AT THE beginning of May the German government offered to the French and Belgians the payment of 30 billion .gold marks as indemnity, accom-panied by rather involved terms, among which was the ability of the Germans to finance the foreign loan. This offer was promptly and summarily refused by the French and Belgians. Since then there have been more palavers between the two parties, while the occupation of the Ruhr continued without especial incident, except some socialist riots and workmen's strikes. The renewed conference between the Allies and the Turks at Lausanne continued, without apparently getting anywhere. The Turks demanded an indemnity from the Greeks, which the latter refused to pay, threatening a resumption of hostilities rather than to do so. A. Bonar Law, the British premier, resigned his office soon after the middle of May, owing to poor health. The King appointed Stanley Baldwin as his successor. This. Attainment to the premiership of Great Britain by a business man is a noteworthy event. It is, moreover, to be remarked that Mr. Baldwin is personally acquainted with America and is well known to be a friend to Americans. The Irish rebellion came to an end. Economically there was some improvement in the situation in Great Britain during May, which was reflected in diminution in the number of unemployed. Nevertheless the aggregate of the unemployed in Great Britain continues at a very high figure. In Germany there has been an increase in the number of unemployed ever since the French occupation of the Ruhr, which naturally has been choking German industry. Previous to this the percentage of unemploy-ment among German workers had been low ever since the Armistice. A noteworthy domestic event was the non-stop flight of an airplane, May 2-3, bearing two aviators from New York to San Diego, California, in about 27 hours.

Optimum design of a structure obviously requires a thorough knowledge of the materials to be utilized in its construction. When the structure is a tunnel, a most important element in its design and construction is the geology. As a tunnel may be many miles in length and at depths of hundreds or thousands of feet, we face a real problem to meet the needs of the designer and builder. How can we determine the properties of our construction materials in this situation? Engineering geology has had a formidable challenge to meet the requirements of conventional excavation methods; the advent of machine methods for rapid excavation compounds the requirements for more detailed and more precise geological knowledge of the tunnel site. This chapter will discuss the means now at our disposal to meet the challenge to produce the required data on the tunnel site in the preconstruction stage. Our considerations will be directed towards construction of a free-flow tunnel, primarily in fractured rock formations, without any requirements for the rock mechanics type of in-situ tests that might be made for a pressure tunnel or for a large opening for an underground power plant. In essence the investigation must determine: (1) The geologic conditions affecting the type of construction equipment and excavation method of the rock to be broken and removed. (2) The quantities of water and gas to be encountered. (3) The strength and stability of the material surrounding the bore and its need for support and lining. GEOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING TUNNEL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The engineer or contractor may classify the rock as either competent or incompetent or more pointedly as "good" or "bad" ground. The oxidation behaviors of simple and complex chloride systems of copper, iron, nickel, cobalt, and manganese in a stream of oxygen were investigated using a thermogravimetric analysis technique. Their reaction mechanisms are discussed from stoichiometry, thermodynamic feasibility, and X-ray diffraction analysis of reaction products. The results are used to determine an optimum operating temperature of the selective oxidation step in a chlorination process for producing nonferrous metal chlorides, elemental sulfur, and ferric oxide from copper-nickel sulfide flotation concentrates.

Viewed from the standpoint of an economist, the task which faces the petroleum producing industry is one of intelligent adjustment so that technology can perform the job of efficient exploitation, while at the same time the interests of producers and consumers remain adequately protected. The crux in the task of making this adjustment lies in the difficulty of arranging the instrumentalities of production to accord with the physical characteristics of oil. For example, oil is exploited under a competitive economic system based on private ownership and contract, with the hope that profits will attract capital and enterprise, and with competition supposedly acting as the regulative factor. Whether such a scheme of industrial organization works is partially dependent upon the ability of the producer to withold or produce his commodity as he sees fit, in accordance with market demand. But in the oil industry, the enterpriser does not have complete control over the expansion and contraction of production, for, because of the decisions of the courts that ownership in oil depends upon its possession, desire for immediate output becomes the controlling force in production. Consequently, the theoretical commands and restraints of free enterprise are not operative because there is no security of property, and the result is loss due to the following economic maladjustments: (1) Production not completely responsive to price control. (2) Production at excessive cost. (3) Loss of oil, a highly exhaustible natural resource. If economic maladjustments are to be eliminated, there should be a change in the organization of production so as to provide efficient exploitation of the oil and at the same time to insure individual property interests. The latter is necessary if economic considerations are to become primary factors in regulating production. In Gila County, Ariz., the Jaquays Mining Co. still finds the mining of asbestos a worthwhile and economical venture. At a time when domestic productive capacity is being reduced because of rapidly rising costs and tough environmental dust standards, this firm has dramatically brought its mine and mill operation into full productive capacity and compliance with both Federal and State regulations. Jaquay's Mining Corp. owns four underground mines in the Tonto National Forest, located approximately 32 miles north of the Globe-Miami District in Arizona. Only one mine, the El Dorado, is presently active. It mines an estimated 45,000 tpy of ore and waste. From this figure about 3000 tpy of fiber (No. one crude to Grade 4T) and fiberized shorts (No, seven) are recovered at the firm's mill, located in Globe, Ariz. Based on current ore reserves, the El Dorado mine has an estimated life between 15 to 17 years, assuming current mining rates and stable market conditions.

ACCORDING to Hanemann1 the hardness of retained austenite in a 1.7 pct C steel is increased by subsequent tempering. He reported that the hardness of this constituent increases only slightly on tempering to 300°F, rises more rapidly above this temperature, and attains the same value as the tempered martensite present in steel at approximately 480°F. The variation of hardness of both retained austenite and martensite with tempering temperature as obtained by Hanemann1 is shown in Fig. 1. Hanemann attributes the increase in hardness of the retained austenite essentially to continued formation of fine needles of martensite on tempering. Although he did not explain the actual mechanism involved, work hardening of retained austenite by the plastic deformation associated with such martensite formation appeared to be a possibility. Recently Lement, Averbach, and Cohen2 reported the existence of subgrains, about l000Å in diameter, in retained austenite and suggested that they may be delineated by a subboundary carbide. This raised the possibility that carbide precipitation might be responsible for the hardening reported by Hanemann. In view of these conflicting possibilities, an investigation" was carried out on a high purity, Fe-C alloy containing 1.7 pct C in order to clarify the nature of the phenomenon involved in the reported hardening of retained austenite. This investigation involved correlation of changes in microhardness and microstructure of the austenite as a result of tempering. Microhardness tests were made with a Tukon tester using a 25 gram load and a Vickers diamond. It was found that two groups of austenite hardness values were obtained after tempering at a series of temperatures up to 450°F, which was the highest temperature at which retained austenite regions could be identified microscopically. Many proposals have recently been made regarding the broadening of engineering education, often with little consideration of the problems their application involves. The chief purpose of this paper is to point out how many and how complex are the questions that absolutely must be answered, in any conscientious effort to solve the problem of liberalizing engineering curricula. Among proposed additions, more training than is now given has been urged in public speaking, report writing, business law and contra s, general finance, money and banking, scientific management, gene ' economics, economic and financial history, social problems, labor pre lems, public ownership, psychology and similar related subjects. T urge in this direction is widespread and persistent. In discussing the blem, the following questions must be given careful consideration, an he absolutely definite conclusion reached: 1. The Present Curriculum Load.—Is this load actually too heavy? In the face of this load, is there room to add broadening subjects to our curricula? Can elimination of present subject matter make room for such additions? Can an elective system accomplish the desired end? 2. Problem of Early Specialization.—Is early specialization a weak ness? Is industry forcing early specialization? Do our varied degrees demand early specialization? Can broadening be harmonized with the present degree of specialization? 3. Graduate Work to Solve the Broadening Problem.—Can we add the desired work in the graduate school? Are the proposed additions of graduate caliber? Is it desired to reduce graduate standards? Can present undergraduate work be removed to the graduate school, to make room for desired broadening courses? Is graduate work normally broadening, or is it specialization ? 4. Importance of Proposed Additions.—Will they increase entrance salaries? Will they increase the engineer's efficiency? Will they raise

FOUR liquids are ordinarily present in the lead blast furnace during lead smelting. At the bottom is the lead bullion, which is metallic lead containing about one per cent of impurities, including gold, silver, copper, bismuth, arsenic and antimony. Above this is the speiss, which consists essentially of arsenides and antimonides of iron and copper. The speiss is followed by the matte, which consists principally of sulfides of iron, copper and lead1. The top layer is the slag, of which the major constit-uents are silica, lime, alumina, zinc oxide and iron oxide. Similar products are obtained from the dross furnace, which treats the dross obtained in decopperizing lead bullion. The distribution of gold and silver among these various products is of considerable importance in the smelting of lead. In general, the matte and speiss cannot be treated in the lead smelter, and usually are sent to a copper smelter. It is usually desirable, therefore, to keep their gold and silver contents as low as possible, and to collect the precious metals in the bullion. If the bullion, speiss, matte and slag exist together in equilibrium, the gold and silver should distribute themselves among these four liquids in a definite manner, which, other conditions being equal, should depend only on the amounts of gold and silver in the charge to the furnace. It is thus apparent that a knowledge of whether such equi-librium exists is necessary before attempting to study the effects of various compositions of matte and speiss on the distribution of gold and silver among the furnace products2. Moreover, systems consisting of four liquids in equilibrium are very rare, and are of considerable scientific interest.

DURING 1910, crude-oil production in the United States reached a record level averaging about 3.700,000 barrels daily. Export declined sharply while imports increased with the result that large quantities of crude oil were run to storage during the year. Imports consisted largely of residual fuel oil brought in from South America bit because of a shortage of that product in this country and of Mexican crude. The price of petroleum products followed the declining trend of the last three year resulting in serious disparity between crude and product prices. This condition was aggravated in some areas by the increasing production of distillate by recycling operations and by the high tanker rates prevalent in the last two months of the year. As a result two small purchasers found it necessary to reduce crude-oil price in the Corpus Christie area of Texas.

Thermal expansions and heats of reaction of three typical sandstones were measured in the temperature range of 25°to 1,000°C. The significance of these data in subsurface heat-transfer calculations is discussed. Linear thermal expansions were measured both parallel and perpendicular to the bedding planes. Volume expansions are reported as the perpendicular expansion plus two times the parallel expansion. Expansion behavior of the sandstones was found to be controlled by the expansion characteristics of the quartz content. Differential expansion of the quartz grains and other minerals included in the sandstones caused permanent deformation of the heated samples after they were cooled to room temperature. Structural damage resulting from heating is probably an important cause of the reduction of thermal conductivity of heated samples. Measurements of heats of reaction were based on the known heat required for a- quartz inversion. Thermal reactions, which probably include deby-droxylation of clay minerals and decomposition of carbonate minerals contained within the samples, were found to require more than one-fourth of the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of the rock alone. In shales and limestones, the reaction heat could be substantially greater than that required from specific heat considerations alone. INTRODUCTION In earlier work, l-3 methods of measuring thermal properties were developed and thermal data for several sedimentary-rock types were reported. Data included thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal diffusivity. In addition, calculations of heat transfer in subsurface formations may require data on the thermal-expansion characteristics of rock and the heats of reaction of mineral constituents. Thermal expansion of rocks is relatively small in magnitucle and, from the standpoint of change in bulk density, has only minor effects on heat-transfer cliaracteristics. Thermal-expansion behavior, however, may have significant effects on the structure of rocks. Differential expansion of different minerals and along different crystal-lographic axes may result in structural damage which could effectively reduce the thermal conductivity of the rock. Many mineral constituents of sedimentary rocks undergo phase or related changes when heated to sufficiently high temperatures. Although some of these reactions (such as the a-ß quartz inversion) are reversible and the heat absorbed is returned to the system upon cooling, many of the major reactions are irreversible. Through certain temperature ranges, the additional heat energy required to complete the reactions may be nearly as great as that necessary to raise the temperature of the rock in the absence of thermal reactions. If the heat requirements for these reactions are not considered, serious errors in heat-transfer calculations may result. Thermal-tzxpansion and thermal-reaction data have been obtained for three typical sandstones. Methods of measurement and results obtained are reported and discussed in the following. THERMAL EXPANSION OF SANDSTONES The linear expansions of three outcrop sandstones (Bandera, Berea and Boise) have been measured in the temptbratue range of 25° to 1,000° C. Expansion measurements were made in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the bedding. The differential expansion apparatus used is that described by Mitoff and Pask.4 The test sample is heated in an electric furnace with a temperature rise of 6°C/minute. The lengthening of the samples upon heating is compared with the small and known expansion of a fused silica rod. The change in length is transmitted to an X-Y recorder by means of a Statham transducer. A maximum error of ± 1.5 per cent has been obtained with this apparatus

To help in the search for new deposits, exploration "lessons" will be drawn from the papers given at the Fall AIME Applied Geology Symposium. In addition, examples will be re-emphasized to show how early observation of matters now routine to mine work (for example, hydrology, rock mechanics, oxidation state) can help increase the effectiveness of exploration.

INTRODUCTION Considerable progress has been achieved with long- wall mining in recent years especially in enabling increased rates and levels of output to be gained, higher standards of safety and increased usage of advanced technological developments. Longwall mining also has major long term advantages, prominent amongst which is general minimisation of the effects of pillars and room intersections giving rise to future instability problems as can be the case with room and pillar mining operations. The fact that longwall mining is not presently limited by depth below surface inclination of seams or thickness of seam to be worked strengthens its position as the most popular underground mining method for extracting coal seams in Europe. Its wider application in North America and Australia can give rise to significant economic benefits coupled with higher levels of safety and recovery of coal. This present paper reviews recent progress achieved and draws attention to the more important factors influencing longwall mine design and layout. LONGWALL STRATA PRESSURE ABUTMENTS A longwall gives rise to major redistribution of strata pressures. The roof behind a longwall is normally allowed to cave and permit subsidence of the overlying strata and eventually giving rise to a trough depression at the surface. Consequently, reestablishment of strata loading within the caved region behind the longwall depends upon effective caving and subsequent recompaction. This requires sufficient depth pressure and/or adequate width of extraction in relation to the depth to achieve breaking of overlying roof beds necessary to reload the extracted region. Figure 1 shows results of an analysis carried out by Whittaker and Singh (1979) indicating the pattern of redistribution of vertical stress around a longwall in the plane of the seam. The analysis represents the average depth of longwall working in the UK, and was performed using a stress balance assumption of compatibility before and after mining. Drilling in Missouri in 1945 dropped slightly from the preceding year. The only notable development was that in the Ballard area in Bates County, where a number of farmers drilled private gas wells with an average depth of a little more than 30o feet. Table 1 gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 36,186 ft. of which 20,489 ft. was by cable tools and 15,697 ft. by rotary tools.

Abstract- The use of a unique class of sulfhydryl collectors, the monoalkyldithiocarbamate salts ([RNHCS]) as direct collectors for malachite and azurite is presented. Microflotation and laboratory scale flotation tests were performed to define the collector properties of these reagents under a variety of flotation conditions. On the basis of the results, it is proposed that some property of the amine-hydrogen atom in the reagent has a significant influence on the unusual activity of these collectors for oxide copper minerals.
