Determination of the solubility of oxygen in iron containing silicon, or manganese, or both, has confirmed the earlier work on silicon, shown that manganese is more effective than expected, and has demonstrated that the combination of silicon and manganese is a much stronger deoxidizer than might have been inferred from their individual effects. SILICON and manganese are of primary impor-tance in the deoxidation of steel, and a study has been made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc. of the solubility of oxygen in iron in the presence of silicon and manganese, singly and in combination, as a basis for more effective control of inclusion formation. The investigation was carried out with the same equipment and experimental procedure that were used in the determination of the oxygen solubility of iron containing aluminum'. The heats were melted in a rotating crucible furnace under an argon atmosphere. Bath temperatures were controlled by platinum/platinum +10 pct rhodium thermocouples to attain equilibrium at 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C, so that oxygen solubility isotherms were determined directly without requiring calculation from a temperature coefficient. A detailed description of the furnace and procedure is given in the paper on aluminum deoxidation1. Oxygen solubility in the presence of more than 0.10 pct silicon was found to approximate earlier determinations closely, but some deviation was observed at lower silicon contents. Manganese appeared to be more effective than had been anticipated. The combination of silicon and manganese lowered the solubility for oxygen markedy as compared with either silicon or manganese alone. Although the solubility for oxygen in the presence of both silicon and manganese represents only a part of the information needed to control inclusion formation, it suggests a partial explanation of the benefits of this combination that have been observed in practice. Manganese and Oxygen in Liquid Iron: The study of oxygen in iron in the presence of manganese was carried out in magnesia crucibles of the type furnished commercially for laboratory induction furnaces. Alumina crucibles were unsatisfactory, because the work on the aluminum-oxygen equilibria in iron' had shown that merely melting iron in an alumina crucible limited the solubility of oxygen to a level considerably below that anticipated for moderate concentrations of manganese. Silica crucibles appeared unsuitable because of the dangers of excessive fluxing by the melt. CORROSION tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply f oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case f salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion f the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend .2 He tested the corrosion f mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream f air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number f jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor."

The problems and limitations encountered in the Physical beneficiation of the Appalachian Red Iron Ores are discussed. Two major problems are identified - the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities in the iron-bearing minerals. A process that combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation-separation methods is suggested. By these methods, concentrates assaying 60-61 % Fe, exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56% Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90% iron recovery. Moreover, it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25% to 0.03% phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

It sometimes happens that old knowledge is forgotten, or half-forgotten, and its rediscovery is hailed as a great new advance in technology. Autogenous grinding affords such an example. The oldest-or apparently the oldest-commercial application of continuous autogenous grinding on a large scale outside of South Africa occurred at San Juancito, Honduras, where a total of more than two million tons of silver ore were ground autogenously with complete success from 1918 to the early 1940's. The history of the San Juancito silver deposits begins in 1880 when- the New York and Honduras Rosario Mining Co. started mining silver at a rate which soon reached two million ounces of silver annually. In 1912 the Company's first mill, located in the village of San Juancito, was shut down and its equipment transferred to a new cyanide plant. This plant, constructed on a mountainside near the mine, was equipped with tube pebble mills in which Normandy or Danish pebbles were used initially.

To a very large extent the quality of a mild steel ingot is determined by the manner in which it is poured into the ingot mold and its behavior during the first few minutes after it has been poured. The formation of the solid rim of metal around the periphery of the mold, the effervescent action of the liquid steel within this solidified rim and the upward or downward movement of the metal level are indications of what is going on beneath the surface of the liquid metal, especially at the interface at which solidification occurs. Observation of this "rimming action" enables an experienced observer to predict the thickness of the sound skin of the ingot and the location and extent of cavities or "blowholes" caused by entrapment of gases. The control of rimming action at the hands of a skillful steel pourer is a vital part of the control of quality in mild steel sheet, and the behavior of the liquid steel during the rimming period is a useful criterion of the melting and refining practices employed in the open hearth. The behavior of rimming steel during solidification depends primarily upon the evolution of gases from the molten metal and it is therefore a problem of considerable interest to determine the nature and amount of the gases evolved. A number of attempts to determine either the amount or the analysis of the, evolved gases have been reported. Klinger,1 in 1925, analyzed the gases extracted from rimming, semikilled and killed steel ingots and found that the chief constituent of the rimming gas was carbon monoxide. The relatively large amounts of nitrogen reported in his first few samples may have been due to incomplete removal of air from the gas-collecting mechanism. McKune2 reported similar studies of rimming ingots from which surprisingly large proportions of nitrogen and hydrogen were evolved. Ameen and Willners3 determined both the amount and composition of gases extracted from unkilled ingots with the aid of diminished pressure. Their ingots weighed only 80 kg. About four years ago the writer proposed a revision of the correlation of the Huronian formations in Michigan, and noted the bearing of the question on the correlations of the Huronian rocks in Wisconsin and Minnesota.1 Dr. C. K. Leith opposed this revision and argued for the retention of the correlations of the United States Geological Survey, published in 1911,2 for which he and Dr. Van Hise were mainly responsible. As late as June, 1917, Harder and Johnson, following Leith, thought it "premature to change radically a correlation based on years of careful field work."3 The work of Wolff on the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges, of Hotchkiss on the Gogebic Range (unpublished), and of the writer and assistants on the Michigan ranges, together with data developed by exploratory and mining operations, has introduced so many new facts not recognized in the scheme of the U. S. Geological Survey that the correlations of 1911 must be considered, in some important respects, obsolete. Indeed, new data are accumulating so rapidly that any classification, which for the moment may seem best to explain the facts, is almost immediately modified or refined by further observations. The problem of Huronian correlations is difficult, but interesting and important. With the aid of fossils, stratigraphers of the post-Algonkian formations have been able to show that slight disconformities mag separate strata of vastly different ages, and that within physically conformable strata may be concealed a hiatus of great magnitude. In the non-fossiliferous Huronian group, minor physical breaks in the strata are only beginning to attract attention, and it is too early to discuss what bearing these will have in correlating the formations of one area with those of another, but it is safe to say that the "lost intervals" which are not disclosed by physical relationships will remain forever lost; therefore we may not hope to discover the ultimate truth concerning the

The magnitude and economic importance of the problem of correctly valuing natural-gas leaseholds become evident when me consider that: (a) Natural gas is handled in 55 per cent. of the gas distributing plants in the United States. (b) Present known natural-gas acreage forms 47 per cent. of the total known mineral-land acreage in the United States. (c) Five acres of land are now required to protect and maintain continuous service to each of the 2,000,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in the United States. (d) The cost of acquiring and maintaining this acreage of an expendible resource represents a substantial part of the cost of the natural-gas service to the consumer. (e) "The right of a citizen by means of his ownership of or his mining leases on land to draw gas from beneath its surface is property and sometimes valuable property."' A large number of other court decisions have established the basic legal principle that the right to drill for gas within a given area constitutes an interest in the land itself, and is necessarily an exclusive property right. Definition of Vested Interests or Rights "Vested interests are economic interests which are legally recognized to be such that they cannot be impaired by public action, directly or indirectly, without indemnification. Vested interests are largely property interests. The recognition of an interest as a vested interest gives it some of the attributes of property, and by American courts it would be comprised in their very inclusive concept of property. Otherwise than through property, vested interests generally arise through contract."

An unusually large number of crystals of magnetite obtained in the exploitation of a deposit of magnetic iron-ore of remarkable purity, encouraged the preparation of this paper, and its presentation at this time, that the matter might go on record in the Transactions. To make this record more complete, a preliminary statement is offered concerning the district and locality in which the ore is found. To the northeastern portion of the State of New York the United States is indebted for a large percentage of the iron-ore which has assisted in developing the resources and industries of the nation. As early as 1804, iron-ore was mined between Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains, and this district has since been an important and continuous contributor to our iron-ore supply. Arsenical gold ores occur in many parts of the world, including numerous mines in Canada and the western United States. Free gold is often finely disseminated in the grains of sulfide minerals, arsenopyrite, pyrite, orpiment and realgar. Generally a sulfide concentrate is produced by flotation. Arsenical ores or concentrates are not amenable to direct cyanidation and therefore are considered refractory. A wide variety of roasting equipment and conditions have been used by the mills to remove arsenic and sulfur from these concentrates. The resulting calcine is easy to cyanide and gold is recovered from the cyanide solution by zinc dust cementation. Room-temperature potential-pH diagrams and high-temperature phasestability diagrams are presented to discuss the chemistry of the gold cyanidation, cementation, and roasting steps in the presence of arsenic. The environmental aspects of arsenic discharge are also included.

THE firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 14000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the development of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovered by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... . put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silver spoon downward, without the least force upward.1," This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only, is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. What to do with atomic wastes is one of the major problems of the atomic age. Unlike other waste materials, these cannot be burned, evaporated, or filtered, and the transfer of radioactive material from one physical or chemical state to another is not a complete answer, because only time diminishes radioactivity. Rate of decay of radioactive materials varies from a few seconds to several thousand years and cannot be altered by known economic methods. At present the Atomic Energy Commission and its contractors are coping with the situation adequately. Intensification of private development of atomic power could, however, pose problems in the nation's nuclear energy program.

WITH the acquisition of the Nichols Copper Company ' and the development of the large Copper Products manufacturing and selling organization, the Phelps Dodge Corporation had attained two of its important goals. But at that particular time both its immediate and long-range prospects were giving the company serious concern. The financial panic that began late in 1929 was growing worse instead of better. Neither raw materials nor finished products could find a market. In 1932 the price of copper fell to the almost unprecedented figure of four and eight tenths cents a pound. Domestic production of copper in the United States was further threatened by a large low-cost output from the mines of Africa and the Andes. Canadian copper mines, with their large yield of other valuable metals from the same ores, added to the difficulties of the American companies. The importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.l It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a, new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. The study of the flow of oil and gas mixtures through oil-bearing formations has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years, and has resulted in a series of research projects based upon various phases of the flow of heterogeneous fluids through porous media. Obviously, the low cost of producing oil during the flowing life of a well makes it desirable to obtain production by natural flow as long as possible and to effect a maximum recovery of oil and gas by the utilization of reservoir energy through efficient methods based upon a thorough knowledge of reservoir characteristics. Despite the extensive research that has been carried out, there is little information available on the behavior of oil and gas mixtures flowing through reservoir formations. This makes it impossible to predetermine the optimum operating conditions for flowing wells. A differential pressure must exist in the reservoir in order to induce flow toward the well. It is a well established fact that with homogeneous fluids the relation of pressure drop to linear distance traveled is a straight-line function as long as the flow is viscous. However, in regard to gas-saturated oils, a number of investigators1l,2,3 have reported that the flow characteristics are materially altered as some of the lighter hydrocarbons are liberated from the oil to form gas while the fluid passes through the reservoir. Most of the work done has been concerned primarily with steady-state flow of liquid-gas mixtures. Cloud1 has studied the effects of saturating crude petroleum oils with various gases, together with the resultant pressure gradients under steady flow conditions, noting that unsaturated oils flowed faster and yet maintained lower pressure gradients than saturated oils. AN elaborate discussion under this heading formed a chapter in one of the reports made by Professor Raymond as Commissioner of Mining Statistics.* In a subsequent report- was printed a paper, by Mr. William Main, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina, containing a theoretical investigation into the effect of the velocity of impact on the effective ditty of stamps. A visit to the Lake Superior copper region last summer suggested an inquiry into the relative efficiency and economy of the enormous steam stamps of the copper-mills, as compared with the results obtained with the cant and tappet stamps commonly used in the West. The atmospheric stamp used at the Phoenix Mill promised to add interest to the inquiry, as giving an example of unusually high speed, this stamp making 160 drops per minute. In introducing his subject Dr. Raymond makes the following remarks, which are quite apropos of the present investigation : "In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at- the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted.
