of the electrodes in the stope in which the polarity and the electrical potential are changing during filling. The process promotes the binding of the fill layers, the bond to the side walls and to the adjacent fill. There is a significant increase in the compressive and tensile strength. The process has been used with beneficial effects on reinforced concrete and could be used in any mine utilising hardening fills.

Due to the low concentration of gold, ore sorting for gold has always required measuring indirect properties, such as density or colour, to allow separation on a rock by rock basis. This only works on an ad hoc, by deposit basis and is likely to be least reliable where it is most required in low grade ores. One candidate technique, Gamma Activation Analysis (GAA) has been demonstrated to directly measure gold extremely accurately in powder samples of around 500gm and is used in the Chrysos PhotonAssay assay system. This method uses a linear accelerator (linac) to generate the X-ray radiation that activates the ore at low levels to emit a characteristic gold gamma ray that is then measured by a radiation detector. CSIRO is adapting this measurement technique to application on a belt at up to 800tph to measure pods of ore. The principal differences between measuring samples and an on-line measurement of pods are the requirement to measure coarse ore (<50mm), to measure a larger volume of ore as uniformly as possible, and to have an open-ended geometry with adequate shielding of the linac radiation source. These issues have all been addressed with measurements of coarse ore reported down to around 1ppm in sub-optimal test conditions. They have been demonstrated for <75mm particles with detectors capable of measuring a large volume geometry continuously. These are projected to allow measurements down to 0.3ppm in more optimum conditions for a 10 second measurement time period where the U/Th content of the ore is less than ~10ppm. Extensive Monte Carlo modelling has demonstrated that adequate shielding can be provided in relatively simple geometries with only 1 right angle transfer in the material handling. Steady progress is being made to reach the technical position required to trial an ore sorting system.

The use of geophysics in mineral exploration in Australia, and overseas, has increased dramatically over this century. This paper shows that using simple equipment with clever interpretation that the foundations of modem geophysics were laid, using all the same principles. The plethora and diversity of mineral exploration geophysical techniques does not allow a full description of their evolution to be given in such a paper. To convey this evolution, however, the progress of two different geophysical methods, magnetics - a potential field (passive) method, and electromagnetics - an electrical (active) method, are described. Examples of magnetic survey data from the 1920s and more recent vehicle home and airborne surveys are given to show the increase in data quality through technological improvement. A set of four airborne electromagnetic data sets spanning three decades is used to indicate the improvement in electromagnetic techniques. It is argued, that considerable progress is still required in the electromagnetic field to increase its interpretability.

By the year 2000, China was the sixth largest gold producer in the world, with about one-quarter of total production being derived from refractory or semi-refractory deposits. Although bacterial oxidation plants had been previously tried in China using local technology, these plants had not been commercially successful. The Laizhou Gold Enterprise (Tarzan BioGold Co Ltd) located in Shandong Province, undertook to modernise their gold processing facility in 2000 with the introduction of Bacterial Oxidation (BACOX) Technology. In 1997 BacTech Australia and Mintek of South Africa had formed a technology partnership, combining forces in the provision of bioleach technology. Under a cooperation agreement, BacTech/Mintek were chosen as the preferred technology providers for this first application of commercially proven bacterial oxidation technology within China. The paper describes the successful operation of this plant over the last three years. The events of project implementation are described, from the metallurgical testing of concentrate; through to the commissioning at the design throughput of 100 tonnes per day resulting in 80 000 ounces (2.5 tonnes) per year of refined gold. Process aspects of the operation encountered over the last three years are discussed which illustrate the robustness of the operation. The success of the bioleach facility has led to an advancement of plans to double plant capacity and some of the innovations, which may be employed in this expansion phase, are discussed.

Creative mine-designs are constantly being applied in the deep platinum mining industry in South Africa. Recently, this has resulted in deep hot mine-designs including room and pillar, bord and pillar or stall and pillar layouts and the use of in-stope trackless mechanisation. In these mines, the ventilation systems use refrigerated air and high fan pressures and as a result ventilation leakage can have a huge impact. Leakage is a serious impediment to cost-effective operation and potential leakage in future projects is a major factor in judging project viability. This paper describes certain mine layouts and quantifies the extent of the leakage. Based on typical field data, a range of seals from ævery poorÆ to ævery goodÆ was defined and used to estimate overall leakage. Within these mine networks the ventilation pressure, temperature and density all vary significantly and with the multiplicity of leakage paths it was necessary to make use of the VUMA-network simulation package. For the examples examined, the leakage was found to be up to 85 per cent for æpoorÆ category seals and up to 50 per cent for ægoodÆ category seals. The total air flow (and refrigeration) requirements grow exponentially with strike distance due to the compounding effects of higher pressure and more leakage paths. It is shown that beyond certain depths and strike distances the leakage will become so great that it will be impossible to operate cost-effectively û even with ægoodÆ seals. Indeed, in these examples the projects were not considered viable in their original format because of the high ventilation-cooling costs and the mine-designs were modified to include footwall drive systems û the cost of which was justified by the reduced strategic risk to operating ineffectiveness due to leakage.
