ONE of the most important fields of investigation at the Diamond Research Laboratory in Johannesburg is concerned with improvements in metallurgical practices for the diamond mining companies, with particular reference to increased recoveries of the smaller industrial stones. Considerable work has been done on the possible application of flotation processes to the diamond industry.

About 1300 members and guests attended the Seventh Annual Mid-winter Convention of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, which was held in the Engineering Societies' Building, New York, on Feb. 19 to 21. The opening session was a joint session with the American Institute of Mining Engineers, when welding was discussed. The various phases of standardization in engineering work were discussed by President Comfort A. Adams at the Thursday morning session. Thursday afternoon was spent in visiting. Some of the guests visited the Brooklyn Navy Yards, where they inspected the power plant, shops, dry, docks, etc. ; others visited the Bell System Laboratories of the Western Electric Co. RECENTLY, much interest has been generated in materials that undergo martensitic phase transformations on straining.')' While it is undoubtedly true that a large amount of ductility can be obtained at rather high strength levels, the question of the general way in which the phase transformation affects the plane strai fracture toughness, as measured by the parameter KIC, has yet to be answered. Let us consider a material that contains a sharp crack as shown in Fig. 1, and is subjected to a tensile stress 00. In working brown iron-ore mines on the system employed at Longdale, namely, stoping from the top down, the usual procedure is to drive a succession of upraises from the lowest adit to the highest, or to the top of the deposit, as the case may be. These up-raises are usually driven 120 feet apart., along the strike of the vein,. As the work goes on, they are connected by levels, 10 feet spa* (vertically), and then serve as chutes. A transit is useless in surveying these chutes, and the writer has for several years made use of a hanging compass. An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Among the primary design factors to be considered are capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements. Establishing A Survey and Test Program To produce a final plant effluent meeting regulatory agency requirements, engineers must have background data that are accurate and representative of present and future plant operation. Operating and plant engineering departments often have available much information, including plant water quantitative and qualitative requirements, both present and future, that can be helpful in the preparation of designs of pollution control systems.

The Carr Fork mine is located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Bingham or West Mountain District, adjacent to the Bingham open pit copper mine. Applied geology at Carr Fork, by Anaconda Minerals Company personnel includes detailed geologic mapping and sampling of underground workings, logging and sampling of drill core and cuttings, and the preparation and posting of geologic maps and cross sections for geologic interpretation, ore reserve calculation, mine operations, and long range planning. Accurate and easily understood graphic recording of Carr Fork geology is essential for optimum use by operating and engineering personnel. The design and implementation of exploration, development and definition drilling programs, research into geological spatial relationships, and analysis of structural complexities of the Carr Fork deposit are a1 so integral parts of the applied geology program.

The old De Beers mine, which lies northwest of Dutoitspan mine at Kimberley, was the mine which launched Cecil Rhodes (In his historical career. It was the nucleus of the De Beers Mining Co. Ltd., formed in 1880, which later became De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Inactive for more than a half century, the De Beers Mine is being rejuvenated for a new era of operations. Both mines were on the Vooruitzicht farm owned by the De Beers brothers, who had bought it from the Orange Free State Government ten years previously for £50. Although the brothers sold it soon after the discovery of diamonds at Dutoitspan, they are remembered for having given their name to the foremost diamond mining company in the world. Diamonds worth nearly R180,000,000 have come from this ground, and more will be recovered when the mine is re-opened.

THE use of cadmium as a base for bearing metals is one of the most interesting recent developments in this field. It has caused a strong demand for cadmium and a marked rise in its price. It appeared to the authors, therefore, that the situation might be relieved for users if accept-able substitutes could be developed. A preliminary investigation has revealed that to some extent mercury may be substituted for cadmium. Whether its use is justified cannot be stated at this time. Most of the authors' work has indicated that the addition of mercury to alloys of cadmium and nickel detracts from their desirable physical properties; but this work has not been extended to cover service tests, which might reveal that the addition of low percent-ages of mercury to the cadmium-base alloys would improve their per-formance. The results of tests made by the authors are therefore briefly summarized for this paper. Table 1 gives the proportions of the metals

Exploration work in 1932 in the Rocky Mountain region, which includes the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, resulted in the discovery of one new oil field, Cut Bank in Glacier County, Montana; one new gas field, Craig in Moffat County, Colorado; and the definite outlining of a second gas field, Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, in which there had been drilled but one small gas well prior to 1932. During the year, 95 producing oil or gas wells were completed, giving new initial production amounting to 188,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 176,420 bbl. of oil per day for the region. By far the largest part of this new production of both oil and gas was developed in southeastern New Mexico, mainly the Hobbs field. However, the Dry Creek field of Carbon County, Montana, contributed over 5000 bbl. of; new oil production. Sixty-two wells were abandoned during the year but of this number only 10 promising structures were nonproductive. The remaining 52 wells had little to recommend their drilling from a structural or strati-graphical standpoint. Eighty-eight wells were suspended in the region' during 1932 before the tests had reached their individual objective horizons. Many of these suspensions were due to financial difficulties and it is possible that several of the operations may be resumed at a later date. At the close of the year, 54 wells were actively drilling, 54 were shut down and there were 20 rigs and locations in the five Rocky Mountain states. The accompanying table gives details of drilling and production.

ON account of its greater economy and cleanliness, and the extent to which iuferior fuels can be utilized for its generation, there has been of late a rapidly increasing tendency to substitute gaseous for solid fuel for metallurgical and other industrial purposes, which has led to various improvements both in the process and apparatus for its manufacture, notably among which may IN mentioned the Tessie Gas Producer* described by Mr. A. L. Holley. A considerable experience by the author with producers of various kinds using anthracite fuel, in connection with the Taylor ore-roast ing furnace at Chester, N. J., with more or less unsatisfactory resnlts, finally led to the erection of the experimental producer described below, which combines in its construction, simplicity, dorability, and accessibility for cleaning and removing the ash and manipulating the fuel. It is adapted to the use of various kinds of fuel, and is capa ble of generating a steady and uniform supply of gas at a minimum cost. It has been in constant use day and night for about five months, and has given very satisfactory results. The producer, as shown in the accompanying sketch, consists of a cylindrieal furnace, preferably inclosed in an iron jacket or casing, having a bosh or inverted cone-shaped base as in a blast furnace. It is provided with a bell and hopper, the bell being hung to a forked lever, and having guide flanges to prevent it from swing ing, and an opening at its apex through which to insert a bar for manipulating the fuel, which when not in use is closed with a plug or stopper. Cleaning is effected through two small doors placed opposite each other at the hearth level, which in order to facilitate the operation is elevated above the floor. The doors are removable, and when closed are by their own weight and by means of bevelled lugs held tightly against their frames, forming a practically tight joint.
