Jen Inc., operator of the Cord mine, in the Big Indian district of San Juan County, Utah, has a contract with a milling company that provides a small bonus for proper grading and preparation of uranium ores shipped. To obtain maximum returns on this contract very close grading is required with settlements made on individual lots, which vary from 250 to 300 tons. Another feature of the contract, and one that is rather unique in this country, is that the ore is sold over truck scales at the mine. Grade is determined at the buyer's sample plant. It is necessary to take a moisture sample of each truckload shipped for ac- curate weighing and this is done by the representative of the buyer, using facilities supplied by Jen Inc. The sample is hardly more than a grab sample and includes only the finer and smaller pieces of the ore shipped.

Montreal, April 6-7. "Resilient" and "bullish" were the terms used by R. D. Mushlitz of Asarco and K. C. Hendrick of Noranda Sales Corp. respectively, to describe the near term prospects for lead and zinc. The two men delivered their predictions at a joint meeting of the Lead Industries Association and the Zinc Institute held here. In speaking before a packed audience, Mushlitz insisted that "the lead industry is far from the sedentary one which many would have us believe, and although it may be slow and tortuous at times, . . . it is a viable and progressive industry which won't give up easily to the various pressures. . . . and, in the long run, will prevail."

THE fifth annual convention of coal-operating men, with the usual exposition of coal-mine equipment, was held at Cincinnati, May 7 to 11 inclusive, and was fully up to the high standard set by previous years. This spring meeting has come to be one of the most helpful services to industry performed by the Ameri-can Mining Congress and a center at which operators and engineers easily and quickly get into touch with the newest and best things in practice and equipment. Over 200 exhibitors showed this year and very little if anything that is new `failed to be shown. The ex-hibits were well arranged and adequate rather than elaborate. They attracted the careful attention of the members and guests of the Congress, admission being by badge rather than by ticket sold to, the general public. Open pit mining at Inspiration began in 1947 after 32 years of underground mining. Two separate pits are included in the operations: the Thornton pit, which measures approximately 2500 x 2000 ft, and the Live Oak pit, which is 1500 x 3000 ft. The geographic centers of the two pits are approximately 4000 ft apart, and at the closest point, the two slopes are only 500 ft apart. Today, much of the open pit mining is being carried out in areas which were broken by earlier underground block caving operations; less than 50% of the total material moved has required drilling and blasting. In the solid or virgin areas, the, material ranges only from soft to medium hardness, thus simplifying drilling, blasting and loading operations. As a result, most mining costs and problems have been centered around truck haulage, truck maintenance and the ever-increasing length of the grade haul.

The discovery of oil in the Powder Wash stricture in northwestern Colorado late in the fall of 1936 is the most important development in Colorado since oil was first discovered in the Moffat dome in the same county in 1923. The Powder Wash structure gives promise of developing into an oil and gas field of major proportions and is of particular interest because the oil was found in Tertiary rocks of Eocene age, which heretofore had been productive in the Rocky Mountain region of gas only, and very few of the many structures of this kind have been tested because it was believed that oil production probably would be confined to rocks of Cretaceous age only, and these were, in most instances, at excessive drilling depths. The National Labor Board, on June 25, ended its activities preparatory to final, dissolution by the President. No new cases will be heard nor new applications received. Controversies, jointly submitted, that could not be concluded prior to June 30, were assigned to the joint chairmen or a section of the board for disposition. The conclusion of the board's activities marks the passing of. one of the governmental agencies created during the war to further production of war materials. The board was organized under a Presidential proclamation with former President Taft and Frank P. Walsh of Kansas City as joint Chairmen, and with five members representing labor, five employers' representatives, and two members acting for the public. Mr. Walsh resigned soon after the signing of the armistice and was succeeded by Basil M. Manly of Washington. During the year that ended May 31, the hoard received 1245 cases, made awards in 462 cases, dismissed 391 for various cases, referred 315 to specified agencies, and suspended one case. Fifty-three cases remained on the docket because the hoard could not agree, and 23 cases were pending.

This paper states that progress in blast-furnace engineering during the past five years is unimportant except for the advent of the electric precipitator for gas cleaning. It describes improvements in certain furnace details and in materials of construction. The paper is largely given over to a discussion of difficulties in operation due to disproportion between the diameter of the present-day furnace at the bosh and at the stock line. It is proposed to remedy this disproportion, and to restore relations in the diameter of stock line and bosh as they formerly existed, by a new method of filling. This method requires a double bell arranged to discharge towards the periphery or towards the center of the furnace. Coke is classified into two sizes, the small size going to the middle of the furnace, and the larger to the periphery along with the ore. By this means the resistance of the center of the furnace is increased, and the stock line diameter may be greatly increased. The writer believes that these modifications will result in a somewhat improved fuel economy and regularity of operation and also in a very greatly reduced production of flue dust.

A LITERATURE survey1-' of sintering metal pow-A ders and powder compacts indicates that studies have so far been confined primarily to the latter stages of sintering in relatively coarse powders. Presumably this is due to the difficult techniques associated with studies of the early stages of sintering. Recent experimental and theoretical investigationsL-" on the preparation and the magnetic properties of ultrafine ferromagnetic powders suggest the possi- bility of following the sintering process from a very much earlier stage than has previously been considered. It is now well-known that ferromagnetic powder particles which are below a critical size behave as single domains and exhibit permanent magnet qualities characterized by a very high coercive force. When the same particles are fully sintered, the coercive force decreases to very low values corresponding to those of the solid metal. Today there is unparalleled opportunity for constructive effort in the national mineral economy on the part of the Land-Grant colleges and universities. The matter is too important to be pushed aside. It is inevitable that in the aftermath of World War II, conscientious Americans the country over should want to take stock of national resources. Attention is now centered, as never before, on our mineral potentialities. Opportunities and responsibilities are unparalleled and a condition exists which will not occur for another generation. Mineral industries educators cannot pro- vide the answer without taking stock of its component parts, organizing, planning, and taking action in a real dynamic sense. The services encompassed by the various fields of mineral industries must be utilized to help in the solution of problems provided by the international emergency, the country's needs, the people's needs. Mineral industries colleges have a vital role in technical aid to backward countries through foreign student programs, especially in the Latin Americas.1 By helping them to help themselves develop and utilize their resources to the fullest, we will be helping ourselves. The regular meeting of the Trustees of United Engineering Society was called to order at 4 P. M. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1919, in the Board Room of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Engineering Societies' Building, New York. Minutes of a joint meeting of the Finance Committee of United Engineering Society with finance committees of Founder Societies on Feb. 14, were presented. The President called attention to actions relating to the recataloging of the Library and the support of Engineering Societies Employment Bureau of Engineering Council. The activity of the Employment Bureau was approved and support by the Societies informally assured. In response to a communication from the Fifth Avenue Association, the Secretary was instructed to write favoring the continuance of the daylight saving law. As to recataloging of Engineering Societies Library, it was announced that the Mining, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers had voted appropriations, as requested, and the action of the Civil Engineers was awaited. A list of applications for offices in Engineering Societies' Building, revised to Feb. 27, was read, showing requests for a total of 29 rooms. The President stated that a decision must be reached soon as to what reply shall he made to these applications. Charles F. Scott, one of the original trustees, who was present, remarked upon the growth of United Engineering Society and his satisfaction at its success. ALFRED D. FLINN, Secretary.

In a previous paper, ozone was shown to remove residual xanthates in flotation pulp solutions as well as to destroy the xanthate coating on bulk copper-nickel sulfide concentrates before differential flotation (Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985). The oxidation and decom- position mechanisms of xanthate solutions in the presence of commonly used oxidants such as oxygen, chlorine, hypochlorite, bromine, iodine, and hydrogen peroxide at different pH levels have been reported in the past (Rao, 1971). Most of these studies have been restricted to xanthate solutions of pH less than 10. Very few references are available on xanthate decomposition in highly alkaline (pH > 12) solutions (Jones and Woodcock, 1983; Philipp and Fichte, 1960; Tipman and Leja, 1975). No systematic study of xanthate oxidation by ozone has been reported, although its use in flotation has been recognized of late (Allegrini et al., IWO; Ishii et al., 1970; Matsubara et al., 1978). To improve the efficiency of ozone use in flotation, it is essential to understand the mechanisms involved in the decomposition of xanthates with ozone, more specifically, to establish the stoichiometry and decomposition rate. In the present work, a preliminary attempt was made to investigate the effect of pH on xanthate decomposition, and probable mechanisms of xanthate oxidation with ozone.

There is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and .higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiff-ness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges. Materials Used for High-silica Retorts The materials used in the manufacture of high-silica retorts at East St. Louis are fireclay, grog and silica flour. Analyses are given in Table 1. The fireclay comes from the St. Louis district. The grog consists of clean firebrick culls, and the silica flour, a very high-grade material, is purchased in the form of a flour that has been ground through 140 mesh.

The focus of attention during 1939 was on increasing the octane number of gasoline. The "octane race" resumed full swing. The averagc octane number of house-brand gasoline by the end of the year had easily reached two numbers higher, with several companies in the field actually purveying house-brand gasoline of 78-80 "research" octane number, equivalent roughly to from 74 to 77 A.S.T.M. octane rating, compared with the 70 A.S.T.M. ceiling of two or more years ago. Whether this trend toward much higher octanes is the result or the cause of the many t,echnical developments in the motor-fuel field of recent, years, progress has really been startling. In addition to the advance in catalytic cracking and catalytic re-forming, other important contributions to the technical ability to produce higher octane values include: installat>ions involving increased capacity in thermal re-forming, with improved economic status both as to yields and octane number, by coupling with catalytic polymerization; more widespread adoption of catalytic and thermal polymerization, and a surge toward extensive installations of newly developed alkylation processes for making iso-octane, neo-hexanr and other high antiknock products; and greater use of improved desul-phurization processes, and application of superfractionation methods for segregation of practically pure hydrocarbons with superior octanr qualities from gas and highly volatilc liquids. The approaching of practical limits in the use. of tetracthyl lead (t,hr well-known "law of diminishing returnsn coming into the picture at the higher octane levels being approached) has given impetus to development of the methods listed above. THE spitzlutte, as described by Rittinger, is an instrument by which sand is sorted in a continual upward-flowing stream of water. Its usual form is that of a pointed box, placed with the point downward, the box receiving its feed of sand and water on one side and discharging its tailings on the other. The sorted product or concentration is discharged at the bottom, at the apex of the box, through which it falls against an upward current -of water, which current serves to effect the sorting and separation. To make this exposure to the quicksand condition still more effective, an inverted dam is placed across the spitzlutte, which forces the sand in its passage from the feed side to the discharge to pass down into the more active portion of the upward-flowing current of water. In the form adopted for small tests in the mining laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (see accompanying sketch) the feed is through a central funnel instead of being at the side, and the apex of this funnel, extending down nearly to, the apex of the cone, takes the place of the inverted dam in the large spitzlutte. To keep the experiment perfectly under control a bulb or bottle is attached by a rubber connecting-tube to receive the concentrations, and between this bottle and the apex of the spitzlutte is placed -1 glass tube of conical form, with a side tube for the admission of water. By regulating the admission of water through this tube the concentration may be allowed to go down into the bulb as fast or as slowly as the richness of the ore seems to demand. This spitzlutte may be used on products that have been previously sized to take out the heavy mineral. As, an example of this a test was made upon a' sample of ore where the galena, blende, and quartz were much mixed up, but separated fairly when crushed. The sample of ore was from Newburyport, and assayed 16.50 per cent. lead.. After sizing through a series of sieves the ore yielded concentrations and tailings to the spitzlutte as follows
