The Transaclions of the Institute afford abundant evidence of the general recognition by mining engineers of the importance of a safety-lamp which will not only give warning of the presence of fire-damp, but will also indicate the proportion in which it is present.' In 1981 Ertec Rocky Mountain, Inc. completed a significant development in contemporary planning support; MINEPAK was completed, tested on various properties and offered for license. MINEPAK was one of the first computer systems for ore body analysis and mine planning that - Was designed as an interactive and completely integrated system - Was portable so that it can run on many hardware systems - Was really user friendly - Can run on minicomputers and on some microprocessors - Was built around a data base management system MINEPAK was designed to be a completely general block modeller and it achieved that goal. Since it contained a gridded file type, surfaces could be easily modelled but the system needed extensions to allow layered deposits to be modelled with the same ease as block models. So COALPAK was designed. COALPAK is an extension as well as a modification of MINEPAK. A 'layer' file type was defined and retrofitted into the existing system, new software tools were developed for modelling layered deposits, and tools for strip mining were written.

AN UNUSUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR INSTITUTE MEMBERS to increase or complete their sets of the Transactions. In order to encourage the custom of members increasing each year the number of Volumes of the Transactions in their private libraries until the sets are complete, the Board of Directors has authorized the sale of Transactions previous to the year 1913 at the following greatly reduced rates. This offer is made effective for sales made only during the year 1914, and applies only to members in good standing, and to libraries. The reduced price automatically ceases to apply to any volume when the total number of such volume left in stock is reduced to fifty (50).

University of Nevada's recent Bonanza Days celebration turned out to be the real thing when Kennecott Copper Co, presented the school with $30,000 for new laboratory equipment for the MacKay School of Mines, J. C. Kinnear, Jr., general manager of Kennecott's Nevada Div., handed the check to Stout, university president, Chemical Construction Inter-American Ltd,, signed a contract with Noranda Mines, Ltd. for construction of a sulphur-iron plant in the Niagara Peninsula. Work has been started and it is expected that the plant will be finished by summer 1954.

Three meetings of the Institute for the presentation and discussion of technical papers were held in 1913: The 104th meeting, comprising the Annual Business Meeting as well as technical sessions, was held at New York, Feb. 18 to 20, 1913; the 105th meeting was held at Butte, Mont., Aug. 16 to 21, 1913, at which papers obtained largely through the efforts of the Committee on Precious and Base Metals were presented; and the 106th meeting was held at New York, Oct. 16 and 17, 1913, under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee.
