The activity coefficient of sulfur in Cr-Fe-S melts was determined by measuring the values of Ph3Rh,in equilibrium with such melts. The results showed that chromium has a pronounced negative effect on the activity coefficient of sulfur, which up to about 20 pct Cr may be represented by the equation: log f; = - 0.019 pct Cr It was also found that the influence of chromium was not altered by the presence of appreciable amounts of carbon or silicon. The influence of alloying elements on the activity of sulfur in molten iron has been the subject of many investigations; however the effect of one important alloying element, chromium, has not been reported, and the object of the present investigation was to determine its effect on the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid Fe-Cr-S alloys both in the absence and in the presence of carbon and/or silicon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The general method employed consisted of passing mixtures of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide over the sulfur-containing melt of interest and analyzing the outgoing gas to determine the equilibrium value of which resulted from the reaction shown in Eq. 111. H, (gas) + S (dissolved in melt) = H,S (gas) 111 The activity coefficient of sulfur, fs, was then calculated with Eq. [2] in which K, is the known equilibrium constant of Eq. [I] for dilute solutions of sulfur in iron. Raw materials used in the preparation of the charges included commercial grades of electrolytic iron and chromium and carbon-reduced, acid-treated silicon of 99.9 pct purity. Oxygen in the former presented no problem since it was removed by hydrogen in the normal course of an experiment. Carbon was added in the form of premelted iron-carbon and chromium-carbon master alloys. Sulfur was charged as iron sulfide prepared by first heating powdered iron and sulfur in air in an alumina dish until reaction occurred, and then deoxidizing by melting in a hydrogen atmosphere. Commercially bottled hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide were used after being passed through purification systems containing palladium, "Drierite," and magnesium perchlorate in the case of hydrogen, and "Drierite" alone in the case of hydrogen sulfide. Lamp-grade cylinder argon served as a flushing agent without further purification. Charges weighing from 300 to 500 g were placed in a high-purity alumina crucible of 0250-ml capacity and heated in an argon atmosphere in the induction-heated carbon-tube furnace illustrated in Fig. 1. During heating, a dry hydrogen atmosphere was substituted for argon in order that deoxidation of the charge and flushing out of argon would be accomplished sooner. After the charge melted, a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple contained in an alumina protection tube was immersed in the melt, and the desired melt temperature (usually 1600°C) was established. Higher temperatures up to 1760°C were required for some chromium-rich alloys because of their higher melting points, and in these cases a Pt 6 pct Rh-Pt 30 pct Rh thermocouple was used. Chemical analysis shows the partition of the magnesium addition between the metal and the graphite is independent of whether the graphite is in the form of nodules or flakes. The bright central spot observed in nodular graphite polished sections is shown to be due to the structure of the nodules. DURING the past few years numerous papers have been published on the production1-7 and heat treatment" of nodular cast irons. However, very little information is available on the structure of the nodules and the reason for their formation. It would appear that an explanation of the phenomenon of nodulation must await a detailed knowledge of the nature of the nodule. Disagreement exists among various workers on such a fundamental point as to whether or not a nodule actually contains a microscopically visible, nongraphitic nucleus.9-11 Work was initiated with a view to obtaining definite information on this and other aspects of the problem. Chemical Separation and Analysis Microscopic appearance had indicated9-11 that a nongraphitic core might exist in nodules (Fig. 1). It appeared that a chemical comparison of separated nodules and flake graphite would be profitable, for if the core is nongraphitic a relatively large amount of certain elements would be found in the nodules as compared to the flake. This comparison could best be made by obtaining nodules and flake from the same melt of cast iron, part of which had been in-noculated with a suitable addition reagent for the formation of nodules. A 300 lb melt was produced. About half of this was innoculated in the ladle with an Fe-Si-Mg alloy to produce nodules and cast into keel blocks; the remaining half of the melt had silicon added in an effort to compensate for the silicon in the innoculant used in the other half of the melt and this was cast into similar keel blocks. The analyses of the resultant irons are given in Table I. Nodules and flake were chemically extracted from 2 kg samples of metal as described in the appendix. While this method dissolved the iron and chromium carbides, it did not dissolve the titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum carbides. These latter carbides could have been removed by nitric acid, but in other experiments it was found that it attacked pools of metallic iron entrapped in the nodules which had, until the nitric acid treatment, been protected from the attack of the sulphuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids. It will be shown in the next section that entrapped iron exists in nodules but not in flake. On microscopic examination many tiny irregular particles were observed to accompany both the nodules and the flake. These were identified by tabling a sample of nodules from which a sufficient fraction was obtained for X-ray analysis. A good pattern of titanium carbide was obtained indicating that this was the predominant compound present. Since it was not possible to determine how completely the carbides could be removed mechanically and since their removal from flake is much more difficult, it was decided not to resort to any separation as this would render further comparisons more difficult. PART of a program of research on the Ti-A1 system1 involved a study of the lattice parameters of the titanium-rich a solid solution, which has a hexagonal close-packed structure. For this work, a 14 cm Debye-Scherrer powder camera and filtered CuK, radiation was used. For each pattern, the parameters were calculated by a least squares solution of the five strongest high angle lines. This provides an accuracy of i0.005A or better. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. It will be seen that an unusual change of slope occurs in the curve for the C parameter at high aluminum contents. Such anomalous changes in slope have been recorded by RaynorV or several magnesium-rich solid solutions. The effects were interpreted in terms of a special contribution to the lattice distortion due to factors of electronic origin predicted by Jones." Jones' theory, in substance, suggested that an unusually large expansion of the lattice would begin when the electron per atom concentration in the alloy was increased to a value at which an overlap just began from one Brillouin zone to another. SUMMARY Laboratory high pressure column tests have shown that the presence of 1-20 ppm of aluminum ion effectively prevents permeability loss during uranium leaching with leachates containing sodium carbonate. If added after permeability loss has occurred, aluminum ion can restore the permeability to nearly its original value. No deleterious effect was observed on uranium leaching performance and the technique should be quite compatible with all field operations. INTRODUCTION The recovery of uranium values from underground deposits by in situ leaching or solution mining has become economically viable and competitive with conventional open pit or underground mining/milling systems (Merrit, 1971). In situ leaching processes are particularly suitable for small, low-grade deposits located in deep formations and dispersed in many thin layers. Many such ore bodies occur along a broad band of the Gulf Coastal Plain (Eargle et. al., 1971). The advantages of the in situ leaching processes have been reviewed (Anderson and Ritchi, 1968). In the in situ leaching process, a lixiviant containing the leaching chemicals is injected into the subterranean deposit and solubilizes uranium as it traverses the ore body. The pregnant lixiviant or leachate is produced from the production well and is then treated to recover the uranium. The resulting barren solution is made up with the leaching chemical to form lixiviant for re-injection. Upon completion of the leaching operation, the formation is contaminated with leaching chemicals and other species made soluble in the leaching operation and has to be treated to reduce the concentration of these contaminants in the ground water to levels acceptable to the regulatory agencies (Witlington and Taylor, 1978). Restoration is accomplished by injecting a restoration fluid, which could be the fresh water or water containing chemicals, into the formation. As it traverses the leached formation, the restoration fluid picks up the contaminants and is then produced at the production well. This produced water is either disposed or purified for recycle. In both phases of operation, formation permeability or well injectivity is one of the most important parameters which determines the viability of the in situ leaching process. Low formation permeability limits production rates, leading to uneconomical operations. The formation is said to be sensitive if there is a sharp loss of permeability on contact with water and other fluids. Many uranium bearing formations, for example, the Catahoula formation of the Texas Coastal Plain, contain significant amounts of clay minerals which are water sensitive. Serious permeability losses can occur when the pH and chemical composition of the lixiviant is significantly different from that of the formation water. Jones has investigated the influence of chemical composition of water on clay blocking of permeability (Jones, 1964) and Mungan studied permeability reduction through changes in pH and salinity of the water (Mungan, 1965). Various mechanisms of permeability damage have been proposed and reviewed (Jones, 1964; Mungan, 1965; Gray and Rex, 1966; and Veley, 1969). When large amounts of swelling clays are present, a significant fraction of the flow channels in the formation can be reduced due to swelling. However, in most cases, swelling need not be the main cause of permeability losses. Particle dispersion and migration or clay sliming can be more important causes for formation damage. Clay particles entrained in the moving fluids are carried downstream until they lodge in pore constrictions. As a result, microscopic filter cakes are formed by these obstructions, plugging the pores, effectively restricting fluid flow and reducing the formation permeability. Moore found that as little as 1-4 percent clays present in a fine grained sandstone could completely plug the formation if they are contacted by incompatible injected fluids (Moore, 1960). It has been found that injection of NaHC03/Na2CO3 lixiviant into formations with significant clay content often leads to loss of formation permeability and well injectivity. To alleviate this problem a change of the lixiviant composition to KHC03/K2CO3 has been proposed. At present, however, many in situ leaching operations employ NH4HC03/(NH4)2C03 mixtures as a source of carbonates. This approach has been successfully used in South Texas by Mobil, Intercontinental Energy, Wyoming Minerals and U.S. Steel, etc. The use of ammonium carbonates solutions, however, contaminates the formation and requires a time-consuming restoration operation. The other approach to reduce the permeability loss is to pretreat the sensitive formation with chemicals which prevent clay dispersion and migration. Such chemicals include hydroxy-aluminum (Reed, 1972 and Coppel et. al., 1973), hydrolyzable zirconium salts (Peters and Stout, 1977), hydrolyzable metal ions in general (Veley, 1969) and polyelectrolyte polymers (Anonymous). Still another approach, is to minimize the "shock" caused by sudden injection by gradually changing the chemical composition of the injected fluids from that of the formation water. THE APPROACH Since permeability loss can be an important factor limiting the efficiency and economic viability of the in situ leaching process, a study was initiated on

REORGANIZING AMERICAN ENGINEERS There are in America approximately 500 engineers' organizations of various kinds, and yet it is estimated in many communities that 30 to 50. per cent. of the resident engineers are not members of any society of engineers. There is no enumeration of the engineers of the country, but estimates range from 100,000 to 300,000, the latter number probably including assistants, such as instrumentmen, draftsmen and inspectors, together with professional engineers. These local, state, regional and national organizations are for the most part independent and have no means for cooperation. Steps toward the improvement of these conditions are being taken in a number of localities and have already been taken in others. Many engineers are giving the matter serious attention. American Society of Civil-Engineers took an important action at the June meeting of its Board of Direction, by, authorizing the creation of a Committee on Development of Am. Soc. C. E. This action is now well known to all representatives on Engineering Council. Other Founder Societies axe reported to be considering similar action. Engineering Foundation, at its meeting on Sept. 12, adopted the following resolutions: Survey of Engineering Organizations BE IT RESOLVED: that the Engineering. Foundation is prepared, the four Founder Societies concurring, to devote its strength and its' income, so far as this may he required, to a study of existing engineering organizations, and from information thus developed to formulate a series of constructive recommendations which may he serviceable in guiding the further development of local and national engineering organizations in their relations to the profession of engineering, to the public and to each other, to the end that a foundation may he laid upon which to establish a broadly planned procedure, which, while recognizing and preserving all that has already been accomplished, shall increase the power of American engineers in upbuilding their profession and in the service they render to society; and RESOLVED: that in accepting the responsibility for such an undertaking, it will be the purpose of the Engineering Foundation to organize the proposed research along the broadest possible lines, to call to its aid highly qualified experts, and to avail itself of the help of agencies which may be willing to cooperate; and RESOLVED: that in proposing this research the Engineering Foundation has no desire or purpose to intrude upon the domain of individual organizations; that it does not propose to control the action of any individual or organization; nor to ask the acceptance of its conclusions; but that its purpose shall he to develop a possible procedure, or a series of such procedures, of such evident, merit that they will appeal to those who are likely to be most interested; it will do this in the belief that in so far as its work may justify the confidence of engineers and of engineering organizations, it will bear its own fruitage.

THE plastering properties of six representative California drilling muds were studied over a temperature range of 70° to 175° F. at several mud weights, using a high-pressure circulating filter press with full size consolidated cores. In all tests, with untreated as well as with chemically treated muds, the filtration rates at elevated temperature were higher than at low temperatures and in nearly every case this increased filtration rate was notably larger than could be attributed alone to the decreased viscosity of water-the flowing medium-at elevated temperatures. It is concluded that no existing method will permit even an approxi-mate determination of the filtration rate at high temperature from data at room temperature. It is necessary to measure filtration at the tem-perature actually anticipated in the well, or to make a sufficient number of tests at various lower temperatures so that a small extrapolation of these data to the anticipated well temperature may be applied. Such tests should be carried out on the mud as actually used in the well. The viscosity of each of the muds was determined over the same temperature range. While no relationship was observed between mud viscosity and plastering properties, it was found that chemical treatment of the muds for viscosity reduction shifted the temperature of minimum viscosity to appreciably higher values than for untreated muds.

The composition of the coexisting phases in the methane-ethane-n-pentane system was determined at 100°F. This was accomplished by withdrawing samples of the coexisting phases under isobaric-isothermal conditions. The relative amount of each of the components present in the liquid and gas phases was determined by conventional analytical fractionation methods. The phase behavior of this system approximates that estimated from generalized correlations which take into account the influence of the nature and amount of each of the components present upon the equilibrium. It was found that for particular pressures and temperatures the equilibrium constant of each of the components was influenced significantly by the composition of the system and this effect was more pronounced at the lower pressures for methane than for the components of greater molecular weight. However, at the higher pressures approaching the maximum two-phase pressure for the system at this temperature the composition markedly influences the equilibrium constants of all the components at a particular pressure and temperature. The results of this study are presented in graphical and tabular form. Introduction The phase behavior of many of the binary systems containing parafin hydrocarbon components from methane through n-pentane has been investigated during recent years. In addition the compositions of the coexisting phases in mixtures of crude oil and natural gas have been studied.' However, these results do not establish the influence of the nature and amount of the other substances making up a multi-component system upon the gas-liquid equilibrium constant of any one component. A preliminary correlation on the basis of values for binary systems was made2 utilizing such experimental information as was available. However, there is need for much additional information regarding behavior in systems containing more than two components. Study of the phase behavior of ternary systems offers a feasible attack upon the determination of the influence of composition as well as of pressure and temperature upon the several equilibrium constants concerned. An investigation of the phase behavior of the methane-propane-n-pentane system at 100°, 160°, and 220°F was reported.".' This work served to illustrate the marked influence of concentration of the other components upon the equilibrium constants. Variations of as much as 50 pct in the equilibrium constants for methane for fixed temperature and pressure were observed in regions remote from the critical state. Likewise there was a marked variation in the equilibrium constants of propane and n-pentane as a result of changes in the composition. These results indicated the desirability of investigating additional ternary systems. The present paper deals with a study of the methane-ethane-n- pen-tane system at 100°F, which is similar in many respects to the work upon the meth-ane-propane-n-pentane system cited above.

PRODUCTION of nickel in Cuba, a new source of this metal, has been started by the Nicaro Nickel Co., subsidiary of the Freeport Sulphur Co. Construction of the Nicaro plant in Oriente Province, Cuba, and of a refinery at Wilmington, Del., has been "substantially completed," according to Langbourne M. Williams, Jr., president. The initial rate of output is less than capacity operation, which will be reached when "the customary problems incident to the commencement of full- scale production are eliminated." The plant in Cuba for the treatment of the extensive nickeliferous ores of that region, and the refinery, were built by Nicaro for the account of the Defense Plant Corp. construction has been under way for eighteen months. DEFORMATION of cold-rolled fcc metals and alloys produces one or the other of two types of rolling textures, usually referred to as the copper type or the brass type. The pure fcc metals, with the exception of silver, develop the copper-type texture when rolled at room temperature. Silver, brass, and many other alloys develop the brass-type texture. Transition from one texture type to another can also occur. Solute additions to pure copper cause a transition from the copper-type to the brass-type texture.' Varying the deformation temperature also produces texture transitions. Copper rolled at -196°C developed the brass-type texture2 and silver rolled at elevated temperatures, 200°C, developed the copper-type texture.374 The work of Haessner,' Smallman and Green,6 and Hu and coworkers3'4 seems to have established an apparent correlation between the type of rolling texture (and the texture transition) and the stacking-fault probability. Thus materials with low stacking-fault energies are thought to develop the brass-type texture while high stacking-fault energy materials develop the copper-type texture. Mikkola and cohen7 measured by X-ray diffraction techniques the stacking-fault probability, a, in the ordered and disordered fcc alloy Cu3Au. Unexpectedly, ordered specimens showed about twice the stacking-fault probability as the disordered ones. Marcinkowski and Zwe118 also found stacking faults in ordered Cu,Au, but not in the disordered CusAu. More recently, Camanzi and coworkers9 have shown that the intrinsic stacking-fault energy of Cu3Au undergoes a considerable decrease (approximately 100 ergs per sq cm) when passing from the disordered to the ordered phase. In general, deformation reduces order'' but some of our measurements showed that some long-range order still remains in Cu3Au after cold reduction by rolling 80 pct. From the above considerations Cu3Au offers the possibility of studying the texture transition in fcc alloys without varying either the temperature or the composition. If the stacking-fault energy correlation is correct, an initially ordered alloy should develop the brass-type texture during rolling while a disordered alloy should develop the copper-type texture. The present communication describes some initial results of experiments designed to investigate this possibility. The rolling textures of ordered and disordered Cu3Au samples were determined after various amounts of deformation. The ordered sample had an initial long-range-order parameter of S = 1, determined from X-ray diffraction. The grain size of both the ordered and disordered samples was the same, and the initial textures of both were also identical and approximately random. No obvious differences in the deformation textures of the ordered and disordered materials were detected up to 35 pct reduction and the (111) pole figures of Fig. 1 resemble that of pure copper. However, with reduction larger than 35 pct and less than 50 pct, a marked deviation from the copper texture was noted in the ordered material. FATE, rather than planning, put Bob Morris into coal mining. He was a farmer's son, born at Plattsburg, Ohio, just 68 years ago (Feb. 28, 1878) though he could easily pass for ten years younger. Before he was ready for high school the family moved to Columbus, seat of Ohio State University, whose course in mining engineering attracted him because lie thought it the broadest of the engineering courses. He really wanted to be a steel metallurgist but it was a coal-mining company that offered him a job when he graduated, and this circumstance directed his entire future professional life. To. be sure it wasn't such a glorious opportunity so far as pay went -$40 a month-but his employer, the Modoc Coal & Mining Co., Modoc, Ohio, was developing a new shaft mine, thus offering some good experience. In 1902, after a year's experience, he was made superintendent of the property. Then in 1903 the Continental Coal Co. at Glouster, Ohio, offered him a better job as their chief engineer, which he retained until 1905, at the same time joining the A.I.M.E.

Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—During the past year, drilling activities have been limited to repair work. No new developments of importance can be recorded in production technique. Fall of dome pressure is maintained at the 1 lb. per sq. in. per annum rate mentioned in previous reports. Acid treatment of wells is being increasingly used and for wells in fissured areas has been very successful. Such wells have been converted into first-grade producers with substantial drops in bottom-hole differential pressures. The effect of acid treatment has been to increase the flowing lives of wells so treated. The normal procedure consists of threo treatments of 500 gal. commercial acid diluted 100 per cent but success has been met with fewer applications. The policy of returning products to the resorvoir has been continued. The total quantity of products returned since the policy was commenced in 1929 now amounts to approximately 30 million barrels. Haft Kel Field.—The drilling of the main Haft Kel structure for production purposes has now been completed. Production and control wells have been completed to meet the rate of production anticipated over the next few years.

Reed, Jr. The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, "Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate," July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing "super"-concentrates prepared from magnetite or "blue dust" into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloys to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential. ?

A special committee on the Classification of Surface Mining Methods was appointed by the A.I.M.E. Board of Directors on Nov. 17, 1939. The committee was headed by Gerald Sherman, and the members were Chester A. Fulton, C. F. Jackson, Earl E. Hunner and Arthur Notman. The following form of classification was reported to the Board by the Committee on May 16, 1940, as its unanimous recommendation. A special committee on the Classification of Surface Mining Methods was appointed by the A.I.M.E. Board of Directors on Nov. 17, 1939. The committee was headed by Gerald Sherman, and the members were Chester A. Fulton, C. F. Jackson, Earl E. Hunner and Arthur Notman. The following form of classification was reported to the Board by the Committee on May 16, 1940, as its unanimous recommendation. Bank Mining is distinguished from Pit Mining by its situation. In Pit Mining the ore is taken from an operation below the level of the surrounding surface. In the secondary classification, Bottom Benching is an operation in which a bench is attacked from below, but the material mined might be hauled up out of the pit or moved out horizontally or downward.

TWENTY-FIVE years ago no distinction was made between water wells and oil wells except in the nature of the fluid produced. Water wells usually showed no decline in their rate of production; when oil wells showed decline something in the manner of handling them was considered wrong. Both water and oil were believed to be subject to the same physical laws in their underground movement toward the wells. Today a sharp distinction is made between them. Whereas water exists alone in the porous formations at depth, oil is usually accompanied by gas. This mixture does not behave as a liquid alone. It is a frothy, seething mass of foam which approaches and enters the wells. Different physical laws come into play. Twenty-five years ago attention was directed entirely to the well itself; today the well is accepted as a mere hole in the ground, a hole to be equipped properly for efficient service, yet without any value whatever unless it is backed up by a sufficiently prolific reservoir. Then, we were concerned with wells alone, 3000 ft. in depth; now commercial wells and their reservoirs are 10.000 ft. deep. Petroleum engineering concepts have necessarily therefore undergone a change in this last quarter century. What are they today?

(written discussion ?).-There are few mine officials who will not say that there is, great need of vocational schools in mining communities, but the absence of success of so many of these ventures makes them wary about establishing such schools. They have neither the time nor the facilities to study the systems and to analyze the factors that have made certain schools a success and others a failure. In the first place, it is difficult to secure the proper instructors. Educators cannot make the appeal to the workmen, because of their lack of experience, and experienced men who are capable of the appeal are not usually educators, knowing nothing about the presentation of the subject. Then, too, there is ordinarily no objective in a mine school. The workman is not reached by a school that makes him merely a more valuable man to his employer, unless he can participate in the gain. An objective, as promotion or financial gain, would appeal to the man and would make for regular attendance. Usually vocational schools are run like all others-a number of subjects at a time, continued from one day to another. This is impractical for the workman, whose mind cannot work like the mind of a school boy. The school boy is spending most of his time in school work, while the man is doing it as a side issue, and he cannot be expected to pick up tonight&apos;s lesson where last night&apos;s left off. The workman is accustomed to the idea of completing a job and doing one thing at a time; his mind is trained that way, and for this reason a school that works on the principal that each lesson is a complete job, with no reference to the previous or following lesson, will go a long way toward removing one of the things that has caused many failures. The usual vocational schools .in mining communities are either very elementary, or are run by the engineering staff and, consequently, are too advanced. There is no plan between. It is believed that there is a possibility of a halfway type, but this is a subject that is large enough for a paper by itself and is entirely, too broad to be presented as a discussion.

Anders Richard Akerman entered the eternal rest on Feb. 23, 1922, after a long and distinguished career. All mining men in Sweden arc mourning him, because he was one of their greatest and a leader in the scientific metallurgy of the iron. He was born April 18, 1837, in Stockholm, where his father, Joachim Akerman, was a professor at the Technical University, but the greater part of his childhood was spent in Falun, where the family moved after his father was made principal of the mining academy. He was at first taught by a tutor, but in 1851 entered the high school in Vesteras and the University of Uppsala in 1855, from which he graduated as a mining engineer on Dec. 11, 1860. A week later, he entered the service of the Department of Commerce and entered the mining academy at Falun, from which he graduated Dec. 15, 1862. The following May, he was accepted as a student in the metallurgical section of "Jernkontoret" (the "Iron Institute") and on Oct. 22, 1864, he was made an assistant in the same section. Thus begun the cooperation with the Iron Institute which was to continue for so many years and to bear such rich fruit. He had, however, previously received two requests from the Iron Institute: One to assist Prof. V. Eggertz in the preliminary work of preparing a handbook on blast-furnace practice, the other to make a complete index of the proceedings of the Iron Institute ("Jernkontorets Annaler") volumes 1817-1864, which index was published in 1866. On Oct. 19, 1865, Akerman was requested by "Jernkontoret" to give during 1866, lectures in the metallurgy of iron at the mining academy of Falun, as Prof. V. Eggertz wished to devote his entire time to the study of assaying. This request was renewed Oct. 15, 1867, for the year 1868, and on April 17, 1869, he was made instructor in metallurgy and mining at the Technical University, to which institution the higher education in mining engineering was transferred at that time. Akerman thus entered his career as a teacher, which lasted until the end of 1891. On May 11, 1877, he was appointed assistant professor in metallurgy and mining; on Sept. 7, 1883, he was appointed acting professor in the same department; and two weeks later was appointed dean of the mining college. On May 21, 1874, he was instructed by the Crown to inspect the mining schools in Filipstad and Falun. As a teacher, Akerman was very popular and his lectures were excellent, in form as well
