IN THE past, we have, perhaps, been somewhat careless in our furnace practice, in the use of high-grade material, lowering the production costs through demanding high-grade ores, increasing the size of units, and eliminating heat losses by collecting and returning unused heat to our furnaces. Further economies would seem to be possible through keeping out of the furnace those materials that appear to serve no useful purpose and carry with them heat that should be used in reduction operations. In the manufacture of pig iron, about three tons of inert nitrogen pass through the furnace for each ton of iron produced. This nitrogen serves no useful purpose in the chemical actions involved, but when discharged into the atmosphere it carries away a considerable quantity of heat. Can not this loss be eliminated, at least in part, through the use of more oxygen in the blast? Many metallurgical chemists, during the past 20 years, have stated that they thought it can and have urged that the plan be tried. Others have expressed doubt, not being able to visualize how more oxygen could be used in present practice; they have regarded it as impracticable, without trying to conceive of an entirely new practice based on a new reagent. That more experimental work has not been done is due to the fact that no cheap oxygen has been available, but the committee believes that there is strong reason to expect that, should a demand exist, 99 per cent. oxygen may be made at a cost not to exceed $3 per ton. The theoretical studies of the committee have indicated such marked economy by using oxygenated air in various operations that its members strongly recommend experimental work to verify the anticipated economies. The committee has developed plans for experimentally determining the effects of oxygen-enriched air on the operation of an iron, blast furnace. A furnace with a height of 30 ft. has been built and it is recommended that the plans be put in, effect as the first step in the research.

That calcium will activate quartz for flotation with anionic collectors such as soaps has been known for a number of years,1 2 3 and the method has been applied to the concentration of various iron ore 4 5 6 as well as to other materials. Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. THERE are three objectives in translation of works of this character : to give a faithful, literal translation of the author's statements ; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader ; and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been doubly difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being ; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command, and instead of adopting into the text his native German terms, he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs. It is upon this rock that most former attempts at translation have been wrecked. Except for a very small number, we believe we have been able to discover the intended meaning of such expressions from a study of the context, assisted by a very incomplete glossary prepared by the author himself, and by an exhaustive investigation into the literature of these subjects during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. That discovery in this particular has been only gradual and obtained after much labour, may be indicated by the fact that the entire text has been re-typewritten three times since the original, and some parts more often ; and further, that the printer's proof has been thrice revised. We have found some English equivalent, more or less satisfactory, for practically all such terms, except those of weights, the varieties of veins, and a few minerals. In the matter of weights we have introduced the original Latin, because it is impossible to give true equivalents and avoid the fractions of reduction ; and further, as explained in the Appendix on Weights it is impossible to say in many cases what scale the Author had in mind. The English nomenclature to be adopted has given great difficulty, for various reasons ; among them, that many methods and processes described have never been practised in English-speaking mining communities, and so had no representatives in our vocabulary, and we considered the introduction of German terms undesirable ; other methods and processes have become obsolete and their descriptive terms with them, yet we wished to avoid the introduction of obsolete or unusual English ; but of the greatest importance of all has been the necessity to avoid rigorously such modern technical terms as would imply a greater scientific understanding than the period possessed. A microscope objective of given numerical aperture, whew used with light of given wave length, has some fixed limit of resolution. This may be expressed as potential resolving ability-the ability to resolve is inherent in the lens but whether this limit is achieved in practice is quite another matter. Nearly 50 years ago Abbe evolved theoretical considerations which indicated that the ability of a lens to resolve detail is directly proportional to twice the numerical aperture of the objective and inversely proportional to the wave length of the light used. It is true, unquestionably, that as the numerical aperture of the objective is increased the potential resolving ability of the lens is increased and likewise whew the wave length of the light used is decreased, the degree of resolution is increased. Whether Abbe's formula expresses the exact relationship is not a matter of great concern. It suffices to know that to improve resolution, other things being equal, two avenues of approach are available. Either the numerical aperture of the objective may be increased or the wave length of the light decreased. With the apochromatic system it is possible to employ successfully wave lengths from 400 to 500, µµ and still secure reasonably short exposures. The present limit for numerical aperture is 1.40 N. A. although objectives of 1.65 N. A. are wow an experimental possibility for metallurgical work. Thus certain well defined limits are set for those who work within the range of the visible spectrum. In order to take advantage of the increase in resolving power which accompanies a decrease in the wave length of light employed, Dr. A. Köhler and Dr. M. Vow Rohr of the Zeiss Scientific Staff developed the "monochromats." These are quartz objectives corrected for the single wave length 275 µµ which lies in the ultra-violet region of the spectrum. They also developed a series of quartz oculars and a complete photo-micrographic equipment with which to use the quartz optics. Quartz must be used for the optical parts because glass absorbs ultra-violet light almost completely. Thus there was made available about 20 years

PHOSPHATE ROCK is a low- priced commodity. This fact has influenced the choice of mining and beneficiating methods to a greater degree, perhaps, than in most other low-grade mining operations. The fact that many yards of everburden and matrix must be stripped and mined per ton of salable "rock" produced and sold has necessitated he development of relatively simple btneficiating plants having high capacity and low capital and operating costs. The law of diminishing returns must always be reckoned with in phosphate mining and washing, and often recovery must be sacrificed in favor of costs in order to achieve the highest over-all economic efficiency. The phosphate-bearing formation, known as "matrix," is composed of (1) phosphate pebbles, which are somewhat rounded in shape and which vary in size from 1-in, to micron sizes, (2) rounded quartz grains usually smaller than 10 mesh, and (3) clay, of varying "stiffness," which is the binder of the matrix. The phosphate pebbles vary in hardness. Their color, which varies from white to black, is not a reliable indicator of the Bone Phosphate of Lime (B.P.L.) content of the

STUDIES in the high-temperature separations chemistry of thorium-uranium fuels are complicated by the corrosive nature of these molten metal systems at 1700°C. Separations research pointed toward the removal of fission products from irradiated alloys has included a frozen salt-bed technique which minimizes container reaction with molten metal. The procedure consists of high-frequency induction melting of the metal sample which is supported by a vertical column of unmelted salt. The molten alloy melts its immediate salt environment and as it slowly falls down through the column, many of the fission-product poisons are transferred into the fused salt environment. The molten salt-metal zone is encompassed at all times by unmelted salt, preventing container contact. EXPERIMENTAL Experimental methods were separated into three parts: salt-bed preparation, melting, and analytical evaluation. A) Bed Preparation—The procedure for casting calcium-fluoride briquettes was to compress the powdered salt at 5,000 to 10,000 psi and place this compact in a graphite crucible. This assembly was inserted into a vacuum system and surrounded by an alumina crucible as well as molybdenum, tantalum, or stainless-steel foil thermal-radiation shields. The pressure was reduced and the crucible heated under vacuum to about 800°C with the fore pump operating. Argon was then admitted to about 0.8 atm and heating continued until the CaF2 had melted 5 min at the melting point seemed satisfactory). Apparatus used included a 1-in. graphite crucible with 1/8-in. walls, 1-in. ID in a 2-in. induction coil, and a 6-kw Ajax high-frequency converter. B) Melting—Calcium-fluoride briquettes, 1 in. in diam and 1/2 to 1 in. thick, were prepared and vertically stacked to obtain the desired column length. An irradiated alloy sample (nut = 10") was placed on top of the salt column and the assembly was connected to the vacuum system. After evacuation of 5 to 10 , purified argon was admitted and the system flushed twice. The final argon pressure was about 0.8 atm. The sample was heated by induction at a power of about 6.5 kw. It then melted its way down through the salt and freely dropped into a small alumina crucible. The molten metal is followed during its downward course by the induction coil which is mounted upon a power-driven machine-threaded shaft. Experimental conditions used in the foregoing work

TD-Nickel has been broken in tension and in fatigue at voom temperature. Rod specimens failed in tension by necking, with axial cracks attributed to voids elongated in the extrusion direction. Fatigue specimens failed in shear. Thin-film electron microscopy showed that the subgrain structure of TD-Nickel was very stable, and that particle-matrix detachment was very difficult, in tension and fatigue. TD-Nickel softened slightly during fatigue but had a high fatigue ratio (0.5at 10' cycles). Fractography suggested that Stage I fatigue crack propagation is greatly extended in TD-Nickel. Td-NICKEL* is a dispersion of 2 pct by volume of thoria (ThO2) in nickel, produced by powder-metallurgical methods including compaction, sintering, and extrusion. The spherical thoria particles, which may have a mean diameter of a few hundred angstroms, are dispersed with a mean planar spacing of a few thousand angstroms. By a combination of cold working and annealing, a subgrain or cell structure of dislocations intimately associated with the dispersion can be produced.' This gives the material useful tensile properties which are extremely resistant to exposure to high temperatures.'-= At the same time, the material shows considerable ductility.3'4 At the beginning of the present work, it was considered of great interest to investigate the mechanical stability of TD-Nickel under conditions of fatigue. On the one hand, materials which derive strength from a cold-worked structure are unstable in that they are susceptible to fatigue softening: in addition, the presence of discontinuities such as the particle-matrix interfaces might be expected to assist in the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, in that they may provide local concentrations of internal stress and sites for the initiation of voids." On the other hand, the substantial ductility of TD-Nickel suggests that if it obeys Coffin's relation8 (or the more refined form proposed by Manson9) it should have good fatigue resistance. The initial purpose of this investigation was to assess the importance of these factors. Also, relatively little fundamental work has been done on the mechanism of fatigue in dispersion-strengthened materials. Work on overaged A1-4 pct CU10-12 revealed a very large Bauschinger effect indicative of internal stresses at the particles, and very great fatigue hardening1' presumably due to the multiple slip stimulated by these internal stresses, followed by softening which was initially due to softening in the matrix, but later might have arisen from cracking at the particle-matrix interfaces. The study of overaged Al-4 pct Cu could not settle this latter point by the electron microscopy of thin films, since the dispersion is too coarse. A previous study of the fatigue of internally oxidized copper13 was complicated by inter granular failure, attributed to oxide particles at grain bouhdaries; internal oxidation of single crystals, however, improved their fatigue properties.'3 Investigations of SAP (sintered aluminum powder) are complicated by the complex particle shapes, and the possibility of continuous internal oxide films.14 It was hoped to avoid these difficulties with TD-Nickel, which had the further advantages that it was commercially available and suitable for study by the thin-film technique. 1) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE TD-Nickel was purchased from the Driver-Harris Co. as 3/9-in.-diam rod which had been extruded, swaged, and "stress-relieved" (normally at 1010°C for 1 hr). Continuous-radius fatigue specimens with a minimum diameter of -0.1 in. were ground to shape and electropolished in 40 pct phosphoric, 35 pct sul-furic, 25 pct water at 25oC, with a stainless-steel cathode, at -6 v. Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature with a Sonntag SF-1-U machine operating in push-pull at 1800 cycles per min, and in an Instron TT-C-L modified for reversed stressing at 26 cycles per min as described elsewhere.10 Round tensile specimens were ground with 0.85-in. gage lengths of 0.135 in, diam, electropolished, and tested in a Tinius Olsen hydraulic machine. The surfaces of fatigue specimens were examined with a Reichert metallograph. Discs for electron microscopy with a Siemens Elmiskop I were spark-cut 0.01 in. thick with a modified Servomet 11 employing a tool of moving molybdenum wire, cleaned in 50 pct acetic, 30 pct nitric, 10 pct phosphoric, and 10pctsul-furic at 85oC, and thinned by the window method in the electropolishing solution at -20°C and -6 v. Two-stage replicas (parlodion, then Pt-50 pct C self-shadowed at 40 deg) were taken from fatigue fracture surfaces for electron microscopy. Plane sections parallel to the specimen axis and containing the direction of fatigue crack propagation were polished, etched with Carapella's reagent, and examined optically. Transmission Laue X-ray photographs of as-received material electropolished to a point were used to determine preferred orientation. 2) RESULTS 2.1) The Structure of As-Received Material. A correlation has been found in rock-salt structure single crystals between the latent hardening, measured by the direct stress activation of oblique slip systems, and the stress-strain behavior in simple compression. Materials with high latent hardening, like LiF, strain-harden at a low rate (Stage I) even when severely constrained. KCl, in contrast, shows low latent hardening and a tendency to strain-harden at a high rate (Stage 11). This correlation suggests that oblique slip is essential for Stage II hardening of these materials. THE role of secondary slip in the strain hardening of metal single crystals is a topic of lively controversy. On the one hand are theories in which secondary dislocations participate directly in Stage II hardening in the fcc metals, for example through the production of sessile dislocations,1 forest intersections, or jog formation. Much of the experimental evidence on which these theories are based has been reviewed by Clarebrough and Hargreaves.~ On the other hand, a recent theory5 denies that secondary slip has an essential role in Stage II hardening or in the transition from Stage I to Stage 11. In the latter view, Stage I is not terminated by an increase in the activity of secondary systems but by the exhaustion of undeformed material.6 The experiments reported in this paper will not resolve this controversy since the materials being studied are cubic ionic crystals rather than metals. However, the results do show in an unusual way a direct connection between "secondary" (nonortho-gonal or oblique) slip and strain hardening in these materials. Specifically, a correlation has been found between two independently measured properties, first the latent hardening of oblique (110)(1i0) slip systems as measured by direct stress activation of these systems, and second the stress-strain behavior at small strains. From prior work, it was known that in most cubi-cally oriented rock-salt structure crystals, two orthogonal slip systems operate and exclude the other equally stressed pair, oblique to the first pair.7'8 This observation apparently indicates that a significant interference exists between slip on oblique (110) planes and a relatively small interference between orthogonal (110) planes. The present experiments were begun with the intent of obtaining a quantitative measure of this difference by means of a study of latent hardening in these crystals. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The experiments were basically of two types, first the determination of stress-strain curves by compression along a single (100) axis, and second the measurement of latent hardening by compressive prestrain along one cube axis followed by the determination of the yield stress in a second (latent) cube direction. All tests were done at room temperature in an Instron machine by compression between lapped, parallel steel faces. Three specimen shapes were used. For long crystals (nominal dimensions, 1/8 in. square by 1/2 in. long) the ends were lubricated with an oil-graphite mixture. Superior results with short crystals (about 1/8 in. cube) were obtained using 0.003-in. teflon film.' Thin crystals (1/4 in. square by 3/32 in.) were used for latent-hardening measurements and similar results were obtained with either lubricant. Test specimens were cleaved from Harshaw single crystals which had been irradiated to a dose of lo8 roentgen using a cobalt-60 source. The irradiation raises the yield stress and tends to prevent plastic deformation during sample preparation.10 Prior to testing, the irradiation hardening was removed by an anneal at 400°C. Ideal compression specimens have flat, parallel faces. In short specimens particularly, satisfactory results demand a close approximation to this ideal. In the present work, cleaved surfaces were often used directly as compression faces. The degree of success using this method depends on two factors: 1) the smoothness of cleavage faces, and 2) the extent to which the crystal is deformed or crushed by the chisel during the cutting of a long crystal into short pieces. Unfortunately, only one material of those studied, LiF, was completely satisfactory. NaF, NaC1, KC1, and KBr behaved less well so that

Introduction The technique being investigated here uses a physical mine model which consists of a plexiglass room-and-pillar model 11.4 x 11.4 cm (4.5 x 4.5 in.). It is placed at the bottom of a larger plexiglass box 25.4 x 30.5cm (10 x 12 in.). The box is then filled with a model material representing geologic overburden. Sand has been selected because of its deformability under gravitational forces. The mine model is capable of creating a cavity and induces movement on the surface of the model material. This surface disturbance can be measured using a photographic technique called holographic interferometry. This paper discusses results of an investigation of the possibility of generating subsidence criteria using physical mine models and laser holographic interferometry. Problem Statement Subsidence appears to be widespread in two states - Pennsylvania and Illinois - although serious subsidence is found in localized areas of numerous other states (HRB Singer Inc., 1977). The US Bureau of Mines estimates that more than 1618 km2 (400,000 acres) of urban areas are threatened by subsidence. Pennsylvania and West Virginia contain 57% of these threatened areas, with the remainder being spread out over 16 states (Johnson and Miller, 1979). Events of subsidence have been reported in urban areas, including Pennsylvania (Gray et al., 1977) and Illinois (Mahar and Marino, 1981). One location has observed three episodes of subsidence beginning in 1950 (Bruhn et al., 1981). These subsidence events all occurred over abandoned room-and-pillar mines. Some mines have been abandoned more than 50 years (Bauer and Hunt,1981) . Available research does not offer much on the problem related to time dependent subsidence, especially those associated with the failure of remnant coal pillars. The physical modeling technique developed at West Virginia University is capable of measuring both instantaneous and time delayed subsidence. Laser Holographic Interferometry Laser holographic interferometry, or holometry, uses the interference properties of laser light to measure small movements of objects. The object requires only optical access and no surface instrumentation. This technique is closely related to photoelasticity. Both techniques rely on the uniqueness of the light reflected off or through an object in any given state of stress. The entire measurement process is done remotely without any surface instrumentation and without using a camera. The interferogram is constructed and visual observation will yield fringes on all areas that yielded or moved. The displacement represented by one fringe was determined by Wilson et al. (1977) and is given by the relationship: [d ='1(1) 2 cos 8 where d = displacement of one fringe 6 = incident angle of laser light A = wavelength of light (632.8 x 10-9 meters for Helium-Neon lasers)] In summary, holometry is capable of detecting very small movements of objects under study. It is a very sensitive process that requires laser light and vibration free experiments. Experimental Program Lab Facilities The primary components of the facilities were the laser and the optical table. The light source was 50 milli-watt, Helium-Neon laser. The optical table was a granite slab weighing nearly one ton. All experiments were performed on the optical table. It consists of a large table sitting on air cells similar to car innertubes. Six air cells were placed on top of two layers of wood and Styrofoam. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the vibration free table. Even with these precautions, the experiments still had to be performed at night to reduce potential traffic related vibrations. Room-and-pillar mine models consisting of three different pillar sizes were constructed out of plexiglass. The models were designed to represent three different extraction ratios. Figure 2 shows the models. The extraction ratios were determined by the tributary loading concept (Peng, 1978). These models were the primary component of a seam extraction simulator. A schematic of this simulation device is shown in Fig. 3.

AT temperatures between 1095' and 1347ºC, 13 runs have been made on the diffusion of silicon in iron. In two of the runs the couple compositions were entirely within the loop of the Fe-Si system; the base alloys contained 0.0 and 1.0 wt pct Si. The other runs in which the couples consisted of a 2.3 wt pct Si alloy welded to a 3.7 pct Si alloy were a phase throughout. The alloys were made by melting electrolytic iron and commercially pure silicon. Trace impurities were not determined. The butt welded couples were diffused in an inert atmosphere of argon or hydrogen. After cooling, cuts of two mils or greater thickness were machined parallel to the weld interface. The chips were analyzed for silicon. When the concentration and distance data were examined on the conventional probability plot,' no marked variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration was indicated over the narrow composition ranges employed. Therefore, a single diffusion coefficient is recorded for each run in Table I. The temperatures and atmospheres of the diffusion anneal are listed along with the compositions of the base alloys. For a iron the silicon diffusion coefficient is given by the equation: D = 0.44 e-48,000/RT where R is the gas Constant and T, the absolute temperature. However, since the scatter in the data is fairly large, the activation energy may be in error by as much as 6000 cal per g-atom. The two ? iron points do not permit estimation of the activation energy with any reasonable certainty. They do indicate that the coefficients reported by Smithells2 and Jost,3 based on the work of Fry,4 are much too high. Although very dilute solutions in iron of manganese,5 nickel,8 cobalt,7 and molybdenum8 give dif- fusion coefficients quite close to those obtained for self-diffusion in iron, the silicon values are considerably higher, though of the same order of magnitude. This seems to be consistent with the fact that the silicon atom is the only one of those listed here which is appreciably smaller than iron. For the second consecutive year, the production of crude petroleum in New York has fallen below the 5,000,000-bbl. Mark that had prevailed previously since 1937. In 1945, the output totaled 4,658,000 bbl., a decrease of slightly more, than one per cent from the 1944 production. This total represents 2 per cent of the stripper-well production of the United States, which in turn is I 3 per cent of the total annual yield of the nation's petroleum.

(Communication to the Secretary) : The investigation so fully described by Mr. Laudig was undertaken with the idea of determining if it is possible to learn by expesiment, without an actual trial in the furnace, what economical results can be expected from the use of a given ore-mixture. The research was necessarily preliminary, and the results obtained are only to be depended upon so far as they relate to the samples treated. With the exception of the ores obtained from the stock-piles of the Buffalo Furnace Company, and several samples taken at a neighboring furnace, there is no certainty that the ores represented the average shipments of any mine. For this reason the publication of the names of the ores might do producers a great injustice. The names of the ores arc therefore withheld, and their identity is further .veiled by leaving out of the analyses the phosphorus-contents. The investigation was begun with the preconceived idea that the rate of reduction would be found to be dependent upon the accessibility of the particles of the ore to the action of the reducing-gas. In other words, a spongy, brown hematite or a very fine Mesabi would be the easiest reduced. I had formed a scale with No. 21 first, No. 30 second, No. 1 third, Nos. 5, 24, 25 and the remaining Mesabis fourth, etc , which is sufficient to show how much actual results differ from a judgment based on physical characteristics. The installation in 1948 of a Humphrey spiral concentrator section at the Hill-Trumbull plant of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. is the latest commercial method on the Mesabi Range being used for the recovery of fine iron ore. In two stages of concentration 84 spirals treat approximately 120 long tons per hour of minus 1/8 in. ore. These spirals augment the production of the heavy-density plant which recovers the plus 44 in. iron from the plant crude ore. Structure of the ore is such that, when crushed, about 50 pct of the plant crude is minus 1/8 in. size. After desliming in a 66 in. Akins classifier, grinding the classifier product in a ball mill and again desliming in a 78 in. Akins classifier about 15 pct of the crude ore remains to be treated in the spiral plant.

Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there llas been increasing interest in these ores. Tlie Transactions contain numerous references to t1ieln.l This iron ore, which is shipped to the Tinited States in the nodulizecl state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of RInpari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finishrtl iron products. The present point of coilsn~iil)tion ol ILlapri ore is at Sparrow's Poi111, where hlayari pig iron of ally desiretl coml>osition is made. The composition of the dried ore is about as follows: Iron -29 per cent., silica 3 pc.r cent., nickel 1 per cciit., chroiniun~ 1.5 per cent., alumina 11 per cent., ant1 coinbined water 13 per cent. The scale md subscale reaction products were identified and their rates of formation were studied in air over the range 1600" to 2000°F (871 " to 1149°C) for periods of up to 400 hr and for hoth the solution-annealed and aged conditions. The effect of prior sltrface preparation on suhscale oxidation was also studied The general oxidation behavior of both Ni-Cr-Mo-Al-Ti type alloys was similar. A surface film of a, Al2O3, forms immediately on exposure Subsequent oxidation continued at a linear rate (QL = 55 * 5 kcal per mole) as colonies of Cr2O3 nucleated at the A12O3/gas interface Further oxidation proceeded at a paraholic rate zvhiclz could he fitted to two successive rate constants. During paraholic oxidation, and depending on temperature, the scale consisted of Cr2O3, NiCr2O4 , and TiO2 with traces of NiO. In the case of Rene 41, the activation energy of both paraholic processes was 66 * 3 kcal per mole suggesting that diffusion of cations tlzrozrgh Cr2O3 was the rate -determining process. An unusual decrease in the oxidation of Udimet 700 at 1900°F where a spinel of Ni(A1,Crh0, zuas the predominant reaction product prevented the accurate assignment of activation energies for this composition. In both alloys internal oxidation of Al2O3 commenced shortly after parabolic scaling was observed. Prolonged exposure prod7tced intemal oxidation of TiN, and in Udimet 700 a complex Mo-Ni nitride was also found. At 1900oF, the subscale reactions in Udimet 700 undergo an inversion which parallels the decrease in surface oxidation; internal oxidation ceases hut is replaced by the formation of "spherodized" 3.' colonies. Surface-preparation techniqtles which introduce appreciable working, such as coarse surface grinding or grit blasting. increase the amount of alloy depletion and internal oxidation in Reni 41. The reverse is true of Udimet 700 for which electropolished or mechanically polished specimens show much more subscale oxidation than strongly worked stirfaces. The strongest commercial nickel-base alloys presently available are generic to the Ni-Cr-Mo-A1-Ti base which exploits the precipitation of Ni3(A1,Ti) as the main strengthening mechanism, while relying on solid-solution strengthening by molybdenum and chromium reinforced by the pre- cipitation of carbides to attain maximum properties. This study characterizes the oxidation behavior of Rene 41, the strongest alloy of the Ni-Cr-A1-Ti type commercially available in sheet form, and Udimet 700, whose higher aluminum and titanium content allows it to exhibit one of the more attractive combinations of high-temperature properties available in a wrought product. The scaling processes of complex, type nickel-base alloys have received relatively little attention. Malamand and vidal as well as Poulignier et al.2'3 have determined the composition gradients across the metal/oxide interface produced by high-temperature oxidation and considered the effect of surface perature, Limited weight-gain data has also been published by Fere 5 for alloys of this type and Radavich6 has identified the reaction products on Udimet 500 and Inco 702 after oxidation at 1832°F. Reference can, of course, be made to the excellent reviews of Kubaschewski and Hopkins7 or Ignatov and Shamgunova8 for a summary of the data available on the oxidation of binary and ternary alloy systems which are related to the more complex alloys considered here. EXPERIMENTAL The analyses of the different commercial heats studied are given in Table I. Using the experimental procedures previously established,9 continuous weight-gain data were obtained on both heats of Rene 41 sheet (A and B) and 150-mil-thick slices of cast Udimet 700. Subscale oxidation reactions were followed by static exposure of cylindrical specimens obtained from swaged Rene 41 (Heat C) and Udimet 700 (Heats E and F). In brief, continuous weight-gain tests were performed on specimens with a surface area of 10 to 12 sq cm. These were abraded through 600 grit Sic paper, electropolished to 2p rms in an electrolyte of 10 pct H2So4 in ethanol, and lightly etched in 10 pct HCl in ethanol before final washing and rinsing in ethanol. All continuous weight-gain data were obtained in dried (-70°F dew point) flowing (1 liter per min) air to an accuracy of +0.1 mg. Subscale oxidation processes were followed by the metallographic examination of 0.5-in-diam by 1.0-in.-long specimens. After an initial center-less grinding, various additional surface treatments were employed to determine the effect of surface preparation on subscale oxidation processes. Before exposure in zirconia crucibles, all samples were lightly etched in 10 pct HCl-ethanol, washed in ethanol, and dried. DECISION to build a mill at the Bayard property was made in May 1942. Western-Knapp Engineering Co., of San Francisco, assisted by engineers of U. S. Smelting, handled the design and construction. Much of the milling equipment was moved from the Company's mill at Goldroad, Ariz. Wartime restrictions necessitated wood construction and paper sheathing except for structures adjacent to the Bullfrog shaft. Construction started in September 1942 and milling in March 1943. Bayard ores are processed in a single-ection mill. About half of the ore treated during the past year was hoisted through the Bullfrog shaft and the rest was trucked from other shafts. Coarse storage includes four bins, two of 120 tons each for Bullfrog ores and two of 85 to 120 tons each, served by a truck ramp. The low capacity figure refers to
