WalSH, Chipman, King, and rant' have measured the water content (as hydrogen) of actual steel-making slags. An average water content of 290 ppm was found for basic open-hearth tapping slags and 114 ppm for acid open-hearth slags. Upon equilibration of these slags at 1550°C with a 25 pct H20-75 pct Nz atmosphere, the water content increased to about 410 and 300 ppm for the basic and acid slags, respectively. Walsh et al. concluded that an acid slag was thus relatively far removed from equilibrium, and that basic slags showed a closer approach to equilibrium, with the water vapor in the furnace atmosphere. Herasymenko2 contended that these conclusions were unjustified, as the oxygen pressure used in the equilibration experiments, ;bout 5 x X atm, was quite different from that found in the furnace. Consequently, during the experiments the slag composition would have changed due to oxidation of ferrous iron. As an extension of Walsh's work and to attempt to clarify this matter, the solubility of water in a basic open-hearth slag was measured as a function of oxygen pressure. Similar measurements were also made on synthetic silicates in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiO, system. The experimental technique has been described previously by Walsh et a1.l and Uys and King.3 Samples of the basic open-hearth finishing slag, contained in 10-cc platinum crucibles, were equilibrated at 1550°C with atmospheres of different oxygen pressure but constant water-vapor pressure, Ph~o = 0.192 atm. Calculations, as well as measurements, indicate that this figure approximates the water pressure of the combustion gases in a steam-atomized, oil-fired open hearth. Oxygen pressures in the open hearth can vary from 10"2 atm in the combustion gases to between l0-' and 10" atm in the steel bath. The former figure depends on the combustion practice and the latter on the carbon content and temperature of the bath. The oxygen pressure of the slag should lie somewhere between these extremes and is expected to be closer to that of the steel bath than that of the combustion gases. Oxygen pressures were therefore varied between 10" and 6 x l0 atm. At the lowest pressure the slag "puffed up" when quenched (indicating possible loss of water) so experiments were not conducted at lower oxygen pressures. The results are shown in Fig. 1, which includes the water content of the slag "as sampled". The results show that the water content of the slag increased appreciably on equilibration with water vapor at 0.192 atm pressure and that the water solubility apparently decreases with increased oxygen pressure. The solubilities found are comparable to those of the Li20-Ca0-Si02 system.3 Work with synthetic slags in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiOz system was performed at 1500" C, with Ph20 = 0.192 atrn and for oxygen pressures varying between 10"2 and 10-lo atm. Samples for chemical analysis were prepared as described by Larson.4 The results are shown in Fig. 2. Some low-silica melts tested at low oxygen pressures "puffed up" when quenched and analyzed less than 100 ppm water; these results are not included in Fig. 2. The melts containing 40 mol pct silica also showed a tendency to "puff up" during the quench, when they were tested at the lowest oxygen pressure. These results indicate that, at constant silica content, the solubility of water decreases somewhat with increased oxygen pressure. The effect is, however, small considering the wide range of oxygen pressures studied. Also, at constant oxygen pressure (above about lom5 atm) the solubility increases

Lieut. Maxwell E. Erdory, now with the Army of Occupation in France, writes as follows: "The 602d Engrs., many of whose officers are members of the Institute, started its active service in France at Avocourt, where we built a road across `No Man's Land.' This road from Avocourt to Montfaucon started us on a career of road building which lasted from Sept. 26 to Nov. 9. The engineer in war has no working hours. Our first job meant 50 hr. continuous work, a layoff of 4 hr. and 18 hr. more. That was our initiation in this war game. "Back in the States we practised building trenches, dugouts, and underground shelters of all sorts. In France we were unfortunate enough to come upon the scene when the so-called open warfare started. That made all the above unnecessary. Roads was the cry and our job was to see that all the artillery got their roads and got over them. "I might mention here that the roads of France, which were in excellent condition except for numerous shell holes, w re one of the leading factors in the rapid termination of the war. "We built a narrow-gage railroad from Romagne to Landre St. George which cost us a few men. At Stenay we did our first bridge building. We built nine bridges across the Meuse, capable of carrying tanks, in 18 hr. The next day the American army crossed these bridges on their way to Virton, Belgium, and the Rhine. " Our course from Virton, Belgium, took us through Longwy, Musson, and Athus, in which towns I inspected the steel plants. In Musson as well as Longwy the Germans had destroyed most of the blast furnaces. This destruction began in August, 1917. In Athus the furnaces were in good condition, the Germans having removed all motors land electrical apparatus, rendering the plant inoperative. I have taken several photos of interest of these plants. "It is but fitting that I say that the engineer in this war has contributed much toward its success but the "Doughboy" is its hero and we engineers one and all say "All hail the Doughboy."

Secondary Twinning. - When there is reason to believe that the twinning has been produced subsequently to the original formation of the crystal, or crystalline mass, as, for example, by pressure, it is said to be secondary. Thus the calcite grains of a crystalline limestone often show such secondary twinning lamella?. The same are occasionally observed (Ilc, 001) in pyroxene crystals. Further, the polysynthetic twinning of the triclinic feldspars is often secondary in origin. This subject is further discussed on a later page, where it is also explained that in certain cases twinning may be produced artificially in a crystal individual - e.g., in calcite (see Art. 282).

Basically, the Buckley-Leverett theory involves two systems which are similar in nature but are differentiated by time. These systems may be described by the fractional flow and frontal advance equations which essentially characterize the mechanics of oil movement while being expelled from the reservoir. The fractional flow equation originally developed by Leverettl may be expressed in the more usable form The development of this equation is based on Darcy's law describing fluid flow through porous media and applies to the flow at only one point (it is a point function). For simplification, the fractional flow equation is written in the above form because the capillary forces always increase the fractional flow of the displacing phase regardless of the direction of flow or the displacing phase. If, for simplicity, the effects due to gravity and capillary pressure differences are neglected, the fraction of the displacing fluid, f, at any point in the flowing stream is related to the properties of the system by 1 Thus, it is seen that in the absence of capillary and gravitational effects, fd for a given sand and fluids varies only with saturation and pressure. The magnitude of the viscosity ratio, —a has an effective range (range of about 30) in the system where gas is displacing oil and a much smaller range for water displacing oil. In order to make the fractional flow equation more versatile, it is necessary to connect the fractional flow at a given point and saturation with time. This problem was approached by Buckley and Leverett" who developed the frontal advance equation, Eq. 3 states that the rate of advance of a plane that has a fixed saturation, Sd, is proportional to the change in composition of the flow stream caused by a small change in the saturation of the displacing fluid. It is, essentially, a transformation of a material balance equation representing the net rate of accumulation of the displacing phase within a homogeneous sand block. This accumulation is proportional to the difference between the rate at which the displacing fluid enters the sand and that at which it leaves. Eq. 3 describes the velocity with which a plane of constant displacing phase saturation advances through a porous system. Buckley and Leverett," Babson,' Kern," Welge, and others have adequately discussed the basic mechanism and application of the fractional flow and frontal advance equations. APPLICATIONS OF THE FRONTAL ADVANCE THEORY TO PETROLEUM RECOVERY Two general applications of the Buckley-Leverett frontal advance theory involve the system in which the oil is being displaced by an expanding gas cap overlying the oil zone and that in which the oil is being displaced by water. Displacement by Gas in the Presence of an Immobile Water Saturation A system in which gas is the displacing phase may be thought of as having two forces effecting the displacement process. These forces are the gravitational force and that force exerted by the displacing gas. The gravitational effects control the displacing efficiency of the gas. The gravitational effect will be less at higher rates of flow, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the displacement of the oil by the gas. The more efficient displacements occur at flow rates which are less than the gravity free fall rate. Capillary forces can be neglected without materially changing the magnitude of the gas saturation. The Mile Six pool is used herein to illustrate the calculating procedures in evaluating gas drive-gravity drainage field perfomlance. These calculations represent the determination of the gas-oil contact when the distribution of the hydrocarbon pore volume is considered. Two methods

DURING the roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates and by-product recovery from flue dusts, the zinc sul-fate phase may occur in various stages of the processes. In addition to zinc sulfide, other sulfide phases are usually present such as CdS, PbS, CuzS, and FeS. Consequently, the effect of these sulfides on the thermal decomposition of ZnS04 was investigated. Merck high-purity, anhydrous zinc sulfate was used as the starting material. The sulfate was heated under an argon atmosphere, at a rate of 10°C per min. With the first slight indication of decomposition as determined by gas analysis, the sample was removed from the furnace and allowed to cool. X-ray patterns showed no other phase present. It is estimated that less than 0.05 pct of the ZnS04 decomposed. The metal sulfides were also heated under an argon atmosphere to drive off any adsorbed water. The materials were then sized (-200 to +270 mesh), mixed in predetermined mole ratios, and pressed into pellets. The experimental measurement of the reaction rate consisted of purifying the argon carrier gas, continuous flushing of the heated reacting mixture with argon, and collection and analysis of the SOn product gas. As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiC1-KC1 mixtures, as first proposed by Gunkz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public hut Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than 90 pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on' German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of 140 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, SiO2, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, Director, with respect to the iron and calcium Content. The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

THE following note describing the behavior of copper under rather unusual conditions is offered here for its suggestiveness rather than as a complete study of the question. The examinations described were made because of a request for information concerning the embrittlement of copper when heated in a molten salt bath (sodium chloride) for the purpose of cleaning it, as well as for softening it. It is well known that metals may be rendered very brittle by electrolytic action, in aqueous solutions, in all probability by the action of nascent hydrogen, and it was suspected that perhaps the embrittlement of the copper by means of the molten salt was produced in a somewhat similar manner. It was found that the copper was in contact with iron (or steel) while immersed in the molten salt, through the occasional use of an iron stirring rod, iron forceps for handling the pieces, and an iron pot for containing the fused salt. In the electrochemical potential series iron and copper stand some distance apart, copper being electronegative to the iron. Assuming that the two metals bear a similar relation to each other, when immersed in a bath of molten salt, as they do in an aqueous solution, they would be expected to form a galvanic couple, the copper being the cathode. By this means the copper might be embrittled, as often happens in aqueous solutions, by the action of the liberated hydrogen. In this case, however, the embrittlement must be attributed to some other agent than hydrogen. To demonstrate how copper may be embrittled under these conditions, two small rods, one of copper and the other of mild steel, approximately 3/8 in. (9.5 mm.) in diameter, were immersed in a bath of sodium chloride that had been heated somewhat above its fusion point (melting point of sodium chloride is 819° C.) and an electromotive force of approximately 6 volts from a storage battery was impressed upon the system. THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, produced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. 1). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OF THE ST. In recent investigations,1,2 the strength and thermal stability of dislocation substructures prepared by 5 to 25 pct room temperature tensile straining and recovery annealing at 120°, 160°, and 200°C have been studied in randomly oriented polycrystalline high purity aluminum. The techniques of transmission electron microscopy revealed that a major source of the strength and stability of dislocation substructures was the formation, during room temperature straining, of well-defined cells bounded by dislocation tangles which rearranged into nearly perfect dislocation networks during recovery, forming the boundaries of subgrains. The strength of such substructures increases with decreasing cell or subgrain size,2"6 and the formation of fine subgrain structures can provide thermally metastable strength at low temperatures and can favorably alter the course of primary creep at elevated temperatures.7'8 For maximum benefit, however, sub-grain growth should be reduced or eliminated. It was, therefore, decided to investigate the use of heterogeneous precipitation on dislocation networks as a means of imparting increased strength and thermal stability to subgrain structures through effective pinning. Basic Inc., has been mining magnesite and brucite for 27 years at Gabbs, Nev. This is a medium sized open-pit mine. The magnesite deposits are in north-western Nye County about 30 miles east of Luning, Nev., on the west slope of the Paradise Range, at an elevation between 5000 and 6000 ft. The magnesite and associated brucite is used to make magnesia refractories employed principally in the steel industry and magnesium oxide for various chemical uses.

THE purpose of ore dressing is to separate the rough ore into one or several valuable concentrates and a discarded tailing. The first step is to crush the ore so that the resulting particles may be individually valuable or worthless. The next step generally has to be a sizing operation, because the property by which concentration is effected depends on the size of the in-dividual mineral particles as well as on their physical properties. These two effects may cancel each other if a preliminary sizing is not resorted to. Sizing is accomplished by screening or classifying. Screening depends almost solely on the dimensions of the particles; classifying depends also on the specific gravity of the particles and the viscosity of the settling medium in which the classifying operation is conducted. Classification, therefore, is to a certain extent a con-centrating operation as well as a sizing operation. Before the days of concentration by flotation, the available screens were mechanically poor. As a result classification was employed for sizing in the range. of comparatively coarse sands (table feeds). In recent years, the advent of stage-grinding to flotation size has brought about the development of good screens, which are more economical than classifiers down to about 20, -mesh. With decreasing size at which separation is to be made, screens become increasingly uneconomical, while classifiers become increasingly economical. The line of demarcation between the respective fields of screening .and classification is, therefore, fairly sharp. With the development of processes of concentrating finely comminuted ore, the need for classifiers or other sizing devices operating so as to make efficiently a split at a very fine size has become increasingly apparent. Such classifiers might be termed de-slimers, from the fact that they separate a material having a slimy ap-pearance from one having the characteristics of a sand. Sizing-tests are carried on by means of testing sieves, the finest of which have apertures of about 1/500 of an inch. The 200-mesh sieve, which has an average open-ing of 0.0029 linear inches is generally considered the limit of practical test-sizing. As a result, little is known of minus 200-mesh material and the advantages of classifying concentrator feeds within the minus 200-mesh range has been overlooked. An extension of the -present sieve scale beyond the 200-mesh screen is given in Table 1.

The order-disorder transition in Ag-Mg alloys in the range 17 to 26 at. pct Mg was investigated and some thermodynamic, electrical and mechanical properties of ordered Ag-Mg alloys were measured. A modification of the phase diagram is proposed on the basis of measured transition temperatures. The stability of the ordered structure is analyzed in terms of the quasichemical theory. Kinetic aspects of the order-disorder transition were also investigated. The energies of ordering at 273°K of Ag-Mg alloys were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. The electrical resistivities and the tensile Properties of the ordered alloys were measured. The exothermic energy of ordering increased with magnesium concentration up to the composition Ag3Mg; it is discussed in terms of the quasichemical theory. Pronounced order hardening was observed and can be explained by several strengthening mechanisms, which are particularly effective because of a change in crystal structure associated with the ordering transition. IN silver-rich solid solutions containing approximately 17 to 26 at. pct Mg, long- range ordering may occur during appropriate therma1 treatments. Clare-brough and Nicholas1 first detected such long-range order in the solid solution of composition Ag3Mg and suggested that the unit cell of the superlattice contained 256 atoms. x-ray2 and electron diffraction3 investigations confirmed the occurrence of long-range order, but indicated a shifted Ll2-type structure. On the basis of recent X-ray measurements the crystal structure of ordered Ag3Mg has been confirmed as type D023.4 The present paper is concerned with the order-disorder transition in silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions and some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the ordered alloys. The effects of short-range order on the properties of silver-rich solid solutions containing up to 26 at. pct Mg are discussed in a concurrent paper.5 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Specimens of Ag-Mg alloys containing from 18 to 26 at. pct Mg were prepared in the form of 1.0-mm-diam wires as described in Section 1.1 of Ref. 5. Disordered specimens were prepared by annealing at 773°K for 1 hr and quenching into iced brine. Ordered specimens were prepared by annealing at 773°K for 1 hr and slowly cooling to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The specimens were stored at 78°K. 1.2) Resistivity Measurements. Electrical resistivi- ties were measured by a potentiometric method.' Equilibrium values were obtained at several temperatures. The kinetics of ordering were investigated by following the time-dependent changes of the resistivity of initially disordered specimens during annealing. The specimens were enclosed in copper capsules and immersed in salt pots; the heating up was accelerated by injecting preheated helium into the capsules. 1.3) Calorimetry. The energies of ordering of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference between the heat effects of additions of completely ordered and disordered specimens of the same composition. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.6 Magnesium was used for thermal compensation in most calorimetric runs in order to improve the accuracy.677 1.4) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out with wire specimens at room temperature as described in Section 1.5 of Ref. 5. Microhardness measurements were also made.? 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The characteristics of the order-disorder transition of silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions will be discussed first. Some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the ordered alloys will then be considered and compared with the corresponding properties of dis-disordered alloys. 2.1) The Order-Disorder Transition. 2.1.1) Thermodynamic and Structural Aspects. The transition temperatures Tt were determined from discontinuities in the slope of the equilibrium resistivity vs temperature curves. Normalized curves for three compositions are shown in Fig. 1. The transition temperature increases with the magnesium concentration and reaches a maximum at the stoichiometric composition Ag3Mg. The transition temperature of the alloy Ag3Mg was measured as 665° ± 2°K and compares with published values of 660°,1 663°,8 and 66°k.3 In the slopes of the resistivity vs temperature curves of alloys containing 22.2 and 22.5 at. pct Mg, discontinuities were observed at two temperatures. Such upper and lower discontinuities indicate a two-phase field. A modified form of the published phase diagram9 is shown in Fig. 2. A two-phase field was found only on the low-magnesium side of the composition Ag3Mg. On the high-magnesium side, the existence of a two-phase field could not be established because of insufficient resolution, but such a field must be present. This part of the phase diagram can be made complete by a eutec-toid-type reaction a = (a' + ß). The existence of a boundary between the two-phase fields (a + ß) and (a' + ß) is also in accord with published lattice parameters.3 The crystal structure of ordered Ag3Mg (type Do23)

AS a possible method of improving the elevated temperature strength properties of zirconium, an investigation was initiated on the feasibility of producing a dispersion-strengthened material. Because of the high reactivity of zirconium, its high solubility for oxygen, and the stability of the Zr-0 solid solution, the major problem in such a development is choice of a suitable dispersant. Thus, in the present investigation we were concerned primarily with the stability of various dispersants in the zirconium matrix. The experimental procedure consisted of blending powders of zirconium and a dispersant, followed by cold compaction and extrusion. The best available source of -325 mesh zirconium powder contained between 1500 and 3500 ppm Oz; to this material, powders of zirconium carbide (5 p max), vanadium carbide (5 p max), alumina (0.03 p average), lan-thana (0.8 to 2 p), ceria (0.8 to 2 p), yttria (0.8 to 2 p), calcia (44 p rnax), or thoria (0.6 to 0.8 p) were added in amounts of 7 vol pct and compacted at 65 tsi. A cylindrical compact having a density between 70 and 80 pct of theoretical and dimensions of 1 in. diam by 1-114 in. high was thus produced. After canning in copper, these billets could be extruded (5: 1) on a 54-ton capacity, slow-traverse hydraulic press with the billet temperature at 1550°F and the extrusion die at 900°F. However, lack of densifica-tion of some of the extruded billets necessitated ratios of at least 23 :1. Ultimately, all billets were successfully extruded at 1500°F to 0.190 in. diam (32 :I), fully dense rods using a 200-ton capacity press and a ram speed of 90 ipm. The microstructures of as-extruded Zr-7 vol pct LazOS and Zr-7 vol pct Y2Os are shown in Fig. l(a) and (c), respectively. These structures are similar to all the as-extruded materials and consist of an elongated, single-phase zirconium matrix dispersed with oxide or carbide particles. Very little porosity is observed, and the interface between matrix and particles appears satisfactory. The size and distribution of particles, however, are not ideally of the type desired for dispersion strengthening. Since the primary study was of particle stability with respect to zirconium, no attempt was made to overcome agglomeration during powder blending and fabrication. The Pueblo Viejo Mine, a 7, 250 mtpd (8,000 stpd) gold-silver cyanidation plant built by Rosario Dominicana S. A., was described in Volume I of this monograph. At the time of writing that volume, Pueblo Viejo had not yet gone on-stream and operating data or costs could not be presented. Since that time this information has been obtained and several interesting modifications and an expansion have been made to the plant. Because Pueblo Viejo is the largest open-pit gold mine in the world and one of the world's leading gold-silver operations with production of approximately 31 kg (1,000 oz) gold and 125 to 155 kg (4,000 to 5, 000 oz) silver per day, the authors have updated the previous data and flow sheet. The Dominican Government, which held a 4670 interest in Rosario Dominicana S. A., completed purchase of the mine to gain full control in 1979. Rosario Resources will continue to manage the mine, at least until the end of 1980. Gold was produced at Pueblo Viejo almost 500 years ago with initial production in the year 1505. Rosario Resources became interested in the property in 1969 and found surface oxidation had rendered the upper portion of the ore body amenable to direct cyanide treatment. The treatment of the underlying gold-bearing sulfide zone is still undergoing metallurgical studies. The ore is considered to be a laterite; and because there appeared to be few boulders in the ore zone, only a 400 m (16 in. ) square grizzly was initially installed ahead of the mills when the plant went on-stream in late 1974 at a design capacity of 7,250 mtpd (8,000 stpd). Operation also proved the ore to be harder than was originally anticipated. During 1967 a 1. 25 m by 1. 5 m (48 in. by 60 in. ) jaw crusher was installed to -feed the 1, 000 mt (1, 100 st) mill bin. Minus 200 mm (8 in.) crushed ore is fed directly to two 5.5 m by 1. 8 m (18 ft by 6 ft) semi-autogenous mills re-powered with 750 km (1,000 hp) motors and 50 mm (2 in.) grates. Each mill product is screened at 13 mm (1 /2 in.) by a vibrating screen. Screen oversize from each mill is combined on a single return belt equipped with a magnetic head pulley for grinding ball removal. The non-magnetic oversize is then split into two fractions for return to the primary mills. Originally, a minus 6 mm (1/4 in ) product was made on each screen and fed to a 300 kw (400 hp) 2.6 m by 3. 7 m (8-1/2 ft by 12 ft) regrind mill. During a plant expansion in 1978, an intermediate mill of 746 kw (1,000 hp) was installed to operate in open circuit on the combined primary mill

Industrial minerals enjoyed a fairly successful year in 1978, despite the sluggish economy, inflation, and environmental restrictions. A glance at US Bureau of Mines statistics shows that, in general, production of industrial minerals increased from + 1% (salt) to as much as 26% (sulfur, other than Frasch or recovered). A few industrial minerals showed a decline; fluorspar production, for example, registered a 23% decrease in 1978 from 1977 due to the closing of three domestic mines. Bromine, natural sodium sulfate, Frasch sulfur, and vermiculite also had production decreases of 2-6% in 1978.
