DOCTOR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Member of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur's prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future responsibilities with which it is accompanied. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howe and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe's book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world's pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe's early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it. Howe's ability to stimulate others by his deep understanding and clarity of expression was truly remarkable; but just as striking was his intuitive judgment concerning the implications of metallurgical data in the arts and sciences. It therefore seems fitting that this lecture comprise a broad treatment of the subject chosen, rather than a closely documented thesis on any one phase of the problem; that in it attention be focused

DOES it pay to do really good work? Quite likely the practical millman will answer that it does not. The preparation of ores for market is primarily a business enterprise, and by and large the individual operator does not bother his head about squandering our national resources or making easier the job of the smelterman. Having accepted such ore as he may get fro111 the mine, his job is to make the best possible showing with his mill fro111 the standpoint of financial return. His success is measured in dollars and cents, and he has no rightful reason to expect more than scant acknowledgment of any other achievements from the stock- holders of his company who in the last analysis are his employers.

During the early history of the Lake Superior district, tamarack timber was used almost exclusively in the wines. It had the strength and lasting qualities necessary for a satisfactory mining timber. But about fifteen years ago the tamarack trees were attacked by a blight which killed nearly all of them so today no tamarack timber is available. Hemlock, spruce, and poplar have neither the necessary strength nor the lasting qualities for mining timber, but a large supply of maple and birch is available. These have ample strength but, when placed underground, fail by decay in about three years. This means that, instead of replacing the timber sets once in fifteen years, it must be done five or more times in the same space of time which involves not only incraesed timber costs but more important, an increased labor cost.

In this paper on the recovery of mercury as sulphide, from the residues from the amalgamation and cyanide treatment of high-grade ores and concentrates, I will not discuss the many reactions, chemical and other- wise, that take place in the general process, but confine myself more particularly to the methods of recovering the mercury. I submit charts of two amalgamation-barrel charges, Figs. 1 and 2, which are self-explanatory. The flow sheet of the high-grade and the mercury extraction plants is showh in Fig. 3.

The main difficulty in the determination of silicon in pig-irons containing very high percentages of that element, has been due to their almost complete insolubility in acids, or mixtures of acids. The object of the present paper, which presents no new principle, is to suggest a method of determination which has repeatedly given accurate results, and which obviates completely the tediousness and uncertainty of the usual slow solution in acids. This method has been tried with pig-irons containing from 7 to 14 per cent. of combined silicon, and properly called ferro-silicons. When reduced to an impalpable powder in the agate mortar, an 11 per cent. ferro-silicon was found to resist the action of all acids, or mixtures of acids, with the exception of sulphuric acid of about 1.25 specific gravity. But the action of this acid, even during long continued heating, was very slow, 72 hours being necessary to com pletely dissolve half a gramme of the metal. The complete decomposition of 1 gramme of the metal may, on the other hand, readily he effected in a few minutes by fusion with sodium carbonate in a covered platinum crucible over a blast-lamp —the idea being to dissolve the silicon, leaving the iron in condi tion to be readily attacked by acids. The silicon dissolves as soluble sodium silicate, and metallic iron remains in a very spongy and finely divided condition. The addition of a little hot water

At Buffington Station, Gary, Ind., Universal Atlas Cement operates fourteen 8 x 10Y2 x 155-ft cement kilns in mill 6 and two 11 x 360-ft kilns in the Harbor plant. The No. 11 and 12 kilns in mill 6 are equipped with Manitowac recuperator sections. This report describes studies in measuring exterior shell temperatures on several of these kilns and the development of a traveling radiation pyrometer with certain novel features.

Volumetric reservoir analysis is dependent upon a firm relationship between porosity, connate water, and net pay. Capillary presswe data on core samples interrelate these three factors. It is shown that other reservoir problems may be resolved: (I) whether water production is indigenous or extraneous to the oil producing interval, (2) an oil-water contact is being approached, and (3) whether the oil-water contact is remotely situated. INTRODUCTION Volumetric analysis of carbonate reservoirs challenges the ingenuity of the reservoir engineer due to an absence of data on the minimum oil-bearing and oil-producing pores of a given reservoir rock. Many studies with this as the ultimate objective are available on the physical characteristics and fluid-flow behaviors of the carbonate reservoir. Some of these publications are: Hassler, Brunner and Deahl's1 study of the role of capillarity in oil production; Jan Law's' and A. C. Bulnes3 statistical treatment of core analysis data; Chalkley's method4,5 or estimating specific surface areas and porosity; Walter Rose's9 report on porosity, reserves, and recovery; Archie's78 tex-tural classification of carbonate rocks; Stewart and Spurlock's9 large core analysis; Purcell'sl0 mercury injection method in studying capillary pressure phenomena; Stewart, Craig, and Morse's" model multiple-phase flow test in investigating the relative permeability effect; and Fatt's12 illumi-nating network model of porous me-dia. The present study shows that the static reservoir parameters of porosity, connate water, and net productive thickness may be interrelated by utilizing a statistical arrangement of mercury capillary pressure data in addition to routine core analysis. This report summarizes the techniques that are followed to obtain these relations which are applicable to carbonate and sandstone reservoirs that do not contain clays. Capillary pressure statistical studies may be extended to include clay-bearing rocks by utilizing water capillary pressure data. POROSITY It is necessary that the laboratory determine the porosity value that includes the pores that are filled with hydrocarbons and water in the reservoir. This is the reservoir's total porosity. When true total porosity values are not available, correlations between porosity and capillary pressure characteristics lose their significance since they cannot be related through oil-base mud core data to the porosity and connate water values found in reservoirs. Methods used to obtain reliable porosity data will not be discussed; however, care should be exercised in selecting samples for measurement. In homogeneously porous formations, small core plugs sampled frequently will furnish adequate information. Where heterogeneity, particularly vugginess, is present, large-core porosity data may be required; in such reservoirs a suite of capillary pressure samples may be selected from small plugs. CAPILLARY PRESSURE Capillary pressure data provide a method for relating two carbonate reservoir parameters, porosity and connate water saturation, which in turn permit delineation of productive rock types necessary for selecting the third parameter, productive thickness. IMAGINE a spinning sphere of hot matter about 8000 miles in diameter, rushing through space at a velocity measured in miles per second, and you have a rough idea of what our earth is supposed to have been like about two to four billion years ago. By applying all of the science known to man and, more especially, by determining the velocity of earthquake waves at different depths, making comparisons with meteorites, studying densities, compressibility of rocks and the nature of surface rocks, a fairly definite conception of the general constitution of the earth has been obtained.1 The earth is supposed to have a central core rich in iron containing a substantial amount of nickel and small percentages of several other elements. The density of the core is assumed to be about ten times that of water and the diameter about 4200 miles. An intermediate shell of density about 4, and thickness of about 1800 miles, is sup- posed to consist of heavy rocks including sulfides, oxides, and silicates. The outer rock shell, probably about 100 miles thick and with a density around 2.8, is thought to be composed mostly of silicates, becoming in general more siliceous as the earth's surface is approached. NATURE'S SMELTING OPERATION Nature seems to have subjected the earth to a stupendous smelting operation, burying beyond reach much of the metal that man recovers in his smelting practices. THE Premium Price Plan for copper, lead, and represent, the approach of the Office of Price Administration to the urgent of wartime problem of securing increased output of nonferrous metals. Some of the problems encountered in too operation of the Plan and the considerations which led to it?s adopt it will here he reviewed. The Plan provides for extra payment by the Metals Reserve Co., to mine operators who exceed established quotas of production. Producers are thus directly, compensated for the higher costs of working ores that are not commercial at the ceiling price, although the metal obtained from these ores is directed into regular channels of distribution at the established prices for copper, lead, and zinc. Higher-cost metal is thus available to fabricators and to the government agencies at the regular ceiling price and the dual objective of increased production and table pries is achieved.

In this paper I desire to embody the results of some personal observations of the working of the Siemens direct process as I witnessed it for a part of three days at the works of the Siemens-Anderson Company, in Pittsburgh. This preliminary investigation was to have been followed up by one extending over a considerable period of time, and would have embraced analytical and physical tests. Circumstances over which I had no control, resulting in the temporay suspension of work, have postponed the presentation of a complete paper. If the opportunity is afforded me, I purpose doing this at a future meeting of the Institute. To those interested in the development of the process, reference is made to the papers of Dr. Siemens in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for the years 1873 and 1877, and to the paper of our late lamented brother, Holley, in the 8th volume of the Transactions of our owu Institute. Dr. Siemens, in the introduction to his paper "On the Manufacture of Iron and Steel by Direct Process," read before the Iron and Steel Institute in september, 1877, says: " In mixing comparatively rich iron ore in powder with about 25 per cent. of its weight of pounded coal, and in exposing this mixture for some hours to the heat of a common stove or of a smith's fire, metallic iron is formed, which, on being heated to the welding-point on the same smith's hearth, may be forged into a horseshoe of excellent quality. The admixture with the ore of some fluxiug materials, such as lime or clay, will, in most cases, be of advantage to rid the iron of adherent slog." This is the keynote of the Siemens direct process. Dr. Siemens says further: " If we regard the production of wrought iron from an abstract point of view, we perceive that we have to accomplish two things, viz., the deoxidation of the ore, arid the fusion of the earthy matter mixed with it; and if we calculate the amount of carbon necessary to accomplish this end, weshall rind that in using, say, hematite ore, consisting of peroxide of iron with from 10 to 15 per cent. of silica, we shall require barely 40 per cent. of carbonsceous matter per ton of iron contained in the ore to effect its reduction, and also the fusion of the slag."

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to a new form of drawing-board trestle. With the ordinary four-legged trestle, commonly used, one has not the means of adjusting the height of the board to the draughtsman. To obviate this inconvenience, and at the same time to enable one to incline the board, I have devised an arrangement of curved and straight slots and thumb-screws, by means of which the board can be raised three or more inches, and placed at any desired angle of inclination on either side. Figures 2, 3 (Plate I) show side and end elevations of the trestle for a single board, and Figure 4 for two boards. The latter form is adapted for use in schools, or where it is desired to economize space.

Edward Eeller, Baltimore, Md. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Miller's improved method of the cyanide-assay for copper will, without doubt, be much appreciated by assayers and chemists who are engaged at copper mines and works. The writer, as one who, at one time, had much work of that kind to do, entertains no doubt of its practical value. In enumerating the factors which affect the accuracy of cyanide-titration, Mr. Miller omits to mention time. This I have always considered an essential one; i.e., in order to secure accuracy, I have believed it to be necessary to run the cyanidesolution at the same rate of speed in standardizing as in the titration of the samples. I have accomplished this, without the use of a time-keeper and without noticing the volume of the solution, in the following simple manner: In running the cyanide-solution from the burette, the stream was so regulated, by manipulation of the cock, that it retained its continuity for a distance of about one inch below the orifice, and, below that, broke into individual drops. This means that a constant pressure is maintained at the orifice of the burette, so that, during equal intervals of time, equal volumes of the solution pass through. The stream of cyanide-solution was left to flow in the manner indicated until the blue ammoniacal copper-solution began to show a distinct change in color, after which the cyanide was added by drops at regular intervals until the desired end-reaction. When several burettes are used they should have orifices of equal diameter; otherwise, the timefactor must be considered separately for each. In accordance with Mr. Miller's views, I have always considered the cyanide-method as of very satisfactory accuracy for all copper-assaying in which I did not employ the electrolytic method. THIS subject is one that has attracted my attention for a good many years. All of us have had occa-sion to think of the waste that comes from the poor organization of our methods of finding mines and of looking after prospects. Probably all of us, in, examination work, have made a long and difficult journey to see some prospect, in a far country, or often in the mountains, have found the prospect one that never could be developed, and have learned for the first time that it had been previously examined by from two to six of our professional associates, who, each in turn, condemned the property as worthless. I know properties, as all of you do, that have been repeatedly examined by first-class engineers. Perhaps it would not be safe or wise to have an invariable rule that, each prospect should be entitled to only one examination by one engineer; and yet, it seems to me that somewhere there is a middle ground to take; it is hardly necessary that each little prospect should be examined so many times that the walls get greasy from the climbing of mining engineers, or the stopes get filled up with cigarette stumps. 'This mining engineering profession ought to have brains enough to find some way of making this unnecessary, and of making the benefit of an examination, in some cases at least, and in a much larger number of cases than at present, avail-able to the industry as a whole. If we would save the amount of money that is spent unnecessarily on reexamination of properties, and let that money flow into the actual development of )properties, I believe that, in the long run, we would be better off. Just how to do that is another problem. In 1916, while in London, Edgar Rickard and I attempted to do something of that kind. We started to organize a plan whereby mining engineers might, with the consent of their class, turn over to a central organization their reports on properties they had examined, whereby men who had occasion to look up these same properties might, on payment of a fee (which should go back to the original client, if you desire, or might be devoted to some other purpose for the benefit of the industry), have access to these earlier reports. We found, in the short time we considered this matter, that a good many British engineers, and a good many of the companies, were willing to consider this. In other words, they were willing to pool their information, as a matter of practical experience. We all know the enormous value of pooling information. I think it is a problem that may well be considered from the point of view of the industry as a whole, which the Society might attempt' to work out on a businesslike basis. Assuming, however, that it is possible to work out a plan whereby we get the minimum number of examina-tions that are necessary and we make some saving in money, we reach another stage-the problem of the examination itself.

record with the Royal Flying Corps was considered a remarkable one, for he was at the front within two months of the date on which he was granted a commission, during which interval he took the prescribed technical course at Oxford, and aviation training at Netheravon and Bristol. On Sept. 14, 1916, he took his first flight over the German lines, when his engine stalled and he had to volplane down, fortunately landing on the French side of the lines. On Sept. 16, he went over the lines with six others, and not returning immediately with the others, was lost. He tried to make for the sea and come back following the course of a river, but when he did descend he found that he was 60 miles west of Paris and 100 miles south of his lines. He flew over to Paris and stayed there for the night, going back to his squadron the next morning. Then on Oct. 4, he was sent up at night for the first time, and in making a landing he passed the flares just as he struck the ground, which put him in total darkness. He struck something and his machine turned a complete somersault, which accident put him in the hospital for ten days. In December, 1916, he left the 21st Squadron and was transferred to the 24th, as the 21st was made an Artillery Squadron and he preferred to remain a fighting scout. In the same month, he was made Acting Flight Commander for about 6 weeks, and about April 3, 1917, his rank of Flight Commander was confirmed. The beginning of May he started to introduce a number of new machines for his squadron, these being of an entirely new type. On May 19, he was up with one of the machines in the evening, practising sharp turns and dives, when the wings suddenly crumpled up and he fell 700 ft., being killed instantly. He was buried in a French Cemetry at Monchy Lagache about 8 miles southeast of Perronne, and about 25 miles east of Amiens. Sergeant Herbert Moore Harbach Herbert Moore Harbach was born in Lebanon, Pa., Apr. 4, 1891, graduated from the Lebanon High School in 1911, and entered State College from which he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1915. He was employed by the Lackawanna Iron Co., at Buffalo, W. Y., and was later transferred to their Lebanon plant to start up the newly erected benzol plant. He was later made foreman of the coke ovens, which position he held after it was bought by the Bethlehem Steel Co., and until he enlisted in the service of his country in September, 1917. He was stationed at Camp Meade, Md., until the spring of 1918, when he was transferred to the C. W.

CANBY, Wallingford, Conn.-On page 2, the author speaks of the importance of using a testing sieve clothed with the same material as the screen being studied; does he regard this as essential? In practice, how does the screen efficiency calculated by the difficult-grain method compare with those computed by the usual undersize method? Is it possible by the author's method, to obtain a measure of efficiency that can safely be compared with that of another screen sizing a different ore? ROBERT K. WARNER.-The use of a testing sieve clothed like the mill screen being studied is desirable but not essential for routine work about a mill where the character of the feed varies little, as regards the shape of the grains and the sizing test. Close agreement in size of aperture between the sieve and the screen is, however, important if the data obtained are to be valuable to others working on a different feed. If the testing sieve is coarser than the mill screen, the efficiency will appear unfairly low; whereas if it is too fine one might get efficiencies greater than 100 per cent. because of the apparent oversize in the undersize. In either of these cases the usefulness of the difficult-grain method of calculation would be reduced. As screens wear, the undersize grows appreciably coarser so that it is desirable to test screens only when the cloth is new or else to provide testing sieves that are worn about the same amount. The futility of making efficiency observations on a. distorted or broken screen surface is obvious.

The following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 61 of the 102 counties of the State, There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft. (306 m.). The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. While engaged in experimenting with the usual methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, it occurred to me that potassium chlorate might be used to oxidize the carbon, and thus avoid the tedious and vexatious evaporations necessary for successfully carrying out the usual methods. After many trials, the following plan was adopted : Take, for analysis, of Bessemer or other low-carbon steels, from 3 to 5 grammes; of crucible steel, 10 grammes; of pig-iron, 1 to 5 grammes, according to the percentage of phosphorus supposed to be present. Of iron, high in phosphorus (1 per cent.), take 1 gramme. Place in a No. 4 evaporating dish the amount of iron or steel decided upon, cover with a funnel which will just fit inside the dish, and then add gradually HNO3, (1.20 specific gravity), using 12 C.C. of acid for each gramme of steel or iron taken. (A larger quantity of acid will be required for small samples.) When the full amount of acid has been added, and the violent action has ceased, place the evaporating dish on a sand-bath, add 10 C.C. HNO3, (1.40 specific gravity), and boil till the bulk of the solution is reduced about onehalf. Then add 10 C.C. HNO3, (1.40 specific gravity), continue the boiling, and add from time to time, during the next 15 minutes, small portions of pulverized KCIO3, till about 2 grammes have been added. (If the solution shows signs of going dry, more strong acid must be added.) This will precipitate the manganese, with some iron. Sometimes it happens that the manganese does not come down readily, and more KCIO3, or further concentration, or both, will be required. The process is not complete till the manganese is precipitated, which may be known by the appearance of a dark, mirror-like deposit on the dish, at the edge of the solution. Boil the solution 5 minutes after the last addition of KCIO3, and then add cautiously (to prevent sudden explosions) 5 C.C. strong HCl. This will dissolve the precipitated manganese and iron.
