In recent years an increasing amount of research work has been done on refractory materials for use in copper-smelting furnaces. A few of the larger refractories manufacturers have erected special research laboratories which are fully equipped to study the refractory problems of the smelter. A typical laboratory of this type was described in the January, 1929, issue of Mining and Metallurgy, in an article entitled "Methods of Research Newly Applied to Refractories," by W. F. Boericke. This particular laboratory is equipped for the manufacture of full-size refractory brick. It aims to study on a fairly large scale the behavior of various refractory raw materials and the effect of improved methods of manufacture. The refractories manufacturer has at his disposal the naturally occurring refractory oxides in various degrees of purity, mixed or combined with other oxides. In order to supply the copper smelter with a refractory brick that will permit the most economical operation of the smelting furnaces, it is necessary to have the optimum combination of a number of both physical and chemical properties in the brick. Unfortunately, nature has not provided any raw materials in which the perfect combination of these properties exists. It is, therefore, a problem for man's ingenuity to seek out the most desirable raw materials and develop methods of manufacture that give, in the resultant product, the necessary combination of properties in as full a measure as is possible. In the laboratory it is possible to carry out fairly broad experiments with this objective. It is first necessary to obtain and process the raw materials, then to manufacture them into brick and finally, to test these bricks under conditions designed to interpret or simulate in the laboratory the actual conditions in the smelting furnace. It is necessary for the research engineers to determine certain fundamental properties in the brick which may be subjected to laboratory measurements and to interpret these measurements in terms of brick performance in smelting-plant practice. Such procedure is not what might be called an exact, scientific one but it has been found that great progress can be made when these principles are applied. Ore broken at the mine or quarry face generally is loaded by power shovels into large trucks or rail cars and hauled to a primary crushing plant where it is reduced to a more workable size for ease in handling. The primary crushing plant is customarily located as close as possible to the center of gravity of the ore body and the projected limits of the mine pit to minimize the cost of hauling and to increase safety from flying rock as a result of blasting operations. A belt conveyor is used to transport the crushed product to a nearby ore treatment plant or, should this plant be located some distance away, the ore is loaded directly into cars and hauled by rail. Between trips the crusher product is accumulated in bins or stock piles. In all open pit mining and quarrying operations, the power shovel, the transportation equipment, and the primary crushing plant should work as a team, complementing each other. When establishing the design and selecting the equipment for these closely integrated operations, capital and operating costs for each unit operation must be weighed to achieve an optimum balance. Rising labor costs have given impetus to the universal trend toward greater efficiency, higher speed and larger equipment, and higher degrees of automatic control. The result is that power shovels have increased in size, haulage trucks are larger and faster, and only coarse crushers with feed openings adequate to receive run-of-mine lumps of ore with a minimum of secondary blasting are selected for new installations. These coarse crushers also have large through-put capacities, even when adjusted to produce a 6- to 10-in. size of product, thus making it possible to use a single stage of coarse crushing at the average mine. The use of a single crusher results in a compact crushing plant layout consisting of a dumping pocket for receiving loads of run-of-mine ore, a coarse crusher followed by a surge chamber for the crushed product, and a feeder to withdraw the ore at a uniform rate to deposit it on a belt conveyor. THE ceramic industry has to do with forming or molding articles of clay, and imparting to them their characteristic properties of permanence, strength and color by subjecting them to heat treatment in kilns. This heat treatment is commonly known as "firing" or "burning." The art of firing clay ware antedates the industrial use of coal; hence wood was the fuel first used, and the earliest kilns were built to burn wood. The majority of the clay ware produced today is fired in periodic kilns that are essentially enlarged structures similar to the earliest enclosed kilns; a kiln consists of a large chamber 16 to 32 ft. dia. (or rectangular) in which the ware is charged and fired either in direct contact with flame or hot gases from the fuel, or in saggers which shield the ware from direct contact with the gases. The fuel is burned in a number of small furnaces built in the thick .wall that encloses the chamber; these furnaces are from 16 to 36 in. wide and from 3 to 5 ft. long; some of them have horizontal or sloping grates, but many have no, grates; the last are called "dead-bottom" furnaces. The temperature necessary to mature the charge in the kiln varies for different clays; for some it is as low as 1800°, and for others as high as 2700° F. Wood was an ideal fuel for the low temperatures that were used in early kilns; it burns freely and produces along, clean flame, which promotes uniform distribution of the heat in the kiln; it does not coke and so restrict the passage of air through the fuel bed; the ash does not melt in the fuel bed to form clinker; and the ash that is carried into the chamber and deposited on the charge does not contain iron and sulfur to discolor the clay. The extent of the ceramic industry now precludes the general use of wood in kilns, so that today this industry is one of the large users -of bituminous coal, burning more than eight million tons annually in kilns. Manufacturing plants usually are at or near the source of clay, with deposits of coal suitable for kilns occurring near the clay. The cost of coal is the largest single item of expense in the manufacture of clay ware, and, because all coals are not equally suitable for the process, the careful selection of coal is important. The two principal attributes of a thickener pulp are its settling rate and the ultimate pulp density of the thickened mud. Testing for evaluation of thickening attributes of a pulp has usually been done batch-wise by placing the pulp in a one-liter glass graduated cylinder and noting the position of the boundary between clear liquor and mud as a function of time. Refinements in testing have included repulping a thickened mud to various dilutions and evaluating the settling rate on these various repulped muds. This is considered to make possible an estimate of the settling rate as a function of pulp density and therefore to pinpoint the slowest settling pulp which ought to be critical from the standpoint of thickener plant design. Finally, tests are sometimes made with model-size continuous thickeners of arbitrary size. In batch tests it is generally accepted that the behavior of a pulp is described by a curve such as the one shown in Fig. 1, in which the position of the boundary between clear liquor and mud (the mudline) is plotted against time. It has also been assumed that the initial settling rate (the slope of the line segment AB) is descriptive of the pulp and independent of the size and shape of the container. Where the settling rate is slower and clearly a function of time (portion CD of the settling curve), it has been assumed that the data are not of much use because of the intrusion of compacting phenomena. The next important datum is the height. PE, which is a measure of the so-called ultimate pulp density. This quantity is assumed to be characteristic of the pulp and independent of the container. When actual data are recorded, results are rarely exactly according to this theory and numerous deviations may be noted. For example, some pulps seem to require an appreciable delay before beginning to settle, as in line AF. This is spoken of as representing the need for an induction time for flocculation. It has seemed desirable to explore thickener data with a more sensitive charting tool than is afforded by the coordinates of Fig. 1. Instead of relating the position of the mudline to time, it has seemed desirable to relate the rate of descent of the mudline to time. This, in effect, amounts to charting the slope of the line in Fig. 1, or the derivative of its ordinates, against the same abscissas. Fig. 2 shows the new chart for the curve ABCDE of Fig. 1. When this new tool was applied to data obtained, for example, with sized clay pulps, astonishing differences appeared. Apparently the traditional tool conceals differences instead of revealing them, whereas the new method emphasizes them. It seems, also, that both charting methods have their uses. In this article attention is focused on the effects of pulp density and container height as they affect the settling behavior of flocculated suspensions of a sized kaolin. The thesis by M. C. Fuerstenau' gives more details than this summary, as well as some information about the effect of other variables. Sized fractions of kaolin were used, supplied through the courtesy of S. C. Lyons of the Georgia Kaolin Co. Large batches were made by agitation in a flotation machine and in a glass jar equipped with a mixer. The settling vessels were 2, 4, and 6-in. diam glass cylinders of various heights. Pulp Dilution: The effects of pulp dilution on sedimentation behavior are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Fig. 3 shows data on pulps ranging from 2.44 to 16.7 pct solids initial pulp density, flocculated with Separan and charted in the traditional manner. Silver-lead-zinc replacement deposits occur in limestones of the anticlinal Caja range at Providencia, near Avalos, Zacatecas, Mexico. The description deals with intrusives, outcrops, preferred horizons, changes from bedding to fracture, control in depth, and variations in abundance and ratios of minerals throughout a vertical range of 500 m. THE purpose of this paper is to record a few field observations and accumulated office data concerning outcrops, relation of ore occurrences to intrusive and host rock, and mineral zoning. Reasons for some of the phenomena are not clear to the author so the facts are given with the hope that other investigators may be able to furnish the explanations. The Avalos unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., operates the Alicante, Bonanza, Providencia, Albarradon, San Eligio, Nazareno, Leona, Salaverna, and Santiago mines situated between Avalos railroad station and Concepcion del Oro on the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico. Some of these mines are within Penoles property while others are on mining claims leased from the Compania Nazareno y Catasillas, S. A., Mazapil Copper Co., and the American Smelting and Refining Co. The main office and camp are at Providencia, about 170 km southwest of Monterrey, N. L., so the silver-lead-zinc mines of the district are usually referred to as the Providencia mines. The Aranzazu, Catarroyo, and Cabrestante copper-gold mines are situated a few kilometers to the southeast on the same mountain range near Con- cepcion del Oro, the name by which the camp is known. It is operated by the Mazapil Copper Co. The main theme in the following pages is a description of the silver-lead-zinc ore occurrences of the district. Rock Formations Sedimentary Rocks: Many competent geologists have contributed generously to an ample fund of information concerning the sedimentary columns of northern Mexico. Among them are Carlos Burck-hardt, E. Bose, L. B. Kellum, and R. W. Imlay. Carlos Burckhardt, who covered a number of extensive areas in many parts of the Mexican Republic, devoted years to mapping the geology of the Caja, Zuloaga, and Santa Rosa mountain ranges around Mazapil, Concepcion del Oro, and San Pedro de Ocampo, Zacatecas. Particle size distributions of the solids fraction in typical coal preparation plant black water have been evaluated. The carbonaceous and mineral fractions were found to have distinctly different size distributions: the mineral matter being significantly finer than the carbonaceous material in all cases. Based on analyses of 13 samples obtained from the Appalachian, mid-continent and western regions of the US, it was found that, on the average, 83% of the mineral particles but only 41 % of the coal particles were finer than 44 pm (325 mesh). Typically, the size distributions of the mineral matter fraction tend to be bimodal, probably due to the presence of relatively coarse quartz, calcite, pyrite, etc., together with much finer clay particles.

Selecting efficient machinery for an underground mining operation is a highly skilled art that still depends largely on human judgment and experience. In a coal mine, for example, there is no better way to predict the results of operating with a cutting machine or a continuous miner than to go underground with a sharp-pointed miner's pick. The trained eye can detect the depth of point penetration, cleavage planes, roof and floor strata, and many other conditions impossible to determine in a laboratory. Even so, however, an entirely new set of conditions may lie unexposed just a few feet behind the solid face. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from a solid. Consequently, the selection of mineral extraction machinery and systems must be based on results obtained elsewhere under apparently similar conditions. A recent study of the problem of equipment and system analysis was conducted in the coal mining regions of West Virginia. This state was chosen for study because it afforded representative sampling. The 172 coal mines investigated ecompassed seam heights ranging from less than 30 in. to over 84 in. and covered virtually all known coal mining conditions except two. The exceptions are the extreme pitch of coal seams in the western United States and British Columbia and the "bumps" encountered in the Rocky Mountains. Both of these extreme conditions are worthy of individual study.

In a recent paper on the intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift operations as opposed to continuous injection, Morgan Walker presented a comparative table showing the effect on oil and gas production from the same wells under the two methods of operation.' This table carried a column showing the formational gas-oil ratios under each method, computed by deducting the volume of input gas from the volume of trap gas. During the entire spring and summer of 1928, the present writer had been engaged on some extensive test car tests of rich gas in Glenpool, seeking, primarily, for an explanation of the apparent loss of gasoline during the summer season between the field meters and the plant master meter. Tests at several of the field meters where the richest gas was obtained regularly failed to check with other tests on the same gas made farther along the line, and the difference was not made up by the quantity of drip gasoline collected between the points. In the course of these tests, the final outcome of which is immaterial to the present purpose, an attempt was made to construct a curve representing the relationship between gasoline content of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet and the shrinkage in the volume of gas treated as a result of removing the condensible fractions. Such a curve was made, expressed in units of gallons per thousand cubic feet on the abcissa and the ratio vapor volume to liquid volume on the ordinate. This curve is a rectangular hyperbola and shows that 3 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of raw gas as a vapor occupied much less space, per gallon, than did 1 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of another sample of gas. This is, in general, corroborated by converting to the same units the residue settlement curves prepared by the Tidal Oil Co. and by the Natural Gasoline Manufacturers Assn., though the three curves, when plotted together, occupy entirely different positions on the paper, as shown in Fig. 1. The bearing of all this on Mr. Walker's discussion of gas-lift is this: if the formational gas is to be computed by deducting the input gas from the trap gas, some correction must be made for the vapor volume

Thirty-six elements have been alloyed singly with cartridge brass. Ammonia and mercury stress-cracking tests have been conducted on the as-rolled and recrystallized strip. Ultra high purity cartridge brass has also been tested. Silicon improves stress- cracking behavior. High silicon (I per cent) cartridge brass quenched from high temperature (for example, 800 C.) annealing is exceptionally resistant to ammonia stress cracking. This improvement is not lost by subsequent cold working, but is greatly reduced by subsequent low temperature annealing. Phosphorus, arsenic, barium, cerium, magnesium, tellurium, tin, beryllium, and manganese benefit stress-corrosion resistance under some circumstances, but not others. The other alloying additions tried had no large effect on stress-cracking resistance. None of the elements added accelerated stress cracking. The impurities in commercial brass are not responsible for season cracking.

The Fifth Class, that of the OXIDES, is subdivided into three sections, according to the positive element present. The oxides of the non-metal silicon are placed by themselves, but it will be noted that the compounds of the related element titanium are included with those of the metals proper. This last is made necessary by the fact that in one of its forms TiOz is isomorphous with MnOp and PbOz. A series of oxygen compounds which are properly to be viewed as salts, e.g., the species of the Spinel Group and a few others, are for convenience also included in this class.

THE Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. Major reserves of phosphorite were found in the Georgina Basin of northern Australia in the period 1966-1968. Geological investigations by various companies and the Bureau of Mineral Resources of Australia show that these phosphorite deposits are associated with siltstones, cherts, siliceous shales, and limestones of the Beetle Creek formation or its equivalents, all of lower Middle Cambrian age. The discoveries resulted from systematic Australia-wide exploration programs by several companies utilizing, in concept, the relation of basin stratigraphy, lithologic associations, tectonics, and phosphate occurrences to paleogeography in respect to its paleolatitude and areas of supposed oceanic upwelling. In terms of field techniques, the first discovery at Duchess, North Queensland, resulted from the recognition of a phosphorite interval at depth in a stratigraphic oil well followed by prospecting of the nearest outcrop of the equivalent aged rock succession. In Northern Territory, the Wonarah-Alexandria deposits, which do not crop out, were discovered by analysis and interpretation of gamma radiation logs followed by drilling.

THE production record of the Sinclair-Moren pool, in southeast Young County, Texas, demonstrates that under efficient operating methods a single well may obtain normal oil recovery from an area of 100 acres or more. This record is the more surprising in view of relatively adverse reservoir conditions such as lack of water drive, moderate initial reservoir pressures and a consolidated sandstone reservoir with original permeability greatly reduced by processes of lithification. This case history is considered worthy of special study in view of the ever present problem of proper spacing of wells. Cupidity, abetted by the unrestrained law of capture, has in too many instances guided development and production methods without regard for sound economic and engineering principles. Largely as a result of ill advised spacing of wells, many oil fields have brought financial losses instead of deserved profit to those using capital, time and energy in this important business of adequately meeting the petroleum requirements of what is known as our modern civilization. In March 1923, the Sinclair Oil and Gas Co. obtained initial daily production of about 12,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 1100 bbl. of oil in its first well near the center of a 372-acre lease on the L. P. Moren land, James Rose survey, Abstract 245. This exploratory test was drilled as a geological prospect of average promise, on a plunging anticline with possibly 10 ft. of closure as mapped on the outcropping limestone of upper Canyon (Pennsylvanian) age. In subsurface, the top of the producing res-ervoir is 16 ft. lower in this well than in the highest wells but probably 25 ft. above lowest closing contour. Wells No. 2 and 3 were drilled about 1/4 mile west and southwest near a normal fault with some 30 ft. of downthrow to the southwest. The producing sand was reached at a depth of 2512 ft. and drilled to 2529 ft. in the first well. This sandstone reservoir is of Millsap Lake (middle Strawn, upper Cherokee) age. It was absent in the second and third wells, which were abandoned at the depths of 3725 or more. In April 1925, a fourth well was drilled 600 ft. east and 24 ft. lower for top of sand than No. I. Production of about 100 bbl. daily was reported from 2521 to 2562 after an 80-quart shot. This well was drilled to 4560 ft., plugged back to 2575 and shot again; but was abandoned soon thereafter because of small production.

Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

During the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of " lime-roasting " of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,'and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art.

Introductoy.—In view of the fact that an opportunity is to be offered to the members of the Institute present to inspect the recent developments of gold-deposits in the immediate vicinity of Washington it has seemed appropriate that some preliminary description of them should be given which may facilitate that inspection. It would have been a matter of much satisfaction to me to be able to present some general description of the gold-deposits of the Appalachian system ; but I have as yet had no opportunity of personally examining any others than those of Montgomery county, and these are still in their infancy. This paper examines the difficulties of applying the finite element (FE) method of analysis to quantitative design of cable bolt systems. Cable bolt systems are in general use for ground control in VCR (Vertical Crater Retreat) topes throughout the world. However, despite their widespread use and importance, design of cable bolt systems is highly subjective. Two difficulties with the FE approach are examined: (i) the use of standard elements with a high aspect ratio (slender elements) to represent bolts, and (ii) the influence of cable bolts on hanging wall stability of a VCR study stope. Analysis results indicate that the use of slender elements for bolts is practical in large scale finite element analyses of VCR stopes. There are significant advantages in this approach to the engineering design of cable bolt systems in underground mining.

INTRODUCTION Chevron's Uranium Mill is located near Panna Maria, Texas; 70 miles southeast of San Antonio. Designed by Kaiser Engineering, the Mill will process a nominal 2500 dry T.P.D. of uranium bearing ore containing 15% uncombined moisture. Earl Torgerson, San Mateo, California, is the consulting metallurgist on process design. Feed to the plant consists of a mixture of high, medium and low grade sandy day ore; the average grade of the ore will be 0.7% throughout the life of the project. The ore is delivered to the mill via truck and stored by type in individual piles on a flat storage area. The ore is fed by conveyor to a semi-autogenous grinding mill. The SAG mill discharge slurry is pumped either to a storage tank or to the first of five mechanically agitated leach tanks where both H2SO and NaC103 are added. Following leaching, the slurry is mixed with thickener No. 2 overflow before being pumped to a six-thickener, countercurrent decantation circuit where the solution containing uranium is separated from the leach residue. The residue is washed essentially free of solubilized U308 values at the sixth thickener and discharged to an adjacent tailings pond. The first thickener overflow, containing approximately 0.4 grams U308 per liter, is filtered for clarification and sent to the liquid ion exchange (solvent extraction) section. The pregnant aqueous solution is mixed with organic solvent containing amine on which the complex uranyl sulfate ions are absorbed. The immiscible aqueous and organic solutions are mixed and separated in each of the four stages of solvent extraction. The final pregnant organic is directed to a stripping section. A strip solution containing (NH4)2S04 (ammonium sulfate) and NH4C1 (ammonium chloride) is contacted and separated from the organic in each of the four mixer-settler units. The strip solution is mixed with NH3 and the uranium precipitates along with trace amounts of sulfate, chloride, and ammonia. After washing in a thickener, the uranium precipitate or yellowcake is centrifuged and dried in a multiple hearth roaster. Overflow from the yellowcake thickener is recycled back to the stripping section of the solvent extraction circuit. The dried yellowcake concentrate contains more than 98% U308; diluents include H20, ammonia, chloride, etc.. Impurity concentratons in the product are sufficiently low, after drying, to permit direct shipment to refinement installations. ORE RECEIVING Ore from one or more mines will be stored on a pad adjacent to the uranium processing mill. Ore stored in the area may total 200,000 tons or more, which is equivalent to over a two month treatment reserve for the mill. In addition to providing surge capacity, the proposed storage facility permits natural oxidation of the ore and affords an area which, in turn, improve plant U308 recovery and reduces consumption of oxidizing reagents. The uranium bearing ore is segregated at the storage area into several distinct types. One group can be identified by its sandy, clay-like matrix and will be distinguished by its U308 concentration of high, medium, or low. Other ores contain substantial quantities of carbonaceous shale, typical of ore in the area. Feed is recovered from any one or combination of piles, in accordance with operating requirements and recovery factors. The run-of-mine ore, at 15% moisture, is transferred to a stationary, 24-inch by 24-inch grizzly. Undersize material falls into a 280-ton surge hopper located below grade, while oversize material is removed for preliminary size reduction. A sump-pump is located at the reclaim hopper to recover excess mositure and ore spillage for processing. Plant feed is continuously drawn from beneath the hopper at an average rate of 120 tons per hour by means of an apron feeder. The hopper is equipped with a low level safety system to protect the apron feeder assemble. The ore is transferred to a belt conveyor, elevated and discharged into a semi-autogeneous grinding (SAG) mill. Water addition at the discharge point is automatically controlled by a feed rate, moisture analyzer system located on the belt conveyor. GRINDING Minus 24-inch ore, at a rate of 120 mosit tons per hour and cyclone underflow at a rate of 137 moist tons per hour are combined with a controlled 186 gallons per minute fresh, warm plant process water. The mixture, at an average 68% solids, is fed to the SAG mill. The viscous mass is subjected to grinding at a temperature moderately above ambient resulting from use of the 140ºF well water. The 16.5'x5.0' Marcy Mill is driven by a 500 H.P. A.C. Motor. The mill will rotate at 73.4% of critical speed or 14.06 R.P.M. Eight percent of the mill's volume will be occupied by steel grinding balls; 22% by pulp. The mill is designed to rotate in either direction, in order to obtain maximum lifter and liner life. The SAG mill is equipped with a trommel having ½ -inch slots for removal of oversize material at its discharge and the large or oversize material is collected and either recirculated periodically or discarded. The undersize slurry is diluted to 64% solids with the addition of hot well water or mine water to the mill discharge sump. The flow is automatically controlled utilizing data from a gamma density meter. The slurry from the mill discharge sump is pumped to hydrocyclones to classify the particles. ONCE a millionaire's plaything, the Santo Domingo mine, in Peru, is now, because of its metallurgical problem, an engineer's nightmare. It is deep in the montaña jungles of the Amazon basin, 140 mi. northeast of Tirapata, which is a rail- way station between Puno and Cuzco, and about 250 mi. east of Mollendo on the Pacific. The discovery was 111ade by Marian(-) Quispe, an Indian, who, while searching for quinine bark, was attracted by a slab of gold quartz 1x1 the rock wall of a narrow canyon. He broke off a piece, weighing 47 Spanish ounces and, that time, worth approximately $900.
