INTRODUCTION Laboratory studies on the deformability and strength of intact rocks generally involve the uniaxial compression test, the standard triaxial compression test and direct or indirect tension tests. If [al ,a2 ,a3] are principal stresses [(al>a2>a3)] with compression taken as positive and tension taken as negative, the applied stress field for each one of these tests can be represented as shown in Fig. 1. However, for most in-situ conditions, such as those that exist at any point around an underground excavation, the stress field is truly three-dimensional or multiaxial [(al+ a2+a3)] and none of the tests shown in Fig. 1 can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of the rock. There are special cases for which one of the three principal stresses vanishes. Biaxial loading of rocks in-situ takes place, for instance, when rocks deform and fail in plane stress conditions. This can occur in a free unloaded surface of a rock structure such as in the wall of an underground excavation or a rock slope. Parallel to the free surface, the stress field components can be both compressive [(al>a2>0)], both tensile [(O>a2>a3)], or mixed, one component being compressive and the other one tensile [(U~>O>U~)]. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of 25 true biaxial tests that have been conducted on cubical specimens of Indiana Limestone using the multiaxial cell available at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The tests include uniaxial compression and tension, biaxial compression and combined biaxil compression- tension. Flexible fluid cushions and brush bearing platens were used for compressive and tensile loading respectively in order to minimize loading end effects on the test specimens. The hydrogen-water vapor ratio at which Fe-Cr alloy, chromium oxide, andiron chromite coexist in equilibrium was determined between 900" and 1200°C. A thermogravimetric method was used to determine equilibrium conditions. The results fit a straight-line relationship in the temperature region studied, and are given by Reduction experiments were also performed to confirm the results of the equilibrium investigation. ThE oxygen pressures at which Fe-Cr alloy, chromium oxide, and iron chromite coexist in equilibrium have been previously determined by Boericke and angert,' Morozov and Novokharski,' and Katsura and uan. Only one determination (at 1300°C) was made by Katsura and Muan, but it agrees with the results of orozov and Novokharski. The results of Boericke and Bangert, however, differ appreciably from the results of these investigators. Previous studies have assumed that the equilibrium metallic phase is pure iron, but Dahl and Van vlack have shown that the iron contains from about 1 wt pct Cr at 1000°C to over 2 wt pct above 1300°C. The chromium oxide also contains a small amount of iron in solid solution. In the present study, hydrogen-water vapor mixtures were equilibrated with the condensed phases, using a therrnogravimetric method to determine equilibrium conditions. The reaction can be written EXPERIMENTAL General Procedure. The starting material was a sintered pellet of Fe2O3-Cr2O3 solid solution with a hole in the center, and was placed on a fused silica hook. This assembly was raised into the preheated hot zone of the furnace in a helium atmosphere, hooked onto a fused silica hangdown suspended from one arm of an Ainsworth Model RV-AU-1 recording balance, and the starting weight determined. A flowing hydrogen-water vapor atmosphere was then exchanged for the helium by evacuation, and the sample reduced until the weight loss indicated the sample composition to be in the alloy-Cr2O3-chromite field. The tem- perature was adjusted incrementally until constant sample weight was achieved for several hours, to within 0.02 mg. A hydrogen-water vapor atmosphere of different composition was then admitted, and the same procedure carried out. At the end of a series of determinations, the sample was examined by X-ray diffraction to verify the presence of the desired phases. Microscopic examination of the silica hook showed no interaction with the sample, nor did it lose any weight. Several criteria were used to insure equilibrium besides constancy of weight. For a given hydrogen-water vapor composition, equilibrium was approached from both oxidizing and reducing sides by varying the furnace temperature slightly. The resulting slow weight loss or gain was observed for several hours. Constant weight could be re-established by returning to the original furnace temperature. The last criterion used was varying the relative amounts of the phases by further reduction or oxidation, and observing any changes in temperature required for constant weight for a given hydrogen-water vapor atmosphere. None were observed. This procedure was essentially the same as approaching the equilibrium from oxidizing and reducing sides, but larger weight excursions were carried out. Sample Preparation. Reagent-grade Fe2O3 and Cr83 powders were mixed in the desired proportions and heated in air at 1250°C for 2 hr. The mixture was re-ground and heated in air overnight at 1250°C. X-ray diffraction showed complete solid-solution formation as a result of this procedure. The solid solution was then pressed into l/2-in.-diam pellets using Carbowax 4000 as a binder. The hole was drilled in the center, and the pellets were sintered 24 hr at 1250°C in air on a bed of Fe2O3-Cr2O3 of the same composition, contained in an alundum boat. After cooling, the pellet surfaces were abraded with 310 paper to remove any surface compositional differences, such as loss of Cr2O3. Chemical analysis of the sintered pellets was 67.16 wt pct CrP3 and 33.02 wt pct Fe203. Atmosphere Generation and Control. The hydrogen-water vapor atmospheres were generated by passing Matheson ultrahigh-purity hydrogen, with no further purification, through two water bubblers contained in a constant-temperature water bath. Since the water-vapor dew points required in this study were below room temperature, the bath was insulated, and was cooled by thermoelectric-immersion devices. The bath temperature was controlled to 0.0l0C. Since rather high flow rates of about 900 ml per min were used through the furnace tube, an independent check of the dew point was made to insure saturation of the hydrogen by the water vapor. MR. NEILSON was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city: In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. In 1871, when the Logan Iron & Steel Co., of Burnham, Pa., failed, Mr. Neilson was appointed receiver, re-organized the company, became' its General Manager, and spent more than four years in this work. In the meantime, he became interested in the Freedom forge of the same place, and, with Mr. Wm. Burnham and Mr. Milton Brosius, laid the foundations for what is now the Standard Steel Works. From Jan. 1, 1877, to April 1, 1890, he was General Manager of these works, and closely associated with the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In 1878 he was in charge of the first consignment of Baldwin locomotives to Europe, which, with a picked crew of men from Baldwin's, he took to Eydtkennen, Russia, and placed in service. Now that low-carbon steel is manufactured successfully in large quantities by the Bessemer process, and threatens to displace wroughtiron for nearly all purposes, it becomes interesting to find how its Specific gravity compares with that of wrought-iron. The general name "steel" is retained in this paper to designate that metal made by the Bessemer process, which might be more properly called " ingot iron." But the former name seems to be quite firmly established in the iron trade. This steel offers many inducements to the manufacturer of architectural iron, by reason of its hornogencity, and the large masses in which it may be readily moulded. The steel from which these determinations have been made, was produced in four-ton heats and cast into ingots of about 3100 Ibs. weight, having an average section 14'' by 14". These ingots were rolled in a blooming-mill to a section about 24" by 14", cut into slabs and rolled in a plate-mill to a plate .065" to .165" thick, and about 1411 in width. The specific gravity was obtained from pieces of this plate. The metal showed by analysis .10 to .12 per cent. carbon,.33 to .45 manganese,.060 to .072 sulphur,.075 to .082 phosphorus, and .010 silicon. The samples were not annealed, but were brought to a bright surface with a file. All figures given are averages of not less than three determinations on separate pieces from the same plate. The variation in the figures from which the averages were made in no case exceeded .015.

We have had two examples now in the world-first, Italy, and secondly, Japan-where we have applied sanctions. When we got ready to apply sanctions to Italy that would hurt, they went to war. In the Far East, when we applied sanctions against Japan, in the latter part of 1941, there was a quick reaction, and the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

A tentative plan for the Colorado Meeting has been formulated as follows: One day will be spent at Denver, one day at Colorado Springs, one day at Cripple Creek, a trip by automobile to the top of Pike's Peak, one day at Pueblo, one day at Leadville. All the principal mines and mills of the districts mentioned will be visited, including the gold mines in Cripple Creek, the lead, zinc, and steel works. of Pueblo, the production of ferro-molybdenum by electric furnace at Leadville, etc. Special arrangements are being made for the social entertainment of ladies at all points; one evening at Colorado Springs will be devoted to a reception and dance, and the usual dinner will he given on another evening. The positions of twin reflections in electron-dijjcraction patterns obtained from thin metal foils may he calculated for any twin in any crystal structure by means of an elementary application of vector algebra, General equations for the four classical orientation relationships are presented using the superscript and subscript notation of the tensor calculus, which is briefly described. As an example of the application of these expressions, the case of twinned rhomhohedral crystals, and hence as a special cased twinned cubic crystals, is examined. CONSIDERABLE interest has recently been shown in the interpretation of electron-diffraction patterns obtained from twinned regions of thin metal foils. In the present paper, it is shown that the necessary information may be obtained directly for all twins in any crystal structure by means of a very elementary application of vector algebra. The equations involved are most conveniently presented by making use of the very powerful superscript and subscript notation of the tensor calculus. The use of this notation will first be described and then applied to the problem of calculating diffraction patterns for any twinned crystal. Finally, as an example of the application of the method, the specific case of twinned rhombohedra1 crystals will be considered.

Many full-scale waterflooding operations are preceded by pilot floods, one purpose of which is to provide an estimate of recoverable oil. A laboratory model study was made to determine the influence of the producing wells' effective productivity on the oil recovery efficiency of single five-spot pilots, as well as single injection well pilot floods. The effective productivity is indicated by the value of Condition Ratio, defined as the actual well productivity to that of on undamaged and non-stimulated, normal-sized well in the same formation. The effects of initial gas satrcration and mubility ratio on recovery eficiency were also investigated in this model study. Model test results skowed that at favorable mobiliry ratios, a five-spot pilot flood can provide a direct quantitative estimate of the recoverable oil in the pilot area. If the pilot producer's Candition Ratio is 2.2 or more, upwards of 90 per cent of the recoverable oil in the pilot area is recovered from the inside producer, regqrdless of the mobility ratio or initial gas saturation. This Condition Ratio can be achieved with preyent fracturing techniques. Model studies also showed that over the range of imposed injection pressure differences and regional pressure gradients normally encountered in field operations, there was no effect on the recovery efficiency of a five-spot pilot waterflood. Model studies of single injection well pilot waterfloods showed that with no initial gas saturation, the total oil recovery at the offset producing wells can indicate the oil recovery possible by full-scale waterflooding. It is essential that the Condition Ratios of the offset wells be above 1.4. If an initial gas saturation exists prior to water injection, the recoverable oil cannot be directly evaluated by a single injection well pilot flood. However, the production per formance of such a flood can be used to provide information on volumetric sweep efficiency. INTRODUCTION Oil reservoirs are conlplex structures and cannot always be fully studied in the laboratory. Therefore, many operators consider it prudent to evaluate a waterflood prospect by means of a pilot flood. Pilot waterfloods generally involve one of two well arrangements: a single five-spot pilot waterflood, involving four injectors and an internal pilot producing well; and a single injection well pilot flood (sometimes called an inverted five-spot pilot) having one injector and four sur- rounding pilot producers. Some pilot floods are composed of multiple five-spot pilot patterns. To yield information applicable to field-wide performance, the pilot must be located in a representative portion of the reservoir. Pilot floods generally are conducted for one or more of the following reasons: (1) to determine whether water could be injected at desirably high rates, (2) to determine whether an oil bank or zone of increased oil saturation is formed by water injection, and (3) to estimate the oil recovery by waterflooding. Many of the early pilot water-floods were conducted for only the first two reasons. As soon as a buzz in oil production was obtained in the pilot, water injection was initiated throughout the entire lease or field. A number ot laboratory studies have been directed toward determining conditions under which a pilot flood could yield a quantitative estimate of the oil recovery possible by full-scale pattern flooding. One of the early studies of single five-spot pilot flooding' showed that well damage to the inside pilot producer could reduce the total amount of oil recovered. In a study of the single injection well pilot flood pattern,' the results indicated that if the model boundaries were no closer than a half-well spacing beyond the pilot pattern, the pilot performance in the laboratory is unaffected by these boundaries. In another study,? he effect of initial gas saturation and mobility ratio on the ratio of production to injection rate for various groupings of five-spot patterns was defined by mathematical and analog methods. In a study4 involving both potentiometric and flow model experiments at a mobiliry ratio of unity, four different pilot patterns were studied. These included a single five-spot, a single injection well pilot, a cluster of four single injection well pilots and six inverted five-spots. In this study the ratio of well diameter to the distance between injection and producing wells was held constant at 1:1000. The effect of the 7 ratio-—the ratio of the pressure drawdown at the producing wells to the pressure build-up at the injection wells on the pilot performance-was studied. The values of 7 ratio ranged from 0 to 0.34. Results showed that both the total oil recovery and the total fluid production from the pilot relative to the cumulative injection increased with increasing values of the 7 ratio. The effect of both the ratio of injection to producing rates and mobility ratio on the oil recovery performance of a liquid-saturated single five-spot pilot flood was studied in a series of flow model tests.5 Rate ratios ranged from one to four, and mobility rates ranged from 0.1 to 10. Resulls of these tests showed that at low rate ratios, the pilot producers may recover up to four times the recover-

A commercially available microprocessor-based system capable of monitoring 512 channels has been interfaced with monitors for radon, working level, air velocity, and fan power. The basic system utilizes both 280 and 8080 microprocessors in a desktop central processing unit (CPU). CPU hardware includes keyboard, video display (CRT), and disk drive; a printer is used to keep permanent data records. Signals from all channels are transmitted to the computer in digital form where they are processed for alarm status. Software developed for the system allows for audiovisual alarms in the event of low and high readings, rate change, change of state, or communica- tion failure. Up to six channels can be continuously displayed on the CRT for current readings. Shift reports and trend logs may be generated to help the ventilation engineer determine average working levels and ventilation effectiveness. Additional software permits the operator to program command sequences which may be used to automatically restart fans after a power outage.

“IT is decreed by Divine Providence that those who know what they ought to do and then take care to do it properly, for the most part meet ' with good fortune in all. they, undertake; on the other hand, misfortune overtakes the indolent and those who are careless in their work." These are the words of Georgius Agricola. to. those who are engaged in mining, taken from De Re Metallica, Book II, second paragraph. Safety in mining is just that simple, when considered on the basis of the individual. The words imply a .knowledge of what is to be done and how to do it. Armed with this knowledge it is only necessary to proceed with diligence and care to achieve the desired end without personal or financial mishap. Obviously the complication arises in the large company operating numerous mines and the consequent ramifications of company structure embodying management, supervision, engineering, and labor. Agricola stresses later on the importance of supervision and direction by the owners of the mine. We know that this principle is recognized today by the frequency with which the statement is repeated "a safety program must stem from management." People charged with responsibility for safety and management also stress the importance of securing the cooperation of the employees in formulating and carrying . out safe working practices. Safety committees consisting of employees, supervisors, and. representatives of management are recognized as the most practical method of achieving safety consciousness in all levels of mining company organization.

AN adequate supply of crystalline quartz of piezoelectric grade and size continues to be of fundamental importance to the U. S. Army Signal Corps. Current electronic development programs of the Armed Forces depend upon the use of quartz crystals in all applications where accurate frequency control is necessary. In peacetime this' may not seem too significant, but in planning for possible national defense emergencies, an adequate supply of piezoelectric grade raw quartz is just as important as an adequate supply of some of the more publicized strategic minerals. Prior to World War II, the Signal Corps accepted the use of quartz crystals for frequency-control purposes in essentially all electronic communication, navigation, and radar equipment operating in the audio and radio frequency spectra up to and including the ultra-high-frequency channels. Over 4,000; 000 lb of radio-grade quartz was required between January 1942 and V.J Day. Use of such a large quantity of crystal units was necessary in order to establish and maintain, with a minimum of effort, clear and definite frequency channels of greater stability than could be obtained by any other means. This policy was justified on the basis that quartz was without a peer as a frequency-controlling element. Military and civilian uses of quartz in the field, as well as laboratory studies, have confirmed this premise and no means of highly stable frequency control, superior to quartz, has been discovered. It appears certain that the demand for use of quartz for frequency control purposes will continue at a high level.

The plan recently started for the organization of a Division of Re-search and Statistics in the American Petroleum Institute will probably shortly be consummated. It is proposed to expend $500,000 annually for this research work. The organization's work, as now outlined, pro-vides for a Technical Director, who is to be in general charge of all the work. He is to be assisted by Consulting Technical Experts, who are to be distinguished specialists in the industry and are to serve without pay. In addition, there is to be an advisory committee made up of one representative from the Bureau of Standards, Bureau of Mines, Geo-logical Survey, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engi-neers, Society of Automotive Engineers, National Automobile Chamber, of Commerce, American Society for Testing Materials, American Chem-ical Society, and the National Research Council. This committee is to meet regularly to discuss the problems of the petroleum industry. An engineer and chief economist are to assist the Director.- The econ-omist is to be in charge of statistics, economic phases of the industry, and publicity. It is the intention to centralize in the Institute all infor-mation that may be required by the States or Federal Government, which would be of value to members of the Institute. This includes prices of crude oil, refined products, and natural gas. The engineer of the division is to coordinate the research work to be undertaken by, the subdivisions of production, chemical engineering, utilization, and special research. The two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of a solid are its intrinsic properties, e.g.,grain size, and the operative stress system. The latter may be modified in laminates by the presence of weak interfaces. This is studied in notch-impact tests on a mode1 system of mild steel laminates containing a variety of interfaces. The effect of these is evaluated in terms of the ductile/cleavage transition. Two laminate geometries are distinguished, here called "crack-arrester " and "crack-divider". In both, cleavage is inhibited. This arises because of relaxation of a state of triaxial tension. In the crack-avrester laminates, cleavage initiated at a notch is confined to the layer containing the notch. In crack-cliuider laminates, a thick specimen behaves as the Sum of a number of thinner ones. Additional benefit may derive from improved intritnsic propevties of- the lanlinate layers arising from greater deformation in their manufacture. It has long been recognized that the two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of solids are their intrinsic properties (e.g., grain size friction stress,3 distribution of second phase particles4) and the operative stress system under which fracture occurs. In solids that show a ductile/cleavage transition, cleavage is favored by the presence of a notch. This is because triaxial tensions, generated by the localized plastic constraint at the notch, are operative when fracture occurs.= Anything that suppresses these triaxial tensions will be unfavorable to cleavage. Such suppression may possibly occur in laminates containing weak interfaces and the purpose of the present paper is to explore this possibility. Two basic laminate geometries, here termed "crack-avrester" and "cvack-divider", are examined. They are illustrated in Fig. 1. With the crack-arrester laminates, there is the possibility that, when the fracture crack approaches the interface, this, if weak, may delaminate due to the tensile stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack.= If this happens, energy will be used in delamination, the crack will be completely blunted, and the triaxial tension associated with the crack will be relaxed. To fracture the second portion of the laminate, crack reinitiation will be necessary and, because of the relaxation of the triaxial tension, this reinitiation will occur under conditions of nearly uniaxial tension, which are unfavorable to cleavage. Thus there is the possibility of cleavage suppression in the second and subsequent subunits of a crack-arrester laminate. With the crack-divider geometry, there is again the possibility of delamination at the interfaces. This will divide the crack into a series of cracks propagating through the individual laminate subunits. If these are sufficiently thin, the triaxial tension will be relaxed towards a state of biaxial tension in each of them. Thus, with the crack-divider laminates, there is again the possibility of cleavage inhibition. In the present work, these possibilities are explored using a notched impact test on mild steel laminates bonded with soft solder, silver solder or copper. Even if delamination does not occur, it is still possible that cleavage may be inhibited in laminates. With the crack-arrester geometry, the cleavage crack in the first layer may be blunted and arrested by plastic deformation in the laminate bond, if this is ductile. Partial relaxation of the stress transmitted ahead of the crack into the second layer will then result and this will reduce the significance of this stress in the fracture of the second layer. With the crack-divider geometry, there cannot be much effect in the absence of delamination unless a large amount of energy is absorbed in rupturing the ductile material. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The composition of the mild steel (wt pet) was: 0.04 C, 0.29 Mn, 0.01 Si, 0.006 P, 0.008 S. "As-received" plate was annealed for 2 hr at 900°C and slowly cooled to give a grain size of 0.04 mm. The laminates were made by brazing or soldering together mild steel plates 8 by 3 in. by various thicknesses. These were obtained from the annealed plate by machining, so that the intrinsic material properties were .kept constant. Laminates containing two to six steel layers were studied using standard Charpy V-notch specimens cut from the bonded plates. For the past 3 years, the authors have been conducting research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to improve the process of excavation by drilling and blasting. The approach followed has been experimental where the development of stress waves and fractures initiated at the bore hole have been investigated in order to obtain a complete understanding of the dynamic fracture process. The second step in the approach has been to introduce modifications in the drill and blast procedure which will permit closer control of the fracture process. The laboratory investigations involve high speed photography where the dynamic fracture process is recorded with a Cranz-Schardin 1, 2 multiple-spark camera. The camera is equipped with 16 spark gaps which are pulsed at 25 K volts to produce an intense but very short (0.5 sec) flash of light. The camera is capable of recording 16 photographs of a dynamic event at framing rates which can be varied from 30,000 to 1,500,000 frames per second. The exposure time is sufficiently short to stop motion associated with detonating explosive charges and to make visible the details of the fracture process at a bore hose. The bore hole in a massive intact rock formation is modelled with a two dimensional plate containing a circular hole to represent the bore hole. The model material employed is a transparent polyester known commercially as Homalite 100.* This polymeric material is extremely brittle as evidenced by its extremely low fracture toughness of [ ]. The fracture toughness is a measure of the ability of a material to resist the propagation of flaws or small cracks. In comparison, Schmidt3 has recently measured the fracture toughness of Salem limestone and determined [ ]. Thus, the Homalite 100 should closely model the brittle nature of rock where fractures occur at small flaws and propagate without any apparent plastic deformation. Homalite 100 is also birefringent, which indicates that it becomes optically anisotropic when subjected to either static or dynamic loads. Circularly polarized light is transmitted through the loaded Homalite 100 model in a polariscope4 and the birefringence produces an optical interference pattern which is called a fringe pattern. For dynamic photoelasticity, the multiple-spark camera is equipped with polaroid filters to produce the circularly polarized light required to generate the photoelastic fringe patterns. An example of a singlespark frame showing a fringe pattern from a typical experiment is presented in [Fig. 1]. The photograph was taken 0.000072 sec (72 sec) after the detonation of the explosive charge. The circular fringes are due to the outgoing dilatational or P type stress wave and travel with a velocity of 85,000 in. per sec (2260 m/sec) in the Homalite 100. The P wave is followed by a second lower velocity stress wave known as the shear or S type wave which propagates at a velocity of 49,000 in. per sec (1245 m/sec). In the local neighborhood of the bore hole, several radial cracks are visible. These cracks propagate at essentially a constant velocity of 15,000 in. per sec (380 m/sec) prior to arrest. The fringes about the crack tips and in the local region of the bore hole are primarily due to the residual gases contained in the bore hole after the explosive charge was detonated. Sixteen frames similar to this one are recorded during the experiment to give full field visualization of the dynamic event at 16 discrete times over its duration. The fringe order number N is related to the difference in the principal stresses of and 02 according to a stress optic law4: [ ] where f0 = material fringe value, and h = model thickness. The wholefield dynamic-fringe patterns provide a basis for simultaneously observing the interaction between propagating cracks and the stresses which drive these cracks. Fracture Control Experiments Improvements in the efficiency of the drill and blast procedures must involve close control of the fracture process following the detonation of an explosive charge in a bore hole. By control it is implied that the number of cracks initiated and the location of each crack on the wall of the bore hole can be specified. Control also, involves orienting each crack and maintaining the crack path and velocity until the specified crack length is achieved. If the entire fracture process can be controlled, then rounds can be designed to optimize volume removed. fragment size and minimize costs. One area of blasting where fracture control is vitally important is in underground excavation where the strength and stability of the rock walls must be maintained and smoothness and precision of the walls must be achieved. The smooth blasting method is one of the most commonly employed procedures for achieving some degree of fracture control. In smooth blasting, the central region of material is first removed, and then the final row of closely spaced undercharged or cushioned holes are fired to remove the final volume and produce a smooth wall. In some instances, unloaded or dummy holes between the loaded holes are recommended to guide the fracture plane. This investigation pertained to an evaluation of 3 features of the smooth blasting process. These included (a) the effect of stress reinforcement on fracture by simultaneously firing 2 charges; (b) the influence of a dummy hole on control of the fracture planes between 2 simultaneously fired charge holes; and (c) the influence of dummy hole spacing on fracture plane control.

A marked decrease in drilling during 1937 in Indiana seemed to have no undesirable effect upon the oil and gas industry. Instead, production figures for oil showed a small increase over those for the preceding year, although not so much gas was marketed as in 1936. Drilling activity was centered in proven areas, and the proportion of dry holes to the number of wells drilled decreased somewhat. During 1937, including old wells drilled to deeper horizons, 134 wells were completed in Indiana, of which 39 were oil wells, 39 gas wells, and 56 dry holes. Nearly 75 per cent of the holes were drilled in proven areas. Of the 36 wells drilled in wildcat areas, only four found commercial production. Wildcat wells were especially numerous in Vigo, Pike, Perry and Spencer Counties. Exploratory drilling activity in Vigo County resulted in part from the drilling of the discovery well in the new Prairie Creek field. In Pike County, wildcat wells were drilled in the search for new supplies of gas to meet the demand in the southwestern portion of Indiana. Drilling in both proven and wildcat areas in Perry and Spencer Counties continued to be heavy, because of the presence of shallow Missis-sippian sands and the resulting low cost of drilling and equipping. At the end of the year, 42 of the wells started in 1937 were not completed. Only a few locations were drilled in the old Trenton field, but the wells, many of them 40 years old, continued to furnish a small supply of gas for domestic consumption. Oil production in the Jay County portion of the Trenton area was nearly twice that of 1936, owing in part to a vacuum system installed on several leases. The Harrison County (Laconia) gas field is being developed northward to offset water encroaching from the south. This water in the black shale threatens to put an end to the steady production that this field has furnished for many years. During 1937, the Oaktown gas field again furnished more gas than any other field, but production in that area showed a marked decrease over the marketed gas for 1936. IN these days the headlines and spotlight have been focused largely upon the new processes developed and new plants erected to meet the multiplied demands for mineral products required for prosecution of the war. By comparison, the less spectacular achievements of the miner, who is meeting the demand for raw material without which these processes and plants would be useless, have received little attention. Attendance at the mining meetings here reported was small, averaging about 35 to 40, but interest was as keen as ever, and evidenced to your reporter that the miner is no less on the job than is the metallurgist. It is evident that the mine operators are not neglecting any improved methods and practices in their struggle to produce more in the face of diminishing labor supply.

Induction, nuclear and sonic well-logging methods were employed in a Green River formation oil-shale analysis and evaluation study conducted in northeastern Uintah County, Utah. The physical and chemical properties of an oil-shale section, previously cored and assayed by conventional methods, were used to evaluate the response of the various logs. The logging program was designed to measure variable properties of oil shale which relate to oil-yield potential in order that a relationship between assay-oil yield and log-determined properties could be identified, thereby permitting a direct determination of yield potential from logs alone. All of the major oil-shale zones and section ttlarkers are recognizable on the logs used in the study. The relationship between the response of the Density and Sonic logs and the assay-oil yield in gallons per ton was suficient to perinit the derivation of equations expressing the relationships. These equations can be used to determine the potential oil yield in gallons per ton of an oil-shale zone or section. The Neutron log response distinguishes the rich oil-shale intervals from the lean intervals, but does not appear to permit establishment of a quantitative relationship. The Garnma-Ray and Induction logs indicate only a qualitative relationship to oil-shale yields. Logging oil shale by Gamma-Gamrna Density and/ or Sonic logging methods will permit a fast, economical and accurate means of evaluating the potential yield of oil-shale deposits. Considerable sums of money have been allocated to Green River formation oil-shale evaluation during the past years by both private enterprise and Federal and state governments. The result of the work accomplished to date is commendable, but the task of fully exploring and evaluating one of the world's greatest reserves of potential energy for economical exploitation is enormous and much information is still needed. Present methods of evaluation consist primarily of sampling and assaying the oil shale for potential yield. The data received are excellent, but are both costly (inasmuch as it requires funds specifically allocated for the evaluation purpose) and time-consuming (as each representative sample must be assayed in the laboratory by specially trained personnel). At the present time, the Green River formation oil-shale province is one of the most active areas in the Rocky Mountain region for exploratory oil and gas drilling. This activity could play a twofold role and serve the function of spear-heading many oil-shale evaluation programs, as it could provide both cutting samples for assaying, geophysical data and modern well logs. This paper deals with a recent study conducted on Green River formation oil shale in which the application of induction, sonic and nuclear well logs to oil-shale evaluation was tested and proved. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS Oil shale may be described as siliceous marlstone, rich in solid organic matter called "kerogen". Kerogen is only slightly soluble in organic solvents, but it will decompose and yield oil vapors and gas when heated to destructive distillation temperatures at about 800 F. The mineral constituents of Green River formation oil shale are found in essentially uniform proportions with one another. The dominant types are, in the general order of abundance, dolomite, calcite, feldspars and quartz. Kerogen is also essentially uniform in its composition, and is about 80 per cent carbon and 10 per cent hydrogen by weight. The ratio of kerogen to the mineral constituents determines the richness or potential yield of the oil shale. This ratio also determines the total physical and chemical properties of the rock and provides a basis by which oil-shale richness may be determined from well logs. Because Green River formation oil shale was deposited in a lacustrine environment, the lithology is laterally consistent over wide areas. The vertical section consists predominantly of thin bands of alternating rich and lean oil shale which have been described by Bradley' as varves. The varves are occasionally broken by thin bands of volcanic ash and tuff and by zones of lean vugular oil shale. The effect that the thin non-oil shale beds and vugular zones would have on the well log analysis was a prime concern in the study. To cope with this possible problem, the logs used in the study were of two types: (1) logs believed to respond favorably to those properties of oil shale which are dependent upon the kero-gen-to-mineral ratio, these logs being the Gamma-Gamma Density log, the Sonic log and the Neutron log; and (2) logs that would respond to litho-logies and properties within the oil-shale section not associated with yield that might result in anomalous responses by the yield-measuring logs. In leaching ores at atmospheric pressure it is often desirable to apply high reagent concentration, long exposure time, and elevated temperature. All of these conditions tend to increase the treatment cost. In conventional leaching, direct or countercurrent, the leaching fluid is needed to transport the solids through the process. This requires relatively large volumes of fluid and limits the reagent concentration economically feasible. The relatively high dilution also increases fuel cost if leaching is to be done above ambient temperature. Heating of water is expensive.
