The price of crude oil in Kentucky did not change very much during 1935 until the latter part of the year, but more stabilized conditions and an increase in consumption of natural gas made the year a more profitable one than the year 1934. The production of crude oil in 1935 amounted to 5,175,054 bbl. as compared to 4,814,904 bbl. in 1934. This increase was due to two developments: (1) the application of new recovery methods to old fields, which, although in operation in the state for several years, had never before reached a point where the production obtained, while highly satisfactory where applied, was sufficient to influence the totals in the production figures; (2) the development of the Fordsville area in Ohio County, where shallow depths enabled the operators to complete the development of a large number of wells with a good flush production probably accounted for most of the increase. A map showing the location of oil and gas pools in Kentucky was published last year.' The fields of eastern Kentucky, producing from the Weir sand of the Waverly group of the Lower Mississippian series, in Johnson, Magoffin, Lawrence and Elliott counties, produced 826,001 bbl. of oil in 1935 as compared with 902,247 bbl. in the previous year. No new wells were drilled in this area during the year, except those for use as intake wells in repressuring. What has been done in the few small areas within these fields in the way of repressuring has produced results sufficient to a great extent to offset the natural decline of all the field. It is probable the drilling of new wells and construction of new plants will be such as to cause these fields to produce more in 1936 than was produced in the past year. This is based on the fact that the sand is highly favorable for repressuring and the results obtained show from 300 to 500 per cent increase in production. Although many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other intercsted parties to give out their "inside information " Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County, at this time. Locality and Description The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. LouisSan Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 21/2 hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75' west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south 45" east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parall el syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin south of the Cement anticfine. The positjon of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of-Cement, has not been discovered. TOPOGKAFHY In the southwest part of the state, nearly all maps of Oklahoma show two mountain areas—Arbuckle and Wichita—which are conspicuous geological and topographic landmarks. In addition, some maps show a third, and smaller, range, named the Keechi Hills, in the vicinity of Cement. These hills also form a conspicuous feature in the landscape; but for some reason they have been neglected by geologists, and the

INTRODUCTION The Optimum Production Rate (OPR) is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of a mineral deposit. The OPR can also be expressed as the Optimum Mine Life (OML) in years since the expected mine life is determined by dividing the OPR per year into the estimated ore reserves. Unfortunately, very little time and effort has been directed towards the determination of the OPR. Instead, "rules of thumb" are often applied to select a mine life without due consideration of the economic implications of such a selection. A "justification" for a particular production rate is often based on a pre-conceived arbitrary requirement for a mine life of 5, 10, or 15 years, for example. In this paper it is demonstrated that such arbitrary selections for high-grade/low-tonnage mines (such as many underground gold/silver deposits) often lead to sub-optimal results. In fact, an apparently uneconomic deposit at an arbitrary production rate may be economic at the OPR. Consequently, investment opportunities may be overlooked if one analyzes mine properties based on arbitrary production rates. This paper analyzes the interrelationships of variables such as production rates, capital and operating costs, cut-off grades, discount rates, metal prices, etc. The analysis shows that the OML for high-grade/low-tonnage deposits is often in the range of two to four years. Although such mine lives intuitively appear too short to many individuals, it should be noted that, in the past, much of the mining industry became familiar with the economics of large scale mining operations. The rules of thumb developed for such large scale operations should not be applied to high-grade/low-tonnage mines such as many of the underground gold deposits. DEFINITION OF OPTIMUM PRODUCTION RATE The OPR is selected on the basis of maximizing the net present value of the after-tax cash flows. However, as discussed later in this paper, the production rate selected for a particular mine may be somewhat higher or lower than the theoretical OPR as a result of other variables such as: 1) the probability or expectation of additional reserves being discovered 2) the likelihood of being able to custom mill nearby deposits owned by others 3) the configuration or attitude of the orebody, which may place upper limits on the production rate 4) the residual, or salvage values, of the mine/mill facilities COMPARISON BETWEEN DIFFERENT PRODUCTION RATES For an orebody with definite physical cutoffs*, or boundaries (such as faults or unconformities), the total ore reserves at different production rates may be identical. Consequently, for such an orebody, varying production rates result in differing mine lives. Although the metallurgical recoveries, the mine dilution, and other similar physical parameters may vary slightly at different production rates, the major differences are the capital costs and operating costs per ton. The ramifications of these differences are especially important at low production rates (up to approximately 1000 tons per day), but can also be significant at higher production rates.

Manganese and silica in nonmagnetic tailings from the direct reduction-magnetic separation step were so closely associated that no physical concentration methods were effective. Dilute sulfuric acid dissolved manganese and iron rapidly; manganese in the form of silicates was virtually insoluble in sulfuric acid solutions, thereby governing the maximum extraction attained by leaching. Autoclave leaching at elevated temperatures and at high oxygen pressures reduced the iron extraction to less than one tenth without affecting the manganese extraction. There was an indication that autoclaving solubilized the manganese silicates appreciably. Elimination of iron from leach solutions was carried out by aerating the solution in the pH range of 6.5-7; a platinum-calomel electrode pair provided a reliable indicator for the end point of iron removal. The purified leach solutions were free of interfering impurities for the recovery of manganese as metal, dioxide, or carbonate. Manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range, Minn., are too low in iron content to be directly useful as iron ores, and too low in manganese content to be termed manganese ores. Common methods of physical beneficiation such as gravity concentration and flotation have not been successful in upgrading this material. The R-N process, when applied to manganiferous iron ores,1'2 produces sponge iron by direct reduction of iron oxides, while leaving manganese as manganous oxide. From fine grinding and magnetic separation of the reduced ore, a tailing is produced which is relatively rich in manganese and low in iron content. The nonmagnetic tailing can readily be leached with acids and then further processed to recover manganese in various forms. In this way, two processes, neither of which would be an economic solution to the Cuyuna ore problem by itself, may be combined to produce two marketable products, thereby rendering the over-all process economically more attractive. This article reports on the results of a leaching study on the nonmagnetic tailings, both in a batch agitation vessel and in an autoclave; on the problems involved in the purification of leach liquors by aeration; and on the recovery techniques used to produce manganese metal by electrolysis, manganese dioxide either by electrolysis or by autoclaving, and

(communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Blake's recent paper upon this topic undoubtedly partly explains the rationale of a part of the known facts bearing upon discolorat'ion and encrustation of rocks. His quotation from Humboldt, with reference to certain South American examples, may be questioned in the light of further facts, which do not appear to bear out the great traveler's theory of causation. There is no available evidence that the waters of the tropical rivers referred to by Professor Blake contain dissolved organic matter in the varying proportions required to demonstrate Humboldt's guess, nor do the concomitant facts in any manner bear out the hypothesis that the blackening in one case and its absence in the other may, perhaps, be traced to differences in the chemical reactions of the respective waters. Careful consideration of Professor Blake's illustrations, in connection with numerous personal observations extending over widely-scattered areas, convinces me that elements of

The most important factors that should be given consideration in the valuation of oil lands are: (1) the amount of oil the property will produce; (2) the amount of money this oil will bring (based upon the future prices of oil); (3) development and production costs; (4) the rate of interest on the investment; (5) the retirement or amortization of invested capital; and (6) the salvage or "scrap" value of the equipment when the property is exhausted. These factors are of varying importance and some of them may not enter all valuation problems, but most of them should be given consideration in any valuation even though only a rough estimate of the value of the property is desired. The value of a property may be changed over night by the completion of important test wells, by the sudden water flooding, or by a change in the price of oil. The best a petroleum engineer can give is the value of the property under the conditions existing at the time the appraisal is made with a fair forecast of future action of the wells and of the price of oil. Our experience in the scientific valuation of oil lands is not broad and there is very little published information on the subject; it, therefore, becomes necessary in studying such problems to form comparisons with the factors involved in the valuation of mines—the closest parallel. One of the reasons for the lack of substantial progress in oil-land valuation methods has been the necessity of making an estimate of the future production of the oil property to be valued. Oil men and accountants have not generally conceded that such estimates could be made with any degree of accuracy. It has been shown, however, in several recent publications that with certain data available reasonably close estimates can be made. The accuracy of an appraisal depends chiefly on the accuracy of the estimates of future production and of the future price of oil. The accuracy of the former is sometimes necessarily based on geological inferences. Geology is not an exact science and geological data in connection with oil production cannot always be mathematically evaluated.

During 1937 the Russian oil industry made very satisfactory progress in its exploration branch and added considerably to its proven reserves in the older producing districts, while several entirely new potential areas were opened for development by discovery wildcats. The exploitation of known fields, however, suffered greatly from internal political difficulties, referred to as "sabotage," and was also seriously handicapped by the requirements for national defense under the duress of a grave international situation. More particularly, the necessity for preparing for a major war resulted during 1937 in short-rationing of the oil industry in its iron, steel and rubber requirements, affecting quantitatively drill pipe, casing, tubing and the rubber equipment of automobiles, and qualitatively much of the oil-field machinery for which it was either impossible or difficult to obtain iron or steel of required specifications, which necessitated manufacture of heavier and unwieldy equipment and caused directly and indirectly an unavoidable major curtailment of drilling operations below the planned footage. War-preparation measures during 1937 also required accumulation of a large gasoline reserve in the Vladivostok area and inasmuch as shipments from California can be made much more cheaply than from Caucasian refineries, either by tank cars across Siberia or by tankers via Suez Canal and Indian Ocean, some 2,000,000 bbl. of gasoline was imported from the United States in the past year, resulting in a decline of 46.98 per cent in net exports of all petroleum products from Russia below the 1936 net export volume, which is the lowest level since 1925. Production of crude oil during 1937 is estimated at 212,742,000 bbl. as compared with 202,543,700 bbl. produced in 1936, an increase of 5.04 per cent, but 11 per cent below the planned output. There were no major readjustments as to the source of crude-oil production, Baku district still accounting for the largest share; that, is, 77.21 per cent of the total. Exploration operations were outstandingly successful during the past year, major discoveries having been made on the Apsheron Peninsula, in Grozny and Maikop-Kuban districts, in Ural-Permian Basin, in Middle Volga-Samara district and other areas.

THE basic problem in the generation of water gas from carbonaceous fuels and steam is the supply of the heat of reaction, and in general the source of this heat is the combustion of a further quantity of carbon with oxygen. Existing and proposed processes for complete gasification differ in the methods employed for transferring this heat to the fuel, and involve one or other of the following alternatives: 1. Use of a steam-oxygen mixture as the gasifying medium, so that the combustion and gasification reactions are combined. 2. Alternate passage of air and steam through a fixed bed, as in conventional water-gas production. 3. Cyclic passage of fluidized fuel through combustion and gasification zones. 4. Intense preheating of steam and of a portion of the gas made, and recirculation of this mixture through the fuel bed. 5. Supply of heat to the fuel bed through an externally heated wall. Except for the conventional water-gas process using large coke or low- volatile coal, only processes in the first group, operating with steam and oxygen, have proved practicable with fuels other than brown coals and lignites. A possible exception, which has not so far reached a commercial scale, is the moving-burden process developed by Imperial Chemical Indus- tries, Ltd. The cost of industrial oxygen is so high that its use can probably be justified only if it is attended by substantial savings in other directions; for instance, the use of cheap fuel. In the United Kingdom, no very cheap solid fuels are available, and it is unlikely that an oxygen-gasification process could compete economically with conventional production of blue water gas from coke. Hence particular interest attaches to all possibilities of making water gas without using oxygen, if any possible saving in fuel or other costs is involved. The cheapest and most abundant coals in the United Kingdom are the low-rank noncaking bituminous coals in small and ungraded sizes, typically those from the East Midlands coal field, and-fines of high ash content produced in coal-cleaning operations. THE fact that a symposium on pyrometry is being held under the auspices of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers may very properly be taken as a recognition of the importance of temperature measurements and control in production and in the industries, and of the need for instruction in pyrometry in our schools of engineering. Though there may be general agreement as to the need of some instruction along this line, there will undoubtedly be divergence of opinion as to the amount of time that can be allowed to such instruction, as well as to its character. Those who have given little attention to the complexity of high-temperature measurements will be apt to think that a few simple experiments are all that is required. They fail to distinguish between the artisan, who merely has to learn how to use any piece of apparatus that is installed, and the technically trained man, who must be prepared to assume the responsibility for the supervision and maintenance of the pyrometric equipment, for the calibration of the instruments, and for the solution of any temperature problems that arise. In approaching this subject two questions present themselves: What should be the character of the instruction in pyrometry in an engineering school, and what can be expected of the students who have had this instruction? In brief, it may be said that the aims of a course in pyrometry should be to give: (1) A thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of thermoelectric, resistance, radiation, and optical pyrometry, and of liquid and gas thermometry; (2) practical instruction in the calibration of pyrometers; (3) acquaintance with the errors that are likely to arise and the precautions that must be observed in practice; (4) information regarding the limitations of the various classes of instruments, their relative reliability, and the accuracy attainable with them at different temperatures; (5) acquaintance with the commercial instruments on the market, their construction and relative merits; (6) a knowledge of the chief sources of information relating to the measurement of high and low temperatures. Lead blast-furnace work at Trail is unique in that this is the only plant in the world where blast-furnace smelting on a large scale for both lead and zinc recovery is carried on under one management. On this account the factors that determine economic practice differ from those of other lead smelters. In addition to this different metallurgical outlook, a great deal of structural investigation has been carried on, which has resulted in the development of a furnace which should prove of interest to all who are faced with similar problems. This description may be conveniently divided into various heads as follows: (1) General—make-up of charge, etc.; (2) structural—(a) hoods and charging methods, (b) shaft construction, (c) crucible construction; (3) handling slag; (4) handling bullion; (5) metallurgy. The Charge The Trail plant is an old one, on a congested site. As with most old plants, this limits the method of charge preparation. In general, lead metallurgists will agree that sinter when it reaches the blast furnace should contain as small an amount as possible of actual fines. There would be some difference of opinion as to the maximum size as well as of the minimum required, but to obtain the optimum condition some form of screening is indicated. This screening should take place immediately before the blast furnace if possible, and because sinter deteriorates in storage there should be as little as possible. There should also be the minimum amount of handling between the sinter machines and the furnaces. Unfortunately, at Trail the sinter must be handled considerably before it is charged to the furnace, and no feasible scheme of screening has yet been devised. Trail practice, then, demands that the sinter be a strong one physically. Dependent upon the amount of lead in it, it has been found advantageous to incorporate granulated slag into the final sinter, the amount varying inversely as the lead content. The addition of this slag makes a harder sinter, which arrives at the blast furnace in a better condition, but it entails some lack of efficiency, because desulphuriza-tion is not so rapid nor so complete.

Production of oil by expansion from a cylindrical reservoir composed of two concentric regions of different properties has been determined as a function of time for a reservoir producing at constant terminal pressure. The parameters involved are permeability, porosity, compressibility and oil viscosity. Results agree with those of a generally accepted method for uniform reservoirs when all parameters are taken as uniform. Cumulative production at any given time is reduced below that of the uniform reservoir when a region of considerably lower permeability adjoins the well; cumulative production increases when a high-permeability region adjoins the well. Curves are presented illustrating quantitative effects of these variations. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs can be exploited by release of pressure and consequent expansion of underground fluid. During part of the production history of certain reservoirs by this mechanism, fluid compressibility can be considered small and constant. Cumulative fluid produced by this means as a function of time was calculated for a uniform reservoir by van Everdingen and Hurst.l For certain cases where a production well has been damaged or where an acid treatment has been used, a zone of properties different from those of the reservoir may be created around the production well. In such a case, expansion of the reservoir fluid takes place in a system composed of two concentric cylindrica1 regions of different reservoir properties. Such composite systems were studied in connection with heat flow by Jaeger2 who presented a solution for temperature distribution in a radial system with an infinitely large outer radius. Similar heat flow problems have been studied by other authors Oil production from composite reservoirs was studied for constant production rate by Hurst,4 Loucks and Guerrero,5 and Carter.6 THEORY This work considers constant terminal pressure. Cumulative flow is calculated for a composite bounded system in which no flow takes place across the outer boundary (Fig. 1). Since the flow is considered to be purely radial, the problem involves only one space dimension and time. It is convenient to define the following dimen-sionless pressure drops (Fig. 1).

The substance known as carbonite, or natural coke, has been several times the subject of comment before the Institute. The most important contribution hitherto made to the discussion is that of Dr. Henry Wurtz, of Hoboken,* who states, upon the strength of a chemical analysis, that carbonite is not a coke, but contains 14.08 per cent. of volatile combustible matter. In 1882 a mine was opened upon a carbonite seam, near Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Va., by Messrs. Jewett & Brother, of that place. The seam, which dips westerly at an angle of about 30 degrees, was struck at the depth of 137 feet with a vertical shaft, and followed on the dip 325 feet, at which depth gangways were opened north and sooth. For these statements (having made no personal examination of the locality), I am indebted to Mr. Albert Blair, of Richmond, and for the following section, to Mr. John Bladon, engineer at the mine. The section was taken in the face of the gangway, February 17th, 1883. It shows an aggregate thickness of 15 feet of "coke," of which about 5 feet were extracted by the system employed last winter. It is reported that under the "coke" seam there is a thick seam of highly bituminous coal, which has been extensively worked on a neighboring property, a little south of the Jewett colliery, the coal being sold for gas-waking. The principles involved in lifting oil in wells flowing naturally are identical with those underlying the flowing of wells by means of the air-gas lift, and information of a dependable nature obtained in the study of the air-lift can be applied to wells with natural flow. A well flowing naturally is one in which the lifting is done by means of the gas-lift, for which the gas is supplied entirely by the formation from which the oil is derived. In air-gas lift operations, there is insufficient gas supplied by the formation to lift the oil to the surface in an efficient manner, therefore additional gas for this purpose must be furnished from an outside source. There may, at times, be conditions obtaining in natural flowing wells different from those in wells flowed by gas-lift, but these differences do not at all conflict with the main principles of gas-lift work. One such condition is met with in wells in which the gas supplied by the formation is in considerable excess of that required to lift the oil to surface; this excess may be so great as to reduce the quantity of oil that can be lifted through the particular diameter of casing or tubing that has been lowered into the well. This same condition can be brought about, however, by supplying a large excess of gas from an outside source to an artificial gas-lift well, and a study of the effects obtained from injecting a large excess into the well can be applied directly to handling wells flowing naturally which have a large excess of gas supplied by the underground reservoir. Conditions for Lifting Oil The main factors to be considered in flowing wells are as follows: 1. Submergence, or pressure at the bottom of the tubing or casing. 2. Lift; the height to which the liquid must be raised. 3. Diameter of the flow tubing or casing. 4. Quantity of liquid to be lifted. 5. Pressure at the discharge end of the flow tubing, or back-pressure, as it is sometimes called.

SAMPLES of REZn2 (RE = rare earth) intermetallic compounds prepared by a variety of techniques have been shown to exhibit an extensively twinned micro-structure.1-4 We have recently conducted compression tests at room temperature on specimens of HoZn2 prepared by a powder metallurgy technique.' The microstructures of specimens before and after testing are shown in Fig. 1. The "before" specimen, Fig. l(a), shows the basic twin structure of this material. PETROLEUM engineers are displaying considerable interest in those fundamental properties of matter and energy that control the phenomena of oil and gas production. The subject is a difficult one to investigate by laboratory experiments for two reasons: (1) it is impossible to reproduce in the laboratory the scale of forces and dimensions that exist in the underground reservoir; (2) if we attempt to scale down the dimensions we are unable to reduce all proportionally. It is as if we tried to construct a model blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore, and reduced all lineal dimensions. We should find that the interstices between the miniature chunks of ore would not .permit rapid transfer of gases, that combustion and heat transfer would not take place as in the full size furnace and that, in short, the contraption would not work. Just so, when we attempt to make a reduced scale oil field we find we must have, not only miniature reservoir and miniature wells, but "miniature" sand, oil, gas, etc. Much valuable work, however, has been done along these experimental lines and more will no doubt follow, but investigators should bear this point in mind and strive to attain dimensional homogeneity and dynamical similarity in order that their conclusions may be translated into terms applying to the oil reservoir. As Gibson says,1 "These conditions are attained when all terms of the physical equation have the same dimensions, . . . when all corresponding particles of the two systems trace out similar paths and when the velocities are such as to make all corresponding forces acting on two such particles in the same ratio. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the mechanics of fluid movement as it pertains to the oil pool and to point out the complexity of the laws of fluid delivery under the conditions often found.

Immiscible displacement tests were performed in a consolidated sandstone core over the interfacial tension range from less thdn 0.01 to 5 dynes/cm to better define how interfacial tension (IFTJ reduction can lead to increased oil recovery. Data obtained were displacement efficiency at breakthbrough vs IFT for both drainage and imbibition conditions. These tests simulate water flooding under oil-wet and water-wet conditions, respectively. Results of the study have shown that displacement efficiency under both oil-wet and water-wet conditions can be markedly improved by a sufficient reduction in IFT. In the particular porous media used and for the low pressure gradients employed, the IFT must be reduced to a value less than about 0.07 dynes/cm to achieve increased recovery at the time of breakthrough of the injected phase. Below 0.07 dynes /cm, further small reductions in IFT result in large increases in displacement efficiency. Observed increases in recovery were obtained at pressure gradients which are well below those which can exist in the interwell area of a reservoir under water flood. The effect of pressure gradient on recovery is discussed. INTRODUCTION A residual oil saturation remains in rock which has been water flooded because, under usual reservoir conditions, the driving force which can be generated is inadequate to expel oil trapped by capillary forces. Since these capillary forces can be reduced by reducing the IFT a frequently studied method of increasing oil recovery has been the use of surfactants to reduce the water-oil interfacial tension. Mungan l observed improved recovery in both water-wet and oil-wet systems at 1.1 dyne /cm IFT, finding that the amount of improvement was greater in oil-wet systems. Moore and Blum,2 working with visual flow cell micro-models, con- cluded that recovery cannot be improved in water-wet systems by injecting surfactant solutions. They calculated that, for a pressure gadient of 1 psi/ft in their model, the IFT must be reduced to 0.03 dynes/cm to release oil trapped under water-wet conditions. Berkeley et al.3 indicated that, at representative field flooding rates, the IFT must be reduced to 0.001 dyne/cm to improve recovery, Thus, there is a wide variation of opinion about the IFT levels needed to improve recovery under field conditions. These previous investigators all have used as their experimental method the addition of surfactants to the injected water. The use of surfactant solutions to reduce IFT creates two experimental problems: (1) the loss of surfactant through adsorption on reservoir rock can obscure the true IFT value which exists at the displacement front, and (2) at very low values of IFT emulsifica-tion of oil and water commonly occurs. It is difficult, therefore, to determine whether the increased recovery is caused by IFT reduction as such, or is instead caused by emulsification. Also the properties of the available surfactants limit the IFT range which can be studied. In the present study the purpose is to better define how interfacial tension reduction can lead to increased oil recovery. A matter of great interest is the amount of recovery improvement potentially achievable in this way. The study was made using very low pressure gradients which was well within the range achievable by water flooding in the interwell region of petroleum reservoirs. A unique experimental approach was chosen to avoid adsorption and emulsification problems, and to allow convenient control of IFT. The fluid phases used were the equilibrium vapor and liquid phases of the methane-n-pentane system. The interfacial tension level was varied by changing the equilibrium pressure of the methane-pentane system over the range from 1,200 psia to near the critical pressure (2,420 psia). All tests were performed at a controlled temperature of 100F. The IFT-vs-pressure relationship for the methane-pentane system was based on the data of Stegemeier and Hough,6 and on new data obtained in this study. With this experimental approach it has been possible to study displacement at lower values of IFT than have been previously investigated.

Single crystals qf copper in "single slip" orientatiorzs have been deformed in compression. During defortnation all of the independent deformation parameters have been measured. These parameters consist of thefive strain components and three components descrihing the lattice rotation. By a finite strain analysis these pararmeters , forrming a deformation gradient martrix, are related to the amounts of slip on each of the twelve slip systems. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is about equal to the amount of primary slip. This is an order of magnitude larger than has been believed previoutsly. ACCORDING to early theory and experiments, when a single crystal of a fcc metal is deformed in tension or compression it should deform by slip on only one slip system until the stress axis reaches a symmetrical orientation.' However. the observation of a large increase in the secondary dislocation density during ..single slip" makes it clear that some slip does occur on secondary systems. Knowledge of the amount and distribution of this secondary slip is essential to a complete understanding of the mechanisms of single-crystal deformation. Ahlers and Haasen 2 and Mitchell and Thornton1 have tried to detect the amount of secondary slip in single crystals of silver and copper, respectively. Each simultaneously measured the angle A, between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and the length 1 of a gage section of the specimen after incremental amounts of deformation in tension. The measured A, was then compared with the theoretical single slip angle hp. given by sin Ap = j sin . hO where ?o was the initial angle between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and lo was the initial gage length. In both sets of experiments a small but systematic difference between ?e and ?p was found. This difference must be due to the occurrence of secondary slip. However, as Mitchell and Thornton1 pointed out. nothing quantitative can be said about the amount and distribution of this secondary slip from the measurements that they made. The reason that no quantitative conclusions could be made is because no unique solution for the distribution of slip on the twelve fcc slip systems can be determined from only two measured deformation parameters such as A and 1. There are, in fact, eight independent macroscopic deformation parameters that can be measured when a single crystal undergoes a homogeneous deformation. Physically these can be thought of as the five finite strain components and the three angles describing the crystal lattice rotation. All eight of these parameters were measured by Taylor4,5 for aluminum deformed in tension and compression. At that time the concern was to show that slip occurs on {111 (110) systems in fcc metals, and the mathematics were not available to determine what slip distributions were compatible with the measurements. In this paper the mathematics6,7 are developed that allow the slip distribution to be determined from these measurable macroscopic deformation parameters. The analysis is applied to the measurements of the strain and lattice rotation of copper single crystals deformed in compression. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is an order of magnitude larger than had previously been thought. The Mascot mines of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee are situated at Mascot, Tenn., 14 miles northeast of Knoxville, on the Southern Railway. The district is centrally located in the Great Valley, or Appalachian Valley Province. Prior to 1900, a small output of zinc was obtained from oxidized ore mined in open pits. In 1900, a shaft was sunk to sulfide ore, and in 1903, a second shaft was put down, neither being as deep as 200 ft. The American Zinc Co. of Tennessee began drilling in 1911, and outlined an ore-body to which its No. 1 shaft was sunk, to a depth of 365 ft. Since that time, the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee has been the only operator in the district. The Federal mining laws have never been in operation in Tennessee and mining lands are as irregular in boundary and area as farm lands. Ownerships are generally held in fee. In most cases the surface and mineral rights are transferred together. Electric power is supplied at 66,000 volts by the Tennessee Power Co., from a hydro-electric plant at Parksville, Polk County, Tenn., 100 miles from Mascot. No other power is used, but an emergency steam plant is held ready in case of interruption of service. Labor is all native and non-union. Negroes are employed for most of the shoveling, and for a few miscellaneous jobs, but for almost no other work. Exploration Exploration is carried ahead of mining largely by surface drilling. Both churn and diamond drills are used. Holes are not spotted according to geometric plan, but to block out ore outlines with the least number of holes. Churn-drill cuttings from each 5-ft. run are mounted for formation record, and in ore ground, all the bailings from each 3 ft. of advance are sampled and assayed. This paper describe; open pit studies where blasting damage introduced in the remaining rock has been investigated. Results from two open pit mines are described and discussed. Parallel performed laboratory experiments, where simulated blasting damage has been introduced into samples before shear strength testing took place, are also reviewed. These studies are tied together in order to throw some light upon how the blasting damage influences the slope stability. A mathematical model is also described which will make it possible to optimize the blast design for a specified damage zone in the rock mass.
