RECENTLY, areas of abnormal rock pressure have been drilled on the Gulf Coast of the United States. These pressures may be caused by the recent and pronounced raising of some of the structures without loss of the formation pressure that existed when the reservoir was developing and the producing sand much more deeply buried. It is possible also that a permeable fissure may connect a shallow accumulation of gas with the gas cap of a much deeper reservoir of oil, gas and water. The pressures are so great that dependence on blowout-prevention equipment alone is hazardous to life and property. Fortunately, wells with excessive casing-head pressures, such as the Stanolind Oates No. 1 of the South Houston field, an 8700-ft. gas well with 6000 lb. per sq. in., and the near-by Stanolind Candelari No. 1, and 8100-ft. gas well with 5000 lb. per sq. in., have not blown out and cratered. A case is on record of drill pipe in a, well in Harris County, Texas, (Oates No. 1) rotating for 8 hr. through blowout-prevention rants holding a back pressure of 2900 1b. per sq. in. at the casinghead after the mud was altered by salt-water intrusion. Such conditions warrant the use of extremely heavy muds having low viscosity, made from galena (PbS) or specially prepared mixtures of hematite (Fe203) and galena suspended by bentonite. In some Gulf Coast wells, sodium silicate mixed with concentrated brine is used to drill through heaving shale formations. Such a fluid inhibits heaving remarkably, but it is expensive and costs as much as $10 per barrel. Barite has been used to weight this mixture. However, this mineral too rapidly increased an already excessive viscosity and it was thought that galena might be better for weighting such drilling fluid. The operator was anxious to try the latter, but none was available in the district.

ARTHUR BRICE deSAULLES In the death of, Major A. B. deSaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major deSaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armide Longer deSaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction- as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when be became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company.. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. deSaulles survives him. In 1876, Major deSaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. One of the operations of the J. L. Shiely Co. is quarrying in a hard granite gneiss with intrusions of gabbro or trap. During the winter of 1948-1949 the quarry ramp was lowered about 30 ft and during the 1949 season practically all drilling was done from the quarry floor, developing a face from 72 to 83 ft for the entire quarry area. The performance and cost table shows our record for 1948 and 1949.

The hydrometallurgical application of thiourea in processing precious metal ores and concentrates has reached the development stage. This paper reviews recent technical literature covering the process development of thiourea leaching. In addition, recent fundamental contributions are discussed. Most of the interest in thiourea leaching has involved treating high grade concentrates that have sufficient value to just the use of thiourea as a reagent. An important development in thiourea technology is the addition of SO2 to the leaching solution. This procedure effectively reduces the decomposition of thiourea and eliminates the problems of passive surface layers that limit the leaching efficiency. Results for the thiourea leaching of a bulk sulfide concentrate and a residue from the autoclave leaching of a smelter flue dust are also reported. As determined by a standard bottle roll cyanidation test, the bulk concentrate was extremely resistive to cyanide leaching yielding only 16% gold and 2% silver extraction in 24 hours. Leaching with a relatively concentrated thiourea solution (1MCS (NH2)2) resulted in 83% gold and 75% silver extraction in four hours. With the treated flue dust residue, gold extraction was about 60%. Gold and silver extraction with cyanide was sensitive to both cyanide concentration and oxidizing conditions. Cyanidation resulted in 59% gold extraction and 77% silver extraction in 24 hours.

Freezeproofing waste dump cars during winter months has long been of concern at Kennecott's Utah Copper Div. open pit property. Waste mining operations at Bingham Canyon use trains of seven 40-cu yd side-dump railroad cars with electric locomotives to service stripping shovels. Waste is transported an average of nearly 3 miles from the mine benches to dumping areas. During winter months, usually beginning in late October or early November, intermittent and continued periods of freezing together with varying amounts of snow cause waste material to freeze or stick to the sides and bottoms of the cars. Because of the physical layout of the pit, it is not feasible to freezeproof all waste trains at one or even a limited number of locations. A waste haulage line usually serves one or two mine benches, so that freezeproofing facilities must be maintained at many locations. For example, at the time of writing 27 salting stations were in use.

WHEREVER salt is extracted from the ground as an artificial brine produced by pumping down fresh water to dissolve the salt, subsidence of the overburden is a possibility, though apparently few cases of such subsidence have been noted and detailed records are wanting. This description is intended as a record of subsidence that may permit the forcasting of similar occurrences in other cases; the data were supplied largely by R. B. Lee, city engineer of Hutchinson, Kans. About eleven years ago, ground movement occurred at a neighboring salt plant, when the surface assumed the form of a shallow funnel. Movement was probably due to a flow of sand into a well through a poor seal or a broken casing. The salt deposit increases in thickness from the east until at Hutchinson, where the subsidence occurred, it is about 310 ft. think. The interbedded layers of shale vary in thickness from mere traces to about 7 ft. While knowledge of the shale content of the beds is not exact, the log of a shaft 3 miles east of Hutchinson indicates that shale forms about 25 per cent. of the total thickness. This shaft does not reach the bottom of the salt by about 60 ft., but there is no reason to think that the lower part of the bed is different from the upper. Logs of wells sunk to the bottom are not sufficiently detailed to be of much value. Above the salt is the shale of the well-known Red Beds. The thickness of this is variable, principally because of its eroded surface, but at the mine it is 340 ft. This shale is variable in character and strength, but contains no strong members of limestone or sandstone. If the support is removed, very probably it will subside. The Arkansas River flows across the salt district and Hutchinson is situated on the flood plain. Between the top soil, which is about 8 ft. thick, and the shale is 60 to 100 ft. of water-bearing sand and gravel.

Table 1 gives the composition of the specimens listed by the author. The details of test procedure and the results of the tests on mechanical, magnetic and electrical properties and cor-rodibility of the alloys are published in full in a paper by the same author, "Alloys of Iron and Manganese Containing Low Carbon," presented before the Iron and Steel Institute (of Great Britain) and published in full in their Proceedings for 1927, to which reference should be made. After reporting these tests the author gives the following discussion of results:] The studies here reported do not indicate that any of the series has really valuable or useful qualities for industrial applications, though the demands of industry are so varied that it is unsafe to prophesy that no special use will be found for a given material. The non-magnetic property of manganese steel is due to the association of Fe and Mn, but carbon has also an effect, enabling non-magnetic qualities to be obtained with a much lower percentage of Mn than would otherwise be the case; for example, 16 per cent. Mn is necessary for alloys practically free from carbon, while with 1 per cent. C nonmagnetic alloys may be obtained with as little as 7 per cent. Mn. Carbon, however, is the prime cause of the development of magnetic qualities by heat treatment. (Sec section 8 of the paper referred to above.) These Fe-Mn alloys show a resistance up to 87 microhms per c. c., but. as there are other alloys which have a resistance as high as 130 microhms per C. c., this does not provide any new feature of value. The most marked feature of the series studied is the brittleness in the range 3 to 10 per cent., with a maximum of brittleness at 7 per cent. Nickelic hydroxide is an important metallurgical reagent used for precipitating cobalt from nickel sulfate solutions. Existing methods of preparation of nickelic hydroxide involve electrolytic oxidation of Ni(OH)2 or the use of strong oxidizing agents such as chlorine, ozone and persulfate. Although the oxidizing properties of the SO2 + O2 system have been known for some time, e.g., detection of SO2 and oxidation on iron in acidic solution, the application of this system for the preparation of nickelic hydroxide as a process was not considered in the past. The present paper describes a new method for chemical preparation of nickelic hydroxide which has been developed in INCO laboratories. The technique consists of reacting nickelous hydroxide suspensions with a slurry of calcium sulfite in the presence of air or oxygen. The main advantage of the process is the cost of reagents and an absence of soluble by-products (e.g., C1-). The chemistry of this process is unusual since the redox potential obtained during the reaction exceeds that of the oxygen electrode. Therefore, the effect of CaS03 is not just a catalytic acceleration of the reaction NI(OH)~ + 02. The so3= must be involved in the stoichiometry of the overall reaction producing in the initla1 phase some strongly oxidizing intermediate species.

The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Coolie, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman Counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor Counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across southwestern Wichita County into Archer County. Developments during 1938 Important discoveries in the district were considerably more numerous and of more economic importance than for several years. In addition to a number of small, relatively unimportant discoveries and to the usual local extensions to the various producing fields in the several counties, at least eight fields, most of them apparently of considerable areal extent and importance, were found. The Helmerich and Payne, Incorporated and Blackwell Oil and Gas Company No. 1 Wilson. 4 miles southeast of the town of Holliday, in north central Archer County, encountered a pay of Strawn age at a depth of 3841 to 3858 ft., and was completed for an initial production of 1952 bbl. T'his well opened a new deep pool in the K. M. A. producing zone 8 miles southeast of the K. M. A. production. Subsequently an additional deeper horizon, also of lowcr Strawn age, was discovered by wells that failed to yield commerecial oil from the horizon of the discovery well.

Stripping of the Twin Buttes copper deposit started in 1965. Total material removed for the first 10 yr of operation is approximately 879 million tons. The sulfide concentrator has treated about 45 million tons. The Twin Buttes mineral zone was concealed under several hundred feet of recent alluvium. Beneath this post-minera1 cover, Paleozoic limestone, siltstone and quartzite, and Mesozoic metaarqillite, arkose, conglomerate, and volcanic rocks are intruded by an igneous complex of quartz monzonite and diorite. All rock units are erratically mineralized, principally with copper and molybdenum. Strongest copper mineral favors the Paleozoic calc-silicated limestone and siltstone, often preferential to individual beds.

Magnesium is the lightest metal used for structural purposes, for which reason perhaps more than usual interest is attached to measurements of its density. Although the density of solid magnesium has been det,ermined frequently, no measurements of the density of the liquid metal are available. Because of unusual experimental difficulties in measuring the density of the liquid, only a limited number of measurements of good precision were secured. The results, especially the value for the crystallization shrinkage, are of great interest in connection with the casting of the metal. A number of samples for these measurements were made available through the courtesy of the American Magnesium Corp. They were in the form of extruded bars 3/8 in- in diameter and several were of exceptional purity, as indicated by careful analyses. Table 1 gives the density values (at 20" C.) for magnesium of varying degrees of purity. The density was measured at room temperature by comparison of the weight in air, and when immersed in distilled water. The necessary buoyancy corrections were applied, so that the density could be expressed in absolute measure—grams per milliliter. The effect of the buoyancy of the immersed suspension and the surface-tension pull of the water upon the suspension were eliminated from the results by a preliminary weighing of the suspension immersed to the working depth. Great care was necessary to prevent the introduction of a significant error by the formation of gas bubbles upon the clean magnesium surfaces; these are sometimes very minute and easily escape observation. They may be detached by raising the specimen from the water and again immersing; this should be done just prior to completing the weighing. Their formation may be almost entirely prevented during a measurement by previously immersing the specimen in a solution of paraffin in petroleum ether. The thin film of paraffin remaining after the evaporation of the solvent prevents wetting of the magnesium surface by the water. In one such determination, the paraffin coating on a 22-gm. Specimen

This is an era of "expansion;" and, conformably with the change in commercial conditions, the function of the mining engineer, as well as that of his confréres in many other professions, has also expanded. From the position of an engineer, limited to the determination of technical questions, the engineer of to-day has come to assume an economic importance in those branches of industry dependent upon engineering skill for their development. He is indeed an engineer of limited usefulness who does not go further professionally than to submit a purely technical report on subjects presented for his consideration. While he has the same responsibility as formerly in the solution of the technical problems involved, he is further expected to supplement his report with advice on the financial and commercial aspects of these problems. For the great majority of problems presented to the engineer ultimately involve the determination of the pecuniary relations of the propositions under consideration. The great corporation lawyer no longer earns his fee by merely submitting his opinion as to the legal issues involved in law-suits affecting the corporation; he now assumes charge of the entire legal work, including both the organization of the corporation and the maintenance of its legal status thereafter. Widespread wildcatting for new supplies of natural gas and the beginning of importation from the southwest characterized the petroleum industry of West Virginia during 1944. Within the state, drilling for oil did not increase but. more gas wells were completed than in any previous year since 1937. Out of 40 wildcats drilled there were 25 gas discoveries and 15 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 40 wells. The proved limits of several oil pools were slightly extended by marginal drilling, resulting in 1300 acres of new oil territory, although no distinctly new pools were found. At least four new gas pools were assuredly discovered and various successful wildcats indicate future pools or wide extensions. The new proved gas territory, in definite new pools and definite extensions, is about 34,000 acres. A considerable net decline of proved oil has occarred and probably a slight decline of proved gas reserves. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 918 new wells were drilled, resulting in 71 oil wells with 613 bbl. of daily new production; 577 gas wells with 305,372,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 142 dry holes. Also, 107 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 22 bbl. and 12,327,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 8.6 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 529,241 CU. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 15.47 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 19.63 per cent. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the Oil Weekly as 3,069,000 bbl., as compared with 3,349,000 bbl. in 1943. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 200,000, 000,000 cu. ft., as compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 223,789,000,000 cu. ft.t in 1943.

LEAD-REFINING practice at the. Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill-has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. The average yearly analysis of bullion is given in Table 1.

The Pittsburgh bed, lying at the base of the Monongahela series, is probably the most famous bituminous coal bed in the world; famous not only for the product yielded in mining, but also as a key horizon in the search for oil and gas. It is the most important coal bed in northern West Virginia from the standpoint of extent, thickness and regularity. The general section is shown in Fig. 1. Roof Strata The strata that superimpose any coal bed vary more than the coal itself, and the Pittsburgh bed is an excellent example of 'this fact. Obviously, there were several changes during the period of deposition of this overlying material. Locally, sandstone occurs above and in contact with the coal. Sometimes a shale, or a clayey shale, rests on the bed and is often overlain by sandstone. Throughout the greater portion of northern West Virginia, however, the basal member of the immediate roof is a black or gray clay, which is usually slickensided. This material is called "draw-slate" by the miner. The color is due to the carbonaceous matter and the slickenside is the result of pressure, or movement, which may have come during or subsequent to its consolidation. This part of the roof requires especial consideration, because it is not self-supporting after the coal has been removed from beneath. The roof coal, 8 to 24 in. thick, is left directly below the draw-slate to support it and also to protect the clay from changes in temperature and moisture in the air, thereby preventing disintegration. The clay or draw-slate quickly changes its physical character when exposed, and falls if it is not adequately supported. Timbers alone are not effective in holding up this material, because it softens, crumbles and falls around the supports. Timbers hold up only the material that is directly over the posts and crossbars. THE failure to detect any change in the thermal properties of cobalt at the Curie point would appear to indicate that the apparatus may have a limited sensitivity. The Curie temperature has been determined by direct methods to be 1121+3°CP and 1131°C.3 The specific heat has been determined many times'.' and weighted values are given in Table I. The allotropic transformations in iron and titanium, used by the authors to test the experiment method, involved a volume change of the order of 3 pct on going from the close-packed to the body-centered-cubic lattice. These energy changes are likely to be much larger than those involved in a diffusionless transformation from a hexagonal to a cubic-close-packed lattice. However, it has been pointed out that thermal observations are unreliable in the detection of phase changes when these are near a Curie point.' James 0. McCaldin and Pol Duwez (authors' reply)—The sensitivity of the present technique is limited to first-order transformations, so that gradual changes in specific heat, e.g., in the vicinity of Curie points, are not detected. Furthermore, the existence of first-order transformations with latent heats much smaller than those occurring in the known allotropic transformations of iron and titanium is, we agree, still pending.

THE work performed by, the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permanent value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions."
