The phase diagram of the Zr-H system over the range 0 to 65 atomic pet was determined by high temperature X-ray diffraction methods. Results show a eutectoid between a zirconium and the hydride phase. The eutectoid temperature was established at 560±10°C with a eutectoid composition of 42*3 atomic pet H. The hydride phase of the lowest hydrogen content is stable only above the eutectoid temperature, but is formed and retained in a metastable state during reaction of zirconium with hydrogen at temperatures below 560°C. One hydride phase is indicated that exists over the composition range 55 to 65 atomic pet H. RECENT increase in the industrial importance of zirconium has stimulated several investigations of the reaction of zirconium with hydrogen. Review of the literature on interpretation of absorption isotherms' ' shows that attempts were made to relate the observations to the room temperature hydride phases reported by Hagg.3 However, more recently Schwartz and Mallett' reported the existence of a new hydride phase, isomorphous with the lower hydride in the Hf-H system described by Sidhu.4 This phase was found adjacent to the metal in a diffusion gradient sample. Events of the mid-1970s have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in deregulation activity. Those two events have produced considerable litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

The object of the Bradley process is to free manganese oxide from its associated gangue and separate the contained iron oxide by dissolving the manganese and precipitating it from the solution. This results in producing two oxides as concentrates, the one to be converted into a manganese sinter and the other into an iron sinter. The manganese sinter may be made to contain as high as 70 per cent. inanganese and as low as 1 per cent. silica, with phos'phorus not to exceed 0.02 per cent, and from that figure downward to about 0.005 per cent., and with sulfur at 0.007 per cent. The iron sinter contains about 2.50 per cent. manganese, making the total recovery of the manganese 98 per cent. The method involves selective roasting, which converts the manganese into a form in which it is soluble in an aqueous solution of ammonium sulfate, then precipitating the manganese as a hydrate by using ammonia gas, then stabilizing and washing the hydrate, followed by sintering; concurrently most of the iron oxide is converted by roasting into an insoluble form and becomes a residue with magnetic qualities, which makes possible the recovery of much of the iron in the ore. Leaching manganese by using sulfur dioxide gas was shown possiblc Inany years ago. Mr. Bradley tried it for a year, working in conjunction with the original experimenters of that method, and found that while relatively pure inanganese oxide could be produced, the likelihood of developing a commercial process along this line was not very encouraging. He also attempted leaching with nitric and sulfur acids, but the cost of recovery mounted and the quality of the product was not as good Mr. Bradley tried nearly every leaching method proposed, and the expen-ments were made on a large scale in the spacious laboratories of John C. Wiarda & Co., in Brooklyn, N. Y. Insufficient encouragement was discernible in the results obtained. Upon the suggestion of N. Arthur Laury, of John C. Wiarda & Co., Bradley undertook using arnrnoniurn sulfate. Because a high rate of recovery appeared feasible, Bradley planned the erection of a 4-ton pilot plant at the State of Minnesota Mines Experiment Station, at Minneapolis. The results of that work are described in this treatise.

ANEW method for concentrating the flake mica either from present washing plant tailings or from new feed has been developed. In this paper, flake mica refers to that which occurs in weathered granites, alaskites, pegmatites, and schists in a form too fine to be considered sheet mica. It ranges in size from 1 in. or more down to 200-mesh or finer and occurs with kaolin, quartz, and partially kaolinized feldspar. Scrap mica, a term often used indiscriminately to describe everything other than sheet mica, will be used to denote the waste product from sheet mica mines and fabricating plants. Both flake and scrap mica are used in the mica grinding plants to produce wet-ground or dry-ground mica, although some flake mica recovered from clay mining operations is fine enough to be marketed without grinding. Until 1930, ground mica was made almost entirely from scrap. From 1930 until 1935 a gradually increasing amount of flake mica was mined, and most of this was sold without grinding. A large percentage of this mica was recovered from clay washing plants. In this type of operation the recovery of any sheet mica was .of secondary importance and was considered a byproduct. North Carolina produces more flake mica than any other state, accounting for 73 pct of the total domestic production.' In the following review of current practice in jig plants, there is no intention to disparage these operations. Within the limitations under which they were built, they are examples of mechanical ingenuity. The term jig plant is a carryover from early practice since there are no jigs in operation at the present time. Current practice, as shown in Fig. 1, is based on successive stages of differential crushing with rolls followed by trommel screens to remove the more easily crushed gangue minerals. The oversize mica product then is usually dried, and passed through another set of dry rolls and a final screen to remove the remainder of the grit. This process is effective in recovering up to 50 pct of the mica in the original ore, the balance being lost in the screen undersize, usually —% in. Jigs and tables were at one time used to treat this screen undersize and were capable of recovering a part of the mica larger than about 60-mesh.V ine mica lost in these plants is normally washed away in streams and can be considered irrecoverable. There are ten or more washing plants in the North Carolina area that are losing approximately 50 pct of the mica in the feed. Since the three cooperating agencies, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory of North Carolina State College, the North Carolina Dept. of Conservation and Development, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, are concerned with conservation of minerals, they have investigated means for improving the efficiency of these mica plants. The mica industry has been cooperating fully with the laboratory to establish a more efficient method of recovery for flake mica. Choice of Methods The initial investigation was concentrated on finding a means of reducing the losses from plants now using the conventional flowsheet shown in Fig. 1. J. B. Seabrook' recently published properties of a low-alloy Ni-A1 age-hardening steel known commercially as "Nitralloy-N". He mentioned three possible mechanisms of age hardening, viz. order-disorder in the matrix, order -disorder in a precipitate, and a precipitate that goes in and out of solution reversibly without losing coherency. The following results indicate that the last - mentioned of these mechanisms is the cause of age hardening in Nitralloy-N. The reversibility of the age hardening with a sub-critical solution temperature was demonstrated strikingly by Seabrook, whose results are reproduced in Fig. 1. Aging for 22 hr at 975°F (525°C) can reharden the fully-tempered martensite to its original as-quenched hardness of R, 45. A Nitralloy steel was obtained from Seabrook' with the following analysis:

Although lateritic ore deposits are relatively flat-lying, surficial ore bodies, the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist. Laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain trivalent metals - principally iron and aluminum, but also, locally, nickel and manganese. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of partially altered bed rock or saprolite. Whereas bauxite generally is confined to the lateritic zone, some nickel deposits occur in both the laterite and saprolite zones. The evaluation of bauxite and lateritic nickel deposits thus has both similarities and differences. These ores have been formed by supergene, soil-forming solutions moving downward through zones of widely varying permeability within the weathering rock. Because the permeability varies widely, both vertically and laterally. the extent of weathering may vary greatly within short distances. Because the weathering process varies widely, the degree of metal concentration may also vary widely. It is not at all uncommon for a laterite to change, within a few centimeters, from a virtually valueless rock to a high grade ore. Moreover, the depth of weathering, and hence the depth and form of the ore profile, vary greatly. Obviously, for this type of deposit, a few grab samples or a few drill holes are virtually worthless. The evaluation of such a deposit requires a sophisticated statistical study based on thousands of carefully selected samples. As a rule of thumb, the cost of evaluating a large bauxite or lateritic nickel deposit will be about one cent per ton of ore in the ground. Thus, the cost of evaluating a several hundred million ton deposit may be considerable. The following factors must be considered during the evaluation: Type of Sampling: The best and most reliable samples for the evaluation of lateritic ores are taken along large, vertical channels in hand-dug pits. Where labor costs are high, some form of drilling may be used in place of pitting, but it is always wise to choose a drilling procedure after checking drilling results against a series of pit channel samples. The drilling may not reproduce exactly the results from pit channel samples, but it may be possible to derive a constant correction factor. If the physical character of the laterite varies within the deposit, it may, of course, be necessary to change the type of drilling, the correction factor or both. In some areas, it has been found empirically that augers, chum drills, vacuum drills, rotary drills, or core drills yield satisfactory results. The problem is to find which drilling technique gives results most similar to channel samples through the heterogeneous sequence characterizing the laterite in a given area. In lateritic nickel deposits, the drilling characteristics of the lateritic and saprolitic portions of the deposit are very different. Within the saprolite, the major nickel values are commonly found in weathered zones within less altered boulders - a type of occurrence which makes sampling very difficult.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcrop- pings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, e.g., the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Center, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter adaptable to this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer is believed to be novel.

Economic constraints require that the optimum mineral processing circuit be chosen for a given ore and then the circuit be optimized. Meloy (1983) developed a general methodology for finding the best circuit for a given ore. This analysis, however, did not specify a way to optimize the best circuit once it has been found. To optimize a given circuit, it is necessary to find the optimum set points for each unit operation in the circuit. Developed in this paper is a simple, general equation which, when applied, defines the optimum separation set point for the maximum mineral grade. This general equation, Equation (4), applies not only to simple ores, but also to complex ores containing variable and locked particles. Currently, the optimum set point can be calculated only for heavy media and cyclone circuits, because they are the only unit operations for which the necessary data has been measured.

A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 11/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude. The primary thought at the time millisecond delays were introduced was to investigate the results on rock breakage by firing a line of holes in a quarry face so that charges in adjacent holes would not be detonated simultaneously. This could not be accomplished satisfactorily with regular delays. The time interval between successive periods of 1/2 to 1 sec was sufficient to permit considerable movement of the burden. If the burden of one hole was reduced to a great extent by the firing of an adjacent hole, the firing of the hole with the reduced burden would likely reveal this lack of confinement by a terrific report and wild throw of rock. In the early blasts with millisecond delays it was observed that instead of the usual sharp report, the blast had a muffled sound and vibration was not as perceptible as when simultaneous firing was used. Because many quarry operators were being threatened with injunctions or suits for damages by neighbors who claimed structural damage to their buildings, millisecond delays were tried extensively in quarries. In the majority of these trials, the results were very satisfactory. The seismologists recorded the ground movement created by many blasts and verified the initial observations that millisecond delays could be used to reduce vibrations appreciably. In the past few years the advantages of this principle of nonsimultaneous firing of the charges in blasts has become generally accepted. Today the quarry operator who has vibration troubles, inadequate breakage, and excessive backbreak and has not investigated the possibilities of millisecond delay blasting is ignoring a remedy that has proved satisfactory for many. His complacency may be costing him money. Because of the results attained in quarry blasting, it was logical that millisecond delays should be tried in construction work such as in road cuts. As formations in this type of work are likely to change rapidly with advance of the cut, it is more difficult to evaluate results than in quarry blasting. However, this improved control over timing has been beneficial in limiting throw, promoting fragmentation, and reducing overbreak. In blasting near buildings the reduction in vibration and in throw has been especially helpful. As blasters employed in construction work learn what may be accomplished by closer control over the time of firing of explosives charges, more and more millisecond delays are being used to supplant instantaneous electric blasting caps. Improved Fragmentation Underground With this background of promising results, it was not surprising that millisecond delays should go underground. In limestone mining use of millisecond delays as compared with use of cap and fuse or electric blasting caps showed improved fragmentation in stopes and in slabbing operations. Then an opportunity developed to use millisecond delays in some tunnels being driven in a limestone mine (fig. 1). Using the normal charge employed and merely substituting three millisecond delay periods for three regular delay periods, there was a noticeable difference in the appearance and the position of the pile of rock after a blast. A greater portion of the face was exposed, the crest of the pile was farther from the face, and the pile was heaped high along the center line of the tunnel leaving room to walk along the ribs to the face. Fragmentation was appreciably increased. It gave the impression that the slabs had been thrown against each other with tremendous force, promoting the movement of the broken rock along the center line of the tunnel away from the face. Because the drilling and the charge weights were unchanged, the evidence was convincing that the difference in timing was responsible for the difference in results. Probably a greater portion of the energy from the explosives had been expended in doing useful work on the rock. Zeros followed by two periods of millisecond delays were used in the V cut and in two slabs to either side of the cut in this simple round. The rate of oxidation of titanium in the temperature range 650° to 950°C has been measured. 'The linear rate law obtained is explained by interface reaction control of the process. Tracer experiments indicate the oxygen diffuses in at least one phase of the scale. THE kinetics of oxidation of titanium, principally at low temperatures and under varying oxygen pressures, have been reported.¹,² In the present investigation the rates of oxidation of titanium have been determined by the gravimetric method in the temperature range 650" to 1000°C under 1 atm of oxygen. Some of the scales formed were powdered and an endeavor was made to identify the phases present by X-ray diffraction. Alexander and Pigeon1 ascribe a logarithmic rate law to the growth of thick films formed at temperatures up to 565"C, and Gulbransen and Andrew' suggest that the parabolic rate law holds up to 600°C. In both cases large initial deviations from those relationships are apparent and no explanation is offered. In the present experiments it is shown that a linear rate law holds in the temperature range 650" to 1000°C, and it is suggested that the initial deviations observed are due in part to a spurious surface area effect and also to the high solubility of oxygen in titanium metal. Positive information on the mechanism of oxidation is not available, but oxygen ion diffusion through the lattice is inferred from the re- sults of trace experiments. X-ray analysis of the scale confirms Gulbransen and Hickman's' observation on the presence of rutile TiO². Experimental Details The titanium used in these experiments was prepared by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium and was used in the form of rolled sheet. Samples approximately 0.040x0.5x0.75 in. were cut and polished to a fineness of 4/0 on metal-lographic polishing papers. Individual samples, suspended on a platinum wire, were lowered into the hot zone of a furnace, in vacuo, by means of a winch, and oxygen was admitted after the desired temperature was attained. The increase of weight of single samples oxidized for fixed times at certain temperatures was determined by weighing the sample before and after oxidation on a chemical balance. In these instances the sample was used for only one time at one temperature. In some cases the course of oxidation was followed by attaching the sample to a sensitive spring balance and noting periodically the extension of the spring with time of oxidation. Kirkendall type experiments were carried out by marking the surface of the titanium prior to oxidation with a solution containing radioactive silver. After drying, the specimen was heated in vacuo to decompose the silver nitrate used, leaving a small amount of metallic radioactive silver on the surface. This paper describes the Bureau of Mines-El Paso Mining and Milling Company cooperative research program at the Emerald Isle mine3 near Kingman, Ariz. This research program was directed toward developing in situ leaching methods for 200,000 tons of ore exposed in the pit bottom and also 1,500,000 tons of ore under 200 feet of overburden adjacent to the pit. A test area in the pit bottom containing 15,000 tons of ore was blasted and leached. The results of this leach test were encouraging, and the entire pit bottom was leached in-place for about 7 months. Two test blasts under 200 feet of overburden and extending to 290 feet were detonated in an area near the open pit. The results of these blasts were evaluated by core drilling and permeability measurements. An in situ leaching system was designed, but not implemented, to recover copper from the 1,500,000-ton area near the pit. The company decided to terminate operations at the Emerald Isle mine in November 1975.

The paper "Design of Surface and Near-Surface Construction in Rock" by Deere, Hendron, Jr., Patton, and Cording discloses a principal difference between civil and mining engineering as applied to openings in rock. Generally, the civil engineer considers an opening as an asset, where a mining engineer finds that most of his openings are a liability. The openings, or rock surfaces, treated in the paper by Deere and coauthors are designed for lasting stability and the foundations for dams, the diversion tunnels, abutments, and surface excavations are expected to be stable for long periods or provide continuous access and other useful purposes. Except for those openings used for the transportation of men, materials, ore, and for ventilation, the mining engineer finds that his underground openings serve no useful purpose once the mineralized rock has been removed. Usually, these openings create problems such as reduced ventilation efficiency, added requirements for scaling, sealing, and other tasks necessary to maintain or isolate the openings. The surface openings and mine plants present another liability to the mining engineer. After the product has been removed from the earth, the abandoned pits or strips, tailing ponds, dumps, and buildings sometimes become hazardous, unsightly, or occupy surface areas that could be used for other purposes. As a general rule, the various disciplines involved in rock mechanics have different objectives and uses for openings; however, the basic concepts regarding the design or control of openings in rock are similar for each discipline. The review by Deere and his coauthors contains examples of the duplications in this technology, and, in particular, the common approaches used by civil and mining engineers. RICHARDS ALBERT SAUVEUR Meets on the first Monday evening of each winter month Twenty-fourth Meeting The Twenty-fourth meeting of the Boston Local Section was held at the Exeter Street Theater, Boston, Monday, Jan. 4, 1915. The Chairman, Henry L. Smyth, introduced Mr. S. Le Fevre, of Mineville, N. Y., who presented an exhibit of moving pictures, illustrating the various operations of mining and milling iron ore as carried out at Mineville. Mr. Le Fevre pointed out, as the pictures were run off, the dangers of the various operations, and the precautions that should be taken to avoid or minimize these dangers. . After the exhibition of pictures, the members adjourned to the University Club, where dinner was served. At the close of the dinner and an impromptu recital by Mr. Weeks, the meeting was adjourned.
