An exploratory study wap made to examine the possibilities of a visual approach in investigations into microscopic mechanisms of fluid behavior in porous media. Appropriate apparatus and techniques were developed so that microscopic phenomena could be recorded on color movie film as well as be observed visually. The observation flow cells in which tlie fluid behavior studies were made were essentially single-layered matrices of spheres between plates. sometimes all-glass, sometimes all-Lucite and sometimes a combination of the two. The fluids were limited to water and a filtered crude oil. Two flow regimes were observed during the flow of the immiscible liquids: channel flow and slug flow. In the former, transport was effected through stable networks of interconnecting channels; and in the latter, part of the movement took place in the form of slugs. Under certain conditions, flood-front patterns were found to be different depending upon which liquids were the displacing and displaced phases and not depending upon whether the matrix was water-wet glass or oil-wet Lucite. Residual formations of oil and water were observed and are described. Some of the ramifications and significance of the ohservetl phenomena are discussed. INTRODUCTION In recent years considerations of microscopic mechanisms of fluid flow in porous media have taken on greater significance. Much needs to be learned before the fundamentals of petroleum technology are completely established. For example, many unanswered questions exist in connection with relative permeability, displacement phenomena, residua! fluid formations. flow structure, etc.; and further analytical mathematical formulations are seriously indicated. It is hoped that systematic investigations into the microscopic mechanisms connected with the behavior of fluids in porous media will shed some light on some of the problems extant. Until recently microscopic mechanisms have been considered almost exclusively as speculative hypotheses. Within the past few years, however, the problem has been submitted to a limited number of experimental investigations. Nuss and Whiting' made some studies on the pore-space geometry of sandstones and limestones by impregnating cores with an inert plastic and leaching the solid matrices to leave behind plastic models of the pore spaces. SchaeferZ traced pore spaces microscopically through lengths of limestone cores by cutting away thin sections from the exposed faces normal to the line of view. In 1949 two projects were organized in which dynamic flow phenomena were examined microscopically to uncover microscopic mechanisms. One was set up at the Pennsylvania State College where Lowmanb bserved heterogeneous fluid flow phenomena in capillaries. The second was the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 47B at the University of Oklahoma where microscopic studies of dynamic fluid phenomena in synthetic porous matrices have been made by visual observation and cinephotomicrography.' It is with the latter that this paper is concerned. treating the techniques involved and the observations made. TECHNIQUES Observation Flow Cells The observation flow cells formed a focal point in the techniques employed. Laboratory model flow tests have been made to simulate field conditions of partial pressure rnaintenance by dispersed gas drive on rocks having sandstone-type porosity. In this production method there is a significant saturation gradient between injection and production wells. A means of calculating relative permeability characteristics. from partial pressure rnaintenance flow tests has been developed. This method takes into account the saturation gradient. These kg/ko characteristics are identical to those for solution and external gas drives. This method of calculation, which has been proved experimentally, has limitations; however, it is valid for cases likely to be encountered in field prediction of partial pressure maintenance performance. The production performance of a hypothetical reservoir has been calculated for several different injection programs, involving both full and partial pressure maintenance. Results indicate that the maxinum oil recovery by these gas injection programs is obtained by full pressure mainte- nance at the original bubble point. Correspondingly lower oil recoveries are obtained by postponing gas injection and/or by reducing the degree of pressure maintenance. INTRODUCTION Dispersed gas injection is an important method of recovering additional oil beyond that obtainable by pressure depletion alone. The injected gas acts as a source of additional energy to displace oil from the rock formation as well as to retard oil shrinkage in the reservoir. In practice, gas injection is usually started after the reservoir pressure has fallen below the original bubble point. For various reasons sufficient gas is generally not injected to completely maintain the pressure in the reservoir. So, injecting gas at a declining reservoir pressure results in a combined external and solution gas drive. These two oil displacement processes are characterized by different gross saturation distributions in the reservoir. The external gas drive, like all frontal drive processes, inherently results in an oil saturation which increases from the injection wells to the producing wells. In the solution gas drive there is essentially a uniform oil saturation throughout the reservoir, provided the field is being depleted uniformly. It has been customary to predict oil recovery performance under partial pressure maintenance by a method which does not take into account the saturation gradient1. It has been shown2 that neglecting the presence of a saturation gradient can cause considerable error. It is the purpose of this paper to develop and present an improved method of predicting partial pressure maintenance performance of reservoirs including, where necessary. the effects of well arrangement. From the laboratory standpoint, this problem involves the measurement of the basic flow behavior (relative permeability characteristics) under partial pressure maintenance conditions. Recent research- as shown that for rocks having sandstone-type porosity, the relative permeability characteristics are identical for solution gas drive and complete pressure maintenance external gas drives. In a recent article,l which described the softening effect of columbium in plain high-chromium steels, the authors stated that their investigations had shown columbium to be also a particularly valuable inhibitor of intergranular corrosion in steels of the 18 per cent chromium, 8 per cent nickel type. It is the purpose of the present paper to record some of the results obtained through the introduction of columbium to the austenitic chromium-nickel steels. The damaging effects of this type of corrosion have become so widely known as to restrict considerably the applications of the steels under consideration, and therefore there is little question of the importance of the goal to be attained. Numerous contributions concerning the susceptibility of the austenitic chromium-nickel steels to intergranular corrosion have appeared during the past few years, and among others who have dealt constructively with the subject are such well-known authors as Strauss and Houdremont of Germany, Hatfield of England, and Bain in the United States. Different theories have been propounded as to the cause of intergranular corrosion, and various remedial measures have been proposed, the majority of which involve the use of addition agents. Titanium is the addition agent at present most generally employed, as suggested by Houdremont and modified as described by Bain, Aborn and Rutherford. Little has been published on the effects of holding these steels for long periods at the relatively lower temperatures in the presence of corroding media, and the effects have mot been fully realized by producer and consumer.

THE Coal Division undertook its most ambitious program this year at the New York meeting, with six full' sessions and a luncheon on Monday which had a record attendance and at which the newly elected officers for the Division were announced. Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., Omaha, Neb., was unanimously selected as Chairman; J. B. Morrow, preparation manager of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., as Vice-Chairman; and H. E. Nold, Ohio State University, Secretary. During the past year two new and interesting activities were conducted by the Division directed at stimulating the interest of junior and student members. Reports were presented at the luncheon meeting by the chairmen of these commit¬tees. J. B. Morrow. chairman of the paper prize awards, and H. N. Eavenson reported on the work of the mining machinery manufacturers fellowship, the work on which was completed the first of the year. Several excellent papers are expected from these two groups for the next meeting of the Division to be held in Pittsburgh some time in the fall. The regular six-session program was filled from start to finish with interesting papers and much discussion, but unfortunately not enough time for the latter. The papers covered the field of prospecting, mining methods, preparation, utilization, mechanization, and safety, and all through the program we were constantly reminded of the value and need of research in the coal industry.

The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 pm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry.

Occurrences and associations of natural tellurides are constrained by the relative fugacities of Te, in specific mineralizing environments. Some are rare (e.g., FeTe2) and others absent (e.g. MoTe , ZnTe) m nature because high f-Te2/f-S2 ratios are rare or unattainable , whereas others (e. g . , Ag2Te,HgTe) require lower ratios and are common. Complex and seemingly chaotic sulfide-telluride associations are, in fact, highly systematic and depend both on temperature and fugacity ratios. Some older sulfides act as buffers via reactions such as PbS + Te2 = PbTe + S2, thereby affecting the deposition and paragenesis of younger tellurides and the combined or uncombined mode of occurrence of precious metals. Thermochemical calculations of telluride-sulfide-oxide equilibria can have pragmatic value. The thermochemical approach tells us little about the Te "source", but is beginning to unravel the systematics of telluride mineralogy and controls at the precipitational end of the line.

INSTITUTE members attending the Annual Meeting in New York who want to see one of the mining engineers' newest aids, photoelastic stress analysis, are due for an interesting afternoon on Thursday, Feb. 15, when open house: will be held at the Columbia University mining laboratory. Information as to the direction and distribution off stresses in mine structures, which has been developed by Professor Bucky, associate professor at the Columbia School of Mines, and David Sinclair, research assistant, is useful in the design of pillars and in the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways and haulage levels.: This work has been sponsored during the last ten years by the Engineering Foundation.. The Smelting and Refining Department of Cerro de Pasco Corporation is located at La Oroya at an altitude of 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) in the Peruvian Andes. Producing lead, zinc and copper as well as twelve by-product metals and chemicals, the smelter is among the world's most complex. With the intake of high-bismuth ores in 1934, electrolytic lead refining by a modified Betts process was piloted and the plant went into commercial production in 1937 at a nominal capacity of 100 M.T. per day. After expansions in 1950 and 1963, nominal capacity has increased to 250 M.T. per day. Anodes spaced at 10.8 cm centre to centre and starting sheets are both set into the cells by overhead cranes. The asphalt-lined concrete cells are arranged in a Walker side-by-side configuration, and the electrolyte, circulating at 13 l/min./cell, is a solution of locally-produced hydrofluosilicic acid and lead fluosilicate. The corrosion cycle is limited to four days due to high impurity content of the bullion, which has successfully been treated at contents of up to 9% impurities. The cathodes are melted, drossed, and cast into blocks and pigs assaying 99.997 + % lead. The anodes with the blanket of slime adhering, are washed with electrolyte and condensate makeup water to remove the concentrated lead fluosilicate entrapped in the slimes. The slimes are then removed with high-pressure water sprays, centrifuged and sent to another plant for recovery of silver, gold, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, and antimony.

GRAIN boundary migration in V-shaped thin specimens of high purity silver was studied. Each specimen contained two crystals having the relative orientation: (111)A/(111)B; (ll0)A/(101)B. The boundary between these two crystals varied between a continuous curved and an alternating two plane interface. The plane interfaces were oriented parallel to (101)A/(011B) and (121)A/(211)B. Traces of these planes are shown in Fig. 1. Evidently the two plane interface, although of higher area, comprises lower total interface energy than the average curved boundary it replaced. The plane boundaries were found to move at 650 °C to consume the broad segment of the V opposite to the direction of interface area and energy decrease. On investigation, using the thermal etching technique of Hendrickson and Machlin,1 it was found that the outer grain contained 8.3x108 more dislocations per cm" than the grain at the apex of the V. Consequently, the boundary moved to decrease the strain energy associated with the difference in dislocation density across the boundary. The rates of motion of specific {110} and {112} boundaries were measured during interrupted anneals at 650°C by referring the position of the boundaries to each other and a fiducial line on the specimen surface. The measured rates of motion are 0.075 and 0.025 mm per hr for the {110} and {112} boundaries, respectively. Plots of grain boundary motion vs time of annealing show straight lines with little deviation of data points from these lines.

The in situ high frequency electrical conductivity and permittivity of Colorado oil shale were recently measured. The measurements were made at 45 MHz (45 million cps) by transmitting from one borehole to two receiving boreholes, all boreholes in line. A differential measurement using the received signals was used to calculate the conductivity and permittivity.

DEURING the past year the uranium milling industry has seen the installation and initial operation of solvent extraction circuits in the Climax Uranium Co. mill at Grand Junction, Colo.; the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries mill at Shiprock, N. M.; and the AEC pilot plant at Grand Junction, operated by National Lead Co. Inc. The Vitro Uranium Co. mill in Salt Lake City is converting to solvent extraction, and the new Union Carbide Nuclear Co. mill to be constructed at Rifle, Colo., will also employ this method. Solvent extraction circuits will be incorporated in two mills now under construction -the Texas Zinc Minerals Co. mill at Mexican Hat, Utah, and the Gunnison Mining Co. mill at Gunnison, Colo. In Canada the expansion of the Eldorado mill at Port Radium includes installation of a solvent extraction circuit. Solvent Extraction Process: In simplest terms, the organic solvent is mixed with leach liquor and then the organic and aqueous phases are allowed to separate. By this contact the solvent selectively extracts uranium from the liquor, leaving a raffinate, or barren leach liquor, which may be discarded. The pregnant solvent is stripped of its uranium by con- tact with a stripping solution, such as aqueous sodium carbonate, which has a greater affinity for uranium than the solvent does. The barren solvent from the stripping step is available for further leach liquor extraction, and the pregnant stripping solution, which usually contains 30 to 60 g U3O8 per liter, is ready for precipitation of a final product, or uranium concentrate.
