IN this survey of the progressive development of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. PHILADELPHIA Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1853, when the Pennsylvania Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1850-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

(written discussion *).-The principle involved in the Crowe vacuum precipitation process is so elementary and the apparatus required is so simple, that the whole subject affords scant material for a technical discussion. As. one prominent Colorado metallurgist recently remarked when asked to contribute to this paper: "The Crowe process is the biggest step forward since the early clays of the cyanide process, but there is nothing to write about; just put it in your mill and try it." The writer confesses to a similar feeling, but having been closely identified with the process since its inception in 1916, he is perhaps in a position to at least comment on the theory involved and to record some of the results that have been achieved in actual practise. In practising the Crowe process, the solutions to be precipitated are first vacuumized in a suitable dispersion tower; that is, thin films of the liquid are subject to the action of a vacuum within a receiver. In the course of a return flight from Olympia, Wash., to Laramie, Wyo., an airborne magnetometer profile was recorded continuously. The level of flight was controlled at barometric levels along segments of the flight. Barometric altitude was changed from 3000 ft to a maximum of 12,000 ft above mean sea level to take care of topographic variations. Terrain clearance varied from 800 to 7300 ft. Horizontal positions were obtained by recording and tying to cities, towns, airports, river crossings, and other landmarks in the course of the flight. Figs. 1-6 show the course of the flight and the general geologic and tectonic features traversed. The flight line begins south of Olympia, Wash., and proceeds south across the Puget-Willemette depression to the Columbia River. Thence it proceeds eastward along the Washington-Oregon border across the Cascade Mts. and lava flows and the Umatilla basin to Pendleton, Ore. From Pendleton it traverses the Blue Mts. uplift of Oregon in a southeasterly direction, and then to the Boise basin of southwestern Idaho. The flight line swings in an easterly direction as it passes over the Snake River downwarp to the south of the Idaho batholith. It then passes over the northern portion of the Great Basin and the heavily overthrust area at the intersection of the Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming borders. The flight then assumes an easterly course to cross the series of basins and uplifts of southern Wyoming and terminates near the western flank of the Laramie uplift.

Exploration for metallic mineral deposits is carried on by those special adaptations of methods which the explorer believes will yield most economically or satisfactorily the particular answer sought. In this project the usual methods of geologic observation, recording, and interpretation, when combined with magnetic geophysical methods and geochemical soil sampling, led to disclosures of appreciable zinc mineralization where none was visible in surface exposure. Since 1945 considerable work has been done with geochemical prospecting methods, chiefly in determining the presence and distribution of various elements existing in minor amounts in rocks, soil, vegetation or waters of mineralized areas. Such work, in which the U. S. Geological Survey has taken the lead, finds a ready place in the field repertoire of the exploration geologist as a supplement, not a substitute, for other methods. The Chollet project was carried out in 1951 by the American Smelting & Refining Co. near its Van Stone mine in northern Stevens County, Wash., in the area shown in Fig. 1

INTRODUCTION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is a relatively low-cost instrument developed by Hawkes and Bailey (1973) and was originally intended to monitor stress changes in mine pillars subjected to uniaxial stress changes. In this regard, this instrument has found considerable use by the mining industry. More recently, there have been attempts to use the stressmeter for determination of more general changes of the in situ rock stress. This paper reports on a study to characterize the performance of the rigid inclusion stressmeter for this application and presents results on the effect of anisotropic stress changes. These stress changes must be accounted for to properly analyze general changes of the in situ rock stress. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is an instrument designed to measure variations of the in situ stress around a borehole. The stressmeter studied in this work, is manufactured by Irad Gage, Div. Creare Products, Inc. Lebanon, New Hampshire. It consists of a stiff hollow steel gage body that is preloaded across a borehole diameter. The preloading is activated by sliding a wedge between an upper platen and the gage body. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the subject of Stress-Corrosion Cracking at the Joint Symposium of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. In this Symposium we are concerned with spontaneous cracking which results from the combined effect of high, prolonged stress, and corrosive attack. Stress-corrosion cracking may be considered a specific phase of the more general subject of the effect of high constant stresses in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metal products. The kindred subject of corrosion fatigue in which the life of a metal part under repeated stresses is reduced by corrosive attack is not a part of this Symposium. Likewise "creep," the failure of a metal part by high constantly applied stress, in the absence of a corrosive environment, is not to be included. How- ever, corrosive influences may have more effect on creep failures than is sometimes realized. The penetration by molten metals such as often occurs during tinning or soldering operations, or by mercury, frequently causes cracking when the part is stressed. Strictly speaking this is not stress-corrosion cracking. However, the committee has decided that this phenomenon should be included in the Symposium. THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

BEHIND the contrasting liquid-fuel technologies of Germany and the United States lie the basic differences of scarcity and abundance. The chemists and engineers of each nation have developed processes that accommodate available raw materials. In the United States, processing is based on an abundant supply of petroleum, which is refined into a variety of fuels and lubricants. Germany has little indigenous petroleum but has a readily available supply of coal that can be converted into liquid fuels and lubricants. As a result, in Germany several basic processes have been developed for the conversion of coal into synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). In turn, this gas is processed into products. As a normal function of its researches into petroleum processing, the petroleum industry in the United States has made careful studies of various conversion and synthesis techniques. A number of oil companies are carrying out independent development programs with the aim of synthesizing hydro- carbon products that can be marketed at a price that will compete with the price of refined petroleum products. American oil companies hope to perfect synthesis processes that will directly benefit the consumer. A good example of progress in these terms is the synthesis plant at Brownsville, Texas, which is based on the conversion of natural gas to synthetic fuels and other valuable products. When this plant is operated at near capacity, it is expected that the products will be able to compete favorably for the consumer dollar. The complete gasification of coal is a technique well rooted in history. As a controlled process on a small scale, it goes back centuries. As a practical technique on a commercial scale, it dates back to 1839, when "producer gas" appeared in Germany for limited industrial use. By 1873, "water gas," or "city gas" as it is sometimes called, was being manufactured commercially in the United States for use in heaters and stoves. The water-gas process was the cornerstone for modern synthesis. To older methods that were concerned only with carbon and oxygen reactions, it added hydrogen by means of steam. Thus far the goal of conversion was to produce gas for heating, lighting, industrial use, and cooking. The long step forward to synthesis was made in 1927, when Germany started to make gasoline from coal by means of the revolutionary Bergius hydrogenation process. Kansas, with its thin seams and tough overburden, may not be anyone's first choice for a coal mining operation. But there are operators making it pay through careful attention to mining techniques and aggressive marketing in the local region. One of the few Kansas coal operators is Bill Patch, who has been in the business for 28 years. Beginning with a single dragline operation near his home in Welch, Okla., Bill's Coal Co. weathered some lean times during the "soft" coal market of the 1950's and 1960's. But his tenacity paid off when new markets began opening up, and the company has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. In 1975, the Fort Scott mine opened in Bourbon County, Kansas; in 1976, the Porter mine began production in Wagoner County, Okla.; in 1977, the Fulton mine opened near Fulton, Kansas. In addition, the original Welch mine in Oklahoma is still a producer, and this year the company will open a new mine at Chetopa, Kansas.

MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles, in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the intrusives, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust[1], these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure.

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

WHEN a single crystal is annealed following plastic deformation recrystallization usually occurs rather than polygonization. Consequently, re-crystallization has received the overwhelming amount of attention albeit the intrinsic mechanisms by which dislocations rearrange and annihilate one another are just as well revealed by crystal polygonization. It is the purpose of this note to demonstrate the usefulness of studying the polygonization process by means of an etch-pit technique in sodium chloride. Sodium chloride deforms easily (the slip system is of the [110], (110) type), readily cleaves on (100) planes, and can be chemically etched so as to reveal the intersection of dislocations with a free surface. Thus it is possible to observe the distribution of dislocations after a crystal has undergone a specific deformation and annealing cycle. Various phases of the polygonization process

IT is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide. application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and. establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment.

Aggregated models of a bank of flotation cells have frequently been used, assuming that a single-cell model can be used for control and estimation purposes. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of this approach, and show that single-cell aggregated models may very well be used in order to estimate the aggregated net flotation rate constants of the bank. These estimates would usually be very crucial in order to control the plant.
