The attention of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers is asked to a description of the minerals of Southwestern Pennsylvania, as representing the minerals of an enormous area, stretching continuotisly, with local variations, along the western slopes, and at the base of the Alleghany Mountains, through Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, and destined to play no mean part in the future of the iron trade of the country. The particular locality is at and near Donbar, in Fayette County, where the most careful examinations and extensive developments have been made. The deep gorges cut by the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers, in their passage through the mountains and lower lands, give admirable facilities for observing the measures lying between the sandstones of No. 11 and the upper coal measures. Apart from its varied mineral and agricultural resources this section of country has great historic interest attaching to it. It was down the Monongahela that Braddock led his ill-fated army to its defeat under the wails of Port Duquesne, and it was up the Youghiogheny River and Dunbar Creek that the shattered remnants hastily fled to gain the camp of Colonel Dunbar, the second in command, who was entrenched upon a high knob, at the head of the creek which bears his name, and which is still known and visited as Dunbar's Camp. Numerous streams, runs, and localities preserve the names of the guides and pioneers who accompanied, in early colonial times, young George Washington, who was pushing his surveys into the trackless and hostile wilderness, and many of them taking up large tracts of

Since water is present in natural gas and petroleum reservoirs, it is of engineering value to have accurate experimental data regarding the behavior of water in hydro-carbon systems. Since experimental data of this nature are so scarce in literature, a program is under way at the University of Texas to obtain experimental data regarding the distribution of water in petroleum hydrocarbons. This initial paper is subdivided into three parts: A. The apparatus and analytical procedure are discussed. B. The equipment has been checked by comparing the experimental data with data of literature on the solubility of methane in water at 77°F and pressures to 10,000 psia. C. Experimental data are presented at 100, 160, 220, 280, and 340°F on the solubility of ethane in water at pressures to 1200 psia. As the temperature is increased the solubility of ethane in water first exhibits a minimum and then a maximum solubility. The range of applicability of Henry's Law is discussed. INTRODUCTION Although considerable experimental data have been published on water-hydrocarbon systems in the hydrate region, the information on these systems in the vapor-liquid and the vapor-liquid- 'References are given at end of paper. A survey of the literature on hydrocarbon-water systems at elevated pressures was presented by McKetta and Katz12,13,14 showing the systems and phases investigated. In addition to these existing published data, Poettman and Dean" have reported the water content of propane in the three-phase region (only the propane-rich liquid and the vapor phases were studied) and Michels, et al.15 have reported the solubility of methane in water at pressures to 6800 pounds per square inch at 77°F and at pressures to 1500 psia at temperatures to 300°F. It has been shown12,14 that the presence of water will materially affect the phase equilibrium of hydrocarbon systems. In order to make experimental studies on the quantitative effect of the presence of water in naturally-occurring hydrocarbon systems, it is desirable to have data available on binary hydrocarbon-water systems. A program is underway at this laboratory to determine the phase relations of the hydrocarbon-water systems. Initially the investigation will be limited to binary systems with water as one of the components. Later ternary and complex systems will be investigated and reported. EQUIPMENT AND ANALYTICAL PROCEDURE Apparatus In order to avoid a description of the methods employed in each subsequent paper, a description of the apparatus and the analytical procedure will be given here. The apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The numbered items in Fig. 1 represent the high pressure valves. The equilibrium cell is of the totally enclosed type, with a volume of 550 cubic centimeters. The cell is mounted in an air bath which in turn is mounted on pillow blocks and connected to a rocking mechanism so that the cell and bath will oscillate approximately 30 degrees above and below the horizontal at 35 oscillations per minute. The air bath is heated by two resistance heaters. The first or primary heater is 250 watts and is controlled by a thermoregulator; the second heater is of 500-watt size and is manually controlled to aid in bringing the cell to equilibrium temperature. Air circulation in the bath is accomplished by means of a fan. the shaft of which is concentric to the heaters. The walls of the bath are insulated with 2-in. thick blocks of 85 per cent magnesia. Temperature observations are made with three calibrated thermocouples. One couple is sealed in a well provided within the equilibrium cell, and is used as the criterion of the cell being at the equilibrium temperature. The other two thermocouples are located on opposite sides of the cell to indicate temperature uniformity within the air bath. The thermoregulator, used in conjunction with a relay, gives a variation in the temperature of the air in the bath of plus or minus one degree Fahrenheit. THE disastrous effect of two major wars on foreign economic health is giving American capital opportunities which might have not otherwise developed. At a time when discovery of major orebodies in the United States awaits fuller application of new geophysical tools and technical methods, U. S. investors must seek other fields where investment may be put to work. The unsettling effects of war have made it almost impossible for foreign nationals to develop mineral wealth, permitting Americans to enter at a time when U. S. mining, with a few exceptions, is in the process of expanding known orebodies and developing only a few new ones. Available capital, however, is not the only pre- requisite for entering the foreign mineral development field. The capital must be able to work in favorable economic atmosphere, a condition not easily satisfied in a world constantly in a state of political and social flux. In many countries, the political theory changes as often as the wind direction in March. Thus, the political stability of the form of government is of prime importance to the investor. In addition, a balanced budget and a moderate tax structure are important. Because in making foreign investment it is inevitable that one will have dealings with government officials, it is basic that they must be of high integrity. In countries filling the requirements, it will usually be found that the economic initiative of the individual is respected. REFRACTORY clay, one of Pennsylvania's important nonmetallic mineral resources, occurs at several horizons in beds of Pennsylvanian age. The Mercer fireclay, of Pottsville age (Table 1), is the most important of these clays. A study of this fireclay has been conducted by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey discontinuously over a period of seven years. The work has included field mapping of a rather large area, as well as petrographic, differen¬tial thermal, and X-ray studies of the fireclay. A comprehensive report on the project is now in preparation.

UNEXPECTED brittle failures of metals in practical applications are a serious problem to many industries and to the nation as a whole. Considerable effort has been devoted to studies of the brittle behavior in metals. However, the major portion of this effort has been directed at developing techniques and apparatus for the purposes of determining the susceptibility of metals to brittle failure and of making various types of observations of the phenomena. Relatively minor effort has been made to understand the basic mechanisms involved in initiating brittle failures. A more complete understanding of the nature and mechanism of the brittle failure problem would be very helpful in efforts directed toward predicting and avoiding brittle failure and toward the development of suitable materials and designs that are not susceptible to a brittle behavior. The intent of the present investigation is to acquire this basic understanding. The pronounced transition from a ductile-to-brittle behavior is most prevalent in metals having the body-centered-cubic lattice structure, primarily be- cause metals of this structure exhibit a strong dependence of yield strength upon temperature and the rate of straining. The generally recognized qualitative concept of the ductile-to-brittle transition is that brittle (cleavage) failure occurs when the yield strength exceeds the cleavage fracture strength. This condition can apparently be achieved by decreasing temperature or increasing strain rate. Likewise, a normally ductile metal can be made to fracture in an apparently brittle manner by the introduction of triaxial stresses (notches) where the ratio of normal to shear stresses can be increased to such an extent that the normal stress exceeds the fracture strength before the critical shear stress for plastic flow is achieved. Neither of these concepts require any prior plastic deformation or explain why the observed fracture strengths are so much less than the theoretical cohesive strength. The results of several investigations of the ductile-to-brittle transition in body-centered-cubic metals illustrate rather conclusively that measurable amounts of nonelastic deformation do precede cleavage fracture, even at extremely low temperatures. Mount Isa Mines Limited (Isamine) has process control computers in the major surface plants -- lead smelter, copper smelter, lead/zinc concentrator, and copper concentrator. HP computers are used to implement the more complex stabilizing control loops and control schemes aimed at optimizing plant performance. The choice of control strategies is discussed with particular reference to long-term performance in metallurgical plants. These control schemes must be understood by the process metallurgists who are responsible for the performance and initial fault finding. Major emphasis has been placed on the ability of the control systems to handle most of the common plant upset conditions as well as providing improved performance under normal operating conditions. To illustrate the approaches adopted, the lead/zinc concentrator crushing system and the process bag- house control system for lead smelter off-gas handling are reviewed in detail. The improvements in both of these areas resulting from control systems implementation are discussed.

It is the object of Chemical Mineralogy to determine the chemical composition of each species; to show the chemical relations of different species to each other where such exist; and also to explain the methods of distinguishing different minerals by chemical means. It thus embraces the most important part of Determinative Mineralogy. In order to understand the chemical constitution of minerals, some knowledge of the fundamental principles of Chemical Philosophy is required; and these are here briefly recapitulated. 448. Chemical Elements. - Chemistry recognizes about eighty sub- stances which cannot at will be decomposed, or divided into others, by any process of analysis at present known; these substances are called the chemical elements. A list of them is given in a later article (452) ; common examples are: Oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, chlorine, gold, silver, sodium, etc.

ONE of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out' of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. Dr. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo., their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and Dr. R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to cooperate.

The oil industry has long recognized the need for increasing well productivity. To meet this need, a process is being developed whereby the producing formation permeability is increased by hydraulically fracturing the formation. The "Hydrafrac" process, as it is now being used, consists of two steps: (1) injecting a viscous liquid containing a granular material, such as sand for a propping agent, under high hydraulic pressure to fracture the formation; (2) causing the viscous liquid to change from a high to a low viscosity so that it may be readily displaced from the formation. To date the process has been used in 32 jobs on 23 wells in 7 fields, resulting in a sustained increase in production in 11 wells. INTRODUCTION Need For Process Although explosives, acidizing, and other methods have long been used, there still exists a need for artificial means of improving the productive ability of oil and gas wells, particularly for wells which produce from formations which do not react readily with acids. This paper discusses the development of a hydraulic fracturing process, "Hydrafrac", which shows distinct promise of increasing production rates from wells producing from any type of formation. The method is also considered applicable to gas and water injection wells, wells used for solution mining of salts and, with some modification, to water wells and sulphur wells. Requirements of Process In considering such a possible process, it appeared that certain requirements must be met. Some of these are as follows: A. The hydraulic fluid selected must be sufficiently viscous that it can be injected into the well at pressure high enough to cause fracturing. B. The hydraulic fluid should carry in suspension a propping agent, such as sand, so that once a fracture is formed, it will be prevented from closing off and the fracture created will remain to serve as a flow channel for oil and gas. C. The fluid should be an oily one rather than a water-base fluid, because the latter would be harmful to many formations. D. After the fracture is made, it is essential that the fracturing fluid be thin enough to flow hack out of the well and not stay in place and plug the crack which it has formed. E. Sufficient pump capacity must be available to inject the fluid faster than it will leak away into the porous rock formation. F. In many instances, formation packers must be used to confine the fracture to the desired level, and to obtain the advantages of multiple fracturing. Development of Process As a necessary step in the development of this process, it was deemed advisable to determine if the Hydrafrac fluids were actually fracturing the formation or whether these special fluids were merely leaking away into the surrounding formation. To determine this, a shallow well, 15 feet deep, was drilled into a hard sandstone. Casing was set, the plug drilled, and the well deepened in the conventional manner. A fracturing fluid dyed a bright red was used to break down the formation. Sand mixed with distinctively colored solids was injected into the well with the fracturing fluid to prop open any fracture made in the formation. A simulated gel breaker solution dyed a bright blue was then pumped into the well to determine if the gel breaker would follow the first solution. The results are shown in Figure 1. It was noted that a fracture was formed about the well bore, that the propping agent was transported back into the break, and that the breaker solution did actually follow the fracturing gel out into the fracture. While it is realized that this shallow well test is probably not exactly equivalent to a deep test, the results were interpreted as being a definite indication of what happens down the hole during a Hydrafrac job. Of interest in this connection is an investigation reported by S. T. Yuster and J. C. Calhoun, Jr.' This study, re~orted after the Hydrafrac work was under way, presents some excellent field data supporting the theory of fracturing a formation with hydraulic pressure. METHOD Steps of Hydrafrcu: Process Figure 2 shows a simplified cross-sectional view of a well treated by one version of the process. The first step, formation breakdown, is done with a viscous fluid, usually consisting of an oil such as crude oil or gasoline, to which has been added a bodying agent. Due to availability and price, war-surplus Napalm has been used in the majority of experiments to date. Napalm is the soap which was used in the war to make "jellied gasoline". The next step consists of breaking down the viscosity of the gel by injecting a gel-breaker solution and then after several hours, putting the well back on production. Figure 3 shows diagram-matically, a typical field hookup. The oil or gasoline is unloaded into the 10 bbl. tank shown on the left rear of the truck. This base fluid is picked up by the mixing pump and pumped through the jet mixer, where the granular soap is added. Next it goes into a small mixing tub, from which the high-pressure pump takes suction. The solution is then pumped into the well. Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Ala. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open- pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A.P. Green Refractories Co., were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope-stabilization problem and aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

With the continued development of low-grade porphyry copper deposits by open pit mining, substantial amounts of copper-bearing strip material have been accumulated in waste dumps adjacent to the many large mines. Since the end of World War II, the production of copper from leaching these copper-bearing wastes increased from approximately 4% of the total copper production to 10% by the early 1960's. Projected increases will probably raise this figure to 20 to 30% by the early 1970's. Furthermore, a gradual recognition of the economic feasibility of leaching mined-out areas is evident and will undoubtedly contribute additional production. Waste dumps in canyons and gulches on the periphery of open pit mines, mine stopes, caved areas, and abandoned open pits often contain substantial quantities of leachable rock ranging in concentration from 0.1 to 0.4% copper. Recent developments in the leaching of copper, mainly the recognition of bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals combined with better under- standing of the control of the salt content of the leach solutions, both by adjusting the pH and/or by hydrolysis, are resulting in a greatly expanded recovery of copper from these hitherto uneconomic mine rejects. 11.5-1. Mechanism of Leaching. Leaching processes for the extraction of metal values from mine ore or waste may be classified for convenience as either chemical leaching or bacterial leaching. Chemical leaching is considered to be the extraction of soluble salts by metathesis in acidic, basic, or neutral water solutions. The reactions involved may be evaluated by chemical thermodynamics. Bacterial leaching, although a chemical process, is dependent on biological catalysis and this is generally a much more complex process. This justifies its separate treatment in the application to leaching. Acid ferric sulfate solutions are commonly employed in the mining industry to leach valuable metals from metal sulfide ores. The computer methods employed as well as the model constructed are based on economic and econometric theory. Since the earliest years of recorded history the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known and utilized. The mummies of early Egyptian kings were coated with asphaltic materials, and asphalt mastics were common in Babylon. Any finely divided, low- priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from near-by fires. It was found that by increasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be successfully embedded, and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade so as to cover the asphalt completely a high degree of resistance to fire was attained. Needless to say, in this early period asphaltic roofing needed such selling points to gain acceptance in a field dominated by wood, slate, and tile. When asphalt is protected from the sun's rays it is extremely durable, but when exposed to sunlight its surface is comparatively rapidly decomposed. Completely covering asphalt roofing with mineral surfacing protects the asphalt and adds materially to the life of the roof—conservatively, 500 per cent. Slate Graftules In the production of split slate shingles a large quantity of waste slate is accumulated, as 60 to go per cent of the rock quarried is discarded. This waste was a continuing burden on the industry. Some was marketed as ground slate flour for filler in paint and linoleum, and there is a record that as early as 1906 two carloads of coarse screenings from slate flour were marketed as granules for surfacing roofing.
