The purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resourcee, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigatioil pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnois-sance was attempted: such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their

This work was first undertaken for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1919-20, by C. E. Julihn, superintendent of the station at Minneapolis. Learning of the interest, in this subject, of B. F. Tillson, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., Mr. Julihn and Mr. Foley went to Franklin, N. J., and discussed the matter with him. A conference in Chicago, in November, 1920, was attended by Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who was then Director of the Bureau of Mines, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines and of the hlissouri School of Mines and Metallurgy; at this time a cooperative plan of work was agreed upon by the Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines. In February, 1921, Mr. 'Tillson arranged a conference on this subject at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, at which several technical papers were presented. In a paper, the Breakage and Heat Treatment of Hock Drill Stcels, he suggested a program that might be carried out in connection with the investigation of the problem. At this conference Mr. Manning, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, suggested the formation of an advisory committee to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards for prosecution of this investigation. On Feb. 20, 1922, a secoud conference in New York, at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of mlining and Metallurgical Engineers, was attended by representatives of various technical societies. At this meeting, the report of Nov. 20, 1921, of the Chiefs of Divisions of Metallurgy of the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards, was discussed and it was agreed: 1. That the survey recommended by the two bureaus should be undertaken, which survey would have for its object the ascertaining of the present status of the practice of the heat treatment of drill steels, the extent to which the breakage occurs, etc.; and 2. That a report should be presented, of the findings of those who made the survey, to the Advisory Board to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards. The Bureau of Standards assigned $4000 to the prosecution 01 a three-months' survey, which was carried out in April, May, and June, 1922, of about sixty mines

The Globe Mining District is in the southeast central part of Arizona, in Gila County. Globe, with a population of about 7000, is the terminus of the Arizona Eastern R.R., a branch line 130 miles long that connects with the Southern Pacific R.R. at Bowie. In 1874, prospectors crossing the Pinal Mountains from the west located what is generally known as the Old Dominion mine. For several years, it attracted little attention, because of the greater interest aroused by the discovery of high-grade silver ores in some of the foothills northeast of Globe. About six years later, the prospector turned his attention to the abundant copper ore revealed by surface workings along the Old Dominion vein, and, in 1884, the Old Dominion company erected two 30-ton furnaces. From 1888 to 1893, the Old Dominion company is said to have maintained an average annual production of about 8,000,000 Ib. of copper. Until Dec. 1, 1898, all supplies had to be freighted into Globe by wagons and the mines of the district operated intermittently because of high expenses, but with the advent of the railroad the Old Dominion company continued to be a large and steady producer. In the Globe district, the production of copper far exceeds in importance that of any other metal. There are four operating companies along the Old Dominion vein and the total annual product of these properties for 1923 was about 45,000,000 lb. of copper. The unit size of the mineral tracts in the district is the regulation mining claim, 600 ft. wide by 1500 ft. long, and all ownerships are held in fee. Globe is 3600 ft. above sea level, and lies between the Apache MOUntains to the east and the Pinal Mountains to the west. The principal drainage of the district is northward through Pinal creek into the Salt River. The general slope from the high point along the vein, where the Superior & Boston mine is, to Pinal creek, where the Old Dominion mines are, is about 250 ft. to the mile. Geology The oldest rocks in the district are pre-Cambrian crystalline schists known as the Pinal schist, which are the basement upon which all the later rocks were deposited. A theoretical investigation has been made of the forward combustion process using a one-dimensional linear mathematical model, taking into consideration the effect of the vaporization-condensation which occurs on the leading edge of the heat wave. This work involves the solution of five coupled partial differential equations. Besides the vaporization-condensation phenomenon, these equations account for conduction, convection, combustion, heat loss, diffusion and bulk fluid flow. For the one-dimensional linear model studied, the vaporization-condensation phenomenon does not induce appreciable change in the temperature at the combustion front; and its primary effect is to create a steam plateau and to increase the length of the heated zone ahead of the combustion front. This effect becomes more pronounced at lower pressures, higher porosities or reduced gas saturations. The peak temperature and the temperature profile on the leading edge of the heat wave stabilize after a certain period. The length of the steam bank remains practically constant, although the length of the water bank increases as the heat wave advances. INTRODUCTION The existence of the vaporization-condensation phenomenon in the heat-wave process and the important role played by the phenomenon have been recognized by several investigators. Kuhn and Kochl stated that steam plateaus were frequently observed on the temperature records of their experiments. The steam plateaus were attributed primarily to the vaporization and subsequent condensation of the interstitial water existing in the oil sand. Szasz2 suggested that both lighter hydrocarbons and water are vaporized on the leading edge of the heat wave, carried forward in the gas stream, and then condensed to create banks of oil and water. Martin et al suggested that the vaporization-condensation phenomenon is one of the main mechanisms of the heat-wave process, along with thermal expansion and viscosity reduction. Wilson et al. reported the existence of a steam plateau several inches in length in their small-scale tube-run experiments. However, this important phenomenon has never been taken into consideration in the numerous theoretical analyses by various authors. 5 The purpose of this work was to study the thermal aspects of a linear heat wave, taking into consideration the vaporization-condensation on the leading edge of the wave, to determine the effect of this phenomenon on the temperature profile of the reservoir, and to investigate how this effect varies when other process variables are changed. THEORY We consider a reservoir of porous medium of cross-sectional area A, extending from x = 0 to x = L. This reservoir contains, aside from the solid matrix itself, a gas phase and a "combined liquid phase" which is a combination of two immiscible liquid phases — namely, an oil phase and a water phase. The oil present in the reservoir is assumed to consist of three fractions, a noncondensable gas, a nondistillable residuum, and a vaporizable oil fraction which may be present in both the gas phase and liquid phase. Before the heat-wave process begins, preheating has taken place and has imparted an initial temperature distribution T,(x) to the reservoir. At the start of the process, a stream of oxygen-bearing gas is introduced through the face at x = 0. This gas supports the combustion of the residual fuel and supplies the heat throughout the process. In order to develop a tractable system of equations, the model properties are postulated as follows: (1) the system is isotropic and homogeneous; (2) there is a uniform fuel content throughout the reservoir; (3) combustion takes place in a moving vertical planar region of infinitesimal thickness; (4) the temperatures of the fluids and the solid matrix are identical; (5) radiation is negligible; (6) the gas and liquid saturations are uniform throughout the reservoir and remain unchanged

Zinc monocrystals, when compressed nearly parallel to their basal planes (within 20), deform in a new way; and certain deformation markings, called "-bands," are typical of this new mode. Characteristics of these bands are described. Mechanical behavior of low angle zinc monocrystals was investigated in some detail. Recrystallization did not occur upon annealing of banded specimens that were free of deformation twins. -Bands do not seem to be the result of nonbasal slip, but rather, a result of a microbuckling mechanism. u-Bands differ qualitatively and quantitatively from ortho kink bands. A dislocation model, consistent with some of the features of u-bands, is described. THE plastic deformation of zinc monocrystals with slip planes (0001) nearly parallel to the stress axis was studied in this investigation. In a previous investigation, it was shown that some low angle zinc crystals (those with slip planes making angles of more than about 2.5+1° with the compression axis), deform by ortho kinking while others (those with slip planes making angles of less than 2.5+1° with the compression axis) deform in a new way.' This new mode of deformation will be described in some detail here. Some of its striking features are: 1—it operates only for compressive stresses, 2—its temperature dependence is anomalous, and 3—it exhibits a new type of "yield-point" behavior. The mode of deformation to be discussed is not new in the sense that no previous evidence of its existence had been reported. The markings that it creates on the cleavage surfaces of zinc crystals have been described by several investigators.'" However, this is the first time that it has been made to operate under controlled conditions so that its response to mechanical variables, temperature, and aging treatments could be investigated and its geometry completely described. Apparently. Jillson' as well as Holden3 and Pratt" believed that the small bands they observed were simply small versions of ortho kink bands. In fact, two of these authors3,6 "alled the markings "micro kink bands." In spite of the precedence, it is felt that this term is not entirely suitable because these bands do not have the same genesis as kink bands, and they are qualitatively different in structure. As will be indicated by later discussion, the bands seem to be related to the tensile deformation bands observed in aluminum. The present author has chosen to call the bands "micro deformation bands," or simply ",ubands," and the deformation process, ''p-banding." Experimental Methods Crystals were grown from 99.999+ pct Zn obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. The details of the technique are given elsewhere." It should suffice to say that the crystals were seeded for orientation control, and precision pyrex tubes were used for molding them. About 40 crystals were used, yielding some 130 specimens. Fig. 1 illustrates the typical form of the specimens and shows how the orientation angles are defined. The crystal specimens were usually 1 3/4 in. long and about 150 mil in diameter. The angle between the slip or cleavage plane (0001) and the specimen axis is designated by xo, while a is the angle between the maximum slope of the (0001) plane and the nearest close-packed direction [1210], vary ing from 0°to 30°. The crystals were cut into specimens with a jeweler's saw and the ends were squared by filing (specimens held in V-block). Crystals of this orientation are stiff toward bending, so this procedure introduced only deformation localized at the ends. Then the specimens were polished either chemically in 50 pct HNO³ or electrolytically in 20 pct chromic acid. The mechanical tests were made with an Instron testing machine. This machine weighs by means of electric strain gages on elastic bars and is quite stiff, since the full-load deflection of its load cells is at most 0.002 in. Most of the testing was done at a

THE place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past 10 years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. At the end the relationship of our findings to the curriculum that has been tentatively adopted at the University of Pittsburgh will be considered. DIVISIONS IN DEFINITION OF FIELD OF GEOPHYSICS Geophysics is that field of science in which geological and earth problems are solved with the use of physical and chemical techniques. Altogether too much attention has been paid to the artificial separation in this science of the commercial applications from the so-called "pure" or academic geophysics. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of financial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or so of the earth's. crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

Nickel corrosion in sulfuric acid solutions at elevated temperatures and oxygen wer-pressures was imestigated. Weight loss was 1inear with time and varied directly with oxygen concentration. Independent variation of the possible active species in solution indicated that the undissociated sulfuric acid molecule plays an important part in the corrosion mechanism. The rate determining step was considered to be the adsorption of oxygen on a site containing adsorbed H2SO4. THE tendency for a metal to go into solution depends on a number of factors some of which are: 1) the position of the metal in the electrochemical series; 2) the type and concentration of corroding species in solution; 3) the concentration of oxygen in solution; 4) the type of film formed at the liquid-metal interface; and 5) the physical state of the metal. The corrosion of a metal in an aqueous solution may be considered to be a heterogeneous reaction that occurs at the liquid-metal interface. The reaction is generally considered to occur as a result of electrochemical potential differences within the system. Little work has been published in the literature concerning the corrosion of pure nickel. A great deal has been publistled dealing with the experimental and theoretical aspects of the over-all corrosion process. Evans,1 Uhlig,' and recently Todt 3 and Tomashoff,4 have published books which review the results of experiments which have been conducted on corrosion, and have developed some of the basic ideas of the more widely accepted theories of corrosion. Friend5 states that. nickel does not readily discharge hydrogen from any of the common nonoxidiz-ing acids and that a supply of some oxidizing agent is necessary for appreciable rates of corrosion. He further notes that at temperatures between atmospheric and close to boiling, corrosion rates tend to vary with concentration, temperature, and aeration in acid concentrations up to 25 pct. Whitman and Russel6 studied the effect of dissolved oxygen on a number of metals in acid solutions and found that oxygen accelerates the rate of corrosion of nickel in sulfuric acid. Flowers and Kelley7 in studying the action of dissolved CO, on electroplated nickel postulated that nickel dissolves as NiHCO3 in the presence of CO, and air. It was found that oxygen was necessary for corrosion to take place and that the rate increased with increasing amounts of oxygen in solution. Flowers and Kelley attributed the oxygen effect to cathodic depolarization. MacGillavry, Rosenbaum, and wensson' determined metal solution potentials of nickel in various electrolytes. They found that nickel has no tendency to corrode in alkaline solutions in the presence or absence of air. In acid solutions in the presence of air, metal solution potential increases in the order of 1/2 v were observed. This increase was attributed to probable chemisorption of oxygen on the nickel surface and the corrosion mechanism suggested was the interaction of H+ ions with the nickel oxide formed at the surface. Delahay9 observed the reduction of oxygen on various metals. A polarograph was used to measure the course of the reaction. With some metals hydrogen peroxide was produced as an intermediate compound. However, nickel was not considered to be a hdrogen peroxide producer. Van Rysselberghe 10,11 and associates attributed the accelerating effect of carbon dioxide on the corrosion process to the presence of percarbonic acid produced in solution reacting with the hydrogen peroxide. The percarbonic acid can be reduced at less negative potentials than hydrogen peroxide and as a result accelerates the reaction. EXPERIMENTAL Since a complete description of the apparatus used can be obtained elsewhere,12'13 no attempt will be made here to describe the equipment other than to note that it consisted essentially of an autoclave unit from which samples could be withdrawn periodically without disturbing the interior state of the autoclave. A titanium autoclave liner was used to protect the autoclave from the solution.

The hammer drill rightly receives the credit for having made the one-man drill possible, and so many economies seem possible through the proper application of :different types of hammer drills to various mining, quarrying, and, excavating operations, that an indication of the economies effected by the New Jersey Zinc Co. at its Franklin mines may be of pertinent interest. When this company commenced its trials of hammer drills in 1907, these tools had not I been developed to one-fourth the capacity and refinement which they have at present. At that time it was frequently stated that such a small tool, drilling holes of less diameter than the reciprocating rock drill, could not drill enough holes in a shift to permit the placing of sufficient explosive to break a tonnage of ore comparable with that produced by the"' rock drills;" that the placing of small holes inclined upward, at angles steeper than 40° above the horizontal, could not be expected to produce results equal to the large flat, wet or dry, holes in the breasted back of an overhand stope, and would only shatter the ground so as to make the back unsafe. In' spite of these adverse opinions, the hammer drills first showed their superiority over both heavy and light reciprocating drills in raising and in stoping, and then in drifting and quarry work. As a result, all of the reciprocating drills at the Franklin mines were scrapped, three years ago, all of the mining work being accomplished with increased efficiency, as shown in detail in this article. With the advent of the hammer drill in this property, it was considered advisable to make comparative tests of all the tools accessible, and it has since been the policy to investigate the merits of any advance of the drilling art in order to get the maximum amount of work from the tools. The necessity of devising some means of standardizing drill tests, and of measuring the consumption of compressed air as well as the drilling speed, was early realized.

Slip-line studies on deformed chromium single cvystals showed the usual bcc behavior. At room temperatuve, cross slip was prevalent—slip was not confined to a given plane, but the slip direction was (111). At -10O0K, slip occuvred on (110) planes, twins on(112) planes, and cleavage on (1001 planes. A single-crystal tensile specimen with an axis close to [011] showed a pronounced yield drop and high strain rate sensitivity which zclere used to derive relevant parame tevs in a dislocation dynamics treatment. Transmission electron microscope studies confirmed the existence of (110) slip planes and showed ecidence of loops punched out by precipitates and of grown-in dislocations promoting tangling. OF recent years experimental studies have been made of the deformation characteristics of single-crystal molybdenum and tungsten, but very little has been published on the behavior of single-crystal chromium. During a study of the mechanical properties of chromium, single-crystal studies were made which have already been partially described.&apos; However, additional information was generated which was not directly relevant to the main theme of Ref. 1, and, therefore, was not reported. In view of the need for complete documentation of deformation modes, the experimental observations made on the deformation of single-crystal chromium are summarized here, together with an electron-microscope study of the associated dislocation structures. It was found that, in terms of the deformation modes, chromium is a conventional bcc metal, showing a very pronounced yield-point phenomenon. Further, it was found that the flow strength of these crystals is very sensitive to the strain rate. Finally, the crystals were observed to contain many unidentified precipitates, which often were associated with prismatic dislocation loops. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Single crystals were grown from rods of wrought chromium by the method of zone annealing. Rods of "1/4in.-diam were supported vertically in an argon atmosphere while an induction coil was moved up the rod at 1 in. per hr. The power was adjusted to just below that required for melting, and the process produced single crystals in about 30 pct of the rods used. The orientations of the crystals, in general, lay near [011] and are summarized in Fig. 1. Before this treatment, the wrought material contained 35 pprn C, 68 ppm O, and 12 ppm N.* An analyzed single crystal *Usual metallic impurities found in iodide chromium are: Al, 5 ppm; Ca, A ppm; Cu, 2 ppm; Fe, 75 ppm; Yg, 0.5 ppm; Yn, < 3 ppm; Mo, < 3 ppm; Ni, 4 ppm; Si, < 20 ppm; Ti, < 1 ppm; V, 4 ppm; Zr, < 3 ppm. contained 10 pprn C, 79 ppm O, and 50 pprn N. Tension and compression specimens were shaped from the crystals by mechanical grinding, followed by the electrolytic removal of about 0.010 in. from the surface in a perchloric/acetic acid bath. All specimens had a gage length of 0.75 in., and tension specimens had a diameter of 0.100 in., while that of the compression samples was 0.200 in. Mechanical tests were carried out at a rate of 1.3 pct per min, and temperatures below 0°C were attained by means of a nitrogen cryostat similar to that of Wessel.2 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Modes of Deformation. In addition to the tensile properties of these crystals, which are described in Ref. 1, deformation markings on the surface were studied. Crystals A and F, Fig. 1, were deformed in tension at 300°K to 10 and 16 pct strain, respectively. The surfaces contained visible slip lines, about 1 C( apart, composed of both straight and wavy segments. They did not define a single plane, and so determination of the slip plane was not possible. However, the slip direction was deduced by comparing the axial orientations of the crystals before and after deformation. Fig. 2 is representative, and shows that the axis ro-

An analysis oj a series of samples of single -crystal silicon grown on sapphire shows that ,four distinct orientation relations exist. There are at least thirteen crystallographic planes which serve as substrates ,for epitaxial growth The model which assumes that silicon substitutes for aluminium and bonds with the oxygen atoms of the sapphire to form the first later for subsequent growth can account for the epitaxial geometry in all four cases. Multiplici-ties 01 specific orientations are found which are explained by the symmetry of both the sapphire and silicon crystal structures. It was reported in the previous paper&apos; that single-crystal silicon films can be deposited on single-crystal a A1,03 (sapphire) with a wide variety of orientations. The silicon films, however, were found to deposit in only four different orientation relationships with respect to the sapphire substrate. The X-ray data have been analyzed to determine the plane and direction of atomic fit and an atomic model to account for the epitaxial relationships at the silicon-sapphire interface has been developed. These results are described in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL The Laue X-ray data described in the previous paper were reduced to stereographic projections in a standard manner. These data were supplemented with X-ray reflection data obtained with -& E and A Full-Circle Goniometer (Electronics and Alloys, Inc.) mounted on a Phillips diffractometer unit. The silicon films were thin enough to result in characteristic reflections from the substrate as well as the silicon. The superimposed stereographic projections were analyzed to determine the orientation relationships. Ambiguities were resolved by referring to constructed models of various lattice planes for both silicon and sapphire. These lattice models were also used to develop the model for atom fit at the interface. DATA AND ANALYSIS 1) Crystal Structures. The crystallography of silico-n, which is of the diamond cubic class with a. = 5.4~, is straightforward. The sapphire structure is more complex and generally difficult to represent in pictorial form. It is of the rhombohedra1 class but usually referred to hexagonal axes. The transformation of indices between these two systems can lead to ambiguities which will have bearing on the analysis presented herein. Therefore, the basis used in this paper is described in the appendix. Referred to the hexagonal system, the parameters of sapphire are co = 12.95.&, a, = 4.75~, c/a = 2.73. All parameters are for room temperature. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate schematically the hexagonal unit cell model of sapphire used for this analysis. The oxygen atoms are assumed to occupy positions in an idealized hexagonal array on basal planes. Their actual positions are in a slightly distorted hexagonal array. The aluminum-atom positions are scaled to their actual positions in the lattice with respect to the basal layers of oxygen atoms. It was found that an idealized model where the aluminum atoms are assumed to lie exactly at the octahedral interstices of the oxygen lattice, similar to that used by ~ronberg,&apos; was not adequate for this study.

The Taconites Are Ready, the editorial appearing on P. 933 of the September issue, has provoked comment from several informed engineers to the effect that the indicated profit margin was considerably exaggerated. The cost figures in the editorial, taken from the Congressional Record, were characterized as inaccurate by some correspondents. The theme of the story was, however, substantiated in the announcement (P. 1023, October) that Republic and Armco had joined forces in a $160 million project for taconite development. Chief among the dissenters was E. W. Davis, , Director of the Mines Experiment Station at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Davis has worked up the following set of cost figures:

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

THE methods of sampling and ore estimating used at the Copper Queen Branch, Phelps Dodge Corpn., as applied to the Copper Queen mines at Bisbee, Ariz., fall into two divisions because of the difference in occurrence, manner of prospecting, and methods of mining: that for the underground operations and that for the Sacramento Hill steam-shovel operations. The orebodies of the Warren district may be divided into three classes: Replacements of limestone, replace-ments of porphyry, and replacements of contact breccia The first class is more or less intimately related to porphyry intrusions, although in badly fractured country this relationship may not be well shown. These orebodies are mainly oxide and carbonate ore and very irregular, both in size and outline, although usually roughly lenticular and following the bedding of the limestones. There is usually quite a sharp boundary between the ore and waste in the carbonate and oxide orebodies and sampling is not necessary to determine the limits of commercial ore. In the sulfide orebodies it is exceedingly difficult, without sampling, to deter-mine the boundary between commercial ore and the surrounding low-grade or barren pyrite. Calculations made a few years ago showed that these orebodies had an average thickness of 35 ft. As some of the ore-bodies have a thickness of from 100 to 300 ft., it can be seen that the smaller ones form a difficult problem both in prospecting and in estimating.

Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.

THE real and permanent advances which take place in any industry are for the most part slow evolutions which frequently develop and grow almost imperceptibly from clay to clay. A meritorious idea may and generally does require long and patient development and commercial application under a variety of conditions and in a number of localities before it emerges as standard and generally accepted practice. There must be not only technical perfection but also economic advantage. Thus a cross-section taken at any particular time of an industry may reveal little that is distinctly new and yet there may have been considerable progress. During the past year there has been little that is new in milling and yet there has been real progress; some problems have been solved and some of what we may term the newer developments have become more firmly, established.

A PRevioUs study1 of the relations of impact strength to inclusions showed that the dynamic strength of steel is lowered by the presence of visible counted inclusions, but that other factors comprised in the term "body" have a marked influence. The previous work was carried out on selected steels from a single source, so that the body factor was purposely minimized, but even under these conditions it was found that inclusion counting or the use of the commercial inclusion rating is not satisfactory. The tensile-impact test, however, was indicated as a satisfactory measure of dynamic strength. It was further suggested that the tensile-impact test should be so standardized as to be suitable for use in specifications, and that the hardness factor should be worked out over a sufficient range to admit ready commercial use of the tensile-impact test. In accordance with these suggestions, and in view of the fact that the steels reported in the previous paper were selected and treated so as to have a minimum variation in body, hardness and structure, further work has been performed on a variety of steels which are not limited by these conditions. The word "body" is used here for want of a better term. It is simply a convenient expression which comprises the effect, of the various unknown factors that modify the dynamic strength of the steel. Thus at our present state of knowledge, the writers have chosen to consider hardness, structure and counted inclusion content as factors not comprised in the term "body," and such factors as raw materials, process of melting, fabricating, etc., as comprised in the term "body." Numerous grades of steels made in several ways have been taken from different sources and have been heat-treated to varying hardness by normalizing and by quenching and drawing. The results, therefore, may be considered to be generally applicable to current engineering steels. The repressuring of oil-producing formations during the flush stage of production, although requiring primarily the same procedure as operations on formations where the gas pressure has been depleted, offers several advantages of major importance, the value of which has not heretofore been demonstrated. It is the purpose of this paper to present an account of some recent operations of this character and the economic effects on the properties where they were applied. The principal objective in all repressuring operations is to secure an effective diffusion of the input energy to all parts of the producing sand. If this can be accomplished, success is assured during the remainder of the life of the property; if not, it will be temporary only and will be followed by difficulties, .and the maximum possible recovery will not be obtained. During the past year in Texas, the Cook pool in Shackelford County, and the Turbeville pool in Archer County, while still in their flush stage of production, have been subjected to repressuring operations to observe their reaction to this process during the early stage of their productive periods. The repressuring operations carried on in each of these pools will be discussed separately in this paper in order to show peculiarities which were present in one pool but were not observed in the other. Turbeville Pool The Turbeville pool is in Archer County, about 30 rniles south of Wichita Falls. The productive sand varies in thickness from 10 to 30 ft., the average being about 16 ft. The depth of the sand varies from 1450 to 1530 ft. The developed productive area to date is approximately 200 acres, but the limits of the pool have not yet been proved. The sand varies considerably in different parts of the pool with respect to both porosity and permeability. The gravity of the oil varies from 39 to 41° A. P. I. There were some wells which flowed for a few days after completion but during 1927 all production was secured by pumping. The

Albert Sauveur, Cambridge, Mass.:—I believe that I have the privilege, this instant, of opening one of the most important, significant and far-reaching discussions ever held before this Institute. I believe that our talk this morning will be heard far and wide, not only on this side of the water, but also on the other side. Everywhere, in short, where steel is manufactured. I welcome the opportunity of expressing my mind in regard to the production of sound steel ingots, a subject about which I entertain Rome very decided opinions. I shall not attempt to discuss the relative merits of the various processes that have been described. I shall, on the contrary, confine myself to a general consideration of the important questions before us. So intensely do I feel regarding the production of sound steel ingots that I have put my remarks on paper in my desire to present my views. I have always remembered my astonishment, not to say dismay, some twenty years ago, when I beheld for the first time a steel ingot, a rail steel ingot, that had been split open from top to bottom. There was the pipe! There was an enormous cavity extending from a short distance from the top to nearly one-third of the length of the ingot; and when I was told that manufacturers seldom discarded more than one-tenth of the total length of the ingot it became evident to me that a large proportion of piped, and therefore, defective, or at least weak and dangerous, rails were manufactured; in fact, probably one rail out of six, nearly 17 per cent., of dangerous rails.
