Hydraulic Monitor mining at Solid EnergyÆs Spring Creek Mine has proven to be a safe and effective method of extracting steeply dipping thick seams at production capabilities approaching one million tonnes per annum.   This paper traces the development of Hydraulic Monitor mining from its initial introduction into old workings at Strongman Mine, its refinement at Strongman 2 in shallow, thick and steep workings, through to its introduction into the deep, very thick seams at Spring Creek Mine. This last step of the progression came with all the added complications that come with depth, particularly flammable gas.   This paper will describe the various changes in mining conditions that dictated the performance of the monitor, how the mine layouts were changed to adapt, and the various operational systems that were put in place, to allow a safe and productive operation.

The major strata control considerations which affect the optimisation of roadway driveage in highly stressed strata is the performance of reinforcement placed and the extent of stress induced rock deformation. High development rates and opening stability requires efficient rock reinforcement and stress relief strategies which maximise the integrity of the rock about roadways created. Current studies demonstrate the capability to reduce lateral stress distributions across panels and research is aimed toward a higher capacity bolting system. It is the intention to provide industry with more efficient reinforcement and stress control alternatives which will allow high production development equipment to operate without the restriction of delays caused by poor ground Conditions.

Builders have been very familiar with iron since ancient times, but because of its weathering characteristics it was relegated to use as a fastening material in unexposed places and bronze became the popular metal for exposed applications. It is of interest that iron nails buried deeply about A.D. 87 at a Roman fortress and carefully covered with clean beaten earth under conditions practically excluding oxygen were found to be almost unrusted 1870 years later. (1) Today, weathering steels, which contain less than 2% of alloying additions, can be used in exposed situations without protection and without experiencing continuous wastage. As we all know the steady access of atmospheric oxygen to the surface of plain steel causes continuous corrosion. Weathering steels, on the other hand, due to their alloying additions develop their own impervious surface layer which limits the access of atmospheric oxygen and effectively limits corrosion. Table 1 shows the chemical composition of a plain carbon steel and a typical weathering steel. Fig. 1 shows what we refer to as direct corrosion - time curves in which corrosion loss is plotted against time of exposure in an strial environment. The weathering steel has a high rate initially which then decreases steadily for about three years, as the stable rust film builds up. This is followed by a practically linear relation where the very low corrosion rate, according to one school (2), is due to a blocking of the rust pores by insoluble complex salts formed from interaction of the oxidation products of the separate alloying elements. The start of the linear region represents a total corrosion loss of only about 2 thousandths of an inch.

Robe River Iron Associates (RRIA or Robe) is widely regarded as the worldÆs most cost-effective, consistent and reliable supplier of iron ore. It has been in operation since 1972 and globally is the fourth largest seaborne trader in iron ore exporting 25.5 million tonnes of -9.5 mm sinter fines and 4.5 million tonnes of pisolite lump (-31.5 +6.3 mm) during 1999. Robe is a joint venture that controls major iron ore resources in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. ItÆs participants are North Limited with an interest of 53 per cent (65 per cent including minority interests) and Japanese companies Mitsui (33 per cent), Nippon Steel Australia (10.5 per cent) and Sumitomo Metal Australia (3.5 per cent). Robe River Mining Co Pty Ltd manages the project which is a subsidiary of North Limited and Mitsui.

In response to these challenges, the Professional Mine Water Action Plan (PMAP) introduces a revolutionary approach that combines cutting-edge AI technology and environmentally friendly reagents for in situ neutralisation of acidic wastewater. PMAP leverages magnesium-based slowrelease reagents and AI-driven intelligent dispensing systems to optimise treatment processes within the tailing pond itself. The unmanned smart dispensing vessel (USDV) conducts bathymetry to gather data on water quality and hydrography, allowing the system to determine the appropriate reagent quantity and injection strategy. This approach transforms the tailing pond into virtual reaction columns, enabling individual and simultaneous water treatment while optimising efficiency. Lafayette Mining Limited, a listed Australian company, is developing a polymetallic Project on the island of Rapu Rapu, located to the east of southern Luzon in the Philippines. The Rapu Rapu Project is based on the Ungay deposit, which has proven and probable reserves of 6.0 million tonnes of 2.5 g/t Au, 28 g/t Ag, 1.2 per cent Cu and 2.1 per cent Zn. The Project will produce copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide flotation plant as well as dore from a CIL gold plant. Average annual metal production over the projected six-year mine life is 9800 tonnes of copper, 14 000 tonnes of zinc, 50 000 ounces of gold and 590 000 ounces of silver. Despite a rich mineral endowment and long mining history, there have not been any significant new mine developments in the Philippines since the early-1990s. The investment climate has been affected by legal challenges to the 1995 mining code, civil unrest in parts of the country, the impeachment of the previous President and community concerns about the industryÆs environmental performance. As a consequence, the Rapu Rapu Project is viewed as a test case û within both the country and the international mining industry û on whether minerals investment in the Philippines is an acceptable business proposition from a risk perspective. Lafayette has faced formidable challenges in managing the development risks of the Project. The major risk areas of the Project for which the company developed strategies include: regulatory, environmental and approvals issues, technical evaluation, project development, social and community issues, land acquisition, and financial and marketing issues. This paper describes the risk management strategies successfully pursued by the company, and which have the Project on track to commence construction in 2003. Dealing with each of the areas in turn, Lafayette sought to develop strategies which either effectively neutralised, minimised or otherwise addressed the key risks most likely to be experienced.

The production of approximately 550 000 tonnes of æwhiteÆ or chrysotile asbestos fibre between 1972 and 1983 at the Woodsreef Mine in New South Wales left behind 24 million tonnes of tailings and 75 million tonnes of waste rock and overburden. The Woodsreef Magnesium Project is designed to extract the 23 per cent magnesium content of the tailings to produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys, the latter with aluminium from the New South Wales smelters. Further value will be added to the tailings waste with the downstream production of magnesium alloy sheets and cast products for the transportation, electronics and other consumer goods industries. The mine opened in 1918 and closed in 1983 becoming derelict. There has been minimal expenditure on rehabilitation compared with that recommended in reports commissioned by the New South Wales Government. The tailings dump has been designated æasbestos wasteÆ by the EPA and will be eliminated through the magnesium refinery process of the Project with the dissolution of the remaining chrysotile fibres. The benign waste from the refinery process will consist principally of silica with some iron. Significant energy savings are expected from innovative new processing technology, in the alloy formation and in the application of the light weight, cast and sheet metal products, particularly in the transportation industries. Globally, there are very large resources of similar tailings with hundreds of years of useful productive lives that could be converted into the metal of the 21st Century, magnesium, and its alloys, to assist pollution and greenhouse gas reduction from transportation industries. No new mining and minimal feedstock preparation is required. Unlike potential producers using carbonate rocks such as magnesite and dolomite that have to be mined, the asbestos tailings composed principally of non-fibrous serpentinite do not contain any carbon dioxide.

The Perth Mint receives gold and silver from various sources for evaluation and refining. The metals are received in many forms and vary widely in assay. Refining is carried out using the Miller Process and the and the resulting market quality bullion is sold in a range of weights and alloys to suit the international bullion market and public demand. INTRODUCTION The Perth Mint was established in the late nineties as a branch of the Royal Mint, London, to refine the gold from the newly established gold- fields in Western Australia. The branch was opened for business in June, 1899. After refining, the bulk of the gold was used in the manufacture of sovereigns and half-sovereigns. Nowadays, although most of the gold received comes from the W.A. goldfields, some gold is deposited by producers in other states and in Papua-New Guinea, as well as scrap and trade wastes from manufacturing jewellers and old jewellery from the general public. Silver is deposited in the form of old silverware, recoveries from-photographic processes etc. Gold or silver may be lodged at the Mint in person, through a bank or other agency or by registered post. Telegraphic advice is usually given when gold is sent by the latter, so that insurance may be effected.

The failure of roof of thin bedrock working face under loose aquifer in a coalmine can lead to water-sand inrush disaster. Based on the accident of water-sand inrush in 30108 working face of a mine in Shaanxi province, China, the mechanism of water-sand inrush is theoretically analysed. The process and critical conditions of water-sand inrush in working face are reproduced by numerical simulation where the bedrock thickness is 20 m, the clay layer thickness is 40 m and the mining height is 6.5 m. The study found that under the condition of thin bedrock and thick clay layer, the characteristics of the clay layer have a significant inhibitory effect on the development of the fractured zone, and the development of the water-conducting fractured zone is incomplete and insufficient. However, in the process of continuous mining of multiple adjacent working faces, the strength of the clay is gradually reduced by the influence of mining and the erosion of water, and the height of the fractured zone is gradually increased. In the subsequent mining process of the working face, the roof is more likely to be cut-off and lead to water-sand inrush. From the initial failure of the clay to the final crack directly through the surface, the shear strength of the clay is reduced by about 52 per cent. Further simulation found that in addition to the characteristics of the clay layer itself, the main factors affecting the water-sand inrush in the working face caused by overburden failure also include the difference in bedrock thickness and strength, and the difference in coal seam mining height. With the increase of bedrock thickness, the development height of the fractured zone increases gradually with increases of bedrock thickness when the cutting failure of overburden rock no longer occurs. With the increase of mining height, the height of water flowing fractured zone also increases, but the cracking ratio gradually decreases. Therefore, it’s of great practical significance to systematically study the mechanism and critical conditions of water and sand inrush in mines and the main influencing factors for preventing similar accidents in mines with similar conditions.

North Flinders Mines Limited (N.F.M.) is an Australian-owned mineral exploration and mining company based in South Australia. In the 1970's it researched the prospectiveness of the Tanami (central western region of the N.T.) for the identification of possible economic gold deposits. Having outlined the potential for such a deposit at The Granites (550 km. N.W. of Alice Springs), it marked out and in 1975 applied for the grant of eleven gold mining leases (G.M.L.'s) under the provisions of the then Mining Ordinance. This application was deferred by the Commonwealth Government during the time of the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission (Woodward), subsequent enactment of legislation and land claims. In 1980, the Walpiri and Kartangarurra-Kurintji land claim encompassing the G.M.L.'s, became Aboriginal land. It therefore became necessary for N.F.M. to negotiate a mining agreement with the Central Land Council (C.L.C.) represent- ing the Traditional Owners, before the G.M.L.'s could be granted. In August 1983, the C.L.C. and N.F.M. concluded an agreement to enable the grant of mining interests necessary for the devel- opment of The Granites Gold Project. The fine grained complex orebody at Elura contains galena, silver and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite; sulphides account for about 90% of the orebody. A differential flotation circuit is operated to con- centrate lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The metallurgical performance to date indicates the need for improvement. The lead section has been sampled in detail to comprehensively assess its overall performance and to define problems associated with lead and silver flotation. The substantial amount of pyrite in the feed dominated the perfor- mance of each stage of the separation. It was responsible for extensive dilution of all concentrates and, as a consequence, for very large circulating loads. The rougher concentrate contained 68% pyrite some of which was rejected through the three stages of cleaning to 39% in the final concen- trate. However, this was still sufficient to hold the assay of this product below 45% Pb. Size by size behaviour shows that flotation rates of the valuable minerals, as characterised by their rate coefficients, were low through- out the circuit. There was a significant deterioration in these rates between rougher and cleaner I stages which resulted in large circulating loads between these stages. There was practically no recovery of coarse valu- able minerals to the final concentrate. The dilution of the final concen- trate by non-sulphide gangue was not a major problem. If the recovery of the galena and silver in the +38¦m size range could be raised to that of the - 381Lm size range, galena recovery would rise from 78% to 86% and silver recovery would improve from 46% to 59%. The Pb grade of the final concentrate would remain the same.

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. The current talk of risk management as a separate discipline and management function is like earlier imposition of Quality Control (QC) as an overlay on shoddy production management. Risk management is vital, but is integral in the way we marshal our staff, make decisions, then monitor and review and make crucial secondary decisions. New leaders must not assume that hiring experts ensures good decisions. It is only the essential step one. The worst company I worked for had more expertise than the best. The difference was in culture and decision-making processes. Failed feasibility studies, persistent technical factions in a company that cancel each other, heaps of expert consultant reports piled up like a dump of bricks, even great but half-managers in large and small companies cancelling expertise at their disposal, are the worst manifestations. Just daily foul-ups are common even amongst smart people. We miners have made a great industry but are content to drift far below excellence, even where that word is bandied around. All the management literature and management courses will not right the situation û we have been sending budding managers to this good stuff for two generations and the effects are worthwhile but marginal. A few key ideals, ideas and slogans are not the way. These make inspiring books that work about as long as the Christmas spirit does in the real world. What we need is a coachesÆ manual and a standard of the essential package of culture and work processes that make excellence possible and show how to maintain it long term. It has not been written until now because most managers want to remain dilettante amateur managers without the discipline that creates excellence. First, believe excellence is possible and worth any effort; then commit to it.

Consulting Engineers have been used in the mining and metallurgical industries for many years. The traditional role of the consultant overseas has been one of assisting with conceptual design right through to con- struction and commissioning as well as on occasion acting solely in specialist fields. This role developed because mining companies wished to concentrate on building up the permanent organisation they require to operate their mines and treatment plants without the traumas of increasing staff for the design and construction period and reducing it on completion. In Australia where there have been few individual minerals projects of magnitude (until recently) companies have looked after their own detailed engineering and construct- ion management employing consultants mainly in specialised fields.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. Process mineralogy is an inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and mineral processing. As a predicting and trouble-shooting tool, process mineralogy helps address all mineralogical issues and problems related to mineral processing. It provides useful information on process design and optimisation, flow sheet development and cost reduction. As more and more complex and refractory ores are being discovered and processed, it is believed that process mineralogy will gain more attention and play a more important role in process design and optimisation. This paper will first discuss the scope of process mineralogy and mineralogical factors that may affect mineral processing of various ores, and then focuses on the application of process mineralogy in process design and optimisation through case studies.

Suppression of the explosion of the world population and the surprising increase of waste and emissions are major targets confronting mankind in this century. Recycling and waste minimisation are key words for sustainable development in a highly industrial society. The argument is really whether or not recycling done well is the solution to the environment problem for the following generation. If energy is not necessary in the recycling, all materials have to be recycled. The greatest interest among the environmental issues is the regulation of CO2 gas emission. It must be recognised that it is not possible to completely renew expended energy. Some of the recycling systems currently used are thought to increase the load on the environment rather than to be beneficial. Although metal industries have consumed tremendous amount of energy and discharged a large quantity of CO2 and solid waste, the metals have supported a high quality of life. The metal production industries such as the iron and steel industry and the non-ferrous metals industry can work well recycling of not only metals but also other materials without consuming more energy. Waste plastics, for example, are use as a reductant in a blast furnace. The role of metallurgical industry in the recycling-based society is introduced in the present paper to recognise how the metal industries can contribute recycling and waste minimisation.

The paper explores the sustainability of the Australian mining industry, and the potential for application of a substitute fuel into existing mining operations. This alternative fuel biodiesel is produced from biological oils and not from refined hydrocarbons like the transport fuel diesel (petrodiesel). The fuel is compatible with all current diesel equipment with little to no modification and has many superior properties. As biodiesel is derived from biological sources it is æcarbon neutralÆ meaning there is no net carbon addition to the atmosphere when the fuel is burned. The current fuel, petrodiesel releases long stored carbon dioxide (CO2) and is of concern to Australian government targets which seek to reduce these emissions. The mining industryÆs unique reliance on petrodiesel is of particular interest when assessing the substitution of biodiesel into underground and open cut operations. The underground benefits of biodiesel see a reduction in the noxious emissions of carbon monoxide and diesel particulate matter, both contaminants which require extensive diluting ventilation to ensure safe levels. As biodiesel is both safer to store due to its higher flash point and produces less exhaust emissions, its occupational health and safety benefits in underground mines is clear. The use of biodiesel in open cut mines benefits the environmental sustainability aspects of the project. The formulation of national targets relating to carbon dioxide emission reductions promotes any measure to reduce CO2 within the mining environment. As the diesel engine is one of the least emission efficient (kWh/tonne CO2) energy sources on-site, its potential for reduction in CO2 at minimal cost is the greatest. By substituting the fuel, significant quantities of site emissions are reduced, thereby achieving the goals of improved site sustainability and the governmentÆs targets to reduce emissions. This aspect of gauging mutually beneficial relationship regarding government interests and mining industry profitability is the underlying outcome for this paper.

You wouldnÆt start excavating before testing core samples, so why would you approve a project plan before all factors have been identified, reviewed and addressed? Even a champion sports team made up of the best players canÆt produce optimal results without a well understood and agreed game plan. Could an F1 racing team produce their outstanding performance without rigorous evaluation and testing of the factors for successful performance? Why would we expect a capital works project team to be able to get it right without an understanding and an involvement in setting and implementing the overall game plan and without an understanding of all stakeholder requirements? For International PowerÆs Hazelwood (IPRH) mine in Victoria, the challenge was development and delivery of a 40 year mine plan, ultimately involving relocation of existing mine operations into an adjacent new coal field, land acquisitions and major environmental and other approvals to allow diversion of three streams, a highway, an Over Dimension route and other infrastructure in a political and environmentally sensitive atmosphere. The lessons from International Power HazelwoodÆs (IPRH) experience are: that the clear set of project principles and guiding values ensured delivery of a robust plan; a robust plan can withstand significant change; and value management (VM) played an important role in providing assurance, to all, that the plan was sound at both the strategic and micro levels. This Hazelwood mine project included five major VM workshops. The first was a critical review process in addition to design and cost reviews. This VM workshop was used to analyse, at a high level, the preferred coal mining sequence and design concepts, together with the interaction between design elements, risks and costs. In addition to this, the workshop provided an agreed common pathway for all downstream decisions. A second VM study was conducted to ensure that the proposed plan and design for relocation of the conveying systems from the existing mine into the new field were planned for optimum achievement from a whole of life cost, time, operational and maintenance perspective, plus the logistics of continuing operations while relocating assets. A third study followed to review the Conveyor Transfer Alliance and review functional design. A fourth VM study workshop was formed at the start of Phase 2 Alliance to ensure that the best value for money was being achieved through the current design, schedule and project arrangements and that all interfaces between parties had been reviewed and responsibilities were clear and understood. Other studies are outlined later in this paper. This paper details the evaluation criteria and processes used in the project evaluation that led to the WestField Mine Development.
