C ONDITIONS have not been favorable for new developments in any line. It has been a period, how- ever in which recent developments have been subjected to the severest tests. Those which have been able to hold their own in the severe competition of 1932 must be considered fully proved commercial processes. The continuous vertical-muffle retort plant at Palmer- ton is reported to have been in operation at practically full capacity throughout the year. The high quality of metal produced and the low operating costs are factors which have kept this plant running when many of the older furnaces were shut down. The plant at Meadow- brook, W. Va., is also reported to have been in steady operation throughout the year. Average retort life is said to be better than two years with about three-quarters of the original retorts still in operation after 2 ½ years.

The surface structure and substructure of Al-Cu alloys solidified as conventional ingots and under particular conditions such as those used by Bower and Flemings are studied. The influence of lampblack coating on the mold walls is especially considered and the results compared with those obtained in copper and graphite molds where no coatings exist. When high heat extraction conditions exist the observations show that mechanism of copious nucleation is responsible for most of the chill zone. When the heat extraction through the mold walls is low, a coarse grain structure with dendritic morphology arises, with a size that depends on the degree of convection present, analogous to that analyzed by Bower and Flemings. In both cases the effect of the convection on the macroscopic and microscopic appearance is discussed. The ingot macrostructure consists of one or more of three zones: "chill zone", "columnar zone", and central "equiaxed zone". The mechanism of the columnar-equiaxed transition has been subject of considerable interest and at present at least three theories exist about the formation of the equiaxed region: 1) the constitutional supercooling theory1 maintains that the equiaxed crystals nucleate after the columnar zone has formed, as a result of the constitutional supercooling of the remaining liquid; 2) chalmers2 pointed out, however, that there were several objections to this proposal, and that consideration should be given to the possibility that all the crystals, equiaxed as well as columnar, originated during the initial chilling of the liquid layer in contact with the mold; 3) Jackson et aL3 and O'Hara and ~iller~ suggested that a remelting mechanism of the dendrite arms is responsible for the formation of the equiaxed region. After the work of Cole and Bolling and other authors6 it became evident that convection (natural, reduced, or forced) plays a very important role in the transition from columnar to equiaxed and on the size of the resultant equiaxed structure. Until recently the accepted explanation of the chill zone was that it occurs as a result of copious nucleation in the liquid layer in contact with the mold walls.798 The columnar region is a subsequent result of the growth of favorably oriented grains and, as a result of a selection mechanism studied by Walton and Chalmers,9 elongated grains with marked texture are formed. Recently, however, Bower and Flemings" using an ingenious laboratory experiment introduced the idea that the "copious nucleation" mechanism is not responsible for the formation of the chill zone and that the presence of convection, introducing some form of "crystal multiplication", plays a decisive role in the formation of the chill zone. Unfortunately, it is important to consider that for their conclusions Bower and Flemings extrapolated the results obtained in their special experiments to the case of conventional ingots, and that these authors only analyzed the macrostructures of the specimens. Let us consider the work by Biloni and chalmers" concerning predendritic solidification. These authors were able to show that a study of the segregation substructure of A1-Cu gives information about the nucleation and growth of crystals formed in contact with a cold surface. A spherical predendritic region characterizes the first part of every grain nucleated in contact with the surface as a result of the chill effect. The aim of this paper is to elucidate through the observation of the segregation substructure the conditions under which (in the Bower and Flemings type of experiments and in conventional ingots) either the nucleation or the multiplication mechanism gives rise to the structure in contact with the mold walls. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The experiments were performed on two alloys: Al-1 wt pct Cu and A1-5 wt pct Cu. The purity of the aluminum was 99.99 pct and the copper 99.999 pct. The results obtained with both alloys were similar. In the Bower and Flemings type of experiments the apparatus employed to obtain rapid solidification against a surface was similar to that used by those authors. The liquid was drawn by partial vacuum into the thin section mold cavity. Plate casts were 5 cm wide and usually 7.5 cm high. The thicknesses of the cast were 0.1 and 0.3 cm. Two different materials were used for the mold, copper and nuclear-grade graphite. The internal mold surfaces were polished and left uncoated for some experiments. In other experiments, the copper or graphite surface was coated with a thin film of lampblack material. In some of these particular experiments one of the mold walls was left with an uncoated region (usually in the form of a cross). The conventional ingots were cast in graphite or copper molds. In different experiments the mold walls were sometimes uncoated or coated with lampblack material. The results obtained in conventional and Bower and Flemings copper molds were compared with those obtained with copper molds coated with a very thin film of graphite; the results obtained were essentially similar. The size of the conventional ingots was 5 cm diam and 7 cm high in all cases. The cast surfaces produced by the Bower and Flemings type of experiments and conventional methods were observed macroscopically and microscopically without any metallographic preparation. As Biloni and Chalmers showed," the observation of the chill surface can give considerable information about the structure and segregation substructure.

FINLAND'S recent mining history is both dramatic and pitiful in its shifting fortunes, dominated as it has been, by the country's proximity to the border zone of opposing dictatorships and social traditions; Fascism to the south, Communism to the east, and Democracy to the west. After 108 years under Russia's more or less harsh rule, Finland gained its democratic independence during the 1917 revolutionary strife in Russia with the official help of Germany and spontaneous help of other neighbors. The young nation was attacked by Russia in 1939 and again in 1941. It is common knowledge how the Finns fought with everything they had and everything they could get against their overwhelming adversary, and how by force of circumstances they landed in the Axis camp in 1941. Finland has never been known as a mining country in the same way as near-by Sweden, whose abundant iron and copper smelters during long periods so greatly contributed to the nation's welfare. Its largely barren, Archaean-granite geology long seemed forbidding. Some mining was done, to be sure; copper and tin at Pitkaranta near the Russian border, and lead and copper at Orijarvi. But towards the end of the last century the absence of a single producing mine cast a pessimistic shadow of truth over the Finnish poet Runeberg's words, that

THE 129th meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers convened at New York City, in the Engineering Societies Building, Feb. 18-20, 1924. On February 21 an excursion was made to the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Bethlehem, where about 200 members and guests were splendidly entertained. An illustrated description of the Bethlehem Plant will be published next month. The meeting and excursion were largely attended; the registration at New York totalled 1276 versus 1201 in 1923. William Kelly, long identified with the iron-mining industry of the Lake Superior district, was elected President of the A. I. M. E. for the coming year, at ,the annual business meeting, Feb. 19, succeeding E. P. Mathewson. The following Directors were also elected (the date signifies year of termination of office; the final figure indicates the "District" the Director represents).

The discovery of eight new oil fields, two of which may be of major importance, was the outstanding record in Michigan this year. These new fields have helped to support the declining production from old areas and place the total of 18,559,000 bbl. in line with the past six or seven years. Thus, it appears that Michigan is doing its part in maintaining the production of the country in the third year of the war. The new fields are in the central basin area where oil was first discovered in Michigan, thus tending to focus attention on the deeper part of the lower peninsula of the state. Through 1944 the state of Michigan has produced a total of 222,-641,580 bbl. of crude oil from 100 pools, many of which arc relatively small. Among the previous1y discovered fields Reed City is still the outstanding producer, with Fork, Headquarters, and Adams following in the order named. The Reed City pool produced a little over 5,000,00 bbl., which was more than one third of the state's total for the year. Almost two thirds of the year's total oil production came from fields discovered in the past five years. Maps A map of the oil and gas fields of Michigan in 1943, published in the A.I.M.E. report for 1944,* shows the main producing areas and should be referred to if information in regard to their location is desired. The producing zones are shown in the columnar section in the same publi- cation." The data in Tables I and 2 have been carefully ' checked and every effort has been made to show as complcte information as possible. New Discoveries and New Developments Eight new producing areas were discovered during 1944 which, in order of importance, are: Deep River Field.—The discovery well in the Deep River field was drilled by Don Rayburn and others, and should be listed as a chance discovery, as, from a geological standpoint, it was not considered favorable until oil was found at a depth of 2838 ft. in a dolomitic layer in the top of the Dundee limestone. The first well was completed in January 1944, with an initial production of 2500 bbl. By the end of the year 15 wells had been completed, proying an area 2 1/2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Coldttater Field.-The Coldwater field was discovered in August 1944, by the Sohio Oil Co. Production is from secondary dolomite at the top of the Dundee at a depth of 3703 ft. To the end of 1944 nine wells had been drilled on 40-acre spacing. Essexville Field.—Essexville field was discovered by United Drillers and Producers, Inc. Eight wells had been completed to the Dundee lime by the end of 1944, and prospects were good for further development during 1945. Hilliards Field.—Hilliards field was discovered by Cook and Fortney. Production is from the Traverse lime at an average depth of 1588 feet,

THE motive for merging or consolidation today is conspicuously different from that actuating business men in the late eighties and early nine- ties. Then they combined to secure added productive capacity and to monopolize their respective industries with a view to exploiting the consumer. So flagrant were some of these cases that they brought about their own correctives via retaliation on the part of the public and the subsequent restrictive legislation and legal curbs. The objective of the present-day merger, writes W. R. Hill in Printers' Ink, December, 1927, is summarized as follows : "In the golden days when an industry was being cut to pieces, the prevailing cure was to combine. The reason for such trusts was to strangle competition and by creating a monopoly, dominate the market, raise prices, regardless of economic business methods, and simply force larger profits.

The active development of the vast East Texas oil field, the attendant effects of the rapidly increasing flow from its prolific wells and the efforts to bring order out of chaos precluded or dwarfed other oil development in Texas during 1931. In a paper by Dr. F. H. Lahee1 presented at the October, 1931, meeting, the early history of the East Texas oil field is described and the sequence of events in connection with its development and efforts to control its production up to Sept. 25 is narrated. At that time the Railroad Commission of the state reduced the production of the field to a maximum of 400,000 bbl. per day by restricting the allowable daily production per well to 185 bbl. By further reduction in the daily production per well to 100 bbl., the field was held below that maximum figure during the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, as a result of an injunction against the Railroad Commission, its authority in the field was superseded on Oct. 13 by the Governor of the state, and after that date production was controlled directly by his orders issued under authority of martial law. Suits to contest this authority were brought in the Federal courts and were pending at the close of the year. On March 5, 1931, as a result of the East Texas production, posted prices for Mid-Continent 40' A.P.I. crude slumped from $1.07 to $0.67. As East Texas production continued to mount, posted prices in East Texas were reduced to $0.37 on June 3 and $0.22 on July 8, although in that field most of the oil was sold for much less, bringing the producer and royalty owner as low as $0.025 per barrel. Northeast Texas To the information contained in Dr. Lahee's paper, it can now be added that the East Texas field has produced over 105,000,000 bbl. and registered about 3700 successful completions during 1931. There may be some merit to the recent prediction that a large part of the field will have passed its flowing period by the middle of 1932 unless

The Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting as a part of this report the second of a series of maintenance cost comparisons. The committee's purpose is to assemble maintenance costs on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mining and to arrange these costs by districts so that comparisons can be made between districts and within districts. The committee, this year, sent 35 questionnaires to representative coal companies who either reported last year or had advised specifically of the inability to report to last year's questionnaire primarily because of limited time. The response to the questionnaire this year as not as good as last year, only 20 of the 35 selected companies returning a completed questionnaire. This year's data have been compiled and combined with last year's data to present a comparison of the 1945 and 1946 costs of loading machines, shortwall cutting machines, universal cutting machines, service locomotives, shuttle cars, and mine cars. The same tabulation by districts is used as was used for 1945. As was indicated by last year's report there is considerable variation in the in cost of mining machinery in the various coal mining districts and due to this high variability it was not felt practical to attempt to arrive at weighted averages. Consequently, all average figures used in this report are straight averages. An analysis was made of companies reporting both this year and last year in an attempt to determine the trend in maintenance costs for different classes of equipment. Ten representative companies are used in this computation. Table I shows the average cost for 1945 and 1946. It is felt that the negative trend in the maintenance cost of universal cutting machines probably represents the effect of the purchase of a relatively large number of new machines in 1946 with little maintenance cost appearing during the first Year of operation. The grand total figure indicates an upward trend amounting to plus 18.7 pet. However, this figure is viewed with some suspicion because of the effect of the universal cutters decreasing maintenance cost and it is concluded that direct application of percentage increase should be made to types of equipment. The natural gas industry is essentially a byproduct of the oil industry. When first discovered the gas was usually regarded as a nuisance, and even when found immediately associated with oil, or suspected to be so, it was customary to blow it freely into the air, in the hope that gas would shortly be replaced by a flow of oil. The early methods of production,' transportation, and utilization were neither economical nor efficient; the chief value of gas was based on its use as a fuel, with no regard to (1) its effect. upon the oil with which it was associated, (2) its importance as a lifting agent, or (3) to its possibilities for the manufacture of byproducts. The spread of scientific research among major gas and oil companies, manufacturers, and academic groups, has gradually brought recognition of the fact that many of the technical problems bearing on production, transportation and utilization are common to both the gas and the oil industry. A few of the problems that have received serious study, and from which highly gratifying results have been obtained, are: (1) gas measurement, (2) oil well and gas well capacity tests, (3) elimination of field waste, (4) design of pipe lines and compressor stations, (5) extraction of constituents which might interfere with the normal flow of gas through the line, (6) control of reservoir pressure, (7) estimation of reserves of both oil and gas, (8) control of water encroachment, (9) measurement of factors which influence fluid movement through sands, (10) solubility of gases in oils, (11) effect of dissolved gases upon the properties of the solution. These investigations have demonstrated that almost every problem relating to oil production also involves some phase of natural gas engineering. During the past 15 years the use of experimental methods for the discovery and measurement of obscure, influencing factors, which cannot be determined purely by hydrodynamic or thermodynamic analyses, have contributed much towards the progress made in solving the problems of the oil and gas industries. THE McGill smelter started operations in the year 1907. The smelter furnaces were fired with run-of-mine coal on grates until April 1911, when oil firing was introduced. Oil firing continued until April 1918, when the initial coal-pulverizing plant was started.1 EARLY PULVERIZING PLANT Various alterations were made to that plant during its operation, one of the more important being in connection with the system for delivering pulverized coal. In order to minimize coal-dust explosions and fires, the return portion of the main delivery line was eliminated in the year 1928. Thereafter coal-dust explosions and fires were greatly reduced. Pulverized coal was prepared at this plant primarily for the reverberatory furnaces, but for several years it was also delivered to the converting plant, roasters and power-plant boilers by a system of auxiliary fans and delivery lines. During the period March 29 to April 8, 1929, one reverberatory furnace was fired with pulverized coal produced by an Aero, type J, unit coal pulverizer with a rated capacity of 5 tons per hour. This machine actually pulverized its rated capacity but the product was too coarse. After certain regulations, a finer product was obtained but the pulverizer capacity decreased and this resulted in insufficient coal for efficient furnace operation. Table I gives a comparison of the average screen analyses of the pulverized-coal products from the impact-type unit pulverizer and the regular coal-plant installation. [ ] It was definitely proved that this size and type of unit pulverizer could not furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness to give smelting results comparable to that obtained with the regular coal-pulverizing plant. The coal from this unit pulverizer was so coarse that it did not ignite or burn properly and thus did not produce the proper heat for efficient smelting. During the latter part of 1929 and the early part of 1930, experimental work was conducted with a 7-ft. 0-in. by 48-in. Hardinge conical ball-mill coal-grinding unit, which was installed alongside a furnace in the reverberatory building. Results obtained from the test run indicated that this unit would furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness for good smelting.

Ware B. Gay, Richmond, Va.: Having followed the remarks of Prof. Woodworth with great interest, especially his suggestions for drilling in the part of the coal-field on the south side of the James river, I would like to inquire of him if he reached his conclusions after fully considering the situation as existing upon the north side of the James ? My reason for this inquiry is, that upon the north side the eastern and western outcrops are much nearer each other than appears to me to be the case upon the south side, and also that the western outcrop on the north side is much more clearly defined than upon the south side. It is now about twelve years since I first became interested in the Richmond coal-field—and until about six years ago I passed much time in investigation and spent thousands of dollars in developments. About six years ago the properties in which I was more especially interested were leased to other parties, and since that time I have had little or nothing to do with the mining operations. I regret to say the price of coals has ruled so low during most of the time since the lease was made that the developments have not been as extensive as the lessees had originally intended. The result of my investigations after considering all the theories, expert reports, legends and other information I could obtain bearing upon the subject, was the opinion, which I still hold, that the most practicable and most economical way for proving the extent and value of the field is by sinking slopes from the eastern outcrop, and by prosecuting such slopes in the vein and following the coal to the western outcrop, thus obtaining an actual cross-section in fact and not in theory. Proceeding upon this hypothesis, I sought for the positions where this could probably be accomplished most quickly and develop a marketable coal-area as the work thus progressed. Significant improvements have been made in the ursine systern for epitaxial vapor gvowtlz of Gds. The electron concentration has been reduced to below 1015 cm-3 with electron-mobility values as high as 7200 sq on per v-sec at 30PK and 60,000 sq cw7 per v-sec at 77°K. These high-purity layers have been successfully gvown on n&apos; layers with thicknesses as snzall as 1 p and as large as 125 p. Furthermore, high-purity layers have been incorporated into an structure without degradation of electrical properties. Different impurity gradients at the n&apos; to n interface were achieved. Using these structures, Gunn oscillators have been operated at frequencies as low as 0.4 GHz and as high as 40 GHz, which equals the highest valzle yet reported. The frequencies nleasured are in reasonable apeenlent with those calculated fron7 the n-layer widths and the transit times. CW operatiolz has been achieved from 3 to 20 GHz. In Gunn devices for >40 GHz operation (i.e., witk an n-layer tkickness below 2.5p), the n layer has been generally too pure to permit oscillations to occuv. ThE mechanism of the Gunn oscillator&apos; is now generally understood.2-5 Electron transfer from the (000) minimum to the ( 100) minima leads to a voltage-controlled negative resistance, which results in the formation of domains of high and low electric fields which travel through the crystal with a characteristic velocity of about 107 cm per sec. When a constant voltage is applied to the sample, this domain motion generaliy leads to oscillations at the transit time frequency, fT = 107/L, where L is the thickness of the active n layer.&apos; In this case, a single high-field domain is nucleated at the cathode and grows until it reaches the anode, where it is absorbed; a new domain then forms at the cathode.5 There are related modes of oscillation of the same device in which a tuned circuit causes a periodic variation of the voltage across the device. The frequency then may be either above or below fT. It has been shown that oscillations will occur when n • L 2 1012 cm"2, where n is the carrier concentration in the active region. At lower doping densities, 10" 5 n . L 5 lo&apos;&apos;, the doping is said to be subcritical for oscillation and the description of the device operation changes since the domains become comparable in thickness to the device thickness, L. Nevertheless, such devices have been found to be "active" and, in fact, are useful as amplifiers.778 For CW operation, one wishes to minimize the power dissipation, which is related to the electric field, E, and the low-field resistivity, p. Below threshold, the power dissipation density is approximately Typically, at threshold where E -- 3 x 103 v per cm, the dissipation density is 107/p watts per cu cm, p in ohm-cm. Furthermore, it is desirable to provide good conduction of the heat generated in the active region. The temperature rise, AT, across the active layer of a sandwich structure, with a heat sink on one side, is given by AT = (E&apos;/P)(L~/~~) where it is assumed that the thermal conductivity, u, and resistivity, p, of GaAs do not vary appreciably over the range of temperature and electric fields existing in the layer. This expression shows that, subject to maintaining an appropriate (n . L) product, CW operation is favored by a higher resistivity, a lower threshold field, and a thinner device. The above device requirements place some severe restrictions on the materials to be used, especially for high-frequency (>10 GHz) operation. Here, it is necessary to prepare very thin (<10 µ) layers of GaAs, in a state of high purity (-1 ohm-cm), complete with very low-resistance ohmic contacts. Problems of handling such thin and fragile samples become inereasingly severe as the frequency is raised. Furthermore, while good low-resistance ohmic contacts are easily applied to low-resistivity GaAs, contacting difficulties are encountered for these higher-resistivity materials.

The almost universal acceptance of electrical logging by the petroleum industry calls for a critical examination of the physical bases of the common methods. This is particularly needed for the natural potential log. The conventional explanations are based on the phenomena of electrofiltration and electro-osmosis. However, experimental data show that they fail to give a basis that is quantitatively sound. Moreover, they lead to interpretations of details of electrical logs that are erroneous. It was found experimentally that when a plug of shale is placed in a chain of dissimilar electrolytes, a current flow results. Experiments on oil-well cores and fluids similar to those existing in wells show that potentials are set up which are in reasonable agreement with those encountered in electrical logging. Doubtless other sources of potential are important but this explanation not only accounts for much of the potential but also clarifies some fairly familiar examples of misinterpretations. Introduction The extraordinary value of electrical well logging as a tool for petroleum engineers and geologists is now so uni- versally recognized that it is not necessary to point out the ways in which it can be useful. It is sufficient to mention only the saving that has resulted from the elimination of much coring that would have been necessary under former practices and the considerable additions to reserves resulting from the discovery of sands missed in coring. Paradoxically, the very remarkable success that has resulted from the application of electrical logging to correlation and completion problems has cost some of its most consistent users dearly.&apos; The fact that some operators have placed unwarranted faith in erroneous interpretations of electrical logs does not reduce the value of the logs. It should, however, make one pause long enough to ask why experienced users should be misled. The answer to this question is not hard to find. In nearly every case, the fault has been oversimplification. This is illustrated very aptly by the familiar interpretation and theory of the natural potential log. Recording and Interpreting Logs The natural potential log is extremely simple to record precisely enough for all present-day uses. One needs only an electrode, a cable to lower the electrode through the drilling mud, a recording meter and a surface ground connection. The electrode can be elaborate but need not be. A simple brass rod 2 in, in diameter and 2 or 3 in. long is quite satisfactory. The cable need not be particularly well insulated, nor need it have a very low resistance. I deeply appreciate the honor of being selected to deliver the twentieth Annual Lecture of the Institute of Metals Division. The subject of my paper is extremely involved and voluminous, therefore I shall discuss only some more recent experimental material and speculate somewhat on the physical and mechanical fundamentals of these changes. The flow and the rupture of a solid material are rather different phenomena. It is therefore surprising that up to a rather advanced stage in metallurgical science these two fundamental phenomena have been simultaneously treated and forced into the general conception of the "failure" of solid material. Only in this century, and particularly during the last 20 years, have the very different physical meanings of flow and rupture been clearly recognized. Several hundred of the more recent publications deal with these subjects.1 LAW OF SIMILARITY The basic values commonly considered responsible for the mechanical behavior of any material are the stresses. From this standpoint both a large and a small article made from the same homogeneous metal and of geometrically similar shapes should behave identically, i.e., they should deform geometrically in a similar manner, if subjected to the same stress values at corresponding points. This "law of similarity" was introduced about 60 years ago simultaneously by Barba2 and Kick3 and was derived from the classical theory of elasticity. As far as the plastic behavior of a metal is concerned, this rule appears to be valid. The conventional properties of large and small tension or compression test bars, machined from larger sections, are identical; while the force required to deform a section is proportional to its cross-sectional area and the work consumed in deforming geometrically similar articles in a geometrically similar manner is proportional to its volume. The general trend of the stress-strain diagram of a metal is independent of the section size (Fig. I). No exceptions from this rule are known. However, if the deformation of a metal is continued until rupture occurs, and the breaking stress or the work consumed is measured, a test bar of large cross section appears to fail before or at lower stresses than does one having a small cross section. Thus, the specific impact energy has been often found to decrease with increasing size of the test specimen, particularly for materials with a limited ductility.4 Another exception from the rule of similarity is offered by fatigue-strength values, which usually decrease with increasing section size. 5,6 The conclusion must be drawn from these experimental facts that the ductility of a homogeneous metal decreases with increas¬ing section size (Fig. x). This effect has been actually confirmed by Docherty,7 who observed that in static notch bending tests large specimens failed earlier and in a more brittle fashion than small specimens ma-

THE prospector&apos;s pan was the first implement used for saving gold, and its action is so effective that it has never been equalled for thorough work. Copper plates, blankets, sluices, and amalgamators of several patented designs have thrust it aside, but in spite of all the advances made there is no dispute among experienced men as to the comparative thoroughness of the work done by it and its rivals. When its rivals are doing their best, the pan can take their discarded refuse and prove their inefficiency by producing from it not only gold, but even the mercury which has been lost from the machines themselves. The trouble with the pan has always been that it was only a tool. Man was the machine that moved it. His work was high-priced, the quantity treated small, and it was impossible to use the pan for any but the richest sands. As a consequence the best gold-saving appliance known has been discarded for years and replaced by machines of inferior excellence, but which could more than make up for their limited ability in saving gold by their capacity for treating great quantities of ore. Mr. Peck is one of the old-time amalgamators of the Comstock district, and the first idea of the new machine came to him as he used to pan below the tailrace of his mill. No matter how fine the work of the mill was, the pan invariably proved that better could be done. The tailings always contained gold, silver, and mercury. This state of things is just as true to-day, after all the improvements that have been made, as it was then, and the much-vaunted method of the " Washoe process" consists in extracting 72 per cent. of the gold and silver by one operation, and then repeating this operation half a dozen times to get out about one-third of the remainder. With all the advances of twenty years in milling, there is nothing more crude in metallurgy than the treatment of tailings in many of the large mills of the West.
