ELECTROLYTIC zinc plants of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are located adjacent to the present city limits of Corpus Christi, Texas. The original plant commenced operations during 1942, and is designed for the production of special high grade zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates.' Subsequent changes include the erection of an additional acid plant during 1950, and additions for increased generating and production capacity during 1951. New Electrolytic Plant—The new electrolytic plant is a separate unit erected for the treatment of densified fume produced at Asarco plants located in El Paso, Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico. Construction was completed and operation commenced during June, 1953. Decision for the erection of a separate plant for the treatment of densified fume is based on several factors. One of the principal reasons is the assurance of continued production rate of the original plant, which might have been jeopardized by combined treatment of calcine and fume. Of equal importance is the advantage of locating a plant on a site with adequate space for eventual expansion. General Description—The new plant for the treatment of densified fume consists of four main buildings for the following operations: storage and grinding of fume, leaching and purification, electrolyzing and casting, and rectifier units. Auxiliary buildings include a baghouse, reagent storage, and a lunch room. Leaching of ground fume with electrolyte from the cells is a batch type operation in tanks equipped with mechanical agitators and weightometers. Completed leaches are pressure filtered, the resultant residue being recovered for shipment to El Paso by conventional use of thickeners, drum type vacuum filters, and a direct-fired dryer. Filtrates from the filter section are purified in mechanically agitated tanks, filtered after completion through plate and frame presses, and then pumped to an evaporative type cooling tower. Solution discharged from the basin of the cooling tower is collected in storage tanks for use in the cells. The cool purified solutions are pumped as required from storage to the solution circuit for circulation of electrolyte through the cells. Except for the addition of purified feed solution and withdrawal of electrolyte for leaching, the circulating system for the cells is essentially a closed continuous circuit that includes the use of evaporative cooling towers for control of solution temperatures. Aluminum cathodes and Ag-Pb anodes are used for electrolysis, which is maintained at a current density of about 82 amp per sq ft. Cathode zinc produced is melted in a gas-fired reverberatory furnace and then cast into slabs on a straight line casting machine. Unloading and Storage—Fume produced by the Chihuahua plant is shipped in box cars, and fume by the El Paso plant in hopper bottom dump cars. Shipments as received are weighed on a 7 5-ton capacity railroad scale, sampled, and then moved over one of the two unloading hoppers with a car puller. The cars are then unloaded with mechanized equipment, a car scoop being used for unloading of box cars and a car shaker for the hopper bottom cars

The problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations. An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper. The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reagent for re-use. The Process as Planned In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp. became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the company, first drafted a process in July of that year—five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant. By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or lour-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1472°F). (b) The roasted ore would then be leached with hot aqueous ammonium bi-sulphate to form a slurry. The bath and the liquid metal in the aluw~inuw~ electrolytic cells are moving under the action of the Laplace forces. Consequently there are differences in level at the interface of the liquid. This phenomena is studied by means of a computer; the characteristics of the mathematical model used are presented with the results corresponding to two typical cases. This study gives a new and origi~zal interpretation of magnetic ej-jects; their action depends very closely on the hydraulic phenomenon which explain the sensibility of the cells to the slope and thickness of solid bath frozen around the pot. MAGNETIC effects produced in the electrolytic cells used for the production of aluminum are known to exist, a factor whose importance is well-known by producers through its influence on cell operation and output. In particular, these effects bring about movements in both the bath and metal as well as interface variations in level that are detrimental to sound electrolysis . A direct study of these effects by means of an experimental device would raise a number of problems particularly difficult not to say impossible to solve in the present state of techniques. It is for this reason that we had recourse to an electronic computer for working out the speed and pressure distribution within the liquid in the cells. We have assumed that all other possible causes for movement, such as thermal convection and evolution of gas at the anode, are acting without any connection with magnetic effects, and that consequently we may study each of these causes separately. A basic cause for magnetic effects lies in the presence of Laplace forces within the bath and metal. Electric current and magnetic field distribution have been calculated with the help of an electronic computer, and two communications about it have already been made to AIME.* 1) PRESENTATION OF THE MATHEMATICAL PATTERN In order to solve this problem, it was essential to assume a number of simplifying hypotheses with regard to both the geometry of the actual cells and the phenomena themselves. A first simplification consisted in assuming that the movements of the conducting liquid modify neither the electric currents nor the magnetic fields. In consideration of the magnitude of the values involved this assumption seemed accep-tible. 1.1) Finding the Equation of the Problem. The problem raised consisted in determining the flow of two viscous immiscible liquids with different densities subjected in a complex environment to gravity and Laplace forces. As a matter of fact, the sum of the external forces acting on the liquids is: F = JAB +pg where F = volume energy, B = magnetic field, J = current density, p = specific gravity, g = gravity. THERE are both advantages and disadvantages in using semikilled steels in place of killed steels. One advantage of semikilled steels is they provide a higher ingot-to-product yield. This is especially important to shipbuilders in the time of national emergency. By using semikilled steel for hull plates, a greater number of ships can be built from the same ingot tonnage. Consequently, if semikilled steel plates are adequate for the service, the advantage of the higher product yield is of considerable importance. The performance of hull plates is closely associated with the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and this, in turn, is strongly dependent on the composition of the steel. A low transition temperature is desirable because it indicates that the steel is less likely to fail at low ambient temperatures. Killed steels are known to have lower transition temperatures than semikilled steels. It is believed that the better qualities of killed steels in this respect are due mainly to the low oxygen contents of the steel. The principal deoxidizers, aluminum, silicon, and manganese, lower the oxygen content. Fundamental studies1-0 have shown that the oxygen content remaining after the addition of one of these three elements is influenced by the residual amounts of the other two present. In the current study, therefore, various amounts of silicon and aluminum were added to steels containing different manganese contents for the purpose of studying the influence of silicon and aluminum on the notched-bar properties of hot-rolled steels. Eleven types of steels were studied. The temperature at which the plates were finish-rolled was care- fully controlled at 1850°F. All plates were rolled to ¾-in. thickness, and tested in the as-rolled condition. The total number of steels prepared in the laboratory for this study was 95. The charge consisting of ingot iron and ferrosilicon equivalent to 0.10 pct Si was melted in a 200-lb induction furnace under an atmosphere of argon to insure low, uniform nitrogen contents. After the charge was melted and the desired temperature was obtained, the melt was partly deoxidized with either silicomanganese or aluminum. Aluminum was used for this purpose in only those steels with very low silicon contents, where the finished steel was to contain some aluminum. This initial deoxidizing addition was made to obtain consistent recoveries of subsequent additions of ferro-manganese, ferrosilicon, and aluminum. Carbon, in the form of graphite, was added, either just prior to tap or to the final aluminum addition. The entire heat of 200 lb was poured directly into a 6x6-in. big-end-up mold. The ingots of semikilled steel were capped with a steel plate. The killed steels, on the other hand, were poured with a hot-top containing 14 pct of the total volume of the ingot. The ingots were processed by heating to 2250°F, followed by forging to slabs 1¾ in. thick and 6 in. wide. After reheating to 2250°F, the slabs were rolled to 0.9-in. gage, using reductions of approximately 1/6 in. per pass. The 0.9-in. thick plates were immediately recharged in a furnace held at 1850°F. After 30 min in the furnace at 1850°F, the plates were rolled to ¾ in. in one pass. Following the final pass, the plates were stacked on edge on a brick floor, with a brick separating one from another, where they were allowed to cool in air. Drillings for chemical analysis were taken from the plates at locations corresponding to the top and bottom of each ingot. IN the realm of ore dressing the most pregnant feat of all time was announced in 1945: the winning of the mineral raw materials which made the harnessing of atomic energy possible. Lost in the stupendous implications of the end result, in the two billion dollar hugeness of the project, and in the famous names attached thereto, the fact that crude uranium ores had to be concentrated received relatively little notice in the press. Only the final link in the concentrating chain was publicized-ether extraction of uranyl nitrate, developed by Hoffman and carried on by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, or methods developed by the Ames group under Spedding. Some of the earlier links represented less glamorous but equally difficult and exacting research. One may only speak a word of admiration for those who worked hard, accomplished much, and said nothing. The universal lament for most of the year was "man shortage." A group of Canadian engineers expressed it as "being so short of labor that no labor was available to develop laborsaving devices." . Despite this, an outstanding amount of mineral-dressing progress was made in 1945. Necessity allowed no alternative. The insatiable demand of war for minerals forced the exploitation of lower and lower grade ores, and of others not before considered of commercial character or use, requiring the mineral dresser to fight for and win new bridgeheads on the home front.

Work on the calculation of vertical two-phase flow gradients by Cia. Shell de Venezuela has been based mainly on the "energy-loss" method proposed by Poett-mann and Carpenter in 1952. The "energy-loss-factor" correlation proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter was based on relatively low-rate flow data. This correlation proved inapplicable to high-rate flow conditions. In an attempt to establish a satisfactory correlation for high rates, a series of experiments was carried out at rates up to 5,000 BID in Cia. Shell de Venezuela's La Paz field in Venezuela, using tubing strings fitted with electronic surface-recording pressure elements. As a result of these experiments a correlation between energy-loss factor and mass flow rate was established which is believed to be applicable to a wide range of conduit sizes and crude types at high flow rates (e.g., above 900 BID for 27/8-in. OD tubing). It is anticipated that the resulting gradient calculations will have an accuracy of the order of % 5 per cent. At lower flow rates the energy-loss factor cannot be considered as constant for any mass rate of flow, but varies with the free gas in place and the mixture velocity. No satisfactory correlating parameter was obtained. As a practical compromise for low flow rates, a modification of the curve proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter was used. In practice this was found to give gradient accuracies of approxirnately ± 10 per cent clown to flow rates as low as 300 B/D in 27/8-in. tubing. INTRODUCTION Production operations in Cia. Shell de Venezuela's light- and medium-crude fields are principally concerned with high-rate flowing or gas-lift wells. Under these conditions the analysis of well performance, the selection of production strings and the design of gas-lift installations are vitally dependent on an accurate knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in vertical two-phase flow. Initially, attempts were made to establish the gradients empirically as done by Gilbert,' but the results were not reliable due to scarcity of data over a full range of rates and gas-oil ratios. Several methods of calculation based on energy-balance considerations were attempted, but the computations were cumbersome and the results cliscouraging. In 1952 a paper was published by Poettmann and Carpenter' which proposed a new approach. Their method was also based on an energy-balance equation. but it was original in that no attempt was made to evaluate the various components making up the total energy losses. Instead, they proposed a form of analysis which assumed that all the significant energy losses for mutiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional 1osses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. The basic method was applied in Venezuela to the problem of annular flow gradients in the La Paz and Mara fields" This involved establishing a new energy-loss-factor correlation to cover high flow rates and, also, some adaptation of the method to permit mechanized calculation using punch-card machines. The final result was 1 set of gradient curves for La Paz and Mara conditions which proved to be surprisingly accurate. With the encouraging results of the annular flow calculations, several attempts were made to obtain a corresponding set of curves for tubing flow. Here, unfortunately, little progress could be made. The original correlation of Poettmann and Carpenter was based on rather 1imited data derived from low-rate observations in 23/8- and 27/8-in. OD tubing. It did not cover the higher range of production rates, and extrapolation proved unsuccessful. A new correlation covering high flow rates was required, but this proved to be extremely difficult to establish since tubing flow pressure measurements at high rates did not exist—due to the difficulty of running pressure bombs against high-velocity flow. The necessity for reliable tubing flow data increased with the development of the new concessions in Lake Maracaibo, where high-rate tubing flow from depths of 10,500 ft became routine. Thus. it was decided to set up a full-scale test to establish a reliable energy-loss factor for tubing flow conditions. A La. Paz field light-oil producer with a potential of approximately 12,000 B/D on annular flow was chosen. This paper contains an account of experimental results obtained in an extensive investigation of steels containing zirconium. There recently appeared' an announcement by F. M. Becket, at whose suggestion and under whose general direction this investigation was made, a statement of the outstanding features of the work and a brief explanation of the factors that led to its inception. It is not possible, in a paper of this character, to record all of the operating and test data collected, which includes the production of more than 350 heats of steel. The difficulty of a complete presentation is increased by the fact that several lines of experimentation are too incomplete to warrant publication of the results at the present time. In addition to the methods of manufacture and test employed in the work, there is described experimental evidence on which are based certain definite conclusions regarding the remarkable effects brought about by the presence in steel of relatively small percentages of zirconium. When added to a molten steel bath, zirconium combines chemically with dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, in the order named, and is capable of neutralizing the embrittling effect of phosphorus in whole or in part; although in the case of phosphorus there is no evidence so far of actual chemical combination. These effects arc not in the nature of suppositions supported by theory, nor is their existence deduced merely on the basis of analytical evidence. In each phase of its relation to or reaction with the four impurities mentioned, zirconium affects beneficiauy the mechanical properties of the steel to which it is added, in a manner which it is one of the purposes of this paper to explain in terms of a tentative working theory.

It is my observation of events, not only in our own Institute, but also in several sister societies, that too long a tenure of office by the Secretary inevitably leads to a situation which is not good either for him or for the society. EMPLOYERS of engineers have not always been satisfied with the training that young graduates have received in the conventional four-year course. Specifically, employers of petroleum engineers for a number of years have believed that a four-year course does not allow sufficient time for the student to secure a fundamental engineering background plus the fundamentals of petroleum engineering. A group of California employers went so far as to set up a type of curriculum for a petroleum-engineering course, which was based on four years of undergraduate work and one year of graduate work, with most of the petroleum-engineering courses included in the graduate year.

THE importance of having perfectly pure metals has led me to present to the Institute a record of some of the trials that have been made to obtain these metals, and also to show one of the largest specimens of extremely thin metal plate which has ever been made. The malleability of metals varies generally directly with their purity, and hence it is only with very pure metals that thin sheets can be obtained. The competition among different manufacturers has been so great at times as to lead to expensive and apparently useless experiments in obtaining in the first instance very thin sheets, and afterwards very large and thin sheets of metal, apparently with no other purpose than that of being able to say that they had produced the thinnest or the largest thin sheet that had ever been made. These experiments were at first confined exclusively to iron, their object being to show the great dexterity of manipulation, as well as the purity of the metal manufactured. They have since been extended to almost all metals by electrical action, and have gone far beyond the limits of what was possible with purely mechanical means. The processes which have been used are rolling or hammering, electrical deposition in a vacuum, and lastly, electrical deposition on plates, easily soluble in acids. The first and last of these methods have been known and practiced for a very long time, having been used to make thin sheets of almost all the metals. The other is of quite recent application. In the iron manufacture, the strife to produce these thin sheets was commenced in the year 1865, by the Sligo Iron Works writing to a firm in Birmingham, England, on a sheet of iron containing 270 square centimeters, and weighing only 4.469 grams. For some time this was considered to be the thinnest sheet iron that could be made. T. W. Booker & Co., of Cardiff, England, however, produced a few months afterward, a sheet of the same size, weighing only 4.015 grams. This was succeeded by one rolled by Neville and Everitt, of Llannelly, weighing only 3.174 grams. Construction of the Ranger uranium project, located 230 kms east of Darwin in the Northern Territory, Australia, commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was A$407 million, made up of A$125 million in cash to the Federal Government and the issue of 125 million A$1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of A$16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd. (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd. (EZ). ERA's cash requirements to complete the project were estimated in October 1980 to be A$553 million. Project loans, secured by first ranking debenture stock, were arranged for a total of US$390 million, while second-ranking debenture loans totalling A$60 million were [ ] obtained from the vendors, Peko and EZ. Overseas participants (power utilities who had agreed to purchase uranium yellowcake under contract) arranged to take up 25% of the equity capital for A$102.5 million; Peko and EZ were allotted 30.5% each as satisfaction of vendors' consideration; and 14% representing A$57.5 million was issued to Australian residents in an underwritten public flotation in November, 1980. The loan and equity financing arrangements required the successful resolution of many complex and interlocking factors, including technical and economic feasibility, agreement with Aboriginal interests, compliance with Government policies, and securing of sales contracts.

As most of the industrial activity of Oregon is centered in the Portland area, the foundries there consume the bulk of the foundry sand produced in Oregon. Although a number of the larger towns scattered throughout the state have gray-iron foundries, the sand used by most of them is of local origin: The yearly consumption of foundry sand of all types for the past few war years in Oregon is estimated to have been approximately 40,000 tons valued at about $285,000, of which an estimated 18,000 tons was shipped in from the Ottawa, Ill., district for use largely by the steel foundries. Until 1945 much of the silica sand consumed by the steel foundries in the Pacific Northwest, approximately 50,000 tons in 1944, came from Ottawa, Ill. and surrounding regions. Although some silica sand was shipped in from Belgium in the past, none is known to have been imported in recent years. Early in 1945, a very promising high-grade silica sand being produced near Eugene, Oregon, was introduced, and all but two of the Portland steel foundries are using this new sand. Until a few years ago, the search for good local (Oregon) foundry sands was carried on largely by the foundry supply houses. Recently the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries has investigated a number of deposits and has carried on and fostered research on the most promising deposit near Eugene, about 120 miles south of Portland. High-grade silica foundry sand from this deposit is now being marketed in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The Eugene sand is one of the very few outstanding western steel-foundry sands. Field investigations by the Oregon Department show that there are relatively few deposits of sand in Oregon suitable for foundry use. A knowledge of the geology of the state makes this readily understandable. The only major primary sources of the quartz present in sandstones in Oregon are the intrusive masses of granite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite of late Jurassic or early Cretaceous age found in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestetn Oregon, a part of the old Klamath Mountain highland, and in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Transportation militates against the development of any possible deposits of foundry sand found east of the Cascade Mountains in central and eastern Oregon because few railroads traverse that area. East of the Cascades, which separate western from eastern Oregon, many of the older sediments of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age have either been metamorphosed or contain much volcanic eruptive material, and even if some of the Mesozoic sediments are highly quartzose in places, they are in relatively inaccessible areas. All the Tertiary sediments there are of continental origin and contain much ash and other volcanic debris, for there was great volcanic activity during much of that period. The technical difficulties hampering the metallographic analysis of silicon steels are chiefly the result of the extreme corrodibility of these alloys. The addition of silicon to iron in increasing quantities, up to about 6 per cent., rapidly increases the susceptibility of the alloy to chemical attack, not only in acid solution, but in water. This renders the preparation of metallographic sections very difficult, because of a non-selective attack upon the finely polished surface by the water used as a lubricant in polishing. This water attack masks the true structural details revealed by suitable etching reagents. It is thus necessary to use alcohol as a polishing lubricant in the last stages of preparation and to avoid all etching reagents having an aqueous base. A specific reagent for the identification of iron carbide in ferrous alloys, and the one hitherto used almost' exclusively by metallurgists, is an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium picrate, which stains this constituent selectively. Its application to silicon steels has not proved successful, as its distinctive selective action is more or less completely hidden by the general attack of the aqueous solvent on the silico-ferrite, greatly accentuated by the fact that this reagent must be used at its boiling temperature (105' C.). Thus, a powerful metallographic aid to the study of the higher silicon alloys, such as transformer steels, is lost. A new reagent has been developed for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty. It is with some hesitation that the list of etching reagents, already overburdened, is increased, but the properties of this new reagent are advantageous in several ways and a definite field for it may be found in the metallography of ferrous alloys. The reagent consists of a dilute solution of nitric acid and methyl alcohol in nitrobenzol. It is a great advantage to secure an anhydrous solution, as a tendency toward acidic etching has been traced to small amounts of water. Sized fractions of Wisconsin Gogebic taconite were reduced with hydrogen over the temperature range from 600° to 1000°C. In general, the degree and rate of reduction increase with temperature. Particle size has no observable effect except in the smaller fractions at 900°C and above, where reduction is impeded, possibly due to the siliceous nature of the ore. Gaseous diffusion appears to be significant as a rate controlling factor at certain stages. THE depletion of high grade iron ore reserves in the United States has established the need to utilize all available iron ore deposits, both in long range planning and from the viewpoint of national emergency. This has led to extensive research and development in this field. The beneficiation of Wisconsin Gogebic taconite ore has been previously studied by investigators at the University of Wiscconsin, 1 the United States Bureau of Mines,, Battelle Memorial Institute, 3 and others. Methods investigated have included concentration by flotation processes, magnetic and gravity separation, magnetic roasting and various combinations of them. The foregoing studies have been concerned with the production of an enriched ore suitable for blast furnace use. If the ore could first be reduced to metallic iron and then beneficiated, the product could be used directly in the open hearth or electric steel-making furnace. The by-passing of the blast furnace should enhance the economic feasibility of the beneficiating process. The work reported here,4 was undertaken to establish data on the hydrogen reduction of Wisconsin taconite that would eventually lead to the development of an economic direct reduction process for this and perhaps other low grade siliceous ores. The volume of work on direct reduction can be judged by the fact that 240 direct reduction processes were patented in the United States alone up to 1951, 5 and numerous additional processes have since been developed. Some of the factors contributing to direct reduction development are: 1) The increasing capital cost of the blast furnace and its accessory equipment. 2) The decreasing availability of high grade domestic ore. 3) The high cost of steel scrap for use in the open hearth and electric furnaces. In general, direct reduction processes can be divided into two types; those using a solid reductant (coal, peat, lignite) usually carried out in a kiln, and those using a gaseous reductant (H2, CO) in a shaft furnace or a fluidized bed retort. As there is no low cost coal readily available in northern Wisconsin but natural gas could be quite easily obtained, it is believed a gaseous reductant process would offer the greater feasibility for use on Wisconsin taconite. It is hoped that this preliminary work will beof interest to other investigators in this increasingly important field. TACONITE ORE The ore used in the investigation was obtained originally from the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and consisted of a representative composite made up from trench samples of the Norrie, Pabst, Plymouth, Pence, and Yale members of the Wisconsin Gogebic range iron formation. Chemically, the ore contains approximately 52 pct SiO, and 30 pct Fe. X-ray diffraction and other studies indicate the principal minerals to be quartz (SiO2), hematite (Fe2O3), and goethite (Fe2O3. H2O). Minor amounts of iron containing silicates, siderite (FecO3), and magnetite (FeO-Fe2O3) are present. The iron minerals and quartz are so finely disseminated that the ore requires grinding to less than 200 mesh (74 µ) for essential liberation.l,2 The iron content of each of the several size fractions studied is shown in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The method used throughout the investigation was based on that developed by the U. S. Triaxial compression tests have been performed to determine the strength characteristics of limestone, sand-stone and shale rocks subjected to controlled stress conditions. This control tuns exercised by varying the liquid pressures within and around a plastic-encased rock specimen. The pressure in the pores of the rock was varied throughout the range from atmospheric to 15,000 psig; the external pressure was changed over the same range with various positive pressure differences between is and the intertnal pressure. The data show that the rock strength increased and the mode of failure changed as the pressuire. surrounding the rock became greater than the pressure in the pores of the rock. These observations and the resu1ts of microbit drilling experiments indicate that the increased rock strength under pressure may bc an important effect in reducing drilling rare, but that other factors are probably of even greater importance. INTRODUCTION A large part of the research conductcd to reducc thc cost of drilling is directed toward improving present drilling technology and dcveloping new drilling methods. In spite of the fact that drilling is essentiaIly the act of making rocks fail, many details of the mechanism of failure are not known. It seems probable, therefore, that continuing studies of the fundamentals of rock failure can lay a foundation for future improvements in drilling technology. One of the factors which affects rock failure is the stress applied to the rock. This effect has been known for many years.'.'.; As an example, stress studics have been published by engineers' concerned with the strength characteristics of concrete in large dams. More recently, a number of investigators4-12 have explored the effects of stress on the strength of geologic formations and the geologic implications of their findings. During the last few years some research'" on rock strengths has also been conductcd in an attempt to gain additional insight into the factors which affeet rock drillability. In detcrmining the strength characteristics of rocks under different stress conditions, investigators have conventionally used triaxial compression equipment. wherein a jacketed rock cylinder is uniformly loaded from all directions and then compressed longitudinally. The results of this work have demonstrated that the mode of failure (brittle or malleable) is dependent upon the loading pressure, and that the strength of the rock increases as the loading pressure increases. These results clearly manifest that the stress, which is determined by the loading pressure, affects rock strength, and this implies that rocks under stress should be stronger and hence harder to drill. During the drilling of a porous rock the stress conditions are determined not only by the pressure surrounding the portion of the rock undergoing failure (confining pressure) but also by the pressure of the interstitial fluids within the rock (pore pressure). The importancc of both these pressures on the drilling rate of rocks has already been demonstrated by a number of investigators. Murray and Cunningham" found in microbit drilling expcriments that at constant pore pressures the drilling ratc decreased as the hydrostatic pressure surrounding an unjacketed, impermeable rock increased. Later Eckel" found that for jacketed Iimestone specimens the differcnce between hydrostatic (wellbore) pressure and formation (pore) pressure had an important effect on drilling rate. These observations of the effect of pressure on drilling rate emphasize that for drilling studies triaxial compression tests should be conducted under conditions of confining and pore pressure which simulate conditions underground. In the past, triaxial tests have been made under conditions which do not reproduce those underground. In particular, most of the tests on porous materials have keen made at varying confining pressures but with atmospheric pore pressures. In only one group of tests' was any data on the effect of pore pressurc reported, and these few data were on materials not representiltive of those encountered in drilling earth formations. The research described herein was initiated to deter-mine the importance of both internal pore pressure and confining pressure on failure characteristics of limestone. sandstone and shales. Triaxial loading equipment was used to obtain strength data at pressures up to 15,000 psig. An additional objective of this research was to apply these results to drilling rate studies by comparing them with the previously published drilling data of Murray and Cunningham" and of Eckel12. The work reported here is but one step in determining and evaluating the fundamental mechanisms which control drilling rate. Additional research is needed to clarify other aspects of the drilling process. The better

Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three arc. equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which arc lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the elecric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 em.) wide, 83 in. (210 em.) high. and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed ill panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 43/16 in. The Report on the Manufacture of Coke for the year 1880 by J. D. Weeks1 includes an historical account of the early days of coke-making that is very complete and accurate, and but little can be added to it to fully cover the period prior to 1885. The few additional references that have been found follow. The earliest suggestion found about making coke in this country is in a letter from D. M. Randolph to Harry Heth, dated August 22, 1808. Heth was then operating the mines in the Richmond, Virginia coal field and had sent Randolph to England to investigate steam engines for hoisting and pumping and other conditions in the coal industry there. The letter was written in London and said: "I shall explain to you, how, by turning Deep Run fine coal in Coak, to make great profit from what has heretofore been useless. You will do well to ascertain the price and amount of demand for this article throughout the U. States among brewers and manufacturers. I know how also to make every bushel of such fine slaty coal, fetch as much as any of the best grate coal, by turning it into Coak: and that too, after paying all expenses of the process."2 His interest was to use the slack more for domestic purposes than otherwise, probably, although what the interest of brewers would be in coke as fuel does not appear. Nothing ever came of this suggestion, and so far as known, no coal from this field was coked excepting in gas-making. The Plumpsock Iron Works, mentioned by Weeks as having used coke, was advertised for sale in June 1818.3 It was stated that stone coal was the only fuel used at the works, the pit being within 100 yards of the forge. "Three men with a horse and cart are sufficient to raise coke, and haul to the forge all the coal necessary for keeping the works in full operation." The coke, of course, was made in ricks, or heaps, and not in ovens. The first real coke oven in this country was probably built in Connellsville, the coal coming from a mine nearby on Mounts Creek. L. L. Norton operated an iron foundry and was persuaded by his foreman, one Nichols, who came from Durham, England to build a coke oven. The oven was 12 feet square, and the first coke was produced in 1833. Later

Electrical model studies have been made of the effect of drainhole drilling on production capacity. Drain holes are those lateral holes which are sometimes drilled to assist in increasing the oil drainage into the main wellbore. The studies indicate that if the drainhole length i.r near 0.2 of the drainage radius, the increase in production capacity may be approximately 1.8, 2.08, trnd 2.33 for the case of one, two and four drain holes, respectively. If multiple drain holes are drilled, shorter holes are required to achieve a specific increase in production capacity than if one or two holes are drilled. To achieve increases in production capacities by factors near three it is shown that the drainhole lengths divided by the drainage radii must be approximately 0.64, 0.48, cnd 0.37 for the case of one, two and four drain holes, respectively. IN T RO DUCTION Kecent developments in drilling techniques have permitted the drilling of lateral or horizontal holes to increase the rate of production. The number of these drain holes may vary from 1 to 10, and they have been drilled laterally as much as 100 ft. Drainhole drilling at substantial depths is of recent origin but has been used in the Spraberry field of West Texas, the La Pas field in Western Venezuela, and certain fields in California. The diameter of the drain holes has been approximately 6 in. In drilling drain holes it is desired to know how much increase in production capacity may be expected, what additional benefit may be gained by drilling more than one drain hole, and what increase in production capacity may be brought about by lengthening the existing drain holes. In realization of the importance of lateral drilling, electrical model studies were made to provide quantitative estimates on the effect of drain holes on production capacity. ANALYSIS An electrical model was used in studying this problem. A wooden circular reservoir approximately 30 in. in diameter and 2 in. deep was filled with a dilute salt solution to a depth of 1 in. A copper band formed the periphery of the tank, and a copper wire was inserted in the center of the tank to represent the well. The drainage radius divided by the well radius was equal to 500. A diagram of this type model is shown in the inset of Fig. 1. An electrical potential was applied to the wire well and copper band at the periphery to determine the flow of current. Following this measurement copper wires of various length were soldered to the vertical wire well in such a manner as to simulate lateral wells drilled into the reservoir. Multiple lateral holes of various lengths were studied by varying the number and length of copper wires soldered to the vertical wire well. All multiple lateral wells were located symmetrically about the vertical well. The effect on production capacity by drilling an infinite number of lateral holes was studied by replacing the lateral hole with a copper disk. For each condition the flow of current was measured and compared with the flow of the vertical well only. The model which is thus described provides the steady state increases in production capacity which may be expected in some cases. The data conform to those which would be observed for a uniform homogeneous reservoir. The data may have primary application to those reservoirs producing above the bubble point. It is realized that few lateral holes are drilled in reservoirs of this type, but the data may be of some value in guiding future work or aiding to explain observed phenomena.
