The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineer-. in- arts embraced by it through inter¬change of knowledge. This can best be clone by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short " practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that Will be a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper fre¬quently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication con¬tributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following sugges¬tions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts. 1. SUBJECTS: The subject must be within the field of the Institute.

Linear aquifers, either limited or essentially infinite, may be encountered in reservoir engineering practice. In areas where faulting fixes reservoir boundaries, the fault block reservoir may have an aquifer of limited extent whose geometry is best approximated as linear. An infinite linear aquifer can occur as a regional feature whenever water movement through the aquifer member is constrained to one direction. Such constraints can arise from major faults, facies changes or pinchout of the member. Miller* pointed out that linear aquifers have received only meager attention in the past. He analyzed the performance of finite and infinite aquifers, developed working equations and curves, and presented examples. While Miller's curves may be used fairly easily, a separate one is required for each size of aquifer. In this paper, Miller's equations have been used as a starting point. By modifying them slightly, they can be reduced to a form which yields a single working curve, applicable to any size of aquifer. Thus. interpolation between curves is eliminated and accuracy is improved. Miller's results for finite aquifers covered only the boundary condition of no flow across the outer aquifer boundary. This paper also includes the case of constant pressure at the outer aquifer boundary.

The effectiveness of rock bolts in resisting shear displacement along preexisting fracture surfaces or slip planes was determined in the laboratory with full-scale bolts and large-scale shear test equipment. The system variables were the type of bolt, orientation of bolt relative to shear surface, and normal pressure on the interface. Results showed that, in general, both conventional bolts and resin- grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase the shear resistance along a fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on the plane is in the order of 25 psi and when the bolt is oriented such that it tends to lengthen as the shear progresses. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented such that they lose tension as shear displacement occurs added no shear resistance since the tension drops to zero at very small shear displacements.

It scarcely is possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects follow a fairly consistent pattern; most are large open pit mines with relatively low grade orebodies but huge reserves; the total price tag is in nine significant figures and half or more of the total cost is for infrastructure. West' notes that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures in the free world. He anticipates that by 1975 such investments will reach the $10-11 billion annual figure and that in the period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. West estimates that 75% of the total capital will come from internally generated funds. Conceivably, a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially if the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

With the mounting emphasis on unconventional energy sources, total consumption of lithium minerals will increase significantly in the next decade. The recent development of the lithium battery, for example, may greatly boost the demand for lithium metal. At the same time, the growth in the ceramic, glass, and chemical industries is bound to increase the demand for lithium minerals. In fact, the entire consumption or utilization breakdown of lithium minerals will change considerably from its current pattern. Briefly, today's market for lithium minerals' can be grouped into three categories: (1) Lithium concentrates. Accounting for 57% of market use, these concentrates are beneficiated Li-A1 silicates for ceramic, glass, and glass-ceramic raw materials. The concentrates are chiefly spodumene; inverted iron-depleted beta-spodumene; and petalite or its isochemical decomposition product spodumene + quartz intergrowth ("squi"). In the past, lepidolite has also been used.

Most roof bolts are used in mines with bedded roofs, but it has not been determined to what degree thin-bedded roofs can be reinforced by bolting if there is no thick member in which to anchor the bolts, or what function the bolts must perform in such a case. Owing to widespread practice of systematic bolting to support thin-bedded roofs, moreover, it is desirable to design roof-bolting systems on a quantitative basis. Specifically, a solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, what is the optimum length, spacing, orientation, and tightness of bolts consistent with safety and economy? The investigation reviewed here has produced a functional equation to evaluate these variables and establish basic principles of roof bolting.

DRILLING fluids as an aid in drilling holes into the earth have been in use successfully for more than a half a century. Originally used in a primitive fashion in water well drilling before the turn of the century, drilling fluids came into their own in 1901 when they were incorporated as an indispensable part of the newly invented rotary oil drilling method. Since drilling fluids have been the basic factor in successful modern oil well drilling, at- tested by the dramatic growth of the U. S. petroleum industry, their study and development have naturally taken place in the oil industry. An abundance of engineering and scientific literature has appeared on the subject of drilling fluids. Application to Exploration Drilling The drilling fluid system is understandably called the heart of the rotary oil drilling rig. Any other type of rotary rig, such as the diamond drill, should benefit by the incorporation of mud fluids in the drilling scheme.

AN increase in the value of magnetostriction1 * is known to result from the annealing of some ferromagnetic alloys in a magnetic field. Similar increases may be anticipated in the value of the magnetostriction of alloys that are of interest because of their normal high values. Two were selected for trial, 87 pct Fe-13 pct Al(Fe,Al) and 69 pct Co-31 pct Fe, the latter being used as a representative of the Co-Fe alloy series. The influence of a magnetic field present during annealing is explained by the domain theory of magnetism." The field orients the domain vectors in its own direction when the alloy is at or below the Curie temperature, and holds them there until the metal is cold. During cooling the interaction stresses between neighboring grains are largely relaxed. Interaction stresses will reappear, however, if the state of magnetization of the specimen is changed in any way, and will be larger the more the new state of magnetization differs from the one existing during the magnetic anneal. In this connection the 180" reversal of a magnetization vector is not considered a change because a simple reversal does not tend to produce a change in shape of a magnetized region. The results of a preliminary investigation undertaken to explore the possibility of treating potential in sulfide mineral flotation systems as an external variable are reported in this note. Two different methods were used to assess floatability. One involved measurement of contact angles at a mineral electrode in reagent solutions, and the other involved direct measurement of flotation recoveries in a Hallimond tube flotation cell that had been modified such that mineral particles were in electrical contact with a gold electrode. Fairly good correlation between the contact angles and flotation recoveries has been obtained.
