In spite of the "hard times" some of the leading supply houses did more business this year in this district than in any year since 1920.

THE Getchell mine is a comparatively recent discovery in the old Potosi mining district, Humboldt County, Nevada, a district organized in the seventies and eighties, in which some prospecting was done in several metamorphic zones along a monzonite-sedimentary contact. The district had no production in the early days and no further work was done until the same metamorphic zones were prospected for tungsten (scheelite) in 1917 and 1918, when a few small lots were shipped. It again lay dormant until 1934, when prospectors investigated a large siliceous escarpment at one end of the old district where outcroppings were a prominent feature of the topography. Undoubtedly, during the early prospecting of the district, the outcroppings had been investigated for mineral, probably by panning, with negligible results because the gold later found is invisible in the concentrate and is refractory. A fire assay revealed the presence of sufficient gold to warrant develop-ment work. The outcroppings were easily prospected by short tunnels having their portals in the siliceous material on the hanging-wall side, with a maximum distance to crosscut to the footwall of 135 ft., or a distance at right angle to dip of 60 to 90 ft. Development work, reaching a depth of over 600 ft. on the dip of the vein, was done by means of various crosscut tunnels, winzes and laterals. A churn-drill hole was also sunk, which intersected the vein at a depth of 1100 ft. on the dip. Sufficient development work of this character was completed by 1937 to justify the erection of a reduc-tion plant to roast the sulphide ore and cyanide the calcine, and to treat the oxidized ore by straight cyanidation, to make a doré bullion for shipment to the mint. The erection of the plant was started that year and finished early in 1938, with a combined capacity of about 800 tons per day. It has operated continuously since erection and recently was enlarged to handle 1000 tons per day. The vein dips with the slope of the mountain, and by stripping the hanging wall the ore may be mined by power shovel for several hun-dred feet below the outcrop. Thereafter underground methods will be necessary.

AN electronic data-processing system is described which permits rapid, accurate, low-cost processing of strain-dependent damping data utilizing equipment normally available within the service facilities of most large laboratories. On analyzing the record of a stress-dependent damping test, the operator usually measures the double amplitudes at several points on the decay curve. The logarithmic decrement is then calculated for decay between consecutive amplitudes. These values of 6 are plotted against the corresponding maximum surface shear stress, T, which is proportional to the average of the two amplitudes between which is calculated: where d is the specimen diameter. The period of the vibration is not necessarily constant during decay; thus, each cycle must be counted. A decay curve may extend to, perhaps, 1000 cycles, and at least two curves are always obtained for each specimen or set of conditions. It can, therefore, be seen that manual analysis of decay curves is both tedious and costly in terms of man-hours. Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

The Tilly Foster iron-mine is situated in the southeastern part of Putnam County, New York, about fifty miles north of New York City, on the line of the New York City and Northern Railroad. There are a number of deposits of magnetite scattered throughout the county, the most important being those known as the Tilly Foster, the Mahopac, and the deposits of the Croton Magnetic Ore Company. (See the paper of Mr. Wendt, Transactions, xiii., 478.)

Man has always felt more comfortable breaking his life into categories or classifications. An otherwise bewildering life somehow becomes easier to bear when divided into neat measurable sections, each of which is fitted into its proper niche. It seems likely that the world's first economic geologist, when faced with the world's first two ore bodies, started his career by classifying them. Early on, he divided his ore bodies into those born of water, of fire, and of air. In retrospect this threefold classification was probably about as useful as the more complex ones that followed. This division of ore bodies probably did not help him in his search for new deposits, but it made him feel more secure in dealing with those already known.

Data on worldwide geophysical activity in application to mining exploration programs is collected annually as part of a continuing service to the mining and petroleum industries. The data for mining geophysical activity in 1966 has been made available to SME by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. This data is based on 288 voluntary responses for a return of 59% to 487 questionnaires that were circulated among worldwide mining companies, universities, and government institutions that conduct or utilize mining geophysical surveys or carry out allied research efforts. This data is herein published in condensed form with the permission of the SEG.

The electrical resistivity method was utilized at 245 road cuts and structure sites over the 166 miles of the Philadelphia and Western Extensions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike System. Varying geologic structures and rock types afforded an excellent academic study of the method as well as a practical application to modern highway engineering.

Anelastic measurements of atomic mobility in an Ag-Zn substitutional solid solution, make possible a study of the rate of decay of lattice defects frozen into the alloy by quenching. A WIDE variety of experimental evidence has accumulated recently in support of the belief that atomic mobility or diffusion in face-centered cubic lattices occurs principally through the movement of lattice defects, as contrasted to a mechanism by which two or more atoms directly exchange lattice positions. The most direct evidence, summarized in a recent review,' includes the Kirkendall-effect measurements and anelastic measurements on quenched alloys. Theoretical calculations' have focused attention on the lattice vacancy as the defect probably responsible for diffusion in the common metals. Later calculations3 have also shown the possible importance of combined pairs of vacancies in producing diffusion. The only defect that has been considered seriously, in addition to the vacancy and combination of vacancies, is the "interstitialcy" (an atom which has left its normal lattice position and entered an interstitial position) ; the calculated energy of formation of an interstitialcy in a close-packed lattice is too large to permit a reasonable probability for the occurrence of this defect In view of these calculations it may be tentatively concluded that the defects producing atomic movements are single or multiple vacancies. Anelastic measurements of atomic mobility in substitutional solid solutions provide a valuable method for the study of lattice defects. By means of this method it was first demonstrated' that defects may be frozen into a lattice by rapid quenching from high temperatures. (It was subsequently shown6 that resistivity measurements may also be capable of detecting the presence of frozen-in defects.) A summary of the principles involved in these anelastic measurements will now be presented. The anelastic method is based on a relaxation phenomenon in substitutional solid solutions, first discovered by Zenera in a brass and subseauentlv investigated extensively in a series of Ag-zn solid solutions.' THIS paper describes the methods used to determine the rates of payment for contract work and the plan of contract supervision in the Elm Orlu mine. A discussion of the theory of wages and the eternal question-what is a just wage-are beyond the scope of this article. In the fall of 1920 the Elm Orlu was the largest mine in Butte using the day's pay system of payment for stoping operations. High labor and supply costs and a falling market for the product of the mine made economic mining difficult. The mining method had been changed from the square set stoping to timbered rilling to eliminate most of the shoveling. There was no opportunity to reduce the cost of supplies other than more rigid economy in their use. It was recognized, however, that the labor efficiency was low and that the reduction in costs depended on increasing the output per man. While in general, the low man efficiency was a resultant of the high wages paid and the shortage of men during the war and subsequent period of inflation, it was felt that the contract and bonus system used in the other mines was the main factor in that the most capable and energetic men had been attracted to those mines where more than average skill and dili-gence were recognized by more than average pay.

INTRODUCTION Since the infancy of in situ uranium mining, a growing number of hydrometallurgical processes have been incorporated into pilot and commercial scale flowsheets. Although initial design efforts were geared toward maximizing uranium recovery and minimizing plant and wellfield flow circuit maintenance, recent emphasis has shifted to improved means of water conservation and aquifer restoration. As mining units approached depletion, evaporation ponds reached minimum freeboard, and state and federal agencies demanded proof of groundwater restoration, processes including mixed bed and conventional ion exchange, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis were adopted by the industry. These units served the additional function of reducing process bleed flows during mining in states where the deep disposal well permitting ice remains unbroken. This report concerns the use of electrodialysis as an alternative to the more conventional processes used in in situ mining. In addition to a brief history and description of the process, a comparison to reverse osmosis and operational data derived from testing an Ionics, Inc. 1.31 x 10-3 m /s (30,000 gallon/day) unit at the Teton-Nedco Leuenberger Research and Development pilot will be presented. HISTORY Commercially practicable electrodialysis was contingent upon the development of synthetic ion exchange membranes in 1940's. In 1952, Ionics Inc. demonstrated that the process was amenable to the treatment of salt and brackish water and, in 1954, made their first commercial sale. The following decade saw several major electrodialysis unit sales which were generally targeted for use on private or municipal potable water treatment. Major increases in membrane desalting unit capacities, facilitated by technological advances in the reserve osmosis industry, were noted during the 1970's. The development of polarity reversing electrodialysis equipment which reduced feed pretreatment requirements, increased water recovery rates, and simplified unit operation, kept Ionics Inc. competetive in the water treatment industry. Engineering advances which incorporated automated equipment, non-corrosive construction materials, and improved ion exchange membranes allowed the electrodialysis process to compete in industrial waste treatment among other commercial markets. PROCESS AND APPARATUS DESCRIPTION The electrodialysis process utilizes direct electrical current passed across a stack of alternating cation and anion selective membranes in order to achieve an electrochemical separation of ionized materials in an aqueous solution. The membrane stack has the appearance of a plate and frame filter press and auxilliary equipment includes solution pumps, electrically actuated valves, filters, piping and a direct current power source. The ion separation membranes are thin sheets of synthetic cation or anion selective resins. Attaching sulfonate or quaternary ammonium groups to the cross linked copolymer structure determines the ion selectivity of the membrane. The membranes are separated from each other in the stack by non-conductive spacers that house flow channels which route the flow tortuously and parallel to the membranes. Direct electrical current passing perpendicularly to the membranes and solution passages attracts cations toward the cathode and anions toward the anode (Figure 1). As the ions from the feed stream pass through the ion selective membranes, they become concentrated in the adjacent brine channel and are retained there by the combined attractive force of the electrode and the repelling force of the next membrane toward the electrode. Limiting factors on the degree of demineralization possible include chemical solubilities in the brine flow and the current density that will produce an unacceptable degree of polarization (Figure 1). Feed or brine solution treatment with complexing agents or acids has been successfully applied to prevent membrane scaling. Polarization can occur when sufficient current density is applied to dissociate water in the ion depleted region of the diluting compartments near the membrane surfaces. Significant polarization is evidenced by large electrical resistances across cell pairs and notable pH differences between diluting and concentrating streams. Limiting current densities have been increased in U.S. manufactured equipment by utilizing tortuous flow paths of relatively high linear velocities thereby promoting continous solution mixing. Energy consumption is due to separating electrolytes and solutions, oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in electrode compartments, overcoming electrical resistance, conversion from AC to DC power, solution pumping and auxiliary equipment actuation. A major improvement to the basic electrodialysis process was applied in 1970 which resulted in frequent, automatic cleaning and descaling of membrane surfaces. The process, polarity reversal, incorporates alternating the cathode and anode on a periodic basis while exchanging product and brine flow channels via electrically actuated values. The reversal reduces the potential of stack plugging with CaCO3 (calcite), CaSO4 (gypsum), and colloidal materials and, in most waters, eliminates feed pre-treatment requirements. The discovery of prolific oil wells in old territory hitherto regarded as doubtful, if not worthless, and the rapid extension of a gas pool opened late in 1938 were the most interesting petroleum features in West Virginia during 1939. Oil activity in general was slow because of crude prices that were still fairly low at the end of the year, although substantially increased above those in January. Fewer oil wells were completed, but the average results were better than in 1938. Fewer gas wells, also, were completed, with greatly lessened average initial production. Many old oil and gas wells were abandoned, so that the total number of active wells has not changed appreciably. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other sources, shows that 561 new wells were drilled, resulting in 101 new oil wells with 2261 bbl. of daily initial production; 366 new gas wells with 602,400,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 94 dry holes. Besides these new wells, 61 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 12 bbl. and 13,328,000 cn. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 22.38 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 1,645,900 cu. ft. per well per day; the ratio of dry holes to completions was 16.76 per cent. From an exploratory standpoint one partly discredited oil area was revived by good new production, and another small oil pool may have been opened. Some of the results in gas exploration will require more drilling for true appraisal. It is certain, though, that one very considerable gas field in the sands of Mississippian age has been proved; and there is a probability of six new pools in the Middle Devonian shale. In the Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) the Elk-Poca pool has been extended considerably farther northwest into Jackson County; and farther north in Jackson County two widely separated wells, which may be pool openers, have been successfully completed. On the other hand, several important wildcats in various counties have been dry. Stratigraphically lower, some additional wells have been completed in the Newburg sand (Sil.) and one small producer has been completed in the Clinton sand (Sil.), the importance of which can scarcely be overestimated, because no Clinton production has previously been found in the state, although at least seven wells have been drilled through the sand.

WHILE the effect of the cold-junction temperature has been known by many, its consideration has been ignored in a number of installations, resulting at tunes in a very considerable error. In fact, the magnitude of this error may amount to over 100° in some cases. Numerous methods for automatically compensating for cold-junction temperature changes of thermocouples have been proposed and used in connection with millivoltmeters. One of the earliest proposed was that shown in Fig. 1. A bare resistance wire was immersed in a column of mercury located near the cold junction of the thermocouple. An increase in temperature near the cold junction resulted in a rise of the mercury column, which short-circuited more of the resistance wire causing an increase in the potential difference across the millivoltmeter, which compensated for the decreased electromotive force of the thermocouple.
